FAYE PETERSON

Faye Peterson, 84, of Green Mountain went home to be with the Lord, Friday, December 10, 2010 at Mountain Manor Assisted Living.  A native of Mitchell County, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Ella Gage Stewart.  She was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert Stewart and sisters:  Mattie Greene, Ruth McKinney and Doris Maness.  Faye was a member of North Bend Freewill Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are her husband:  T. J. Peterson, three daughters:  Elaine Byrd and husband, Jerry, and Martha Peterson of Burnsville and Ann Ruetschle and husband, Jim, of Durango, Colorado; 5 grandsons and 2 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:00 P.M. Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Dean Murphy and Roger Laws will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday in the Fairview Cemetery at Horton Hill.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

ANDY AUSTIN

Andy Austin, 22, of the Cane River Community died Thursday December 9, 2010 from injuries received in an automobile accident.  A native of Yancey County, he was the son of Joe and Rachel Peterson Austin.  Andy was a 2006 graduate of Mountain Heritage High School.  He was preceded in death by his Maternal grandmother, Peggy Peterson and Paternal grandfather, Wade Austin.

       

 Surviving in addition to his parents are sister, Maria Austin of Kentucky, Maternal grandfather, Marvin Peterson, of Poplar, paternal grandmother, Johnnie Morrow Austin of Cane River, a nephew, Hunter Isaacs, 3 aunts Kenitra Higgins, Theresa Briggs and Wanda Miller, 4 uncles Bill and Scott Austin and Rick and Roger Peterson, several cousins and friends including a special friend Mike Copeland.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 P. M. Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Stacy Elkins will oficiate. Burial will be in the Wade Austin Family Cemetery on Sam Robertson Road.

The family will receive friends from 12 Noon until 2 P. M.  prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

ELLA RAYE SINCLAIR

Ella Raye Sinclair, 86, of Blankenship Creek, passed away Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at Memorial Mission Hospital.  A native of Florida, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Kathleen Wiggins Fincher.  She was the wife of the late Joe Sinclair.  Raye had been a resident of Burnsville for the past 22 years.  She enjoyed the outdoors, her flowers and gardening.

 

Surviving are two sons:  Joseph Marion Sinclair and wife, Donna, of Milton, FL and Bill Sinclair and wife, Mabel, of Burnsville; a daughter:  Jan Allen and husband, Dennis, of Lodi, OH; 3 grandchildren:  Joe Sinclair, Leigh Riddle and Amanda Allen and 4 great grandchildren:  Nicholas, C.J. Samatha and Chloe.

 

Private family services will be held in Sinclair Family Cemetery in Gerton.

WILLIAM MURRAY, JR.

William Murray, Jr. left this earth peacefully on November 29, 2010, at the age of 92.  Born on August 8, 1918, Bill was 11 years old when the Great Depression began.  During WWII Bill achieved the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy, and was a radioman in dive-bombing planes that flew over 500 missions off aircraft carriers for the Naval Air Corps.  Bill was awarded several medals for courage and service, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Navy Air Medal.

 

Bill was predeceased by his daughter:  Mary Jude Wahla; beloved wife:  Lauretta (Hannagan) Murray; his beloved granddaughter:  Brenna Rae Murray-Moore; and, his youngest siblings:  Katherine, Edward, Evelyn Cusack and Gertrude Abele.  He is survived by his children:  Margaret (Glenn) Man of Honolulu, HI, William (Mary Ellen) Murray of Troy, NY, Paul (Marlene) Murray of Averill Park, NY, Jeannette Murray of Burnsville, NC, Anne (Kirk) Engel of San Francisco, CA, Laura Murray (James) of New Scotland, NY, and Michael (Denise) Murray of Valparaiso, IN; and, his younger sibling:  Thomas (Shirley) Murray of Waterford, NY.  Bill was the proud grandfather of Gabriel and Kathleen Man, Christopher, William, Brian and Shawn Murray, Noelle Evertsen, Paul and Patrick Murray, Alexander and Andrew Engel, and Olivia and Dennis Murray.  His great grandchildren are:  Jackson Murray, Sydney Evertsen, Harry, Zoey and Ryan Man, and Colin, Finnoula and Estella Murray.

 

Bill was a faithful communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Troy, NY, then St. Henry’s in Averill Park, NY, and, finally, Sacred Heart Church in Burnsville. 

 

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 A.M. Saturday December 18, 2010  in Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

HOWARD HUGHES

Howard Hughes, 87, of Rocky Spring Heights, Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 25, 2010, Thanksgiving Day, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Fonze and Susie Fox Hughes.  He was also preceded in death by 3 brothers: Arthur, Homer and Richard Hughes, and a sister, Francis Whitson.

