TAMMY ANN HENSLEY

Tammy Ann Hensley, 43, of Green Mountain, passed away Sunday, December 4, 2016 at Park Ridge Hospital. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Deborah Chandler Hensley.  Tammy was of the Baptist faith and attended Fox Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of 23 years, Morris Hensley.  A brother; Adam Hensley of Detroit, MI; her maternal grandmother: Nellie Chandler of Burnsville; aunts: Christine Ponder, Betty Canipe and Wanda Slater and uncles: David and Dennis Chandler.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be made to Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, to assist the family with funeral expenses.

ED RIDDLE

Ed Riddle, 61, of Hendersonville, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, December 4, 2016, at Park Ridge Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Ben L. and Ruth Edwards Riddle.  He was a US Army Veteran, and a retired employee of GE Lighting.

 

Surviving are his wife:  Michele Riddle; his children:  Jeremy Riddle and wife, Victoria, of Charlotte and  Jennifer Israel and husband, Tim, of Douglasville, GA; 3 grandsons:  Henry, Thomas and Lincoln Riddle; a brother:  Ben Riddle and wife, Charlene, of Asheville; and, a friend as close as a brother:  Dennis Ray and wife, Becky, of Fletcher.

 

The family will have a private memorial service.

EMMA LOU HOLCOMBE

Emma Lou Holcombe, 93, of Burnsville, went home to heaven Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at Care Partners Solace Center in Asheville.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Alvin and Nellie Jane Holcombe. She was also preceded in death by a sister: Ruby Pike and brothers: Alfred Holcombe and infants Adler and Jennings.  Emma Lou was a member of Paint Gap Presbyterian Church and retired from Glen Raven Mills after 40 years of service.

Surviving are four sisters: M. Kathleen Bryson of Candler, Eva Holcombe of Asheville, Juanita Tipton and husband Walter of Burnsville, and Libby McHattie and husband Don of Casper, WY; brothers: Grant Holcombe and wife Lois and Edd Holcombe and wife Doris all of Burnsville and Ted Holcombe and wife Barbara of Shallotte and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Pastor Ted Richardson will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 9:30 AM Saturday in Cane River Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

GENEVA FENDER AYERS

Geneva Fender Ayers, 82, of Mills River, made her journey home Monday, November 28, 2016 at her home.A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Nettie Melton Fender and the wife of Roy Edward Ayers. "Judy and Eddie" were married for 46 years, until his death in 1999.  Geneva’s greatest joy was caring for her family. She loved the Lord and she was a prayer warrior.

Surviving are a son:  Roy Randall Ayers, of the home; 2 daughters:  Kimberly Nelon and husband Terry, of Asheville; Melanie Light and husband Glenn, of Ridgeway, VA.; 2 grandsons:  Corey Slate Light and Cameron Edward Light, of Ridgeway VA.; sisters:  Ruby Williams, of Newland, Conita Stacey, of New Castle, Del.; and a brother:  Boyce Fender of Hockessin, Del.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, December 3, 2016 in the Asheville Family Church, of which she was a member, 530 New Leicester Hwy.  Revs.  Rolf Woodard and Keith Russell will officiate.  Burial will be in the Robinson Cemetery on Bakers Creek in Burnsville.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

RUBY DEYTON

Ruby Deyton, 94 of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, November 26, 2016 at Smoky Ridge Health and Rehabilitation.A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Carrie Hensley Edwards and the wife of Earl F. Deyton, who died in 1986.  She was also preceded in death by sisters: Ruth Riddle and Ethel Pate and a brother: Phillip Edwards.  Ruby worked many years in retail sales, including as a buyer with Belk’s.  She grew up with strong family and religious beliefs.  In early years she was a member of Bee Log Baptist Church, later a Charter Member of Faith Fellowship Mission and most recently, attended West Burnsville Baptist Church. 

Surviving are her son: Ronnie Deyton and wife Linda of Green Mountain; three sisters: Delma Williams of Spartanburg, SC; Mae Randolph of Marion and Lillian Spencer and husband Wayne of Cape Coral, FL; a brother: Albert Edwards of Erwin, TN; several nieces and nephews, and a special friend; Eva Jo Garland of Bursnville.    

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Ricky Ray and Billy Mitchell will officiate.  Burial will be in the Watts Cemetery on Lottie’s Creek.  Nephews will be pallbearers.  The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 1:30 PM Tuesday, prior to the service at the funeral home.

