Wayne McKinney, 88, of the Green Mountain Community, North Bee Branch Road, departed this life for his eternal home on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at Smoky Ridge Health & Rehabilitation after a period of declining health. Born on September 15, 1929 he was the oldest of nine children, seven sons and two daughters born to the late Rama and Stella Mae McCourry McKinney. He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by a granddaughter: Jenna Elaine Hughes; three brothers: James, Wesley, and the Rev. Jack McKinney. Wayne was a former employee of International Minerals Corporation and a customer service representative of Bilo and Sav-Mor for over thirty years. He was a person who loved talking with and getting to know people. Wayne enjoyed family and working a good team of mules.
Surviving are his loving and faithful wife of 60 years: Phyllis Byrd McKinney; two daughters: Jean Garland and husband, Charlie of Arcadia, Florida and Carol Hughes and husband, Randy of Green Mountain; son: Alan McKinney and wife, Nikki of Burnsville; three granddaughters: Cathryn Hughes Barnett and husband, Andre` of Bald Creek, Carrie Hughes of Green Mountain and Anna McKinney of Burnsville and Greenville, NC who loved and cherished him deeply; two sisters: Helen Murphy of Green Mountain and Mary Dale of Burnsville; three brothers: Eugene McKinney of Green Mountain, Rev. Royce McKinney of Peach Bottom, Pa and Sam McKinney of Meadowview, VA; a special brother-in-law: James C. Byrd and wife Judy of Burnsville, whom he considered a brother as well; In addition to his family he leaves behind a host of friends.
A celebration of life service will be held 12 noon, Saturday, January 6, 2018 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Blaine Whitson will officiate. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery at Horton Hill.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
