Jean M Gresens of Burnsville, on March 27, 2017, joined her husband Ralph, who passed away July 22, 2016 after 61 years of marriage. Born August 7, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois, she was preceded in death by her parents, George and Anne Beaumont. Having grown up in Mundlien, Illinois and graduating from Libertyville-Freemont Consolidated High School in 1952, she and Ralph lived approximately 30 year in US Virgin Islands prior to moving to Burnsville approximately 25 years ago.
Jean enjoyed being involved with the Yancey County Literacy Council (formerly Blue Ridge Reading Team) where she served as a tutor and past Vice President of Board of Directors. While in the Virgin Islands, she was Deputy Administrator, St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands Office of the Governor, Alexander A. Farrelly. Some of her duties included: Ombudsman, receiving complaints and resolving issues with appropriate Government Departments; corresponded with various Federal agencies and legislature, etc. for Governor; supervised renovation of Government House with $2 million budget; served as Governor’s personal secretary, transcribing minutes of department head meetings; arranged for training and supervised housekeeping staff; coordinated the Governor’s receptions with hiring caterers, musicians, etc. and attending all functions; and assisted the Governor’s wife with her literacy project “Once Upon A Time”. Other career opportunities were working with US Virgin Islands Office of Collective Bargaining; Executive Secretary to General Manager of Virgin Islands Public Television System and served in numerous positions at Caneel Bay Plantation, St. John, Virgin Islands.
Surviving are a sister-in-law, Valerie Corbel and family of California.
