BILLY BROOKS (SONNY) WILSON

Billy Brooks (Sonny) Wilson, 84, of Pensacola, passed away peacefully, at his home, Thursday, December 27, 2012.  A native of Yancey County, he was the son of the late Pem Brook and Ruth Riddle Wilson and third generation owner of B B Wilson Grocery.

 

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Katie Penland Wilson; and two daughters; Linda Griffith and husband David and Claudette Childs and husband Don, all of Pensacola. Three grandchildren: Michael Griffith, Jonathan Griffith and Cynthia Brown and six great grandchildren: Christian and Jordan Whitson, Brandon and Tyler Brown and Emily and Katie Griffith also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11 A. M. Saturday in Laurel Branch Baptist Church, of which he was a member.  Rev. Ray Strickland will officiate.  Burial will be in the Riddle Family Cemetery on Pine Cone Lane.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the fellowship hall at the church.  At other times they will be at his home.

EVA WALLACE

Eva Wallace, 77, of Boone Branch, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, December 27, 2012, at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Forrest and Carsie Boone Thomas.  She was a member of Crabtree Baptist Church.  After retirement Eva enjoyed volunteering at the local nursing home.  She was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.

 

Surviving are her husband of 59 years:  Ernest Wallace; 2 daughters:  Patricia Boone and husband, Ken, and Tiny Fender and husband, Larry, all of Burnsville; a sister:  Judy Hise and husband Billy Ray (Heavy) of Spruce Pine; 4 grandchildren:  Forrest, Angie, Misty and Lisa; 9 great grandchildren:  Courtney, Jordan, Drew, Julie, Chloe, Josh, Tobey, Ethan and Damon; and, several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Dale Banks will officiate.  Burial will be in the Crabtree Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

The family wishes to give a special thanks to Jana and Letty and staff at Hospice of Yancey County, and to Kelly and Pam and the staff of Yancey County Home Health.

IDA LYNN KISNER SHELL

Ida Lynn "Luckie" Kisner Shell, 42 of Burnsville, passed away Tuesday December 25, 2012 after a period of declining health.  A native of Baltimore, MD, she was a daughter of the late Edward Ross Kisner and Ida Poole Hetzel of Burnsville.  She was also preceded in death by 2 brothers:  Michael York Kisner and Harvey Nick Kisner.

 

Surviving in addition to her mother is a brother:  Robert Wayne Poole of Burnsville; 4 children:  George Allen Shell Jr., William Drew Shell, Sherry Lynn Kellaner, and Crystal Ann Shell; a granddaughter: Kassies Marie Shell; and nieces and nephews also survive. 

 

A memorial service will be held at 3 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Ricky Ray will officiate.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

Memorials may be made to the Charity of one’s choice.

           

MARVIN DALE HONEYCUTT

Marvin Dale Honeycutt, 39, of 68 Azalea Lane, Burnsville went to be with the Lord Thursday, December 20, 2012.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of Rita Whitson Honeycutt of Burnsville and the late Miller Honeycutt.

 

Surviving, in addition to his mother, is a sister:  Nancy Honeycutt Davis of Morganton; and a brother:  Raymond Honeycutt of Falls Church, Virginia.  Marvin was also known as “Papaw” to Cadence and Riley Parker.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Dwight Boone, Jr. and Haskie Junior Honeycutt will officiate.  Burial will be in the Academy Hill Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

JAMES LEE GEOUGE

On Tuesday, December 18, 2012, Mr. James Lee Geouge, 90, died at The Laurels of Summit Ridge in Oteen after several years of declining health.  Born February 4, 1922, Mr. Geouge was the youngest son of the late W. Roscoe and Mary Wilson Geouge.  He was also preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Pauline Gilley Geouge; brother, Paul Geouge; and sisters:  Ruth Bell, Hazel Grindstaff, Allie Thomas and Pearl Wilson.

 

Mr. Geouge served as a Technical Sgt. in the U.S. Army and was a prisoner of war during World War II.  He received numerous Service medals, including a Purple Heart and was an expert marksman.  He rarely spoke of his tour of duty, but credited his survival to the American Red Cross following his capture and POW internment. 

 

After returning home from combat, he earned his diploma from Micaville High School and spent the majority of his professional career building bridges throughout Western N.C. and Eastern Tennessee.  He completed several projects on the Blue Ridge Parkway, as did his father and his son.  Mr. Geouge retired from Blalock & Sons in 1989.

 

He spent much free time along the parkway, on high mountain ridges exploring waterfalls and along numerous small streams where he often fished.  He loved to spend time outdoors and often spent weekends camping under the stars near Harmon Den in the Nantahala National Forest.  Every summer, he shared a bountiful vegetable garden with friends and family.

 

Mr. Geouge is survived by his children:  Randall Geouge (Juanita) of Burnsville, Rebecca Gosnell (Bill) of Knoxville, TN, and Susan Rankin (Jed) of Marion; grandchildren:  Mark Geouge, Mandy Geouge Ward, Mary Gosnell, Kasey Rankin and Jake Rankin; great-grandchildren:  Zachary Gosnell, Grayson Ward and Hunter Geouge.  He is also survived by two sisters:  Betty Black and Helen Crisp (Jesse); an aunt:  Tassie Wilson Bradley; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at Noon, Saturday, December 22, 2012 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Burial will be in the Blue Rock Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. 

