HAL YOUNG

Hal Young, 81, of Ridge Road, Green Mountain passed away Monday, December 8, 2014 at the NC State Veterans Nursing Home in Black Mountain.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Ralph and Lena G. Masters.  Hal was a US Army Veteran and co-owner of Bryant and Young Lumber Company.

 

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Faye Presnell Young; and a son, Jeffrey Hal Young and wife, Pam, of Green Mountain.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Tony Norris will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Thursday in the Woody Cemetery on Ridge Road.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

GENEVA ROBINSON

Geneva Robinson, 76, of Bald Creek, went home to be with the Lord Friday, December 5, 2014 at her home. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Ellis and Zilla Robertson Ray. She was also preceded in death by a sister Frances Flynn and nephew Stanley Flynn.

 

Surviving is her husband of 56 years: Warren Robinson; 2 daughters Sandra Robinson Hughes of Green Mountain and Beverly Ingle and husband Jon of Burnsville; a son: Rev. Randall Robinson of Burnsville; grandchildren: Tiffany Woody and husband Jake, Anthony Hughes, Josh, Ashley and Megan Robinson, Kailey and Kohner Ingle, and a great grandson: Andrew Cooper Robinson;  3 sisters; Rosetta Thomas of Nebo, Louise Briggs of Micaville and Norma Jean Silvers and husband Stanley of Burnsville, and a brother Donald Ray and wife Joann of Bald Creek.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Monday in Windom Baptist Church, of which she was a member. Her son: Rev. Randall Robinson,  Rev. Ricky Woody and Rev. Darrin Waldroup will officiate. Burial will be in the Clifton Briggs Family Cemetery on Sam Jones Road.

 

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7PM Sunday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, where the body will remain until taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.

GERALD BURLESON

Gerald Burleson, 70, of Micaville, passed away Saturday, November 29, 2014, at his home.  Born in Madison County, he was a lifelong resident of Yancey County.  He was a son of the late Garrett and Estie Shepherd Burleson.  Gerald was preceded in death by 2 brothers:  Clyde and Robert Burleson.  He was a truck driver and monitor repairman.  Gerald was a member of Bowditch Union Church.

 

Surviving are his wife of 52 years:  Jean Thomas Burleson; a son:  Tim Burleson and wife, Sherry; 4 grandchildren:  Josh Burleson and wife, Kasey, Jacob Burleson and wife, Bethany, Jessica Burleson and fiancé, Wesley, and, Julie Burleson; and, 3 great grandchildren:  Lexi, Kellan and Levi.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Ronnie Whitson will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 10AM Tuesday in Chandler Cemetery on Holland Creek in Madison County.

 

The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8PM Monday prior to the service at the funeral home.

MADGE PETERSON

Madge Peterson, 85, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals in Asheville.  A native of Mitchell County, she was a daughter of the late John and Mary Miller Upton. Madge was a very special and unique person, loved by all who knew her.

Surviving are two daughters: Gail Parker and husband, Ossie, of Burnsville and Marsha Peterson of Yucaipa, CA.; a grandson: Jermaine Parker and wife, Angie; and three great grandchildren: Jazmyne, Kenyon and Griffen Parker, all of Asheville.  She also leaves to cherish her memory many good friends and relatives.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P. M. Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Junior Peterson and Richard Blanton will officiate.  Burial will be in the Marietta Atkins Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

VERN MILLER

Vern Miller, 78, of the Ramseytown Community of Yancey County passed away Sunday, November 23, 2014 at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Clay and Bertha Whitson Miller.  He was also preceded in death by sons, Marty and Jarried Miller.  He was a member of Millers Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.  Vern enjoyed his retirement years working in his shop making clocks.

 

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Esther Bennett Miller; a daughter, Debra Hughes and husband, Derek, and a brother, Don Miller, all of Burnsville; and a sister, Layne Miller of Greensboro.

 

In honoring his wishes, no services are planned.

DEWEY THOMAS (D.T.) GRIGGS

Dewey Thomas (D. T.) Griggs, 89, of Burnsville, passed away Sunday, November 23, 2014, at his home surrounded by his family.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Garland and Dealure Crow Griggs.  He was also preceded in death by his wife: Virginia Hensley Griggs, who passed away on November 16, 2013; a son-in-law:  Frank Carroll; and, a brother:   Aubrey Griggs.  He was a retired employee of Glen Raven Mills with over 40 years of service.  D. T. was a member of West Burnsville Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are 2 daughters:  Gloria Wilson and husband, Larry, of Burnsville, and Diane Carroll of Micaville; 3 sons:  Tommy Griggs and wife, Daphne, Darryl Griggs and wife, Cathy, and Randy Griggs and wife, Kristy, all of Burnsville; 9 grandchildren:  Angie Parker and husband, Jermaine, Candi Fox and husband, Mike, Casey Griggs and wife, Casey Jones Griggs, Cindy, Derek and fiancée, Kirstin McCurry, A. J., Kaleigh, Tiffany and Frank; and, 6 great grandchildren:  Brandon, Maci-Drew, Jazmyne, Kenyon, Griffen and Coda.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Pastor Charlie Carroway will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Tuesday in the McCracken Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7PM Monday, prior to the service at the funeral home.

