GARY LYNN MANEY

Gary Maney of Asheville, passed away Friday, February 7, 2014, at John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center after a brief illness.

Gary was a student at the Irene Wortham Adult Day Program.  He was preceded in death by Bill and Ellen Beaver.           

He is survived by Penny Beaver of Candler, and Jon, Darlene and Reilly Ponder of Asheville.

A memorial service will be held at 3 PM Sunday, February 16th in the Chapel of Trinity Baptist Church, 216 Shelburne Road, Asheville. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Irene Wortham Adult Day Program, 916 West Chapel Road, Asheville, NC 28803.

The family would like to extend a special "thank  you" for the wonderful care given to Gary by the Grasty Family, Staff of Irene Wortham and the staff of the Solace Center.

ANNIE SHUFORD AUTREY

Annie Shuford Autrey, 96, formerly of White Oak Creek, passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation in Spruce Pine.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late John Milt and Dora Harrison Shuford, and the wife of Ramon Autrey who died in 2000.  She was also preceded in death by a son:  John “Terrell” Autrey who died in 2008; brothers:  Lewis and Fred Shuford; a sister:  Essie Murphy; and 2 sons-in-law:  Hubert Wolfe and Jim Hughes.  Annie was a retired employee of American Thread.

Surviving are a son:  Roger Autrey and wife, Sharon, of Asheville; daughters:  Sheila Wolfe of Asheville, Carolyn Hughes of Black Mountain, Madelyn Gibbs and husband, John L. Gibbs, Jr., of Burnsville, and Joan Chrisawn and husband, Chuck, of Micaville; 18 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 5 great, great grandchildren; and, a sister:  Bonnie Hensley of Spruce Pine.

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Thursday in the South Estatoe Baptist Church, of which she was a member. Rev. Jeff Reecer will officiate.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

ERNEST WALLACE

Ernest Wallace, 83, of Boone Branch, went home to be with the Lord Friday, January 31, 2014, at Blue Ridge Hospital in Spruce Pine.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Doss and Elva Edwards Wallace, and the husband of Eva Thomas Wallace who died in 2012.  He was also preceded in death by 2 sisters:  Grace Cucumber and Ruby Measles; and, 2 brothers:  Ford and Ted Wallace.  Ernest was a member of Crabtree Baptist Church.

Surviving are 2 daughters:  Patricia Boone and husband, Ken, and Ernestine (Tiny) Fender and husband, Larry, all of Burnsville; 5 brothers:  Don Wallace and wife, Elaine, of Green Mountain, Pat Wallace and wife, Evelyn, of Burnsville, Ron Wallace and wife, Elsie, of Seneca, SC, Bill Wallace and wife, Mae, of Knoxville, TN, and Bob Wallace of Virginia; grandchildren:  Forrest, Angie, Misty and Lisa; great grandchildren:  Courtney, Jordan, Drew, Julie, Chloe, Josh, Tobey and Ethan; and a special sister-in-law:  Judy Hise and husband, Billy Ray (Heavy) of Spruce Pine.

Funeral services will be held at 3PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Dale Banks will officiate.  Burial will be in Crabtree Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

BRENDA PETERSON CANAAN

Brenda Peterson Canaan, 68, of Burnsville went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at her home surrounded by her family.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Claude and Virginia Bailey Peterson.  She was a former employee of OMC.  Brenda was a member of Bolens Creek Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are her husband of 25 years, Lee Canaan; a daughter, Pam Allen and husband, Jeff; and a son, Charlie Carroway and wife, Sherri, all of Burnsville; a step daughter, Laurie Onkels and husband, Ronnie, of Kenosha, WI; a step son, Todd Canaan; a sister, Claudette Carroll and husband, K. E.; 4 grandchildren:  Eden and Jenny Carroway and Juliana and Finley Allen; and a special friend, Micki Hoilman all of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7 PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Her son, Rev. Charlie Carroway and Niles Howell will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 10:30 AM Friday in the Fairview Cemetery at Horton Hill.

 

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 PM Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home.

EVELYN HOPE BAILEY

Evelyn Hope Bailey, 88, of Burnsville, passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at John F. Keever Solace Center in Asheville.  She was the daughter of the late H. Grady and Zula Ray Bailey.  She was a member of Bolens Creek Baptist Church.

 

A graduate of Burnsville High School, she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Music in 1946 from Woman’s College of The University of NC, Greensboro.  During summer vacations after her first two years of teaching public school music, she studied voice at Juilliard School of Music in New York. 