 

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests the following for memorials:  the American Red Cross, Alzheimer’s Foundation or Blue Rock Baptist Church.  The family also wishes to thank the wonderful staff at The Laurels of Summit Ridge, Care Partner’s Hospice and the Charles George VA Medical Center for their excellent support and care.

GEORGE WOODBY

George Woodby, 87, of Byrd Branch, passed away Monday, December 17, 2012, at St Josephs Hospital in Asheville.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late James Marion and Alice King Woodby and the husband of Edith Bryant Woodby who died September 11, 2012.  George was a retired farmer

 

Surviving are; 2 daughters:  Wanda Woodby of Green Mountain and Elizabeth Caudill and husband, Allen, of Burnsville; 2 sons:  Fred Woodby and wife, Donna, and Ted Woodby all of Burnsville; 8 grandchildren:  Jennifer Kerley, Denise Baker, Deirdre Caudill, Phillip Caudill, Jeffrey Adam Caudill, Abbie Davis, Amber Woodby and Andrew George Woodby; 4 great grandchildren:  Alex, Emily, Jordan and Gabriel; 2 sisters:  Mary Kampf of Hendersonville and Maude Bradford of Burnsville; and, 2 brothers:  Claude and Bill Woodby of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Revs. Frank Cable and Dale Laws will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday Woodby Family Cemetery on Byrd Branch. 

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

DOYLE BRANTON

Doyle Edward Branton, 75, of Hamilton, Ohio went home to Heaven on Sunday, December 16, 2012.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Mack and Paulette Hughes Branton.  He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Sheila and brothers:  Jim and Paul Branton.  Doyle was a US Army Veteran and employed as an assembler at Mosler Safe Company.  He was a member of Victory Pentecostal Tabernacle.

 

He is survived by his wife, Gloria Branton; son, Michael Branton; daughter, Rhonda Webb; grandchildren Miranda (Ryan) Gabbard, Haley and Brianna Webb, Ashley, Alyssa, and Anthony Branton, Simeon Chandler; great-grandchildren Ethan and Isabella Gabbard, Lyric and Dominic Branton, and Rylee Chandler; a special niece, Karenetta (Gary) Grubb; brothers Wayne (Norma) Branton and Dean (Kay) Branton; sister Emogene (Gale) Silver; and a host of other loving family members and friends.

 

Funeral services will be held at the Victory Pentecostal Tabernacle, in Hamilton on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Donald Pierce officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. ALVIN McCURRY

Alvin McCurry, 90, of Lickskillet, passed away Saturday, December 15, 2012 at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Wash and Barbara Hensley McCurry.  He was also preceded in death by 16 brothers and sisters.  He attended Bald Mountain Church.

 

Surviving are his wife of 71 years, Dorothy Hensley McCurry; 3 daughters:  Mary Elizabeth Blankenship and husband, Roy, Nancy Carolyn Wilson and husband, Reed, and Frieda Robinson; 3 sons:  Junior McCurry and Peggy, Jerry McCurry and Darlene, and Stuart McCurry and Regina, all of Burnsville; 8 grandchildren:  Tammy Shepherd, Stephanie Stroupe, Jennifer Wyatt, Heather Hall, Jeremy Robinson, Christopher McCurry, Shawn McCurry and Jerri Lynn McCurry; 7 great grandchildren:  Sarah and Jessica Hall, Chase Wyatt, KayLynn Robinson, Lauren Robinson, Jeremy Wayne Robinson and Austin Stroupe.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Junior Briggs, Dayton Lewis, Ray Lane and Jerry Shelton will officiate.  Burial will be in the Academy Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one prior to the service at the funeral home.

RUTH PEAKE

Ruth Banks Peake, 82, of Burnsville, passed into the presence of the Lord, Friday, December 14, 2012 at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was the youngest of 11 children of the late Plato and Mary Young Banks.   She was the wife of William Derrick Peake who died in 1995.  She was also preceded in death by siblings:  Esby, Grace, Clara, Wesley, Helen, Nell and Mary Martha.

 

After marrying and raising her family in Northern Virginia, she returned to her beloved mountains after the death of her husband.  Ruth became an active member in the community and in her church, Micaville Presbyterian.

 

She is survived by 4 children:  Derrick Peake and wife, Mary Ann, of Pelion, SC, Judith Marcella and husband, Paul, of Middletown, CT, Martha Peake of Astana, Kazakhstan and David Peake of Brightwood, VA;   six grandchildren: 5 great grandchildren and 3 more expected; two sisters: Frances Taylor and Margaret Griffith of Burnsville; and a brother, Drate Banks of Fairfax, VA.

 

Burial will be at 10 A.M. Wednesday in the Banks Cemetery on Bolens Creek.

 

A memorial service will be held at 11 A.M. Wednesday in the Micaville Presbyterian Church.  The family will receive friends following the service at the church.   Rev. Pete Peterson will officiate.

ALEJANDRO CAMPOS ROMERO

Alejandro Campos Romero, 31, of Green Mountain, passed away Thursday, December 13, 2012.  A native of Mexico, he was a son of Isidro Campos and Juana Romero.  Other survivors include his wife, Rosario Sanchez; a son; brothers and sisters and numerous other relatives.

 

A wake will be held at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home Monday, December 17, 2012 from 5 until 7 P.M. followed by mass at 7 P.M.  Father Fred Werth will officiate.

 

His body will be returned to Cheran Mexico for burial.
