OTTIS HUDGINS

Ottis Hudgins, 92, of Prices Creek, went home to be with the Lord Monday, March 9, 2015 at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Woodfin and Clete Arrowood Hudgins.  He was also preceded in death by daughters:  Mary Ann and Jewell Ann, and a son, Benny Hudgins; 3 brothers:  Zeb, Wayne and Alvin Hudgins; and 2 sisters:  Amanda Elkins and Ellen McPeters.  Ottis was a logger, farmer, enjoyed carpentry work and ginsenging and was a very loving husband and father.

 

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Kathleen Austin Hudgins; 13 children:  Michael Hudgins and wife, Linda, of Burnsville, Susie Hughes of Bakersville, Justin Hudgins and wife, Denise, and Gary Hudgins and wife, Marlene, of Burnsville, Milas Hudgins and wife, Donna, of Buladean, Benjamin Hudgins, Joyce Hughes, Dennis Hudgins and wife, Caroleen, Kathy Robinson and husband, C.J., and Lynn Hudgins  all of Burnsville, Louise Hudgins of Spruce Pine, Darlene Trittin and husband, Chuck, of Bakersville, Janina Branch and husband, Bo, of Burnsville; a sister, Effie Austin of Burnsville; 39 grandchildren and 59 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Grandsons, Rev. Charlie Robinson and Rev. Jonathan Hudgins and Rev. Dale Banks will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Thursday in the Ottis Hudgins Family Cemetery on Prices Creek.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home.

FRED TALLENT

Fred Tallent, 93, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord Friday, March 6, 2015, at Care Partners Solace Center.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Thomas and Emma Tipton Tallent, and the husband of Doris Muriel Tallent who died in 2011.  He was also preceded in death by a son:  Frank Tallent; 2 sisters:  Maude Miller and Janie Whitson; 3 brothers:  Frank, Wesley and Nealy Tallent; and, a son-in-law:  Jake Honeycutt.  Fred was a World War II Army Veteran having served under Gen. George Patton.  He was a former employee of Mohasco and retired with the Town of Burnsville.  Fred was a member of Landmark Baptist Church.  He was a loving father, grandfather, neighbor and friend to all.

 

Surviving are 3 daughters:  Carolyn Honeycutt and Claude McIntosh, Norma Westall and Junior Grindstaff, and Becky Phillips and husband, Morris, all of Burnsville; grandchildren:  Heather Cutts and Mark O’Shiro, Todd Westall and Michelle Blakeman and daughter, Elise, Shane Honeycutt and wife, Shelly, Holly Wilson and husband, Austin, and Laken Cook and husband, Heath; great grandchildren:  Hunter and Harper Wilson, Kevin and Austin Crave, and Mason Honeycutt; and, a brother:  Clyde Tallent of Asheville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 6:30 PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. David Bryant will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Monday in Byrd Cemetery at Ramseytown.

 

The family will receive friends from 5 until 6:30PM Sunday at the funeral home.

DOROTHY HENSLEY McCURRY

Dorothy McCurry, 90, of Lickskillet, passed away Monday, March 2, 2015 at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Silas and Ida Hampton Hensley and the wife of Alvin McCurry, who passed away in 2012.    She attended Bald Mountain Church.

 

Surviving are 3 daughters:  Mary Elizabeth Blankenship, Nancy Carolyn Wilson and husband, Reed, and Frieda Robinson; 3 sons:  Junior McCurry and Peggy, Jerry McCurry and Darlene, and Stuart McCurry and Regina, all of Burnsville; 8 grandchildren:  Tammy Shepherd, Stephanie Stroupe, Jennifer Wyatt, Heather Hall, Jeremy Robinson, Chris McCurry, Shawn McCurry and Jerri Lynn McCurry; 7 great grandchildren:  Sarah and Jessica Hall, Chase Wyatt, KayLynn Robinson, Lauren Robinson, Jeremy Dwayne Robinson and Austin Stroupe, and a sister Cara Ollis of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Roscoe Briggs, Jr. and Keith Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the Academy Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times will be at the home of Junior McCurry on Boone Ridge Drive.

ROY BLANKENSHIP

Roy Blankenship, 79, of Pensacola, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, February 28, 2015 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Ray and Osie Atkins Blankenship and the husband of Carolyn Judy Ogle Blankenship, who died in 2008. He was also preceded in death by a son Raymond Douglas Blankenship.  He was a member of Pensacola Free Will Baptist Church.  Roy was a carpenter, tobacco farmer, an avid hunter, enjoyed digging ramps and ginseng and playing his mandolin.

Surviving are his wife, Mary McCurry Blankenship; a daughter: Connie Robertson and husband Jeff; a son; Rev. Keith Blankenship and wife Judy; a sister: Raylene Anglin and husband Ralph; brothers: Jerome Blankenship and wife Pauline, Gene Blankenship and wife Linda and David Blankenship and wife Eloise all of Burnsville; grandchildren: Brian Blankenship and wife Collette; Ashley Pittman and husband Kelly, and Amanda Howell and husband Niles David; great grandchildren: Alexis Cooper, Carly and Halli Howell and Rylie, Ruben and Addison Blankenship; a step daughter: Jennifer Wyatt of Arden and a step grandson: Chase Wyatt.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P. M. Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Keith Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the Garrett Ray Cemetery at Pensacola.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2PM, prior to the service, at the funeral home.

