DAVID BRUCE BANKS

David Bruce Banks, 78, of Phipps Creek, passed away Friday, November 9, 2012 at Mission Hospital in Asheville.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Charlie and Agnes Blankenship Banks.  He was also preceded in death by sisters: Evelyn McPeters, Ida Angel and Madge Fagan and brothers: Willie Crate, Rolin, Hobert, Vernon and Edwin Banks.  He was a US Army Veteran, serving in Germany, and a retired employee of BASF. 

 

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Betty Jo Edwards Banks; four sisters: Carolyn Stern of Las Vegas, NV, Aldine Johnson of Virginia Beach, VA, June Everhart of Asheville and Anne Higgins of Rutherfordton and a brother Benjamine Banks of Concord.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 P. M. Friday, November 16, 2012 in Cane River Baptist Church, where he attended for 49 years.  The Revs. Shane Cassida and Dennis Thurman will officiate.  Burial will be in the Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

REV. RICHARD BRYANT

Rev. Richard Bryant, 77, of Jacks Creek went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, November 7, 2012.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Wilce and Dicey Adkins Bryant and the husband of Mandlyn Phillips Bryant who died in 1990.    He was also preceded in death by sisters:  Aletha Hensley and Connie Bryant; and brothers:  Howard and Rotha Bryant and two infant brothers.  Rev. Bryant was a member of the Jacks Creek Freewill Baptist Minister’s Association since 1984.  He pastored Pilgrims Chapel for many years.  As a visiting minister, he served various churches in Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee.  Richard worked at Henredon Furniture Industries for 28½ years.  While there, he organized a program to distribute free Bibles to Russia.  He also was a leader in a Bible study class for employees.  As a nature lover, Richard was an avid gardener and a skilled outdoorsman.  For several years, he served as a volunteer with the Jacks Creek Fire Department.  Richard’s life personified the love of Jesus Christ with his friendly smile and humble spirit.  He was a blessing to all who knew him.  He will be greatly missed.

 

Surviving are his wife of 7 years:  Carolyn Wheeler Williams Bryant; son:  Jeff Bryant of Erwin; grandchildren:  Tara Bryant of Knoxville and Cody Bryant of Boone; sisters:  Ella B. Ward of Waynesboro, VA and Honnie Woodby and husband, Bill, of Burnsville; brother:  Fletcher Bryant of Burnsville; 4 step children:  Camille Buchanan of Bakersville, Mitzie Watts of Erwin and Terry and Patrick Williams of Burnsville; 11 step-grandchildren and a step-great-granddaughter.  Numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs.  Russell Hughes and Casey Williams will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Saturday in the Wheeler Family Cemetery at Riverside.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Friday at the funeral home prior to the service.

BILL BEAVER

Bill Beaver, 69, of Candler, passed away Monday, November 5, 2012 at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Will and Sara Laws Beaver and the husband of Ellen Bradford Beaver who died in 2007.  He had lived in Buncombe County since 1976 and was a retiree of Harris Teeter.  Bill was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, and an active member of the Dahlia Society, Pigeon Club and Beagle Club.

 

Surviving are daughters: Penny Beaver of Candler and Darlene Ponder and husband, Jon, of Asheville; a son: Gary Maney of Candler; a grandson:  Reilly Ponder of Asheville; two sisters: Nell Bryant of Green Mountain and Jean Gibson of Weaverville and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7 P. M. Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. The Revs. Allen Rash, Jim Hutchins and Jim Page will officiate. Private graveside services will be held on Friday in the Hughes Cemetery on Shoal Creek.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

JUNE TAYLOR RAMSEY

June Taylor Ramsey, 75, of Inverness, Florida, went home to Jesus on Thursday, November 1, 2012 at her home.  A native of Asheville, she was a daughter of the late Paul Judson and Pearle Fletcher Taylor.  She was a Traffic Manager for Mars White Knight in Asheville for many years.  June was an avid doll collector and enjoyed traveling, camping, crafts, and most importantly, spending time with her family. 

 

She is survived by her devoted husband of fifty-seven years:  Dennis L. Ramsey.  She was a loving mother to:  Mike (Linda) Ramsey of Flowery Branch, GA, Debbie (Jon) Pucillo of Inverness, FL, Terri (Tim) Burnette of Weaverville, Carole (Charles) Sharpe of Candler and Tina (Dwight) Waldrup of Raleigh.  She was an adoring mammaw to D. J. McCarson and Taylor Ramsey, whom resided with her, and Michael, Timmy, Tiffany, Miranda, Tara, Trey, Ashley, Christopher, Jacob, K. C., Tiffany, Ashley and Jon and 9 great grandchildren.  She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Timmy Burnette and Jason Hyatt will officiate.  Burial will be in the Westall Family Cemetery on Bolens Creek.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.    

