BILLY RAY "BR" BAILEY

Billy Ray “BR” Bailey, 80, of Cane River, went to be with the Lord Sunday, June 24, 2012 in Blue Ridge Regional Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Roscoe and Maude Whittington Bailey.  He was a US Army Korean Conflict Veteran.  Mr. Bailey taught in the Yancey County School System for 35 years and was also an employee of J. F. Robinson Furniture Store.  He was a member of the Yancey County Camp of  The Gideons International, a member of the Burnsville Masonic Lodge No. 717 A.F. & A.M., served on the Selective Service Committee and served as a Yancey County Commissioner.  BR's life was his church, his family, friends and spending time in his garden. 

 

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Betty R. Bailey; 2 sons:  Roscoe Bailey and wife, Carol, and Michael Bailey and wife, Mary; grandchildren:  Nikki Ray, Lauren Chriscoe and husband, Matthew, Megan Randolph and husband, Jason, Kyle Gardner and Shea Gibson; and great grandchildren:  Griffin Ray and Riley and Kinley Randolph.

 

The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 P.M. Sunday, July 1, 2012 in the Cane River Baptist Church of which he was a life-long member, Deacon and Sunday School Teacher.  A Celebration Of Life Service will follow at 3 P.M. in the church.  Revs. Shane Cassida and James Lamb will officiate.  Masonic rites will be conferred by Burnsville Lodge.

GOLDA WILLIAMS

Golda Williams, 86, of the Ramseytown Community, passed away Friday, June 22, 2012 in the Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington, NC.   A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Wilce and Lula Miller Adkins and the wife of Troy Williams who died in 2003.   She was also preceded in death by brothers, Glen and Boyd Adkins, and half-sisters, Reba Whitson and Jessie Hedrick.

 

Surviving are three sons: R. L. Williams and wife, Janice, of Lexington, Dennis Williams and wife, Diana, and Rockey Williams of Burnsville; sisters: Lena Bailey of Delaware and Sharon Nelson of Jonesborough, TN; two brothers: Dwight Adkins of Concord and Roger Adkins of Jonesborough; 8 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and a great-great granddaughter.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7 P.M. Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Raymond Phillips will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 A.M. Tuesday in the Henry Howard Cemetery on Piney Hill.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

LOLA MAY COX

Lola May Cox, 84, of Burnsville, passed away  Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Oklahoma, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Bertha Cockrell Baker.  She worked 30 years at Sun Lite Manufacturing Company.  She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Lewis Cox in 2003 and Virgil Banks in 1981; her sisters:  Rosemary, Lavon and Lilly; and a brother, Eddie.

 

Surviving are a son:  Jerry McCullough of Mt. Clemens, MI; a daughter:  Sharon Hunt of Cherokee, NC; 7 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; five stepchildren: Janet Bayless of Blue Springs, MO; Donna Cox of Independence, MO; Debbie Aldridge of Cameron, MO; Gary Cox of Warrensburg, MO and Gail Brooks of Horn Lake, MS; 10 step grandchildren; 11 step great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and her 5 dogs.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Dr. Chris Morgan will officiate.  Burial will be in the Banks Cemetery on Bolens Creek.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

MARGARET ZELLMER

Margaret  Zellmer, 89, of Burnsville, passed away Saturday, June 16, 2012 at the Spruce Pine Brian Center. A native of New Jersey, she was a retired realtor.

 

Surviving are a sister, Dorothy Lowa of Punta Gorda, Fl., a brother Arthur Schissel of Kenningston , Calif. and special friends Icket and Linda Thomas of Burnsville.

A  memorial service will be held at 3 P. M. Sunday in Burnsville First Presbyterian Church.  Pastor Bill Lindeman will officiate.

GRACE McINTOSH SILVERS

Grace McIntosh Silvers, 82, of Jacks Creek, passed away Wednesday June 13, 2012 at Memorial Mission Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Carl and Omega Evans McIntosh and the wife of Horace Silvers who died June 27, 2006.    She was also preceded in death by brothers: Carl Lee, Nealy and Clyde McIntosh.   Grace was an active member of the Jacks Creek Presbyterian Church.

 

Surviving are a son: Gary Silvers and wife, Sue, five daughters: Rowena Sprouse and husband, Ray, Mary Jane Boyd, Virginia Ray and husband, Jimmy, Johnnie Hassen and husband, Danny, and Julia Fox and husband, Randy; a brother: Carl McIntosh of Columbia, SC; two nieces: Jean McIntosh and Jill Austin, and a nephew: Samuel McIntosh; 13 grandchildren: Kristal Thomas, Matthew Morrow, Jason Silvers, Kelly Wilson, David Weaver, Dustin Weaver, Jon Ray, Jamie Ray, Holly Ray, Cloie Shook, Chase Fox, Carleigh Fox and Caden Fox; 5 great grandchildren: Kirstie and Brooke Thomas, Gracie Clark, Alexis Silvers and Griffin Ray; and a great-great grandson, Darren Hays.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3 P.M. Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.    Burial will be in the Wilson Cemetery on John Henry Road.

 

The family will receive friends from 1 until 3 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home.  At other times, the family will be at her home on Jacks Creek.

