DORIS HOLLIFIELD

Doris Hollifield, 66, of Pensacola, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Landon and Bonnie Pittman Rathburn.  She was also preceded in death by a sister, Helen Raper, and brothers:  Junior and Charles Rathburn.  Doris was a member of Pensacola Free Will Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are her husband of 47 years, Thad Hollifield; a daughter, Darlene Hollifield; a son, Keith Hollifield and wife, Barbara; 2 grandchildren:  Cody and Jake Hollifield; 2 sisters:  Lucille Banks and Joyce Briggs and husband, Mike; and, 2 brothers:  Gene Rathburn and wife, Frances, and Wayne Rathburn and fiancée, Jennie, all of Burnsville.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Keith Miller will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Saturday in the Eddie McMahan Cemetery at Low Gap. 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 PM Friday prior to the service at the funeral home

NINA HONEYCUTT

Nina Honeycutt, 76, of Georges Fork, went home to be with the Lord Monday, August 11, 2014, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Garvel and Cora McIntosh Honeycutt.  She was also preceded in death by daughters:  Ginger and Regina; and, brothers:  G. B. and Rev. Jerome Honeycutt.  She loved hiking, digging ginseng and attending Banks Creek Bible Church.  “Red Nanny” was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

Surviving are a daughter:  Cynthia Fortner; sons:  Jeff Honeycutt and fiancée, Becky Bradford, and Rev. Steve Robinson and wife, Xan, all of Burnsville; 3 sisters:  Joyce Van Patton of Old Fort, Norma Branton and husband, Wayne, and Mary Burnett, all of Burnsville; 8 grandchildren; and, 8 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 8PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Her son, Rev. Steve Robinson, will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Thursday in Youngs Chapel Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home.

ROBERT EARL BURGIN

Robert Earl Burgin, 88, of Celo, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, August 7, 2014, at the Charles George VA Medical Center.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Bob and Mattie Westall Burgin.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years:  Maxie Buchanan Burgin, who died August 28, 2013; and, 3 sisters:  Mamie Lee Grindstaff, Pauline Carroll and Lucille Robinson.  He was a World War II US Army Veteran and a retired employee of American Thread.

Surviving are 2 sons:  Edward “Buster” Burgin and wife, Patty, of Rutherfordton and Lyndon Burgin and wife, Rita, of Burnsville; 2 grandsons:  Nolan Shane Burgin of Marion and Jamie Burgin and wife, Jennifer, of Forest City; 2 great grandchildren:  Macie and Ethan Burgin.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Sunday in Celo United Methodist Church, of which he was a member.  Revs. Brad Hinton and Charles Carroll will officiate.  Burial will be in Autrey Cemetery at South Estatoe Baptist Church with military graverites conducted by Sgt. E. L. Randolph Chapter 57, DAV.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Saturday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The body will be taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the funeral service.

ROBERT E. 'BOBBY' MARSH

Robert E. “Bobby” Marsh, 81, of Micaville, went home to be with the Lord Friday, August 1, 2014, at Brookside Rehabilitation & Care.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late James and Irene Robinson Marsh.  He was also preceded in death by a sister:  Shirley Marsh; and, a grandson:  Mark McMahan.  Bobby was a Korean War US Army Veteran.

Surviving are 2 daughters:  Janie Stanbery of Boone and Michelle Cook and husband, Rick, of Spruce Pine; grandchildren:  Bryan McMahan of Burnsville, Taylor, Joseph and Jeremiah Cook of Spruce Pine; a great granddaughter:  Whitley McMahan of Burnsville; 2 sisters:  Janice Grove of Micaville and Charlene Ray and husband, Tommy, of Marion; and, a brother:  Jim Marsh and wife, Sue, of Micaville. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 7PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Pete Peterson will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 2PM Tuesday in Holcombe Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

CHARLES WILLIAM RATHBURN

Charles William Rathburn, 73, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at his home.  A lifelong resident of Yancey County, he was the son of the late Landon and Bonnie Pittman Rathburn.  He was also preceded in death by a sister:  Helen Rathburn Raper; and, a brother:  Junior Rathburn.  Charles was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

 

Surviving are his wife of 52 years:  Mary Elna Hollifield Rathburn; 2 daughters:  Jackie Rathburn Grier and husband, Johnny, and Kathy Rathburn Davis and husband, Butch; 2 sons:  Donald Rathburn and wife, Cheryle, and Ronald Rathburn and wife, Beverly, all of Burnsville; 6 grandchildren:  Michael Grier and Amanda, Jessica Grier Elliott and husband, J.R., Mark Rathburn and wife, Tasha, Kristina Rathburn, Shane Rathburn, and Crystal Thomas Boone and husband, Josh; 5 great grandchildren:  Destiny Neveh Elliott, Marieh Grace Rathburn, Adyen Kelley and Madison Jade Grier and Colston Uriah Boone; 3 sisters:  Lucille Rathburn Banks, Joyce Rathburn Briggs and husband, Mike, and Doris Rathburn Hollifield and husband, Thad;  and, 2 brothers:  Gene Rathburn and wife, Frances, and Wayne Rathburn and fiancée, Jennie, all of Burnsville.  Numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11AM Saturday, August 2, 2014, in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Philip Garland and Keith Blankenship will officiate.  Burial will be in the Eddie McMahan Cemetery in Pensacola. 

