MAE McCURRY

Mae McCurry, 93, of Mountain View Road, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late James and Martha Blalock Geouge and the wife of John B. McCurry who died in 1989.  She was a member of Crabtree Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are her children:  Christine Wilson and husband, J. B., Wayne McCurry and wife, Wilma, and Tony McCurry and wife, Pat, all of Burnsville, Lavonia Buchanan and husband, Ray, of Green Mountain and Wade McCurry and wife, Rosalyn, of Mitchell County; grandchildren:  Dean McCurry, Benny, Terry, Steve, Amanda and James Buchanan, Kenneth McCurry and Denise McCurry; 10 great grandchildren; 2 sisters:  Georgia Hall of Fredericksburg, MD and Marie Bruce of Hurt, VA.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Blair Harvey will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday in the Crabtree Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

DORIS MURIEL TALLENT

Doris Muriel Tallent, 82, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, February 21, 2011 at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Lester and Lakie Mullins Peterson.  She was also preceded in death by a son:  Frank Tallent; a sister:  Elsie Peterson Fox and 2 brothers:  Fred and Eddie Peterson.  Doris was a member of Landmark Baptist Church. She was a loving mother and grandmother.

 

Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Fred Tallent; 3 daughters:  Carolyn Honeycutt and husband, Jake, Norma Westall and fiancé, Junior Grindstaff, and Becky Phillips and husband, Morris, all of Burnsville; grandchildren:  Heather Cutts, Todd Westall, Shane Honeycutt and wife, Shelly, Holly Wilson and husband, Austin, and Laken Phillips; 3 great grandsons:  Hunter Wilson and Kevin and Austin Crave; 3 sisters:  Norma Willard and Sonja Peterson of Burnsville and Kathleen Whitson of Mill Springs; 3 brothers:  Kenneth Peterson of Crossville, TN, Elva Ray Peterson of Graniteville, SC and Tony Peterson of Armada, Michigan.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. David Bryant will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday in the Byrd Cemetery at Ramseytown. 

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times, will be at her home or 358 New Ground Drive.

MILDRED TURNER

Mildred Turner, 95, passed away Sunday, February 20, 2011 at the Brian Center of Spruce Pine.  A native and resident of Pink Hill, NC, she moved to Burnsville 8 years ago.  She attended Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church.  She was a member of the Woman’s Club of Burnsville and Chapter CG PEO.

 

Surviving are 2 daughters:  Becky Gillespie and husband, Charles, of Burnsville and Debbie Dekle and husband, Brent, of Mount Pleasant, SC; a son:  L. H. Turner,Jr.  and wife, Carolyn, of Woodstock, GA; 4 grandchildren:  Davis Gillespie and wife, Ruth, of Chesapeake, VA, Joe Gillespie of Marietta, GA, Margaret Nichols of Marietta, GA and Leigh Dekle of New Orleans, LA; 7 great grandchildren:  Carter, Jake, Alex, Branin, Meg, and Turner Gillespie and Turner Nichols.

 

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday in  Pink Hill United Methodist Church.  Burial will be in the Oak Ridge Memorial Park, Pink Hill, NC.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 PM Friday at Pink Hill Funeral Home.  A memorial service will be held at a later date in Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church in Burnsville.

OLA MAY WOODY

Ola May Woody, 69, of Celo passed away Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at Mission Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of Sinia Styles Hughes of Burnsville and the late Zeb Hughes and the wife of Vernon Woody who died in 2006. She was also preceded in death by a daughter:  Donna Harding and a brother:  James “Duck” Hughes.

 

Surviving in addition to her mother, are a daughter:  Anita Woody of the home; a son:  Jerry Woody and wife, Annie, of Burnsville; grandchildren:  Robert Woody and wife, Chasity, Wendy Woody and fiancé, David Stansberry, Billy Woody, and Aleshia, Crystal and Gracie Harding; 2 great grandchildren:  Madelyn Stansberry and Calie Woody; 2 sisters:  Polly Lane and husband, Ray, of Burnsville and Joyce Buchanan of Johnson City, TN; 3 brothers:  Roger Hughes of Spruce Pine and Billy and Paul Hughes of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday in the Morning Star Baptist Church, of which she was a member.  Pastor Billy Mitchell will officiate.  Burial will be in the Morning Star Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 PM Thursday at Morning Star Baptist Church.

JEWELL HUGHES

On February 14, 2011, Jewell Hughes, 83, of Burnsville was escorted by angels to be with her valentine, Scotty Hughes, who passed away in 1989.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Pansy Boone McCracken.  Jewell was also preceded in death by a grandson, Daniel Scott Ray, three sisters and two brothers.

 

Surviving are 3 daughters:  Rebecca Robinson and husband, Rev. Perry Robinson, and Debra Robinson and husband, Steve, all of Burnsville and Tammy Ray of Marion; a son:  Vance Hughes and wife, Patsy, and a brother:  Elzie McCracken all of Burnsville; 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8:00 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Dale Banks will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday in the Pete Young Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 PM Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times, will be at the home of Rebecca and Perry Robinson.

NANCY S. SHAW

Nancy Sexton Shaw, 91, of Burnsville, passed away Friday, February 11, 2011.A native of Grayson County, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late George Hurley and Lucy Donna Smith Sexton.  Nancy was the wife of Cecil Shaw who died in 1992.  She was also preceded in death by brothers: Wayne, George and Loxley Sexton and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Stephens.