 

Surviving are his wife of 67 years:  Mary Burleson Hughes of the home; 3 daughters:  Shirley House of Salisbury, Renee Miller and Patricia McManus of Concord; 2 brothers:  Farrell Hughes of Burnsville, and Lloyd Hughes of Hickory; 4 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 6:00 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Scot Garland and Junior Peterson will officiate.  Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM Sunday in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

JAMES MONROE ATKINS

A son, father, brother and soldier, James Monroe Atkins, passed away Wednesday, November 24, 2010 in St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Washington.  Born in Pensacola, NC  October 25, 1927, he was a son of the late Thomas Monroe and Bertha Haynie Atkins.  He was also preceded in death by brothers Edgar E. and Thomas E. Atkins and a sister, Edna Atkins Airheart.

 

Mr. Atkins left Yancey County in February 1946 to enter the U S Army and served  during World War II in Japan and later received the World War II Victory medal and Army Occupation medal.  Jim was honorably discharged in 1947 and was employed in Alaska for a period of time, followed by settling in Tacoma, Washington, where he made his home for the remainder of his life.

 

Surviving are a sister Virginia A. (Ginny) Banks of Burnsville and a brother Morris D. Atkins and wife Cecilia of Pelzer, SC, two daughters Jodi Almquist and husband Kenny of Graham, Washington and Jennifer Atkins of Tacoma and several nieces and nephews in North and South Carolina.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 P. M. Friday December 3, 2010 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Military honors will be conducted by Sgt. E. L. Randolph Chapter 57, DAV.  Burial will be in the Atkins-Ledford Cemetery at Pensacola.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

EDD L. CHANDLER

Edd L. Chandler, 88, of the Ivy Gap community, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, November 23, 2010, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Pierce and Jaylina McKinney Chandler.  He was also preceded in death by 2 brothers:  Vernon and Bobby Chandler; and, 3 sisters:  Pearl Deaver, Myrtle Deaver and Nina Chandler.  A World War II Army Veteran, Edd was a member and past master of Bald Creek Masonic Lodge #397, A.F. & A.M. and a member of Ivy Gap Baptist Church. 

Surviving are his loving wife of 64 years:  Dorothy Buckner Chandler; a daughter:  Mary C. Laws and husband, Paris; and a son:  Ronnie Chandler, both of Mars Hill; 4 grandchildren:  Kim Thomas, Bobby Douglas Miller, Angie Sutton and Lauren Lovell; 5 great grandchildren:  Rindi, Robbie, Olivia, Kerra and Aaron; 2 sisters:  Dorothy Fox of Mars Hill and Carolyn Shepherd of Burnsville; and, 2 brothers:  Calvin Chandler of Mars Hill and Donald Chandler of Flat Creek.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Denver Styles, Allen McKinney and Joe Bennett will officiate.  Masonic grave rites will be conferred by Bald Creek Masonic Lodge # 397 at 11 AM Saturday in the Chandler Cemetery at Ivy Gap.

 

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

HETTIE HALL ROBINSON

Hettie Hall Robinson, 102, of Micaville, passed away Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at Mission Hospitals St Joseph Campus.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Chester and Lottie Earley Hall and the wife of Leland Robinson who died in 1991.  She was also preceded in death by a son, Tommy Robinson.

 

Surviving are a son, Gary Robinson of Micaville; 4 granddaughters and 5 great grandchildren.

 

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 P.M. Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Rick DeJesus will officiate.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service.

MARIE ROBINSON

Marie Robinson, 88, of Cane River went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, November 16, 2010 in Mountain Manor Assisted Living.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Glen and Cara Roland Evans and the wife of Dallas Robinson who died in 1999.  She was also preceded in death by an infant son, Harold Lee Robinson and brothers: Herman, Waymon, Lee and Bill Evans.  Marie was a member of the Double Island Baptist Church. 

 

Surviving are 2 sisters:  Genevieve McIntosh and Mary Glen Penland of Burnsville; a brother:  Nick Evans of San Jose, California, and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. The Rev. Charlie Carroway will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday in the Roland Cemetery on Roland Branch. 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times, will be at the home of Mary Glen Penland. 

RUBY McMAHAN

Ruby McMahan, 79, of Seven Mile Ridge went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Mitchell County, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence and Mamie Young Cox and the wife of Carl McMahan who passed in 2005.  She was also preceded in death by brothers:  Shelby and Albert Cox and son-in-law:  Dennis Hall.

 

Surviving are two daughters:  Linda Hall and Betty Blevins of Marion; a son:  Buddy McMahan and wife, Carolyn, of Burnsville; 4 grandchildren:  Carla McMahan, Gary McMahan and wife, Regina, Jennifer Blevins and T. J. Blevins and wife, Jaime, and 2 great grandchildren:  Adam and Dylan Blevins.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8:00 P. M. Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Ricky Woody and Billy Mitchell will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A. M. Saturday in the Ballew Cemetery on Seven Mile Ridge Road.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 P. M. Friday prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times, will be at the home of Buddy McMahan.
