BONNIE NORRIS

Bonnie Norris, 69, of the Cattail Community of Yancey County, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, February 20, 2013.  A native of Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Tom and Mae Barry Hinton and the wife of Dr. Michael Norris who died in 2011.   She and her husband had been part-time residents of the Cattail Community for more than 15 years and full time residents for the past four years.  Bonnie attended Pensacola United Methodist Church.

 

Surviving are sons:  Brian Mitchell of Franklin, TN, Stephen Mitchell of New York City, NY and Paul Norris of Allen, TX; a daughter: Heather Bowman of Burnsville;  a step daughter: Jennifer Harrison of Taylor, Michigan; a sister: Suzanne Kahn of Mineral Bluff, GA; a brother: Tom Hinton of Estero, Florida;  six grandchildren: Campbell Mitchell, Liam Couper, Emerson Mitchell, Gillian Norris, Camden Norris and Hailey Harrison; and a step granddaughter: Haiden Bowman.

 

A memorial service will be held at a later date at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.

HOWARD WILLIAM NELSON

Howard William Nelson, 90 of  Plum Branch, went  home to be with  his Lord and Savior, Friday, February 15, 2013.  A native of Yancey County, he was the son of the late Rathey Stevens Nelson and Deloras Boone Nelson.  He was also preceded in death by his wife: Virginia Carroll Nelson, who died on May 15, 2007; a sister:  Ruth Hensley; and a brother:  Lloyd Stevens.

 

Howard was a World War II Army veteran, part of the greatest generation, serving as a Corporal with Battery “C” 202 nd. AAA AW BN in the Philippines.

 

He was a life member of Burnsville Lodge # 717 AF & AM, serving twice as Master and was a Certified Lecturer, and a former District Deputy Lecturer. Howard was an honorary member of the Bald Creek Lodge # 397 AF & AM

 

Howard was a member of Plum Branch Baptist Church, where he had served as Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, and Deacon. He was a retired employee of Parker Bros. Hosiery Mill of Old Fort, where he worked as a fixer. He loved his family and friends and will be missed so very much.

 

Surviving are a daughter:  Carolyn Foxx and husband, Dennis, of Burnsville, a son: Rev. Kenneth Nelson and wife, Cathy, of Jonesville, NC; two grandsons: Tim Foxx and wife, Jennifer, and Josh Nelson and wife, Valerie; a great grandson: Jackson Foxx; a great granddaughter: Madison Nelson; and a nephew: Donald Hensley and wife, Jearline, all of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. David Gillespie will officiate. Masonic Graverites will be conducted by Burnsville Lodge #717 AF & AM in the Boone Cemetery on Plum Branch.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Monday at the funeral home, and at other times will be at the home of Carolyn Foxx.

SYLVIA EVANS

Sylvia Evans, 80, of Georges Fork went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine.  A native of Yancey County, she was the daughter of the late Elzie and Pansy McDowell Fox.  She was also preceded in death by a brother, Larry James Fox.  Sylvia attended Victory Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are her husband of 61 years, Frank D. Evans; a daughter, Sheila Kardulis and husband, Paul; son, Mack D. Evans and wife, Miranda; 2 grandsons:  Matthew and Nathan Kardulis; a brother, Ted Fox and wife, Edna Earle, and a nephew, Todd Fox all of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Scot Garland will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Saturday in the Honeycutt Cemetery on Georges Fork.

 

The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7 PM Friday prior to the service at the funeral home.

JACOB ANDREW ROBINSON

Jacob Andrew Robinson, 36, of Greenville, SC went to be with his Heavenly Father Monday, February 11, 2013.  He was the loving son of Patricia Smith Robinson of Greer and the late Larry Robinson; the brother of Matthew Robinson and wife Martha of Bentonville, Arkansas, uncle to Parker, Ian and Emilia Robinson.  Also surviving are his maternal grandmother Mary Jo Brown Smith of Greenville and paternal grandfather Euranious Robinson and wife Willa Dean of Burnsville; aunts Jennifer Steele and husband Carlyle and daughter Mary Kennington of Greenville; Kay and Janice Robinson and Debbie Wilson all of Burnsville, and uncle; Tommy Robinson of Little Washington, NC.

 

A memorial service will be held at 1 PM Saturday, February 16, 2013 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Burial will be in the George Brown Family Cemetery in Burnsville.  The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service.

 

Jacob was Vice President of the Republican Palmetto Precinct in Greenville.  He was a kind soul who helped many neighbors in their time of need and cared for his mother during her several cancer surgeries from 2005 through 2013.  He graduated from Riverside High School and attended Greenville Tech in Greenville and worked for Star Textile Equipment as an Associate Representative.

