Dorothy (Howell) Sparks

Dorothy H. Sparks, 96, of Crawfordsville, IN joined her family in Heaven on Thursday, July 20, 2017 while a resident of Bickford Cottage in Crawfordsville. A native of Mitchell County, she was a daughter of the late John and Minnie Buchanan Howell and the wife of Gaw J. Sparks who died in 2002.  She was also preceded in death by three infant brothers and six sisters.

Dorothy married Gaw Sparks on January 12, 1946 and they started their married life in the Pleasant Grove Community of Yancey County, before moving to Johnson City, TN where they lived for 44 years.  After her husband’s passing, she moved to Waynetown, IN and finally moved to Crawfordsville in 2016.

Surviving are her two sons and daughters-in-law Allen and Dianne Sparks of Crawfordsville,   and Gary and Melody Sparks of Johnson City, TN; two sisters: Jean (Charles) Usery of Lowell, NC and Jo (Max Dean) Garland of Valdese; a sister-in-law: Thula Sparks of Micaville and a brother-in-law: Elden Beaver of Rock Hill, SC; 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at 6 PM Sunday, July 23, 2017 at Liberty Chapel Church, Crawfordsville, IN.  Pastors Allen Sparks and Derrick Tamm officiated.

A graveside service will be held at 12 noon, Tuesday, July 25, in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, on Brush Creek.  Her sons Allen Sparks and Gary Sparks will officiate.

Shoemaker Funeral Home in Waynetown and Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home in Burnsville are assisting the Sparks family.