TREVOR ANTHONY ABERNETHY

Trevor Anthony Abernethy of Burnsville, NC passed away Saturday, November 22, 2014. A native of Mecklenburg County, Trevor was born April 2, 1991.  Trevor was a hard working young man who took pride in providing for his family.  In addition to spending time with his children and family, Trevor loved to fish anytime anywhere.  Trevor was getting ready for his first hunting season with his father-in-law.  He had bought his first tree stand and was hoping to kill his first deer Thanksgiving Day. Trevor was a loving husband, father, son, grandson, brother, uncle, and friend.  He will be forever missed.

 

Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Brittany; son, Karsen; daughter, Lilly Anne;  his mother, Leisa Lawing Abernethy;  his father, Tony Abernethy;  his grandparents, Joan "Mimi" and Dickie Love, Harry and Debbie Lawing, and Lee Abernethy; his sister, Brittany Abernethy; a special aunt, Leigh Ann Brown; in-laws, Kelvin and Michelle Geouge and Danny and Angie Marlowe; sister-in-law, Makayla Marlowe, brother-in-laws, Douglas Geouge, Dallas Marlowe, Colton Marlowe and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his Nanny, Willie Mae McCoy.  

 

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at 3:00 pm at Hall's Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Holt Whitson, Jr. officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends and family one hour prior to the service at the church.

HOMER CORNICE FOX

At 73, born in Jacks Creek, Yancey County, North Carolina, Homer Cornice Fox has passed away at Baptist Health Medical Center on November 14, 2014 as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Interstate 40, Morrilton, AR the previous day.

 

Homer set out early to make his mark in the world by proudly serving in the United States Army.  He was a decorated veteran having served in Vietnam, Korea, Germany, Far East Pacific, Hawaii, South America and the Caribbean. He earned his rank of Sergeant Major (E9) and retired after 28 1/2 years as a soldier in the military with honors received including the Purple Heart, Legion of Merit and Joint Service Commendation Medal. He was enjoying the life of a retired military officer up until the time of his death.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents Isaac and Lyda Fox and survived by his wife Yong Fox; two daughters, Lydia Sykes and Jennifer Fox, eight siblings; Pansy Hatfield, Juanita Gibbs, Eugene Fox, Daniel Fox, CoraLee Bailey, Melvin Fox, Carmen Fox, Gail Gilbert, six grandchildren; Amber Carlton, Ciara Barrett, Brittany Fox, Derrick Fox, Denisha Sykes, Diamond Sykes and one great granddaughter Aliya Barrett.

 

Cremation services were held by Griffin Leggett Funeral Home in Conway, AR with memorial and burial services to be held by Pastor Campbell of West Burnsville Church of God in hometown of Burnsville, North Carolina at Wilson Branch Cemetery.

 

Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home is assisting the Fox family with arrangements in Burnsville.

JUNIOR CECIL HENSLEY

Junior Hensley, 85, of Burnsville passed away Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at Brookside Rehab and Care.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Crate and Dora Estep Hensley.

 

Surviving are his wife, Madeline Honeycutt Hensley; a daughter, Carolyn Hensley of Burnsville; and, a host of nieces and nephews.

 

No services are planned at this time.

CALVIN E. ROLAND

Calvin E. Roland, 77, of Deerfield Township in Bridgeton, NJ died Monday, November 10, 2014 following an extended illness.

Calvin was born in Yancey County on May 19, 1937 and was the son of the late Henry and Pearl Evans Roland. He was also preceded in death by all his brothers and sisters.  Since 1990, he had lived in Deerfield Township.  He was a supervisor and project manager for Centex Corporation whose home office is in Dallas, TX. During his working career, he participated in numerous building projects around the country.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Arlene E. Roland; a daughter, Carol A. Vest (Charles) of Hopewell Twp.; a son, Clyde Lee Roland (Rosetta) of Baltimore, MD; five grandchildren:  Charlie Vest (Emily), Jessie Vest, John Roland, Katie Roland and Jackie Lescallett; and three great grandchildren: William Martin, Emma Didier and Ella Sweet.

A memorial service will be held at 11 AM Saturday, November 15, 2014 at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St. in Bridgeton.  Pastor Robin Weinstein of the Bethany Grace Community Church will officiate.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10 until 11 AM Saturday prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the American Red Cross, South Jersey Chapter, 3 Parke Place Blvd., Sewell, NJ 08080 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