 

Memorials may be made in honor of Jacob to the Institute of Translational Oncology Research, 300 East McBee Avenue, Suite 200, Greer, SC 29601.

TOM HIGGINS

Tom Higgins, 56, of Burnsville, passed away Sunday, February 10, 2013, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Quinton and Lala Miller Higgins.  He was also preceded in death by a brother:  Tim Higgins.

 

Surviving are a sister:  Veronica Willis and husband, Ronnie, of Green Mountain; and, a niece:  Amanda Edwards of Burnsville.

 

A memorial service will be held at 6PM Sunday, February 17, 2013, in Big Creek Free Will Baptist Church.  Rev. Marvin Hensley will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

LESLIE E. "LES" WHEELER

Leslie E. “Les” Wheeler, 90, of Higgins, passed away Sunday, February 10, 2013, at Mission Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Jim and Lynda Hilemon Wheeler.  He was preceded in death by a son;   Jimmy Lane Wheeler; 4 brothers:  George, Tom, Sam and C. B. Wheeler; and, 4 sisters:  Bessie Adkins, Nell Hensley, Pansy Robinson and Madge Randolph.  He was a World War II Army Veteran.

 

Surviving are his wife:  Dorothy Robinson Wheeler; and, several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Roscoe Briggs, Jr. and J. W. Mann will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 10 AM Thursday in the Cane River Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 PM Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home.

JEANETTE COOPER LAWS

Jeanette Cooper Laws, 71, of Green Mountain, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, February 8, 2013, at her home, surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer.   A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Roy and Birdie Whitson Cooper.  She was preceded in death by a daughter:  Donna Parker, who died Dec. 18 2012; brothers:   Jack, R.J. and Ott Cooper; sisters:  Anna and Helen.  She was a member of Toe River Freewill Baptist Church.   Jeanette enjoyed spending time outdoors and with her grandchildren.

 

Surviving are her husband of 55 years:   Paul Laws; a daughter:   Linda Biddix and husband, Steve; a son:   Mark Laws and wife, Angie, all of Green Mountain; 4 grandchildren:   Brandie, Britney, Sydney and Kylie; 4 great grandchildren:   Kolbey, Jacob, Lucas and Gracie; 2 sisters:  Beatrice Howington of Bristol, TN and Sue Ray of Burnsville; and, 3 brothers:  Jim and Dick Cooper and Gary Crosby, all of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Bernie Jones will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Tuesday in the Laws Cemetery at Green Mountain.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Monday prior to the service at the funeral home.

Minnie Jane Wilson

Minnie Jane Willis Wilson, 84, of Scronce Creek, passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2013.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Hiram and Bertie Bradford Willis.  She was the wife of Wayne Wilson who died in 1997.  She was also preceded in death by a son: Jimmy Lee Wilson; grandson: Roger Wayne Carroll; granddaughter: Tonya Diane Wilson; son-in-law: Herman John Carroll; sister:  Reba Ward and a brother:  Johnny Willis.  She had retired with the US Forest Service.  Minnie Jane had made baskets since she was 3 years old.

 

Surviving are a daughter:  Gail Carroll of Burnsville; a son:  David Wayne Wilson and Dianna of Burnsville; 10 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 9 great-great grandchildren; 4 sisters:  Dessie Wilson, Lydia Tipton, Linda Miller and Mildred Renfro and a brother:  Ronnie Willis all of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Saturday in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church of which she was a life-long member.  Rev. Jerry Shelton will officiate.  Burial will be in the Ferguson Cemetery on Scronce Creek.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Friday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home where the body will remain until taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.

JAMES WALTER WILSON

Walter Wilson 94, of the Horton Creek community, passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2013, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was the son of the late Nelson and Lula Chrisawn Wilson.  He was a World War II US Navy veteran.  Walter was preceded in death by his wife:  Stella; and, 2 brothers and 6 sisters.

 

Surviving is a niece:  Louise Ramsey, of Burnsville, with whom he resided, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Burl Ledford and Scot Garland will officiate.  Burial will be in the Wilson Cemetery on Indian Creek.  Sgt. E. L. Randolph Chapter 57, DAV will confer military rites.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

PHILLIP GARDNER

Phillip Gardner, 81, of Celo, passed away Monday, February 4, 2013 in the McDowell Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Floyd and Mary Autrey Gardner.  He was also preceded in death by 5 sisters:  Thelma Murphy, Ruth Flemmings, Julie Blevins, Louise Branch and Dorothy Mace and 2 brothers:  Lewis Gardner and Paul Gardner.  Phillip had attended Nebo First Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are his sister, Pauline Norman and her husband, Charles, of Nebo and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Doug Worley will officiate.  Burial will be in the Bowditch Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