 

During three years as associate editor of The Yancey Record, a weekly newspaper at the time, she also served as Yancey correspondent to The Asheville Citizen-Times and continued writing Playhouse reviews for that newspaper during seven summers after resuming her music teaching career.

 

As partial fulfillment for her Master’s Degree in Library Science, awarded from Appalachian State University in 1969, she wrote a thesis entitled “Symphonic Music From Literary Sources.”  It is a critical analysis of 43 classical symphonic works written to describe certain literary works.

 

Her Master’s Thesis was accepted into the U.S. Office of Education’s Bureau of Research, known as Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC).  Consequently, ERIC published her Master’s Thesis on the Internet, where it is used today by music teachers and librarians in helping children listen intelligently to classical music and appreciate the literature that inspired the music.

 

After her retirement from Asheville City Schools, she was appointed Parkway Playhouse Historian in 1995 by William “Bill” Dreyer, Parkway Playhouse Managing Director at the time.  At his request, she published Vol. I of her Playhouse history, covering the first 25 years from its 1947 founding.  Vol. II covers the next 25 years through the 50th season.  A revised edition of Vol. I was published in 2006 as her contribution to the 60th Season, and the Times Journal newspaper published a full page of her Playhouse history on May 4, 2011, as her observance of the 65th Season.

 

During her eight years as president of Woman’s Club of Burnsville (2000-2008) she established two scholarships, $1,000 Eloise Briggs Scholarship in Nursing founded in 2002, and $1,000 Lili Kraus Classical Music Scholarship founded in 2004.

 

Surviving are several cousins, including:  Mary B. Hudson of Hendersonville, NC, Pat Ray of Belgrade, MT, June Fox of Newdale and John M. “Bill” Fouts of Troy, MI.

 

A visitation will be held from 2 until 2:30 PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Due to the weather, a graveside service will be held at 2:30 Sunday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Burial will be in the Academy Cemetery.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lili Kraus Classical Music Scholarship or to the Eloise Briggs Scholarship in Nursing.  Memorial donations may also be sent to Woman’s Club of Burnsville, c/o Renee Wessel, Treasurer, 341 Shepard Way, Burnsville, NC 28714.

DANNY B. ANGEL

Danny B. Angel, 65, of Burnsville gained eternal peace Monday, January 20, 2014 at John F. Keever Solace Center in Asheville.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Para B. and Nellie Vance Angel.  He was also preceded in death by a sister, Gen Angel Price and a brother, Bobby Angel.  He was a retired member of Burnsville Volunteer Fire Department with 23 years service.  Danny worked in Iraq for 6 years as an electrical contractor and spent most of his life in Yancey County as an electrician and mechanic.

 

Surviving are a daughter, Kristina Rathburn; her mother, Kathy; 3 sisters:  Hope Chandler and Shelby Silvers and husband, Ross, all of Burnsville and Ann Maguire and husband, Jim, of Wilmington; a brother, Tony Price of Jacksonville, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Richard Sullins and Donald Whitson will officiate.  Burial will be in the Daniels Cemetery in Avery County. 

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 P. M. Thursday at the home of Shirlyn Sullins on Westover Drive and from 5 until 7 P.M. Friday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.

CORA FOX ELKINS

Cora Elkins, 86, of Bakers Creek, passed away Sunday, January 19, 2014 in Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late J. Charlie and Lubergia Deyton Fox and the wife of Talmadge Elkins who died in 1987.  She was also preceded in death by a son, Roger Elkins; a grandson, Keith Sparks; sisters: Gladys Cordell, Myrtle Robinson and Axie Elkins; and a brother, John E. Fox.  Cora was a member of Bakers Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are three daughters: Vonda Owensby and husband, Don, Mary Thomas and friend, Frank Briggs, and Regenia Hensley and husband, Norman, all of Burnsville; two sons: Ernest Elkins and wife, Mildred, of Marion and Terry Elkins of Burnsville; 11 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; a great-great granddaughter; and two sisters: Maphra Robinson and Eula Walker both of Burnsville.

Funeral services will be held at 7 P. M. Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Royce Ball and Perry Norton will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 A. M. Tuesday in the Robinson Cemetery on Bakers Creek.  The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 P. M. Monday, prior to the service, at the funeral home.

