MAXIE BURGIN

Maxie Burgin, 82, of Celo, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, August 28, 2013, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine.  A native of Mitchell County, she was a daughter of the late Spurgeon and Estie Woody Buchanan.  She was also preceded in death by an infant sister:  Dorothy; a sister:  Evelyn Hensley; and, brothers:  John Tipton and Sherrill Buchanan.

 

Surviving are her husband of 65 years:  Robert Earl Burgin; 2 sons:  Edward “Buster” Burgin and wife, Patty, of Rutherfordton and Lyndon Burgin and wife, Rita, of Burnsville; 2 grandsons:  Nolan Shane Burgin of Marion and Jamie Burgin and wife, Jennifer, of Forest City; 2 great grandchildren:  Macie and Ethan Burgin; 3 sisters:  Lona Boston of Spruce Pine, Ruby McKinney and Lorene Harris of Newdale; a brother:  Jim Buchanan of Spruce Pine; and, several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Saturday in Celo United Methodist Church, of which she was a member, pianist and Sunday School teacher for many years.  Revs. Brad Hinton and Paul White will officiate.  Burial will be in Autrey Cemetery at South Estatoe Baptist Church.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Friday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, where the body will remain until taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.

 

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice of Yancey County, 856 Georges Fork Road, Burnsville, NC 28714.

JESSE "LEE" WALLACE

Jesse “Lee” Wallace, 87, of Stokesdale, formerly of Yancey County, passed away Monday, August 26, 2013, at Countryside Manor in Stokesdale.  A native of Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Ed and Jessie Peake Wallace.  He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years:  Juanita Bailey Wallace; daughter:  Dotty Wallace Jones; sister:  Katie W. Huskins; nieces:  Debbie and Eula Huskins, and great nephew:  Carlos Raul Izquierdo.   Lee grew up in Green Mountain, graduating from Clearmont High School in 1942.  He enlisted in the US Army in August 1944, completed basic training at Camp Wheeler, GA on Christmas Eve,  spent 2 days at home and departed from Boston Harbor on a ship for Europe.  Lee was assigned to the 14th Armored Division, 19th Armored Infantry Battalion, B Company, 1st Platoon Light Machine Gun Squad in France.  On Easter Sunday, April 1, 1945, his unit crossed the Rhine River into Germany.  On April 4, while advancing into Germunden, Germany, he was wounded by mortar fire and had to undergo surgery to remove shrapnel from his head.  Before he could return to the front lines the war ended.  Lee was awarded the Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman Badge and the Army Good Conduct Medal.  He was honorably discharged in 1946.

 

On January 31, 1948 he married the love of his life, Juanita Bailey.  He later graduated from Cecil’s Business College in Asheville and taught at Tipton Hill High School from 1948 – 1949 with Juanita. 

 

Lee was a man of many skills, including farming, logging, and being an ace mechanic, working for the Firth Carpet Plant in Burnsville, Foremost Screen Printing and Rockingham Bandag in Stokesdale.  There he also worked as a manager for Times Turn Around and as a Mail Carrier for the US Postal Service.  He had many passions, including history (Civil War and WWII) classic cars and service to his community, his Lord and Savior.

 

Surviving are his daughter:  Cathy Gauldin (William) of Stokesdale; son:  Ray Wallace (Michelle) of Oak Ridge; grandchildren:  Michael Gauldin (Shay), Laura Jones, Douglas Jones (Rebecca), Corey Gauldin (Amanda), Wyatt and Nathanael Wallace; great grandchildren:  Brent, Brittney and Blaine Gauldin, Matthew and Will Jones, and Tate Lawson; niece:  Jo Ann Swiger (Warren); nephews:  Doug and David Huskins (Patty); and, several loving cousins and a host of friends.

 

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 4PM Sunday, September 1, 2013, at Bald Creek United Methodist Church.  Rev. A. J. Moore will officiate.  Burial will be in the Peake-Wallace Family Cemetery on Upper Pig Pen.  Military graverites will be conducted by Sgt. E. L. Randolph Chapter 57, DAV.  A memorial service will also be held in Oak Ridge, NC at Bethel United Methodist Church at a later date.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Saturday, August 31, at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.