 

 Nancy’s nursing career began at Virginia Baptist Hospital School of Nursing.  She worked at hospitals in Virginia and North Carolina.  While employed as an industrial nurse in Baltimore, Maryland, she met and later married her husband, Cecil.

 

Nancy and Cecil moved to Burnsville in 1968.  After working a couple of years at Burnsville Hospital, Nancy became the first school health nurse and was then instrumental in establishing the first Health Occupations Program in the Yancey County school system in 1973.  This fulfilled her dream of becoming a teacher.  She maintained this position until her retirement in 2005, thus completing two thirty-year careers.  While in the school system she was recognized with many local, state and national honors.  Nancy served on numerous board positions in the area and was a charter member of Mt. Mitchell Eastern Star Chapter.

  

Surviving are four brothers: Billy Sexton and wife Evelyn, of Bedford, VA, Randy Sexton and wife Charlotte of Goode, VA, Jimmy Sexton and wife Patsy of Bedford and Brownie Sexton of Madison Heights, VA; three sisters: Eva Storie of Mountain City, TN, Sally Hensley of Bedford and Shirley Bradley and husband Kermit of Rustburg, VA; a sister-in-law, Frannie Thomas of Raleigh; a special niece, Glenda Aschenback and husband Jeff of Piney Flats, TN; neumrous nieces and nephews and dear friends Jeri Storie, Charlie Hensley, Lyn Hensley, Pat Fender and Elaine Dellinger.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Sunday in Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church, of which she was a member.  The Rev. Wes Sharpe will officiate. Entombment will be in Spruce Pine Memorial Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:30 PM prior to the service at the church.

IKE WILLIAMS

Ike Williams, 84, of the Pensacola Community, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at his home.  A native of Cocke County, TN, he was a son of the late Harrison and Ida Barnes Williams.  He was also preceded in death by a sister, Dora Wilson and brothers:  Henry, Blaine and Carl Williams and Will Large.  Ike was a retired logger.

 

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Elouise Burleson Williams; 2 daughters:  Jackie Fox and husband, Ronald, of Burnsville and Tammy Collier and husband, Steve, of Marion; grandchildren:  Jacob Fox, Sampson Collier and wife, Chastity, and Heather Alexander and husband, Daniel; 2 great grandchildren:  Taten and Paten Collier; a sister:  Ina Holt of Hampton, VA and a brother: Bruce Williams of Newport, TN.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday in the Sharp Top Cemetery.  Rev. Norman Loveless will officiate.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 P.M. Friday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.

BETTY JEAN FREEMAN

Betty Jean Freeman, 71, of the Bowditch Community, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, February 5, 2011.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Theodore and Ruth Robinson Freeman, and a retired employee of Glen Raven Mills.

 

Surviving are a daughter:  Sherry Fender and husband, Bill; two grandsons:  Johathan and Casey Fender, all of Burnsville; 3 sisters:  Genavee Layell and Willa Mae Whitson of Burnsville and Jerlean Silvers and husband, Stanley, of Swannanoa; a brother:  Doyle Freeman and wife, Teresa, of Mills River; a niece; a nephew; a great niece; and. two great nephews.  Betty Jean was very devoted to her family and friends.

 

Funeral services will be held at 1 P. M. Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Pastor Charlie Carroway will officiate.  Burial will be in the Gibbs Cemetery at Bald Creek.

 

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 P. M. Sunday at the funeral home and at other times will be at the home of Willa Mae Whitson.

HOBERT MURPHY

Hobert Murphy, 84, of Murphytown, passed away Saturday, January 29, 2011, in Brookside Rehabilitation & Care.  A native and lifelong resident of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Will and Mary Garland Murphy.  Hobert was the husband of Beulah Carroll Murphy, who died in 2007.  He was also preceded in death by a son:  Stanley Murphy; and, brothers:  Conway, Ray and Fred Murphy.  He was a lifelong logger and farmer, and a retired employee of Avondale Mills.  Hobert was a lifelong member of Locust Grove Church.  He enjoyed hunting.

 

Surviving are his children:  Norman Murphy and wife, Nancy, of Maiden, Wilburn Murphy and wife, Mary Lou, of Burnsville, Kathy Johnson and husband, Claude, of Forest City, and Max Murphy of Green Mountain; a sister:  Atlas Bryant of Burnsville; 7 grandchildren:  Audy, Randall, Matthew and Shane Murphy, Melissa Bryant, Hannah Johnson, and Samantha Murphy; and, 9 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Philip Garland and Perry Norton will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Tuesday in White Oak Flats Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Donnie and Kelly Bryant, Jerry and Gary Murphy, E. J. Adkins, and Vance and Tony Honeycutt.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 PM Monday prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

The family wants to extend a very special thanks to:  Jessica Hensley and her family, the staff of Hospice of Yancey and Brookside, and to all the caregivers during Hobert's illness.

TOM ROBINSON, JR.

Tom Robinson, Jr., 84, of the Pleasant Gap Community, passed away Saturday, January 29, 2011, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Tom and Molly Presnell Robinson.  He was also preceded in death by a sister:  Ada Sparks; and, brothers:  Shelby, Fred, Barney, and Homer Robinson.  Tom worked at International Minerals for 35 years.

 

Surviving are his wife of 62 years:  June Thomas Robinson; and, a son:  Greg Robinson.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Steve Grindstaff will officiate.  Burial will be in the Fred Young Cemetery at Pleasant Gap.

 

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7PM Sunday at the funeral home.
