CHRISTINE HARDING

Christine Effler Harding, 73, of Burnsville, passed away Thursday, October 13, 2016 at her home.  A native and lifelong resident of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Tilda Effler Woods and James Woods.  She was preceded in death by an infant daughter; brothers:  Arnold, Welzie and Edd.  Christine was a retired employee of Baxters, where she was known as “Granny”.

Surviving are two sons:  Johnny Harding of Pensacola, Florida and Christopher Wade Harding of Burnsville; lifelong partner of 36 years:  Chester Henson; 3 granddaughters:  Aleshia Harding, Crystal Harding and Gracie Harding; a great-grandson:  Malaki Harding; a brother:  Gail Effler, of Burnsville; a sister: Thelma Lockman of Marion; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 3 PM Sunday, October 16, 2016, in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Scott Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in the Marietta Atkins Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

LISA DeHART

Lisa DeHart, 53, of Burnsville, passed away Monday, October 10, 2016 at her home. She was a native of Mecklenburg County.  In her life of service, she served the poor, sick and dying as a compassionate and caring social worker.  Lisa was a loving and devoted wife and mother.

Surviving are her husband of 23 years, Rush Austin; a son Lucas DeHart of Burnsville; her mother: Wilma Nance of Indian Trail, NC; her father: Billy Lee Nance of Mount Pleasant, NC; a sister: Susan Lamarre of Gold Hill, NC; and two brothers: Richard Nance of Indian Trail and Patrick Nance of Mount Pleasant.

A private family service will be held.

JOHN JOSEPH BUDER

John Joseph Buder, 71, of Asheville, passed away Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at Charles George V A Medical Center in Asheville due to brain cancer and is now in the hands of the Lord.Born March 22, 1945 in White Plains, NY, he was the eldest son of the late Joseph Patrick and Lillian Byrd Honeycutt Buder. He was also preceded in death by his maternal grandparents; Wade Avery and Fannie Byrd Honeycutt of the Byrd Branch Community and paternal grandparents; John and Mary Stuchel Buder of New York City.  John was a US Navy Veteran, having served during the Vietnam War on the survey ship USS Maury, (DD-401) that was mapping the Vietnamese coastline.

He attended Duke University and completed his Bachelor’s Degree in history at the University of Texas, Austin.  John earned his Master’s Degree in the History of Medicine, with his thesis topic, ‘The History of Smallpox Vaccination’.

Surviving are his sister; Carol Lillian Buder and younger brother; George Walter Buder, both of Bethesda, Maryland.

A funeral mass will be held at 3 P. M. Thursday, October 13, 2016 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Burnsville.  Father Fred Werth will officiate.  Burial will be in the Honeycutt Cemetery on Coxes Creek, with military graverites by Sgt. E. L. Randolph, Chapter 57, DAV.

RONNIE BIGGERSTAFF

Ronnie Biggerstaff, 60, of Burnsville, passed away Friday, October 7, 2016, at John F. Keever Solace Center in Asheville.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Paul and Christine Glass Biggerstaff.  He was also preceded in death by an infant brother:  David Paul Biggerstaff.  Ronnie was the former owner and operator of Blue Ridge Hardware.  He was a “father figure” to many, and devoted his life to his children.

 

Surviving are a daughter:  Tessa Biggerstaff; and a son:  Alex Biggerstaff and fiancée Brooke White, all of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Joe Bennett will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 10:30AM Wednesday in the Grover Hunter Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Tuesday prior to the service at the funeral home

CLYDE TALLENT

Clyde Tallent, 91, formerly of Prices Creek, passed away Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at Stonecreek Health and Rehabilitation in Asheville.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Thomas and Emma Tipton Tallent and the husband of Wanda Sue Barnett Tallent, who died in 2004.  He was also preceded in death by sisters: Maude Miller and Janie Whitson and brothers: Frank, Wesley, Nealy and Fred Tallent.  Clyde was a World War II Navy Veteran.

Surviving are sons: Tom Tallent and wife Cheryl of Asheville and Tim Tallent. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Graveside services will be held at 2 P. M. Thursday, October 6, 2016,  in the Academy Hill Cemetery. Rev. Denver Styles will officiate.  Military graverites will be conducted by Sgt. E. L. Randolph, Chapter 57, DAV.

LARRY DEAN CARPENTER

Larry Dean Carpenter, 70, of Burnsville, passed away  Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at home.  A native of Mitchell County, he was the son of the late James Carpenter.  Larry was a Viet Nam Era Army Veteran and a roofer by trade.  He is preceded in death by brothers:  Jesse and Jay Carpenter; and a sister:  Shelby Buchanan. 

Survivors include his wife:  Charlotte; sons:  Steve Carpenter, and wife, Wendy, and Bradley Carpenter; his mother:  Elizabeth Carpenter; and sisters:  Jenney Briggs, and husband, Benny, Linda Harrell, and husband Roger, Betty Land, and husband, Gary, and Crystal Rowe; sister-in-law:  Mamie Carpenter; brothers:  Frank and Richard Carpenter; and grandsons:  Andrew and Greyson Carpenter.