DEALES ROGER MACE

Deales Roger Mace, 74, of Coxes Creek Road in Marion, went home to be with Jesus, Sunday, August 25, 2013 at his home.  A native of McDowell County, he was a son of the late Roscoe and Eula Hollifield Mace.  Deales was a banjo picker who enjoyed bluegrass and gospel music and was a member of the Clear Creek Band.

 

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Rachel McMahan Mace; a brother:  Ray “Smokey” Mace and wife, Lila, of Marion and 3 nephews:  Jeffrey Davis, Lynn Ray Mace and Stuart Dwaine Mace.  

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Mike Shuford and Dr. George Ellis will officiate.  Burial will be in the Autrey Cemetery at South Estatoe Baptist Church.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to service at the funeral home.

ALBERT BOHUSLAVE KOSDERKA

Albert Bohuslave Kosderka (Al), 65, of Mulberry,Florida, went to be with the Lord on Sunday,  August 25, 2013.   Albert was born in Spokane, Washington on December 15, 1947.  He was preceded in death by an infant son and his parents.  Al served in the United States Navy, Seal Team 8 and was a disabled veteran.

 

Al was married to Sandra Jarrard on July 31, 1982; they were married 31 years.  Surviving, in addition to his wife, are four sons and 8 grandchildren.  Sons are Shawn Kosderka and wife, Paige, and their son, Freddie, of  Carrier, Mississippi, Brad Kosderka and wife, Tabitha, and their sons:  Evan, Lucas, Gary and Lane of Picayune, Mississippi, Josh Jarrard and wife, Brandy, their daughters:  Kiersten and Izzy and their son, Josiah, of Burnsville, and Matthew Kosderka and fiancé, Rachel Rayburn of Mulberry, Florida. He also has a surviving sister, Deanie Blunt of Sevier, Tennessee.

 

The funeral service will be held at 7 PM, Thursday, August 29 in the Family Worship Center in Lakeland, Florida.

HELEN ERNESTINE LOWERY HILL

Helen Ernestine Lowery Hill, 57, of Indian Creek, went to be with the Lord Sunday, August 25, 2013, at Mission Hospital in Asheville.  A native of Moulton, Alabama, she was a daughter of Bea Lowery of Decatur, Alabama and the late Ernest Lowery. She was a loving Mother and Nana.

Surviving, in addition to her mother, are Kenneth Hill, lifetime companion and friend; a daughter:  Kassie Lee Hill-Chandler; a son:  Luke Hill; and 2 grandchildren:  Brian Levi McIntosh and Jodi LeAnn Chandler, all of Burnsville; sisters:  Sheila Gillespie and Carolyn Cole and a cousin:  Debbie McNalley, all of Moulton; and, several other cousins and relatives.

Funeral services will be held at 7:30PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Pastor Jerry Shelton will officiate.  Burial will be at 12 Noon Saturday, August 31, 2013 in Red Hill Cemetery in Moulton.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30PM Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home to assist with funeral expenses.

PAULINE BOONE WARD DEAL

Pauline Boone Ward Deal, 94, of Denton, NC died Wednesday, August 21, 2013. Born May 17, 1919 in Yancey County, NC, she was a daughter of the late Willard and Sarah Buchanan Boone. Pauline was a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church. She loved attending church and working in her flower and vegetable gardens.

Pauline is survived by her husband, John Deal of the home; children, Doyle Ward and wife, Katherine of Hickory, NC, Ray Ward and wife, Ima Jean, and Rev. Harold Ward and wife, Mozelle, all of George Hildebran, NC; Rev. Gerald Ward and wife, Linda of Denton, NC, and Ruth Olsen and husband, Walter of Jefferson, NC; eleven grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and six great great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by siblings, Bob, Clarence, Claude, Ray, Reba, Leona, and Naomi.