MILDRED BOONE

Mildred Boone, 85, of Green Mountain went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Ancil and Addie Woody Gortney and the wife of Clyde Boone who died in 1996.  She was a member of Covey Rock Free Will Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are a daughter:  Linda Maltba and husband, Johnny; a son:  Bill Boone and wife, Brenda; a brother:  Brown Gortney; a granddaughter:  Paula Smith and husband, Jeff; a grandson:  Bryan Boone and wife, Kelly; great grandchildren:  Teah and Mikayla Thomason, and Taylor and Alex Boone; and a great-great granddaughter, Gracelyn Burnett all of Green Mountain.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Charlie Carroway and Scot Garland will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 2 PM Sunday in the Boone Cemetery on Plum Branch.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home.

CHARLENE GARDNER BRIGGS

Charlene Gardner Briggs of Asheville passed away Sunday, June 3, 2012 at Aston Park Health Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Daisy Brown Gardner and the wife of Shelby Briggs who died in 2007.  She was also preceded in death by a brother, Gene Gardner and a sister, Martha Jane Elliott.

 

Surviving are a son:  Doug Briggs of Morganton; a daughter:  Karen Bartlett of Asheville; 3 grandchildren:  Matthew, Emily and Alison; 1 great grandson:  Aiden; a brother:  Jim Gardner of Burnsville a sister:  Libby Mitchell of Old Fort and sisters-in-law:  Glenna Gardner and Joyce Gardner of Burnsville.

 

A memorial service will be held at 5 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Randy Sheppard will officiate.

 

The family will receive friends from 4:30 until 5 PM Friday prior to the service at the funeral home.

JULIA FOX JONES

Julia Fox Jones, 86, of  Shoal Creek, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, June 2, 2012, at Brookside Rehabilitation & Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Sol and Dullie Laws Fox.  She was the wife of the Gaither Jones who died in 1982.   Julia was also preceded in death by a son: Verlin Jones; a grandson: Daryl Jones; 7 brothers; and, 5 sisters.   She was a member of Shoal Creek Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are her children:  Bobby Jones and wife, Susie, of Icard, Mildred Deal and husband, Larry, Shirley Yelton, Roger Jones and wife, Ronna, all of Burnsville; grandchildren:  Terry Hensley, Teddy Hensley, Sherry Sparks, Bobbie Jo O’Renick, Melisa Randolph, Tammy Jones, and Miranda Barrier; great grandchildren:  Christopher Yelton, Danielle O’Renick, Casey Randolph, Lucas Randolph, Samantha O’Renick, Shelby Sparks, Jonathan O’Renick, Brionna Hensley, and Cody Barrier; great, great grandchild:  Mason Miller; and, 2 sisters: Ollie Laws and Nola Beaver of Burnsville.

 

Funeral Services will be held at 2 P.M. Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Terry Hensley, Scot Garland and Jim Sutton will officiate.  Burial will be in the Dulaney Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home, and at other times at her home on Shoal Creek.

ROBERT ERNEST TREADWAY

Ernest Treadway, 78, of the Little Creek Community, passed away surrounded by his loved ones, Friday, June 1, 2012, at his home.  A native of Unicoi County, TN, he was a son of the late Arthur and Mary Lee Bailey Treadway.  He was also preceded in death by a brother:  Dallas Treadway; a sister:  Willie Dean Rocchins; and, a great granddaughter:  Mariah Halker.  He proudly served his country in the Korean Conflict.  Ernest will be remembered for his legacy of being a skilled carpenter. 

        

Surviving are his wife of 55 years:  Anita Edwards Treadway; three daughters:  Janet Ray and husband, Phillip, of Mars Hill, Melinda Peek and husband, Dennis, of Jacksonville, FL and Lisa Halker and husband, Gary of Burnsville, a son: Ernie Treadway and wife, Tracy, of Burnsville; twelve grandchildren: Brandon, Josh, James, Heather, Alex, Nathan, Brad, Dawn, April, Tasha, Justin and P.J.;  10 great grandchildren:  Aleigh, Shelby, Hannah, Heather, Bryce, Ethan, Dylan, Taylor, Jason and Blake; three sisters; four brothers; and, several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.   Burial will be in the Edwards family Cemetery on Little Creek.

 

The family will receive friends from 3 until 5 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home.

ALTHA RANDOLPH WATTS

Altha Randolph Watts, 94, of the Little Creek Community, went home to be with the Lord Friday, June 1, 2012, at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late George Grayson and Eva Cooper Randolph.  She was the wife of the late Rose Watts.  She was also preceded in death by a son:  J. C. Watts; a brother:  Clenford Randolph; and, a sister:  Welda Mitchum.  Altha attended Little Creek Holiness Church.  She was an avid gardener with a passion for quilting.

 

Surviving are her children:  Annette Troutman (Ed) of Burnsville, George Watts (Deborah) of Burnsville, Shirley Mitchell (Bill) of Marion and Peggy Pate (Bill) of Clinton, SC; 20 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; and 18 great-great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Bill Mitchell and Don Mitchell will officiate.  Burial will be in the Elkins Cemetery on Prices Creek.

 

The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

The family wishes to express a special appreciation to Michelle Phillips for her love and kindness for their Mother.
