KANE BALL

Kane Ball, 86, of the Jacks Creek community passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2013 in Brookside Rehabilitation & Care.  A native of Japan, she was the wife of the late Clarence Ball.

 

Surviving are her caregiver, Lynda Edwards and family of Burnsville.

 

Private graveside services will be held at a later date in West Burnsville Cemetery.

 

The family would like to thank Hospice of Yancey County and Brookside Rehabilitation and Care for the care given Kane.

CLAY FOX

Clay Fox, 74, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, April 23, 2013.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Arthur and Hattie Mae Laws Fox.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Arrowood Fox; brothers:  Ross, Homer, and Clyde; sisters:  Jackie, Lois, Thelma, Hazel and Jean.  Clay was a former employee of the Town of Burnsville and a farmer.

 

Surviving are his children:  Tim Fox and wife, Rhonda, of Spruce Pine, Lisa Phillips of Bakersville and Clay Fox, Jr., and wife, Joe Anna, of Burnsville; 2 grandchildren:  Tucker Jones and Jennifer Fox; 2 step grandchildren:  Travis and Jonathan Walker; and a brother:  Albert Fox and wife, Becky, of Weaverville.

 

A memorial service will be held at 6:00 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Ricky  Woody will officiate.  Burial will be in the Holcombe Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

STANLEY SILVERS

Stanley Silvers, 68, of Swannanoa, went home Thursday, April 18, 2013.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Isaac and Ruby Fender Silvers.  Stanley was a sheetrock finisher in the Asheville area.

 

Surviving are his wife of 50 years:  Jerlean Freeman Silvers; daughter:  Debbie Silvers Taylor and husband, Tim, of Swannanoa; a grandson:  Ryan Taylor; a granddaughter:  Jessica Taylor; a sister:  Grace Silver and husband, Claude; a brother:  Ross Silvers and wife, Shelby, of Burnsville; and, 2 nieces.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. David Dimsdale will officiate.  Burial will be in the Red Hill Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3PM Sunday prior to the service at the funeral home.

EDGAR "BUD" SHELTON

Edgar “Bud” Shelton, 72, of Burnsville, went to rest Sunday, April 14, 2013 at the Blue Ridge Regional Hospital.  A native of Madison County, he was a son of the late William and Carrie Hensley Shelton.  He was also preceded in death by a sister:  Alice Shelton.  He was a US Army Vietnam Veteran.  Bud worked in the forestry industry for 31 years having retired with Parker Forest Products.  He was an outdoorsman who loved nature and fishing.

 

Surviving are a son: David Shelton and daughter-in-law: Asheley Hughes; a grandson:  Aiedunn James Shelton and lifelong friend, Mary Moore all of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Perry Norton will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 10 AM Wednesday in the Burton Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

David wishes to give special thanks to Bud’s lifelong friend, Mary, for all the care and support given him through his journey.

MARTHA FAYE SILVER LEIKUS SERAN

Martha Faye Silver Leikus Seran, 84, of Burnsville, was carried home by the Angels Wednesday, April 10, 2013.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Elzie and Savannah Smith Silver.  She was preceded in death by her husbands, Peter Leikus, a WWII Army Veteran, who died in 1973, and Samuel Seran, a WWII Navy Veteran and former Manager of the Army Store, who died in 2008.  She was also preceded in death by 3 brothers:  Roy, Herman and Earl Silver.  Faye was a member of Crabtree Baptist Church, a master of Southern cuisine and was the glue that held her family together.

 

Surviving are a sister:  Virginia Styles and husband, Murry; a brother:  Claude Silver and wife, Grace, of Burnsville; 4 children:  Lisa Leikus of Louisville, KY, Michael Seran of Pennsville, NJ, Greg Leikus of Green Castle, PA and Wendy Ewing of Soloman, KS; 11 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Jean Laws.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. William Wilson will officiate.  Burial will be in the Crabtree Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends 2 hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

LOUISE PROFFITT HUGHES

Louise Proffitt Hughes, 86, of Hardscrabble Road, Burnsville, passed away Thursday, April 4, 2013, at Memorial Campus of Mission Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Leslie and Vina Hill Proffitt.  She was also preceded in death by a brother:  Wayne Proffitt.  A graduate of Berea College, Louise taught in the Yancey County School System for 38 years.  She was a member and past president of Delta Kappa Gamma, teacher of the year in 1974, homemaker of the year in Yancey County in 1983, a member of Micaville Presbyterian Church, and an honorary life member of Presbyterian women.  Louise taught adult Sunday School class for over 62 years.  She enjoyed sewing, making yeast rolls and spending time with her family.

 

Surviving are her husband of 64 years:  Max Hughes; 2 sons:  Ken Hughes and fiancée, Jane, of Asheville and Gary Hughes and wife, Lisa, of Weaverville; beloved granddaughters:  Leslie and Lauren; brother:  Eddie Proffitt and wife, Linda, of Burnsville; and, several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3PM Monday in Micaville Presbyterian Church.  Rev. Pete Peterson will officiate.  Burial will be in Proffitt Cemetery at Hardscrabble.

