JODIE FARTHING REESE DUGGER

Jodie Farthing Reese Dugger, 90, of Burnsville, passed away Saturday, October 4, 2014, at her home.  A native of Watauga County, she was a daughter of the late Rev. E. J. and Lula Greene Farthing.  She was also preceded in death by her husbands:  Asa L Reese, Jr. and Oran H. Dugger; an infant son; a son:  Michael Reese; stepson:  Larry Dugger; 3 sisters:  Alpha, Kizzie Mae and Lennis; and a brother:  Blaine.  Jodie grew up in the Bethel community of Watauga County.  A graduate of Mars Hill College she was a riveter during World War II on the P-47.  She and Asa L were house parents at Crossnore School for 13 years.  Jodie and Oran became residents of Burnsville in 1992 and she had been an active member at First Baptist Church since.

Surviving are her children:  Marilyn Robinson of Burnsville, and Asa Lowell Reese of Tryon; a daughter-in-law:  Mary Ann Dugger of Columbus, Ohio; 7 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a brother:  Edmund Farthing and wife, Hazel, of Vilas; and, a special friend:  Gordon MacFarlane.

 

A graveside service will be held at 3PM Wednesday in the Calvin Farthing Family Cemetery in Vilas.

 

A celebration of life service will be held at 2PM Saturday, October 11, 2014, at First Baptist Church of Burnsville.  Rev. Tommy James will officiate.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.

MAUDE HENSLEY BOONE

Maude Hensley-Boone of Burnsville went home to be with her Lord, Friday, October 3, 2014.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Rufus and Edgel Wilson Hensley.  Maude was the wife of Otto Boone, who died in 1986.  She was also preceded in death by her brother:  Dee Hensley.  Maude was a member of Covy Rock Freewill Baptist Church.  She was blessed with a beautiful voice and had been associated with quartets. Maude was also a soloist, having traveled in East Tennessee and Western North Carolina to sing.

 

Surviving are 3 nephews:  Rev. Marvin Hensley and wife, Debbie, of Bakersville, Rev. Tommy Hensley and wife, Pansy, of Green Mountain, and Billy Hensley of Burnsville; a sister-in-law:  Frances H. Hensley of Green Mountain; 2 great nieces; 5 great nephews; 2 great, great nieces; 2 great, great nephews; and, 2 special children:  Larry Banks and Tina Banks Sink of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Her nephews, Revs. Marvin and Tommy Hensley, and Rev. Russell Hughes will officiate. Burial will be in the Watts Cemetery on Lotties Creek.

 

The family will receive friends from Noon until 2PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

REVEREND J. D. PRICE

Reverend J. D. Price began the eternal life he had so longed for at approximately 4 A.M. Friday, October 3, 2014, at Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Johnson City, TN, he was a son of the late Reverend H. C. Price and Mabel Taylor Price.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his only son, Jimmy, who died January 10, 2014.

During the 52 years J. D. was called to preach, he ministered at many different churches and pastored at the following Free Will Baptist Churches:  Pensacola, Piney Grove, Big Creek, St. Paul, Coxes Creek and The Remnant, all located in North Carolina and Tennessee.  J. D. was involved with landscaping and construction, and in the design and construction of several area churches.  He was a member of Johnson City Masonic Lodge #486. 

Surviving are his loving wife of 52 years:  Carolyn Carr Price; his mother-in-law and special friend:  Bea Carr; his pride and joy, grandson:  Aaron Price; and faithful daughter-in-law: Debbie Price of Marion; three brothers H. C. Price and wife, Joan, and Steve Price and wife, Sally, all of Johnson City, and Wayne Price and wife, Gloria, of Charlotte; 6 nieces and nephews; 4 great nieces and great nephews and a special helper:  Carson Mullins.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P. M. Monday in the Chapel of Morris-Baker Funeral Home in Johnson City.  The Reverends Kenny Schultz, Randy Randolph, Tommy Hensley and Todd Robinson will officiate.  Burial will be in the Happy Valley Memorial Cemetery in Elizabethton, Tn.

The family will receive friends from 12 Noon until 1:30 P. M. Monday, prior to the service at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Remnant FWB Church, c/o Steve Price, 1704 Woodridge Drive, Johnson City, TN 37604.

BOYD MOORE

Boyd Moore, 82, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, September 28, 2014 at Mission Hospitals St. Joseph Campus.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Rev. Sam and Mollie Bryant Moore.  He was also preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Wilson Moore who died in 1994; a son, Michael Boyd Moore; a sister, Pansy Huskins; a brother, Coy Moore; and a special friend, Brooks Hensley.  Boyd was a retired employee of Roberts Chevrolet.  He attended Carmen Church of God in Madison County.

 

Surviving are his wife: Carrie Jane Moore; a son: Gerald Moore and wife, Wanda; granddaughter:  Kaitlyn Moore; grandsons:  Michael and Brandon Moore all of Burnsville; 3 sisters:  Lillian Landreth of Pisgah Forest, Maxine Hensley of Green Mountain and Mildred Young of Bakersville; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a step-daughter:  Patricia Landers and husband, Leonard; and step-son:  Tommie Shelton and wife, Linda, all of Madison County; and, several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Eric Young will officiate.  Burial will be in the Emmitt Wilson Family Cemetery at Pensacola.