WILLIAM VICTOR CLARK

William Victor Clarke, 93, passed away peacefully Monday, November 5, 2012 in Rialto, Calif with his wife of 56 years, Margaret Maney Clark and son, William Wesley Clark at his bedside.  He has been a resident of San Bernardindo County for 65 years.  “Vic” served in WWII Army Air Corps, as Master Sergeant, for four years in the 530th Bomb Squadron, 380th Bomb Group, most of the time in Australia.  After being discharged, he visited California and decided to stay.  He opened a plumbing and heating business in Fontana and continued working in the wholesale plumbing business until he retired.  The day after he retired he opened Clarke Plumbing Specialties, which his son bought and now operates.  He was always interested in inventing and was successful in getting a U.S. Patent.  He is preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings. 

 

Surviving are his wife Margaret, son William, and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 5:30 P. M.  Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at Stone Funeral Home in Upland, CA.

 

He will be laid to rest at 1 P. M. Saturday, November 17, 2012 in Horton Hill Cemetery in Burnsville, NC. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to cancer research. 

EDWIN HUBBARD

Edwin Hubbard, 91, of Ridge Top Lane, the Victor Fields, passed away Saturday, October 27, 2012 at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Charles R. and Grace Kirkpatrick Hubbard and the husband of Doris Winchell Hubbard who died in 2005.  He was a World War II Army Air Force Veteran.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.

DORIS BODFORD BOONE

Doris Bodford Boone, 78, of Burnsville, passed away Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at Brookside Rehab & Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Mae Rathbone Bodford.  She was the wife of Bobby Boone who died in 1969.  She was also preceded in death by a sister: Lela Price; and grandchildren:  Mark and Jonathan Henline.

 

Surviving are a daughter:  Amy Carroll and husband, Alan, a son:  Greg Boone and Lisa Wilson both of Burnsville; grandchildren:  Josh Henline and wife, Jamie, Bobby Boone and Sam Morrow, Jessica Wilson, Tina Wilson, Jessica McKinney and husband, Josh, and Autum Carroll; great grandchildren:  Laiken McKinney, Peyton McKinney, Kane Boone, Mackenzie, Brooklyn, Avery and Riley, Alex and Faith Henline, Joseph McComas and Corbin Baynard.

 

Funeral services will be held at 4 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Roger Thompson and Phillip Hughes will officiate.  Burial will be in the Hyatt Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

JETTA SILVERS

Jetta “Tootsie” Silvers, 82, of Candler, passed away Tuesday, October 23, 2012.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Lonnie and Bertie Williams Edwards.  She was also preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Edwards.  Tootsie was a former employee of Arbys Shoes.

 

Surviving are a sister:  Sue Higgins of Leicester; 6 nieces and nephews; 8 great nieces and nephews and a great-great niece.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Dale Banks will officiate.  Burial will be in the West Burnsville Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

RAY EDWARD ALLEN

Ray Edward Allen, 66, of Patterson Branch, passed away Thursday, October 18, 2012, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Frank and Madge Tipton Allen.  He was also preceded in death by a son:  Brian Allen.

 

Surviving are 2 sons:  Dustin Allen of Burnsville and James Ray Allen of Nashville, TN; his former wife:  Janice Allen Lowe; siblings:  JoAnn Phillips, Christine Hensley, Fred Allen, Jerry Allen, Steven Allen, Larry Allen, Bobby Allen and David Allen, all of Burnsville, Jan Ledford of Johnson City, TN,Joyce Letterman of Weaverville, and Donna Penland of South Carolina; and, a granddaughter.

 

A memorial service will be held at 8PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. 

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

JOY DIANE EDWARDS

Joy Diane Doan Edwards, 55, of Marion, born June 10, 1957, went to be with the Lord Sunday, October 14, 2012.

 

Surviving are her husband:  William Billy Edwards of Marion; mother:  Josephine Smith, and father: Leroy Doan of Greeneville, TN; two sons:   Stacy Edwards and wife, Tonya, and Travis Edwards and wife, Vonita; seven grandchildren:  Haley, Tracie, Breanna, Ethan, Ty, Preston and Dylan Edwards all of Marion; four brothers:  Rocky Doan of Greeneville, Ivan Doan and Victor Doan and wife, Pam, of Mars Hill and Barry Doan and wife, Gina, of Asheville; two sisters:  Holly Jamerson and husband, Darren, of Greeneville and Ruth Tyler of Asheville and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Thursday in Simms Fork Baptist Church.  Rev. Daniel Hensley will officiate.  Burial will be in the Simms Fork Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Wednesday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home where the body will remain until taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.