 

The family will receive friends from 1 until 3PM at the church.

ORLENA JAMERSON ANGLIN

Orlena Jamerson Anglin passed away, Monday, April 1, 2013.  She was the daughter of the late Reverend Dewey J. and Vivian Blankenship Jamerson and the wife of Woodrow M. Anglin, for 36 years, who passed away in 2005.  She was also preceded in death by a brother, Albert Dewey Jamerson; and two sisters:  Jessie Louise Jamerson and Margaret Naomi Jamerson of Pensacola.  She attended Mars Hill Junior College and received her degree in Music from Meredith College.  She taught for 34 years in the school system of Yancey County.  She was organist and music director for over 40 years in various churches.  She was a faithful member of Bolens Creek Baptist Church where she served as music director for nineteen years. 

 

Orlena is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law:  Sharon and Stephen Edge of Charlotte and Cynthia and Lenoir Moore of Asheville; a son and daughter-in-law:  Glenn and Debra Williams of Baltimore, Maryland; grandchildren and spouses:  Shannon and Greg Russ of Winston-Salem, Allison Edge of Brooklyn, New York  and Spencer Edge of New York City, Carrie Jones of Pennsylvania, Jessica Suarez of Virginia, Gary and Diana Fay Williams, Janet and Mike McCormick, and Alexa Williams of Maryland; great-grandchildren:  Hayden, Ashley and Marshall Russ of Winston-Salem, Carter Thompson of Pennsylvania, Isabella Suarez of Virginia, Camden McCormick and Hailey Williams of Maryland; a brother-in-law:  Clyde Anglin of Asheville and several nieces and nephews, as well as, special friends and caregivers, Deborah Parker and Marlene Verran of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Saturday, April 6, 2013 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Dr. Chris Morgan, Rev. Vernon Buchanan and special friend, Niles Howell will officiate.  Burial will be in the Anglin-Evans Cemetery on Sheriff Anglin Road in the Jacks Creek Community.  Pallbearers will be:  Spencer Edge, Gary Williams, Greg Russ, Jim Evans, Ben Riddle, John Anglin and Suel Anglin.

 

The family will receive friends from 11:30 AM until 1 PM Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home.

RAYMOND L. WILSON

Raymond L. Wilson, 62, formerly of the Busick community of Yancey County went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, March 30, 2013.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late A. A. and Della Banks Wilson.  Raymond loved Christ, his family, his work at McDonalds, the Tar Heels, Panthers and NFL, especially Packers and Patriots, Hendersonville Car Club, Old Gospel, 60’s and Country music.

 

Surviving are a sister:  Sarah Bartlett (T.M.) of Marion; 3 brothers:  Dean Wilson (Betty) of Charlotte, Coy Wilson (Barbara) of Marion and Dennis Wilson (Linda) of Burnsville; a half-brother:  Bill Wilson of Rowan County; special friend and caretaker:  Michael Hart of Asheville and many nieces and nephews.

 

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

VERA ALDINE BANKS WILSON JOHNSON

Vera Aldine Banks Wilson Johnson, 82, passed away Sunday, March 31, 2013.  A native of Yancey County,  she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Agnes Blankenship Banks.  She was also preceded in death by sisters:  Evelyn McPeters, Ida Angel and Madge Fagan; brothers:  Willie Crate, Rolin, Hobert, Edwin, Vernon and Bruce; and husbands:  B. M. Wilson and Eugene Johnson, Sr.

 

Surviving are 4 children:  Linda Wilson Phillips (Lewis) and Dianne Wilson Melton, both of Newport News, VA; Michael Garrett Wilson (Andrea) of Fredericksburg, VA and Timothy Lynn Wilson (Sharon) of Bedford; sisters:  Carolyn Stern of Lax Vegas, NV, June Everhart of Asheville and Anna Lee Higgins of Rutherfordton; a brother:  Benjamin Banks of Concord; 10 grandchildren; and, 4 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Anthony Fox will officiate.  Burial will be in the Marietta Atkins Cemetery.

BONNIE NORRIS

Bonnie Norris, 69, of the Cattail Community of Yancey County, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, February 20, 2013.  A native of Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Tom and Mae Barry Hinton and the wife of Dr. Michael Norris who died in 2011.   She and her husband had been part-time residents of the Cattail Community for more than 15 years and full time residents for the past four years.  Bonnie attended Pensacola United Methodist Church.

 

Surviving are sons:  Brian Mitchell of Franklin, TN, Stephen Mitchell of New York City, NY and Paul Norris of Allen, TX; a daughter: Heather Bowman of Burnsville;  a step daughter: Jennifer Harrison of Taylor, Michigan; a sister: Suzanne Kahn of Mineral Bluff, GA; a brother: Tom Hinton of Estero, Florida;  six grandchildren: Campbell Mitchell, Liam Couper, Emerson Mitchell, Gillian Norris, Camden Norris and Hailey Harrison; and a step granddaughter: Haiden Bowman.

 

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, April 8, 2013 at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.  Rev. A. J. Moore will officiate.