A private family service will be held.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Mitchell County, 236 Hospital Drive, Spruce Pine, NC 28777.                          

RUTH McINTOSH

Ruth McIntosh, 88, of Pine Swamp Road, went home to be with her Lord Saturday, September 24, 2016 at John F. Keever Solace Center in Asheville.A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Carl and Etta Phillips Silvers and the wife of Roy McIntosh, who passed away in 2011. She was also preceded in death by sisters: Jenny, Eileen and Billie Marie and brothers: Rotha and Ossie Silvers.  Ruth was a former employee of Mohasco Industries loved quilting, gardening and her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

 

Surviving are her sons:  Roy Ronald “Ronnie” McIntosh and wife, Shelda, and Danny T. McIntosh and wife, Sharon; grandsons:  Scott McIntosh and wife, Stephanie, Jordan McIntosh and wife Michelle and Caleb McIntosh and great grandchildren:  Tyler, Kasey and Chanse McIntosh all of Burnsville and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Monday in West Burnsville Baptist Church, of which she was a member, and children’s Sunday school teacher for over fifty five years. The Revs. Denver Styles and Ricky Ray will officiate.  Burial will be West Burnsville Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church, and at other times will be at her home on Pine Swamp Road.

IRENE ROBINSON

Irene Robinson, 92, of Georges Fork, went home to be with the Lord Monday, September 19, 2016, at Spruce Pine Brian Center. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Jeter and Lillie Wilson Autrey, and the wife of Willie Robinson who died in 1978.  She was also preceded in death by an infant son: G. W. Robinson; brothers: Garland and Donald Autrey; and, a great-great granddaughter: Sarah Carpenter.

Surviving are two sons: Cleo Robinson and wife, Unieda, and Sherman Robinson and wife, Helen, all of Burnsville;  a brother: Ranus Autrey of Marion; five grandchildren: C. J. Robinson and wife, Kathy, Gary Robinson and wife, Julie, Derrick Robinson and wife, Chris, Tyrina Garland and husband, Rodney, and Christel McFarland and husband, Lee; 12 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Dale Banks will officiate. Burial will be in the Autrey Cemetery at South Estatoe Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, at the funeral home.

GENEVA HIGGINS ROGERS

Geneva Higgins Rodgers, of Burnsville, passed away Friday, September 16, 2016.  She  was born to Ed Carter Higgins and Mary Jane Duncan Higgins on December 11, 1916 in Higgins,NC.   As a young girl, she joined the Presbyterian Church in Higgins and remained a devout Presbyterian all her life, loving and volunteering in various positions within her churches.

Geneva attended Bee Log School and after graduation she attended Dorland-Bell School for Girls at Hot Springs. There she developed an interest in tennis, that interest gave way to gardening and cooking, much to the delight and benefit of family and friends.

Geneva worked for Winners Department Store for many years and later became a buyer for John Carrols of Asheville.   As a buyer she traveled extensively to New York City, Boston, Philadelphia and other cities visiting fashion shows in order to select the latest fashion in ladies clothing and apparel.

After retiring, she moved  back to Burnsville to be near her aging father.  She was preceded in death by her husbands: Carl Renfro, Henry Hudson, Gilmer Graham and Al Rodgers.  She was also preceded by sisters: Ruby Morehead, Elizabeth Barwick and Marjorie Oleson, and a brother Charles Higgins.

She is survived by sisters: Lucille Proffit of Corpus Cristi, TX and Frances Millican of Austin, TX and a brother: Russell (Sonny) Higgins and wife Amy of Abilene, TX., and several; nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Burnsville, Saturday September 24 at 11 AM.  Rev. Steve Elderbrock will officiate.   The family will receive friends at the Church, following the service.

LOTTIE HONEYCUTT LEDFORD MITCHELL

 

Lottie Honeycutt Ledford Mitchell, 85, of the Little Creek Community of Yancey County, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, September 14, 2016, at Smoky Ridge Health & Rehabilitation.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Geter and Cora Bell Honeycutt, and wife of the late Nealie Ledford and Frank Mitchell.  She was also preceded in death by brothers:  Troy, Coy and Cecil Honeycutt; and, sisters:  Lora Bell Turner, Rose Smith, Maphrie Taylor and MaryAnn Hensley; a step daughter:  Sheila Hughes; and a son:  Steve Ledford.  Lottie was a loving Mother and Mamaw.

 

Surviving are daughters:  Nina King, Valerie McCourry and husband, Danny, Laura Carmack and husband, J. W., and Kim Miller; 2 sons:  Terry Ledford and wife, Shelby, and Stanley Ledford and wife, Judy; 11 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; a sister:  Elizabeth Smith of Marion; brothers:  Melvin Honeycutt of Lenoir, Delane Honeycutt of Marion and Tom Honeycutt of Charlotte; and special friends:  William “Bill” Simmons and Gerald Peterson.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Brother Dayton Lewis will officiate.  Burial will follow in the Ledford Family Cemetery on Little Creek.

 

The family will receive friends from 12 Noon until 2PM Friday prior to the service at the funeral home.