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Friday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, and at other times will be at the residence on Highway 197 South.

KENNETH AUTREY

Kenneth Autrey, 92, of Burnsville went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Lonnie and Dora Silvers Autrey.  He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy Young, and two brothers:  John B. and Larry Autrey.  He was a World War II Army Veteran.  Kenneth was co-owner of Burleson & Autrey Tire Service and a member of West Burnsville Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Ruby Lytle Autrey; a granddaughter, Tammy Woody and husband, Charles; and a great grandson, Hunter Woody all of Candler; a son-in-law, James Young and wife, Priscilla, of Arden; sisters-in-law:  Shirley Childers of Marion and Helen Groner of Tampa, FL; and a brother-in-law, Earl Lytle of Marion.

 

Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Burial will be in the West Burnsville Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

BRENDA ADKINS

Brenda Adkins, 64, of the Huntdale Community went to be with the Lord Monday, July 28, 2014 at Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals.  A native of Yancey County, she was the daughter of Dollie Bryant Adkins of Green Mountain and the late Ernest Adkins.  She was also preceded in death by a brother, Raben Adkins and a sister-in-law, Elsie Barnett Adkins.

 

Surviving, in addition to her mother, is an aunt, Mae Randolph of Inman, SC.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Pastor Joe Brown will officiate.  Burial will be in the White Oak Flats Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

UNA RANDOLPH

Una Randolph, 79, of the Big Creek Community went home to be with the Lord Thursday, July 24, 2014 at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late John and Leona Adkins Whitson.  She was also preceded in death by a sister, Trula Banks and brothers:  Fred, Shurl, Jack and Floyd Whitson.  Una was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and worked for many years as a caregiver.

 

Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Dexter Randolph; a daughter, Heather DePriest and husband, Jamie, of Gray, TN; two sons:  Gerald Randolph and wife, Karen, of Burnsville and Victor Randolph and wife, Lisa, of Rogersville, TN; a sister, Ruth Peterson of Erwin, TN; a brother, Brooks Whitson of Unicoi, TN; 9 grandchildren:  Becki Morrison and husband, Jerry, Willie, Jerried, Michael and Chris Randolph, Leslie Silver and husband, Johnny, Brandon Randolph and wife, Ashley, and Caleb and Connor DePriest; a step granddaughter, Haley Hill; 8 great grandchildren:  Nikki and Haley Morrison, Trevor, Gabe and Alivia Silvers, and Jacob, Ava and Peyton Randolph; 2 step great grandsons:  Alex and Bentley Hill; and a special caregiver, Alison Miller.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Saturday in Big Creek Free Will Baptist Church, of which she was a member.  Revs. Marvin Hensley and Adam Miller will officiate.  Burial will be in the Hughes Cemetery at Big Creek.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

MEDIA REBECCA JONES

Media Rebecca Jones, 89, of Micaville, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation in Spruce Pine.  A native of Swain County, she was a daughter of the late John and Fannie Jones, and the wife of Sam Jones, who died in 1996.  She was also preceded in death by a sister:  Bonnie Baines; 2 brothers:  Bennett and Hoie Jones; a stepdaughter:  Violet Carroll; and, a step grandson:  Roger Jones.  Media was a member of Pleasant Gap Baptist Church.  She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and friend who always put the needs of others before her own.

Surviving are a son:  Dennis Jones and wife, Oma, of Spruce Pine; 2 stepsons:  J. B. Jones and wife, Peggy, of Burnsville and Clarence Jones and wife, Sudie, of Charlotte; a stepdaughter:  Deola Hutchins of Webster, NY; a sister:  Gladys Oliver of Redding, CA; a brother:  Grady Jones and wife, Bobby, of Bryson City; a granddaughter:  Whitney Jones; 11 step grandchildren:  Randy, Tim and Tracy Jones, Kim Boone, Marsha Greene, Robin Tarleton, Darrell, Denise and Lisa Hutchins, Nicole Flanagan and Rick Carroll; 18 step great grandchildren; and, 10 step great, great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 7PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Steve Williams and Bobby Greene will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Saturday in the Fred Young Cemetery at Pleasant Gap.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

CARL J. RANDOLPH

Carl J. Randolph, 81, of Fort Mill, SC, passed away Sunday, July 20, 2014 at Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House in Rock Hill, SC.   A former resident of Burnsville, he was a son of the late J. Carter and Ruby Brookman Randolph.  He was a US Navy Korean War Veteran, a former employee of Thurston Motor Lines and retired from Averitt Motor Line, who honored him as the “Best of The Best in Driving.”  Carl was faithful to God and his church, The Sisk Memorial Church of Fort Mill for 34 years.  He was a Charter Member of Burnsville Lodge #717 AF & AM and a member of Hejaz Shrine Temple.

 

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, June Randolph of Fort Mill; sisters-in-law:  Nina McCurry and husband, Wayne, of Fort Mill, Daphne Wilson of Rock Hill and Janette Roper of Burnsville; and, several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Pastor Tom Tucker and Pastor Carl Williams will officiate.  Masonic graverites will be conferred by Burnsville Lodge.  Burial will be in the McIntosh-Randolph Cemetery on Little Creek.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
