PANSIE HEDRICK HENSLEY

Pansie Hedrick Hensley, 81, of McKinney Road, Burnsville, passed away Tuesday, July 2, 2013.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Bob and Hamey Whitson Hedrick and the wife of  Harrell Hensley, who died in 1977.  She was also preceded in death by brothers:  Ray Hedrick and Glen Hedrick.  Pansie loved her farm, garden and caring for her animals and grandchildren.  She was a member of Byrd Branch Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are her son:  Bobby Hensley; 2 grandchildren:  Jason Hensley and Jennifer Hensley and 2 great-grandchildren:  Hayden and Breona all of Burnsville; a sister:  Mae McKinney of Erwin, TN; 2 sisters-in-law:  Betty Hedrick of Green Mountain and Mildred Styles of Charlotte and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3 PM Friday, July 5, 2013 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Ray Wilson will officiate.  Burial will be in the Cane River Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 PM Friday, prior to the service, at the funeral home.

LEATHA MCINTOSH RIDDLE

Leatha McIntosh Riddle, 97, of Langford Branch, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 28, 2013.  She was the daughter of the late Howard and Fannie Wheeler McIntosh and the wife of the late Francis Riddle.  She was also preceded in death by 3 sons:  Jimmie, Leroy and Bennie Riddle; 2 sisters:  Minnie Pate and Myrtle McIntosh; 4 brothers: Nealy, Wellington, Lincoln and Leslie McIntosh.  Leatha was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend.  She was the oldest member of Elk Shoal Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are 5 daughters:  Shirley Linville and husband, George, of Mechanicsville, VA, Jessie Sowder and husband, Charles, Christine Humphrey and husband, Johnnie, of Baltimore, MD, Thanna Smith and husband, Bobby, of Mocksville, NC, and Judy Smith and husband, Paul, of Axton, VA; a son: Gary Riddle and wife, Janice, of Burnsville; 8 grandchildren: Ed Sowder and wife, Bernadette, Shelia Neff,  Chris Riddle and wife, Melissa, Nick Riddle and wife, Kelly, Chuck Riddle, Lana Guthrie and husband, Roger, Jeremy Riddle and wife, Kim, and Ashley Shortt and husband, Michael; 15 great grandchildren:  Kyle, Grant, Randy Jr., Brianna, Kyrsten, Mykala, Tyler, Hunter, Julianna, Gillian, Hayden, Jaika, Elijah, Addison and Savannah; a sister:  Ruth Ogle of Green Mountain; 2 sisters-in-law: Kittie Laws of Burnsville and Opal Lee of Rocky Mount, NC; a brother-in-law:  James Riddle of Burnsville; 2 daughters-in-law:  Joanne and Maurine Riddle. 

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Tuesday, July 2, 2013 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Stacey Elkins will officiate.  Burial will be in the McIntosh Cemetery on Langford Branch Road.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Monday at the funeral home.

 

Mama always said “Give me my flowers while I’m living.”  The family is requesting donations be made to the John F. Keever Solace Center, 21 Belvedere Road, Asheville, NC 28803.

 

The family wants to thank two very special caregivers, Glenda Ramsey Higgins who went above and beyond and cousin, Pearl McIntosh.

MAX KENNETH HUGHES

Max Kenneth Hughes, 84, of Hardscrabble Road, Burnsville, passed away Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was the son of the late Fonze and Frances Bailey Hughes, and the husband of Louise Proffitt Hughes for 64 years, who died April 2013.  He was also preceded in death by sisters: Helen Wilson, Ruth Thomas, Shirley Rhyne and Margaret Azel and brothers: Ralph and Leroy Hughes.  Max was a retired employee of the NC Department of Transportation with 30 years service, a member, Elder, Sunday School Superintendent and Clerk of Session of Micaville Presbyterian Church for over 55 years, and a Boy Scout Leader and Youth Softball Coach for a number of years.  Max was an avid sports fan, especially Atlanta Braves Baseball and Duke Blue Devils Basketball.  He was a graduate of Nashville Auto-Diesel College.

 

Surviving are 2 sons:  Ken Hughes and wife, Jane, of Asheville and Gary Hughes and wife, Lisa, of Weaverville; beloved granddaughters:  Leslie and Lauren; three sisters: Kathryn Moore of Stanley, NC, Mildred Robinson of Burnsville and Martha Burleson of Spruce Pine; five brothers:  Jack, Charles, Mike and Rodney Hughes of Burnsville, and Larry Hughes of Brevard; and, several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3 PM Wednesday June 26, 2013 in Micaville Presbyterian Church.  Revs. Pete Peterson and Robert Garrison will officiate.  Burial will be in Proffitt Cemetery on Hardscrabble Road.

 

The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3PM Wednesday, prior to the service, at the church.

LUCY MILLER WHEELER

Lucy Miller Wheeler, 94, of the Higgins community, went to her Heavenly Home on June 13, 2013.  She was the daughter of the late Reverend Quince Miller and Birdie Woodby Miller.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Tom, who died in 1986, a son, James, who died in 2003; 2 granddaughters, Tammy and Amy Wheeler; 2 sisters, Sudia Williams and Ollie Mosley; and 3 brothers, Arson, Cal and George Miller.

 

She is survived by her daughters and caregiver, Elizabeth Allen and husband, Edd, of Fletcher, and Grace Hensley and husband, Dennia, of Burnsville; daughter-in-law, Gayle Wheeler of Kernersville; sisters, Hattie Bradford of Burnsville, Ann Barrett and Harley Miller of Greenville, TN; brother, I.J. Miller of Midway, TN; 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a very special and dear friend, Debbie Cannon.