BILLIE DORIS WHEELER

Billie was born in Pensacola, North Carolina on Sunday, May 7, 1922, the daughter of the late Kelley E. and Elizabeth Caroline Sneed Wood.  Billie passed into the presence of her Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, February 23, 2015 at Flesher’s Assisted Living in Fairview.  In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, James Carson Wheeler and siblings:  Delcie Wood, Della W. Wilson Riddle, Quincy Wood, Kenzie Wood, Lillus W. Rice, Clarence E. Wood, Gaynell W. Wolf and Erma W. Nanney. 

 

As a child, Billie grew up in Pensacola and attended Laurel Branch Baptist Church.  At an early age, she had an opportunity to gain formal education at Dorland Bell School for Girls in Hot Springs.  Billie graduated from Burnsville High School.  In 1944, along came James and life became one song of love and devotion for 65 years.

 

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

 

To celebrate Billie’s memory, a funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, February 27, 2015 in Laurel Branch Baptist Church of which she was a member and where she sang in the choir.  Rev. Ray Strickland will officiate.  Due to inclement weather, there will be no graveside service.

 

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.

CHRISTINE McCURRY WILSON

Christine McCurry Wilson, 76, of Yancey County, went home to be with the Lord Monday, February 23, 2015 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late John B. and Lena Mae Geouge McCurry.  Christine was a devoted Christian, homemaker and animal lover.

Surviving are her husband of 53 years, J. B. Wilson; a sister: Lavonia Buchanan of Burnsville; three brothers; Wayne McCurry and wife Wilma and Tony McCurry and wife Pat all of Burnsville and Wade McCurry and wife Rosalyn of Mitchell County. Several nieces and nephews and special friends Barbara Fox and Mike and Mary Lou Wilson also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P. M. Thursday, February 26, 2015 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Ccharles Carroll will officiate. 

Burial will be in the McCurry Family Cemetery on Cane Branch.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

FLOYD V. ROBERTS

Floyd V. Roberts, 60, of the Pensacola Community, passed away Friday, February 20, 2015 at his home. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Earl J. and Elizabeth Roland Roberts.

 

Surviving are sisters: Dianne Owenby of Asheville, Verna Davis and husband, Don, of Fletcher, Jean Sawyer of Winston-Salem, NC and Mary Sawyer and husband, Robert, of Roper, NC; and a brother: Matthew Roberts and wife, Pam, of Plymouth, NC.

 

A memorial service will be held at a later date. 

 

Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home is assisting the Roberts family.

FLORENCE VIVIAN WOODY

Florence Vivian Woody, 91, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, February 14, 2015, at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late William and Lizzie Ramsey Presnell, and the wife of Ward D. Woody who passed away in 2009.  She was also preceded in death by a daughter: Joleene Foxx; sisters: Viola Jarrett, Vera Hughes and Bessie McCain; and brothers; Virgil and Vernon Presnell. Florence was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter: Carolyn Crowder and husband, Gay, of Newton; a  son: George L. Woody and wife, Marie, of Burnsville; son-in-law: Robert Foxx of Hickory; granddaughters: Roberta Foxx, Robin Whitner and husband, Tim, and Lisa Royal and husband, Alan; grandsons: James Woody and  wife, Susan, Kenneth Woody and wife, Sharon, Michael Woody, Tim Crowder and Robert Foxx, Jr.; great grandchildren: Brittni, Jesse, Faith and Sabrina Woody; sister-in-law: Marie Presnell of Green Mountain; and, numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 7 PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Todd and Matthew Robinson will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Friday in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 PM, Thursday, prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff of Brookside Rehab and Care for the care given their mother.

NELLE STYLES HOOVER

Nelle Styles Hoover, 88, of Celo, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, February 13, 2015 at Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals.  A native of McDowell County, she was a daughter of the late Lawson and Bertha Shuford Styles, and the wife of James Hoover, who passed away in 2007.  She was also preceded in death by sisters Ruth Johnson, Colleen Laughridge and Jean McMahan.

Surviving are a daughter: Deborah Hoover of the home, three sons: James “Buster” Hoover of the home, Mike Hoover and wife Karen of Black Mountain and Jerry Hoover and wife Sandra of Swannanoa; granddaughters: Heather Osteen and Shelley Keith, grandsons: Rob, Derek, Jamie and Matt Hoover; great grandchildren: Sage, Izabel, Lola, Jeremy, Harrison, Jackson, James, Ethan, Elizabeth, Alexandra, Chelsea and Abigail; and two brothers: Lawson Styles of Hickory and Bobby Styles of Marion.  She was much loved by many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 4 P. M., Saturday, February 21, 2015 at Celo United Methodist Church, of which she was a member.  Rev. Brad Hinton will officiate.  The family will receive friend one hour prior to the service at the church.

BROWN HERMAN TIPTON

Brown Herman Tipton, 76, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, February 12, 2015 in Mission Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Woodrow and Mary Fox Tipton.  He was also preceded in death by an infant sister, Doreen; and a sister, Mildred Tipton Hensley.  A US Army Veteran, Brown was a member of Peterson’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.  He was a loving father, grandfather and friend to all who knew him.

 

Surviving are his wife, Jodie Russell Tipton; 2 daughters:  Kellie Tipton and Robin Wilson of Newdale; 2 grandchildren:  Bryson and Brayleigh Wilson who were the light of his life; a brother, Gene Tipton and wife, Christine, of  Burnsville; and a sister, Marsha Tipton of Burnsville.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3 PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Donald Whitson will officiate.  Burial will be in the Howell Cemetery on Patterson Branch. 

 

The family will receive friends from 1 until 3 PM Sunday prior to the service at the funeral home.
