Ruby Jean Hewitt, 87, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord Friday, July 14, 2017 at Care Partners Solace Center in Asheville. She passed peacefully, with her loving husband and daughter by her side. She was a member of Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church.
Ruby was born on February 6, 1930 in St. Louis, Missouri, to parents Ruby and Bernard Michael. She was married to husband Victor D. Hewitt for 65 years. She and Vic raised their family in Florida, then moved to Burnsville about 25 years ago.
She loved her family, her God, and all her many adopted dogs. She was an active volunteer all her life. She was a Girl Scout leader and a school nurse. She worked hard at the Aloma United Methodist Church rummage sales. She received a ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award from the State of Florida for her work at a Shands Hospital in Orlando, Florida. She also volunteered with the Yancey County Humane Society, working at the annual flea market sale for 8 years.
She also loved fishing, gardening, and antiques. She was a talented artist, having her own studio.
Ruby is survived by her husband, Victor D. Hewitt; daughter Victoria L. Carlie; son Steven M. Hewitt; and three grandchildren.
A Viewing and Family Visitation will be held from 7 until 8 pm Saturday, July 22nd, at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.
A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, July 23rd, at the Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church.
