JERRY GRIFFITH

Jerry Lee Griffith, 64, of Asheville, passed away Sunday, July 22, 2012, at Stonecreek Health & Rehabilitation.A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late J. C. “Rusty” and Gaynell Young Griffith.  He was also preceded in death by a sister:  Vernell Griffith Hill; and, a brother:  Ricky.  Jerry was a US Army Veteran.

 

Surviving are his sons:  Jerry O. Griffith of Rockingham and Eric Lee Griffith of Asheville; 3 grandchildren:  Eric Lee Griffith, Jr., Brianna Griffith and Houston Griffith; and, brothers:  Duane Griffith of Winston Salem and Wayne Griffith of New York.

 

Services will be held at 4PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Bill Whiteside will officiate.

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

JOE ROBINSON

Joe Robinson, 83, of the Double Island community went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Melvin and Dovie Buchanan Robinson.  He was also preceded in death by sisters:  Cora Presnell, Clorene Reo and Pauline Silvers; brothers:  Walter Bristoe, Howard, Mack C. and Ralph B. Robinson.  Joe was a retired spar mill worker and a member of Double Island Fire Department for eleven years. 

 

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Lucille Robinson; 4 sons:  Gerald Robinson and wife, Gail, Jimmy Robinson and wife, Evelyn, and Rick Robinson and wife, Teresa, all of Green Mountain and Kenny Robinson and wife, Lori, of Burnsville; 2 sisters:  Betty Smith of Asheville and Marie Roland of Marion; 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Saturday in Double Island Baptist Church of which he was a member and deacon for 43 years.  Revs. Ricky Woody and J. C. Wilson will officiate.  Burial will be in the Double Island Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Friday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.

GENEVA HONEYCUTT RIDDLE

Geneva Honeycutt Riddle, 88, of the Pensacola Community, went to be with the Lord Sunday, July 15, 2012 at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Wetzel and Delia Adkins Honeycutt.  She was also preceded in death by her son, Franklin Riddle, and brothers:  Glenn, Guy and Harold Honeycutt.  She was a wonderful, loving person who enjoyed the outdoors, tending her flowers and fishing.

 

Surviving are her loving husband of 71 years, Howard Riddle; 3 daughters:  Joyce Hensley and Janice Hooper, both of Burnsville, and Judy Arrowood of Old Fort; a sister:  Betty Hedrick of Burnsville; 15 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8 PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Joe Bennett and Philip Garland will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Wednesday in the Howard Riddle Family Cemetery on Rocky Fork. 

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

RUBY EDWARDS

Ruby Edwards, 95, of Langford Branch, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, July15, 2012 at Brookside Rehab and Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late J. E. and Lennie Williams Edwards.  She was also preceded in death by 5 brothers:  Jay, Clay, Jack, James and Solan Edwards; and 2 sisters:  Faye McIntosh and Eloise Lawton.

 

Surviving are a sister:  Elsie Wallace of Seneca, SC; sisters-in-law:  Thelma Edwards and Catherine Edwards of Burnsville.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Denver Styles will officiate.  Burial will be in the Jim Edwards Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.  At other times, the family will be at her home.

 

The family wishes to express special thanks to care givers, Thelma Edwards and Maggie Phillips.

GENELL ADKINS

Genell Adkins, 75 of  Bee Log, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, July 14, 2012, to be with her husband, Glenn Adkins, and son, Bobby Adkins.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Vance and Ersie Hensley.

 

She will forever be remembered by her loving children:  Katrina Bass and husband, Roland, of Marion; David Adkins and wife, Chrissy, and Doyle Adkins and wife, Donna, of Bee Log; 4 grandchildren:  Ashley Murphy and husband, Brandon, of Carthage, NC, Nathan Adkins of Sawmills, NC, Dillon Adkins and Amanda Adkins of Bee Log; and a great grandson that made her laugh:  Bryson Murphy.