 

Lucy was well known for her beautiful quilts and ability to grow roses.  She was a member of Bald Mountain Freewill Baptist Church.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Sunday, June 16, 2013 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Reverend Burl Ledford will officiate.  Burial will be at Higgins Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 1 until 2:30 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.  At other times, the family will be at Mrs. Wheeler’s home on Highway 19W in Burnsville.

 

The family would like to thank the staff at Fletcher View Inn for the care she received while she was there.

JUNIOR G. KING

Junior G. King, 82, of Asheville passed away Wednesday, June 12 2013, at The John F. Keever Solace Center.  A native of Yancey County, he was the son of the late Liddia King Silvers.  He was also preceded in death by a brother, Nealy Silvers and sisters:  Ruth Spivey and Bertha Harwood.  Junior was the former owner/operator of White Pine EXXON.

 

Surviving are his brother, Lloyd Silvers of Burnsville; 5 sisters:  Ruby Harbour of Eden, Shirley Dockery of Fletcher, Helen Robinson and Lola Radford of Burnsville and Billie Laws of Asheville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Saturday, June 15, 2013, in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. David Garland will officiate.  Burial will be in the King Cemetery at Elk Shoal Creek.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

VERNON TIMOTHY TABOR

Vernon Timothy Tabor, 69, of Burnsville, passed away Friday, June 7, 2013 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care in Burnsville. A native of Indiana, he was the son of the late Mann and Annette Hutchinson Tabor. Vernon was an iron worker in the construction field.

 

Surviving are a son Tim Tabor and his wife Donna of Burnsville, a sister Jackie O'Hern of Valparaiso, Indiana; 6 grandchildren, Caleb, Hillary, J.P., Allie, Braeden and Carter and a great grandchild Marley

No services are planned.  Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of Mitchell County, 236 Hospital Drive, Spruce Pine, NC 28777.

CARL SCOTT

Carl Scott, 96, of Plum Branch, went to be with the Lord, Monday, June 3, 2013 at Brian Center Health and Rehab in Spruce Pine.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Jim and Cindy Ledford Scott and husband of Mary Will Ledford Scott who died in 2009.  Carl was a dairyman and retired employee of Woodcrafters.  He was a member of Plum Branch Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are a daughter, Kathy Penland and husband, Harold; and a son, Leland Scott and wife, Anna, all of Burnsville; 5 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7 PM Thursday, June 6, 2013 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Billy Mitchell will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 10 AM Friday in the Scott Cemetery on Prices Creek.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

GERALD W. SMITH

Gerald W. Smith, 82, of South Toe, died June 1, 2013 at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital.  Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late William and Mary Duffy Smith.  Gerald was a retired educator.  He had been a resident of Yancey County since 1988.

 

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Eda B. Smith; and son, Colin K. Smith of Clarkston, GA.

 

A memorial service will be held at 2 PM Saturday, June 22, 2013, at Celo Friends Quaker Meeting.

FRANK BAILEY McFADDEN

Frank Bailey McFadden, 91, of Burnsville, passed away Monday, May 27, 2013, at Spruce Pine Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation.  A native of Rutherford County, he was a son of the late J. C. and Pansy Bailey McFadden.  He was also preceded in death by brothers:  George and J. C. McFadden, Jr.; and, sister:  Estelle Hudson.  He was a World War II US Army Veteran.  Frank was active in the Burnsville Lions Club, Hospice of Yancey County, Burnsville Town Council, Habitat and the American Legion.

 

Surviving are his wife of 64 years:  Doris Mayse McFadden; a sister:  Virginia McDougall of Payson, AZ; and, many nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11AM Saturday in the First Baptist Church of Burnsvile, of which he was a member and Deacon.  Rev. Tommy James will officiate.  The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church in Burnsville.

 

graveside service will be held at 2:30 PM Saturday in Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery, 2676 Hudlow Road, Forest City, NC 28043.

CLYDE D. YOUNG, JR.

Clyde D. Young, Jr., “Pop”, 87, of Plumtree, formerly of the Newdale Community, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, May 26, 2013 at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Clyde D. Young, Sr., and Ola Mae Ray Young and the husband of Eleanora Woody Young who died in 2010.   He was also preceded in death by sisters:  Evelyn Young and Kathleen McCollum; and a brother:  Joe Young.  He was a graduate of Micaville High School, a World War II Navy Veteran and retired from Belk-Broome in Spruce Pine after 38 years service.  After retirement, he worked with the U. S. Park Service and was at the ribbon cutting for the opening of the Linn Cove Viaduct.  Clyde was a Charter Member of the Yancey County Camp of the Gideons International.

 

Surviving are his daughter:  Cheryl Lynn Buchanan and husband, Buck, of Plumtree; a brother:  Rev. Thomas Young and wife, Zeta, of Nitro, W. VA; a sister-in-law:  Shirley Young of Melborne, Fl.; grandbaby pets:  BoBo and Precious; niece:  Miriam Gillespie and husband, Billy, and their sons: Noah, Eli and Micah of Huntington, W. VA; nephews:  David Young of Columbus, Ohio; John Young and wife, Char, of Charleston, W. VA; Greg, Jeff and Nicki Panasuk and wife, Mary, of Melborne; Cheryl’s brother:  Chuck Cabe and wife, Pam, and their daughter, Jessica; step daughter:  Susan Hollifield; special care giver and 'buddy’:  Angela Buchanan of Spruce Pine and several special cousins.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7 P. M. Thursday, May 30, 2013 in Newdale Presbyterian Church, of which he was a member and Elder.  Revs. Jim Taylor, Bobby Justus and Joe Bennett will officiate.  Private family burial will be in the Church Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Russell Saxon, Floyd Holcombe, Jon Young, Larry and Michael Fortner and Donnie Buchanan.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