Funeral services will be held at
1:00 p.m., Friday, August 23, 2013 at Faith Chapel Baptist Church with the Reverends Harold Ward and Marty Bess officiating. The graveside will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Plum Branch Baptist Church Cemetery in Burnsville. The family will receive friends Friday from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the church. Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

YVONNE BLOSSER EDGE

Yvonne Blosser Edge, 89, of Burnsville, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte on August 12, 2013. Yvonne was a devoted wife, loving mother and friend to many. She will be remembered for the way she exemplified goodness and faithfulness and for her unwavering positive attitude.

Yvonne was born in
Wooster, Ohio, and attended Oberlin School of Commerce. She was employed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, where she met Wallace B.
Edge, her husband of 66 years. She was employed by Yancey County Schools for 20 years.

Yvonne was a devoted member of
Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday School and Bible School and participating in Women's Circle and other volunteer activities.

Yvonne was preceded in death by her father, Howard A. Blosser; her mother, Ruth Blosser Carter and stepfather, A. Nick Carter, of Akron, Ohio, and a brother, Howard A. Blosser, Jr., of Kent,Ohio

Iin addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Suzanne Edge Adams of Charlotte and two sons: Wallace Stephen Edge and wife Sharon of Charlotte and Arthur Gregory Edge and wife Karen of Davidson. Beloved grandchildren are Shannon Russ (Greg) of Winston-Salem; Allison Edge of Brooklyn, NY; Spencer Edge of New York, NY; Patrick Adams of Richmond, VA; Mitchell Adams of Charlotte; and Corey Edge of Davidson; and great-grandchildren Hayden, Ashley and Marshall Russ. In addition, there are numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be Sunday, August 18 at
2:30 pm at Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church in Burnsville. Reverend Samuel Wesley Sharpe will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 pm at the church prior to the service. Burial will be in Holcombe Cemetery.

JAKE LUKE BENNETT

Jake Luke Bennett, 87, of Jacks Creek, passed away Friday, August 9, 2013, at Brookside Rehabilitation & Care.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Fulton and Inez Peterson Bennett.  He was also preceded in death by 2 sisters:  June Bennett and Genavieve Johnson Forster.  Jake enjoyed farming and gardening.

 

Surviving are a brother:  Buster Bennett and wife, Wanda, of Spruce Pine;  sisters:  Louise Gardner of Travelers Rest, SC, and Mary Ellen Lane and husband, Jack, of Erwin, TN; a special nephew:  Buddy Bennett and wife, Connie, of Johnson City, TN; 8 nieces:  Rhonda, Pattie, Sue, Renita, Teresa, Judy, Cathy and Brenda; and several great nieces and nephews also survive.

 

A graveside service will be held at 2PM Sunday at Peterson Hill Cemetery on Peterson Branch Road at Green Mountain.

 

The family wishes to thank the staff of Brookside Rehabilitation & Care for their dedicated and compassionate care for Jake.

HERSHEL M. HARRIS

Hershel M. Harris, 79, of Burnsville passed away Friday, August 2, 2013 at Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Milburn and Eliza Guinn Harris.  He was also preceded in death by sisters:  Norma Rathbone, Eva Phillips, Nola Phillips and a brother:  Pender Harris.  He was a Korean Conflict US Army Veteran.  Hershel was a retired employee of Kearfott.

 

Surviving are his wife, Violet Ray Harris, 2 sisters:  Betty Crowder and husband, Ken, of Swannanoa and Lana Wright and husband, Boyce, of Spruce Pine.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3 PM Sunday in Browns Creek Baptist Church, of which he was a member.  Rev. Donald Davis will officiate.  Burial will be in the Cornelius Ray Cemetery. 

 

The family will receive friends l hour prior to the service at the church.

MAITE ADRIANA CHAVEZ-JERONIMO

Maite Adriana Chavez-Jeronimo, 2 year old daughter of Moises Chavez and Maria Jeronimo of Burnsville passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at Mission Hospitals Memorial Campus.

 

A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.  Burial will be in the Academy Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 7:30 Friday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.