 

Funeral Services will be held at 3 PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Joe Bennett will officiate.  Burial will be in the Bee Log Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

BEA ROBINSON

Bea Robinson, 94, of Newdale, went to her heavenly home Friday, July 13, 2012, to be with her husband, Byrle Robinson, who died in 2001.  A native of Mitchell County, she was a daughter of the late Jeter and Delia Masters McKinney.  She and her husband were owner/operators of Robinson's Dairy, serving Yancey and Mitchell Counties for over 30 years.

 

Surviving are a daughter:  Loretta Bryan and husband, Edwin, of Marion; a son:  Ronnie Robinson and wife, Rita, of Burnsville; a brother:  J. B. McKinney of Salisbury; 8 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 2 step-great grandchildren; and, a great, great granddaughter.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Sunday in Martins Chapel United Methodist Church, of which she was a member.  Revs. Tommy Robertson and Don Sneller will officiate.  Burial will be in the Strawbridge Young Cemetery at Newdale.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Saturday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, where the body will remain until taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.

LANA MILLER

Lana Miller passed from this life and entered her new life on June 27, 2012 at Davie Hospital in Mocksville, NC.  She was the daughter of the late Bayard T. Howell Sr. and Lillie Howell.  She was living in Mocksville, but will be returning to her hometown of Burnsville for her final resting place.

 

She will forever be remembered by her loving sons:  Robert Miller and Shawn Howell; stepdaughters:  Frieda Yelton, Wanda Bennett, Estell Willis, and Eloise Garland; a brother:  Bayard T. Howell and sisters:  Jean Webb and Hedy Wooten.

 

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  A graveside service will follow in the West Burnsville Baptist Church Cemetery.

SARAH ELIZABETH ELSAESSER

Sarah Elizabeth Elsaesser, 81, of Mars Hill, passed away on Sunday, July 1, 2012 at Mars Hill Retirement Community.  A native of Yancey County, she was the daughter of the late Claude and Hannah Mae Letterman Boone and the wife of Alexander Elsaesser who died in 2001. 

 

Surviving are her daughters:  Lesley Slate and husband, Dan, of Spruce Pine and Lisa Funk and husband, Dave, of Falcon, CO; a son:  Michael Elsaesser of Spruce Pine; 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

 

A memorial service will be held at 2 P.M. Saturday, July 7, 2012 in The Bridge Church.  Pastor Tom Anglin will officiate. 

 

 The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

PEARL KAY RENFRO

Pearl Kay Renfro, 90, of Marion, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at Autumn Care of Marion.  A native of Yancey County, she was the daughter of the late Lige and Mattie Howell Peterson.  She was also preceded in death by her husband:  Rex Renfro, who passed away in 1995; 3 brothers:  E. A., John and Zack Peterson; and, 3 sisters:  Maude Honeycutt, Ula Mae Cheek and Lorie Walker.

 

Surviving are her sons:  Ronnie Renfro and wife, Linda, of Glenwood, and Norman Renfro and wife, Yevonne, of Marion; 5 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and, 8 great, great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Jimmy Brewer will officiate.  Burial will follow in Peterson Hill Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

DONALD GRINDSTAFF

Donald Grindstaff, 68, of Halls Chapel went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at Brian Center Health and Rehab.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Edward Bud and Ruby Williams Grindstaff.  

 

Surviving are his wife of 43 years:  Dorothy Grindstaff; 2 sons:  Donald Grindstaff, Jr., and wife, Gina, and John Grindstaff ; 2 grandchildren:  Whitney and Chloe; and a brother:  Ollis Grindstaff and wife, Barbara, all of Burnsville; several loving nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews and 3 great great nieces.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A. M. Saturday in Halls Chapel Baptist Church, of which he was a member.  Rev. Holt Whitson, Jr., and Lonnie McClellan will officiate.  Burial will be in the Grindstaff Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 P. M. Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, where the body will remain until the funeral hour..
