Even after spending more that half a century a great distance from home and family, Jack remained devoted to both; during the last decade of his mother’s life, he was faithful to phone her daily simply to visit.  He also remained dedicated to his southern values.  A home healthcare nurse said of him, “I always want to shake Jack’s hand before I leave him.  He is everything I think of as a ‘Southern Gentleman’.”