 

The family will receive friends from 12 Noon until 2 PM Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home.

NORA GEAN HYATT

Nora Gean Hyatt, 70, of Pensacola, went to be with the Lord Thursday, September 11, 2014, at Brookside Rehabilitation & Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Irene Riddle Hyatt.

 

Surviving are 2 sisters:  Doris Silver of Burnsville and Patsy Marshall and husband, Butch, of Asheville; and, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Norman Lovelace will officiate.  Burial will be in the Circle of Faith Cemetery at Pensacola.

 

The family will receive friends from 12 Noon until 2PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

DONALD 'KENT' SHEHAN

Donald “Kent” Shehan, 62, of Micaville passed away Monday, September 8, 2014 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Bobby and Betty Hall Shehan.  He was also preceded in death by his sister, Sherry Shehan McMillan.  Kent graduated from Annapolis Senior High School in Annapolis, Maryland in 1970.  He joined the National Guard in 1971; then, he returned to North Carolina as a carpenter.  He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

 

Surviving are his children: Lisa Housley, Sarah Carpenter, Kyle Shehan, and Sydney Shehan; 4 grandchildren; a brother, Keith Shehan; and several nieces and nephews.

 

A memorial service will be held at 7:00 PM Thursday in Clay Mound Baptist Church.  Rev. Keith Blankenship will officiate.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

MAFRA MANEY ROBINSON

Mafra Maney Robinson, 96, of Horton Creek, went to her Heavenly Home Saturday, September 6, 2014, at Brookside Rehabilitation & Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was preceded in death by grandparents:  Mr. and Mrs. W. N. Horton; parents:  John Wesley and Essie Horton Maney; husband:  Lewis Robinson; 2 sisters:  Annice Maney and Mary Alice Maney; and, 2 brothers:  Lee and Jack Maney.  Mafra was a lifelong member of Paint Gap Presbyterian Church.

 

Surviving are 2 sons:  Maurice Robinson and Philip Robinson and Faye, all of Burnsville; daughter:  Gwen and husband, William McKeown, of Springfield, MA; and, 2 sisters:  Grace Spires of Asheville and Margaret Clarke of Rialto, CA.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Joe Bennett will officiate.  Burial will be in Horton Hill Cemetery on Horton Creek.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 PM prior to the service at the funeral Home.

ILA MARIE McMAHAN

Ila Marie McMahan, 89, of Bee Branch, the Low Gap Community, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, August 30, 2014 at Mission Hospitals Memorial Campus.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Theodore and Pansy Ray Riddle and the wife of Wade McMahan who died in 2006.  She was also preceded in death by brothers Sam and Lee Riddle.

Surviving are a son: Larry McMahan and wife Christina; a granddaughter: Jessica Mack and husband Ben; a grandson: Jamie McMahan; great grandchildren: Larkin and Oliver Mack, a sister: Mary Glen Silver all of Burnsville and a step grandson: Justin Kelly of Mooresville.

Funeral services will be held at 3 P. M. Wednesday, September 3, 2014 in Low Gap Free Will Baptist Church, of which she was a loyal member.  Rev. Blaine Whitson will officiate.  Burial will be in the Ray-Riddle Cemetery, on Bee Branch Road. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

PAULINE CHANDLER

Pauline Buchanan Chandler, 85, of Burnsville passed away Sunday, August 24, 2014.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Waitsel Ray and Pantha Ogle Buchanan and the wife of Paul Chandler who passed away in 2001.  She was also preceded in death by brothers:  Ray Buchanan and Jack Ledford.  Pauline was a homemaker, a loving mother and grandmother.

 

Surviving are two daughters: Billie Jean Riddle and husband David of Mars Hill and Doris Stump and husband Kenneth of Burnsville; five sons: Harold Chandler of Mars Hill; L. B. Chandler of Marshall, Claude and Randall Chandler of Burnsville and Steven Chandler of Bakersville; two sisters: Nellie Chandler and Elizabeth Laws of Burnsville; two brothers: Bruce Ledford of Burnsville and John Ledford of Spruce Pine; 17 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

 

At her request, no services are planned.

Alexander Miles Dreyer

Alexander Miles Dreyer, age 33, of Celo, died suddenly after a brief illness on August 19, 2014. Miles was born in Yancey County in 1981. He learned glassblowing and flameworking at Penland School of Crafts and worked as an assistant for glass artists in Yancey County and in Maui, Hawaii. He taught glass workshops at Snow Farm in Massachusetts and at Penland School. After returning to Yancey County from Hawaii in 2008, he established a small glass studio with his wife, Polly Lorien, and he worked for Atomic Solar and then for Mountain Electronics. He also did weekly information collection from a Mount Mitchell weather station that is part of a national climate trends research project. He was a gardener, a cook, a problem solver, and a skilled maker of useful things. He was devoted to his family and to the community. The family would like to thank the dedicated doctors and nurses who did everything they could to try to save his life. We will miss him so much.

He is survived by his wife, Polly; his daughter, Ginger Mae Lorien; his brother, Julian Dreyer, of Asheville; his parents Robin Dreyer and Tammy Hitchcock, of Celo; and his grandmother, Donna Jean Dreyer, of Celo.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM on Sunday, August 31 under a tent at the Celo Community  soccer field on Hannah Branch Road, rain or shine. All are invited.