LAWRENCE DUANE SMITH

Lawrence Duane Smith, 78, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord Friday, November 25, 2016, at Smoky Ridge Health and Rehabilitation. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Erastus “Rass” and Bertha McCurry Smith.  He was also preceded in death by brothers:  Buford Neal, Billy Smith, Elwood Smith and Dee Smith. Duane was a retired employee of Avondale Mills and had attended Faith Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years: Opal Bradford Smith; a daughter: Denna Reese of Mars Hill; a sister: Jeannette Roland of Burnsville; and 4 nieces and 3 nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2PM Saturday, December 17, 2016, at Faith Baptist Church, located on Highway NC 197 North. Pastor Dwight Boone, Jr. will officiate.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.

PHILLIP EUGENE CALLOWAY

Philip Eugene Calloway 56, of Fairview, passed away Sunday, November 20, 2016.A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Lawrence and Lois Hylemon Calloway.  He was a proud member of the U. S. Marine Corp. Philip was a hardworking man who built his own landscaping service and was highly respected in the community.

Surviving are a sister:  Patricia Mallard of Arden; a brother:  Paul Calloway and wife Charlene of Mills River, and soul mate Grace Eschavzier of Fairview.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Military Rites will be conducted by Sgt. E. L. Randolph Chapter 57, DAV. Burial will be in the Calloway Family Cemetery at Fairview.

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

VANESSA JANE HONEYCUTT

Vanessa Jane Honeycutt, 54, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, November 19, 2016 at her home. A native of Laurens County, SC, she was a daughter of the late James E. ‘Babe’ and Molly Randolph Gregory.

Surviving are a son: Joshuaa Honeycutt of Burnsville; her twin sister: Valorie Jean Ward and husband Doug of Clinton, SC; two brothers: Ed Gregory of Chappells, SC and Jim Gregory and wife Donna of Laurens, SC; 3 grandchildren: Kendal Joe and Skyler Rae Honeycutt and Terry Biddix; a special aunt: Geneveve Johns of Burnsville and special friends: Debbie Allen Hensley, Tracy Norton, Nell Tipton and Youlanda Q.

A memorial service will be held at 2PM Saturday, December 10, at the Little Creek Church of God.  In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to Hospice of Yancey County, 856 Georges Fork Road, Burnsville, NC 28714.

RUBY ALTHEA MCMAHAN

Ruby Althea McMahan, 88, of the Concord Community, went home Wednesday, November 16, 2016, at her home, surrounded by her children.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Talmage and Allie Hensley McMahan.  She was also preceded in death by 6 sisters:  Pearl Harris, Kathleen Boone, Clara McPeters, Johnsie Rathburn, Agnes Patton and Zula McPeters;   2 brothers:  Wade McMahan and Jack McMachan and a great-grandson Andy Bagwell.  Ruby was a very creative and artistic person who loved her family.

Surviving are 5 daughters: Rita Robbins, of Newton, Peggy Burnette, and husband Leon, Kay Hensley, and fiancé, Matt, Lynn Hensley and Claudette McCurry, and husband, Paul all of Burnsville; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Nieces and Nephews also survive, and a special puppy Midget.

A private graveside service will be held in the McMahan Cemetery on Bee Branch.

The family will receive friends 6 until 7PM Friday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.

JANE 'JANIE' WILCOX WHITSON

Jane “Janie” Wilcox Whitson, 85, of Unicoi, TN passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at Unicoi County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit.A native of Mitchell County, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Handy and Fairine Forbes Wilcox.  She was also preceded in death by a grandson: Joshua Whitson; a brother: Bruce Wilcox and sisters: Hattie McCourry and Bonnie Bowman.  Janie was a homemaker and a member of Unicoi Freewill Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of sixty years, Brooks Whitson; two sons: Brooks Handy Whitson and wife Lesa of Knoxville and Jeffrey John Whitson and wife Maggie of Lenoir City, TN; a daughter: Carol Anders and husband Ricky of Erwin; three brothers: Claude Wilcox and wife, Pat of Kingsport, Ronald Wilcox and wife Patty of Bluffton, SC and Jim Wilcox and wife Wanda of Unicoi; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 8 P. M. Thursday in the Chapel of Unicoi Funeral Home.  Revs Thurman Sullivan and Brett Jones will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 2 P. M. Friday in the Evergreen Cemetery in Erwin.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 P. M. Thursday, prior to the service at Unicoi Funeral Home.