MARIE EDGE

Marie Edge, 89, formerly of Micaville, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, January 15, 2014, at an assisted living facility in Statesville.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Troy McKinney Boone, and the wife of Thomas Gaston Edge who died in 1980.  She was a member of Crabtree Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter:  Janie Mayberry and husband, Ray; a son:  Tommy Edge and wife, Linda, all of Statesville; 4 grandchildren:  Jason and Josh Edge and Nick and Valerie Jenkins; and, 7 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Dale Banks will officiate.  Burial will be in the Micaville Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625.

BOYD CECIL DEYTON

Boyd Cecil Deyton, 76, of Green Mountain, passed into eternity, Monday, January 13, 2014 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Asheville.  A lifelong resident of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Cecil and Leora Tipton Deyton.  He was also preceded in death by brothers, Ben and Clyde Deyton.  He was an educator in the Yancey County School System for 36 years, served on the original Board of Trustees of Mayland Community College, and was a Charter Member of Clearmont Volunteer Fire Department.  He was a devoted member of Covy Rock Free Will Baptist Church and served as a community leader.  Mr. Deyton will be well remembered as a Christian, coach, teacher, principal, avid farmer, friend and strong supporter of his political party.

 

Surviving are his wife of 55 years: Billie Jo Mace Deyton; daughters: Barbara Tipton and husband, Tony, of Burnsville; Jeannie Miller and husband, Randy, of Pensacola; Suzy Peterson and husband, Stacey, of Green Mountain; Stacie Burleson and husband, Freddy, of South Toe and Katie Boone and husband, John, of Spruce Pine; grandchildren; Adam Tipton and wife, Jenny, Cody Tipton and wife, Erin, Nick Tipton, Melanie Bennett and husband, Jason, Bo Davis and wife, Casey, Toby Peterson and wife, Blythe, Corie and Casey Peterson, Britt, Cole and Jace Burleson, Macie and Trey Boone; great grandchildren: Carter and Callie Bennett; step grandchildren: Danielle and Tyler Miller; step great grandson: Mason Miller; a foster great grandson; 3 sisters: Hope Hensley, Helen Hughes and Doris Willis; 5 brothers: Lloyd, Clarence, Claude, Johnny and Donnie Deyton and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7 P. M. Thursday, January 16, 2014 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.

 

A graveside service will be held at 11 A. M. Friday, January 17, 2014 in the Cecil Deyton Family Cemetery on Charlie Deyton Road in Green Mountain.

 

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 P. M. Thursday, prior to the service, at the funeral home.

 

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Boyd C. & Billie Jo Deyton Scholarship Fund, which will be established for graduating seniors who plan to further their education.  The scholarship will be available for seniors from area counties.  These may be mailed to 5900 State Highway 197 North, Green Mountain, NC 28740. The donations may be made to the Boyd C. & Billie Jo Deyton Scholarship Fund.

 

Daddy will be missed most by his family for his ethical guidance and for his unconditional love and support.

FAYE MILLER BOOTH HUSKINS

Faye Miller Booth Huskins, 85, of Burnsville passed peacefully at UniHealth Post Acute Care in Moncks Corner, South Carolina on January 13, 2014.  She was born on July 15, 1928 in Wyoming County, West Virginia.  She was the daughter of the late Fred and Margaret Stewart Miller.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles J. Booth in 1978, and husband, Troy G. Huskins in 2013; brothers:  Ward, Bill, and Russell Miller; a sister, Marie Hobson; and a step-son, Tommy Huskins.

 

Surviving are a sister, Lucy Forry, and (Bob) of Florida; four sons:  Dr. Jack Booth and (Barbara) of Moncks Corner, SC, John Booth and (Barbara) of Winston Salem, NC, Bill Booth and (Luella) of Barhansville, VA, Tony Booth and (Regina) of Green Mountain; step-son, Jerry Huskins and (Edna); and, step-daughter-in-law, Shelia Huskins of Burnsville; 9 grandchildren:  Jackson Booth and (Stacy), Jeff Booth and (Meg), Heather Booth Joy, Jon Booth Mullins, Warren Booth and (Kristi), KariAnn Booth, Tricia Booth, Charlie Booth, Mason Booth and step-grandson, Nicky Huskins; 10 great grandchildren:  Noah, Lindsay, Cami, Molly, Hannah, Nathan, Hope, Lauren, Morgan and Sawyer; one step-great-granddaughter, Kennedy Huskins; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Thursday, January 16, 2014 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Rev. Philip Garland will officiate.  Burial will be in the Baxter Hobson Cemetery on Cook Town Road in Bakersville.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
