JAMES M. MURPHY

James M. Murphy, 71, of White Oak Creek Community went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Dewey and Essie Shuford Murphy.  James was a retired employee of Glen Raven Mills.  He was a Charter Member and former Chief of South Toe Fire Department.

 

Surviving are his son: Derek Murphy and wife, Denise; a granddaughter:  Jordan Murphy; a sister:  Sabra Pritchard and husband, Lewis; a niece: Shirleen Berry and husband, Randy; and a great nephew:  Charlie Berry all of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8:00 P.M. Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Bradley Boone and Tony Laws will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday in the Autrey Cemetery at South Estatoe Baptist Church.

 

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. prior to the service at the funeral home.

SARAH BURRUS WARDLAW

Sarah Burrus Wardlaw, age 82, of Mount Airy, NC, who resided  four years at Brookside Rehabilitation & Care in Burnsville, NC, died there on October 11, 2010.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jack Wardlaw, and a sister-in-law:  Arlene Hobbs Burrus.

 

The eldest child of the late William Edgar and Edith Oakley Burrus of Mount Airy, Sarah is survived by the grateful siblings who benefited from her love of family.  Through the years, she helped each one of them in many ways.  They are:  William Allen Burrus of Kinston, Mary Ann Wampler and husband, Garland, of Burnsville, Thomas Lee Burrus and wife, Anita, of Davie, FL/Blowing Rock, NC, and Layne Burrus and wife, Nonna, of Helena, AL.  Also surviving is her stepdaughter:  Dottie Wardlaw Salerno of Greensboro, NC, who worked diligently on Sarah’s behalf since 2005.  She leaves several nieces and nephews.

 

Sarah’s business career spanned 60 years, including Surry Dairy and Coble Dairy.  She was a longtime employee of Spencer’s, Inc. in Mount Airy, where she was in the payroll department and served the founder, Les Hatcher, as secretary.


She was an expert knitter, appreciated God’s creation, birds and flowers, loved reading, and visiting friends and relatives.  She will be remembered by her friends and co-workers as a quiet, capable, loyal servant of God and others.  She found joy in serving as a choir member with a beautiful voice and was active in other church activities.  Sarah was a longtime member of
Central United Methodist Church and more recently attended the Mount Airy Friends Meeting.

 

The family will receive friends and relatives from 1:00 until 2:00 P. M. on Friday, October 15, 2010 in the Ladies Parlor of Central United Methodist Church.  A graveside service will follow in Oakdale Cemetery in Mount Airy officiated by Rev. John Ferre, Pastor of CUMC.

PAULINE RAY LEWIS

Pauline Ray Lewis, 93, of Burnsville, passed away Friday October 8, 2010 at Mountain Manor Assisted Living.    A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Judson and Nettie Hensley Ray and the wife of Oliver Lewis who died in 1993.   She was also preceded in death by a daughter Judy Robinson, sisters; Edna Smith and Nell Boone, and brothers; John Ray and Luther Ray.   Pauline was a nursing assistant with Yancey and Burnsville Hospitals.

 

Surviving are a daughter Donna Lewis of Manhattan Beach, CA.  Two grandchildren; Brian Robinson and wife Corey and Sherra Blackburn and husband John.  Two great granddaughters; Sydney Smith and Macy Robinson.

 

Memorial services will be held at 7 P.M. Monday October 11, in the Bolens Creek Baptist Church of which she was the oldest living member. Dr. Chris Morgan will officiate.   The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Church.

MAUDE WHETSTINE HENSLEY

Maude Whetstine Hensley, 94, of Celo, went to be with the Lord, Monday, October 4, 2010 at Blue Ridge Community Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Ed and Nancy Sowers Whetstine.  She was the wife of Sam J. Hensley who died in 1985.  Maude was also preceded in death by 2 sons:  David R. Hensley and Joseph E. Hensley; a daughter-in-law:  Gloria Hensley; 2 sisters:  Pearl Geouge and Foy Geouge and a brother:  Ivan Whetstine.  Maude was a loving Mother and Grandmother.

 

Surviving are 3 sons:  Maurice Hensley and wife, Betty, and Jerry Hensley of Ocala, FL and Jack Hensley and wife, Dena, of Burnsville; 7 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and a great-great grandson.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday in Browns Creek Baptist Church of which she was a member.  Pastors Mike Grindstaff and Jim Sutton will officiate.  Burial will be in Carroway Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home where the body will remain until the service hour. 

 

 

GRADY FENDER

Grady Fender, 87, of the Bald Creek Community, passed away Monday, September 27, 2010 at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Charles and Cenia Tolley Fender and was also preceded in death by a brother, Jack Fender.  A World War II Army Veteran, Grady was a member of Bald Mountain Free Will Baptist Church.  He was a life-long farmer.

 

Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Alice Hensley Fender; 5 children:  William Grady Fender and wife, Pat, Edd Fender and wife, Joanna, Geraldine Whitson and husband, Mike, Iva Green and husband, Jerry, and Faye Fender Maney; 8 grandchildren:  Sherry, Michelle, Sean, Brent, Alicia, Hannah, Lance and Neil; 10 great-grandchildren and a brother:  Herman Fender.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Ken Sausedo and Jerry Shelton will officiate.  Burial will be at 2:00 P.M  in the Western Carolina State Veterans’ Cemetery at Black Mountain.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

CLYDE WILFORD CRISSONE

 

Clyde W. “Possum” Crissone, 58, of Roaring Fork Road, passed away Sunday, September 26, 2010, at his home.  A native of Polk County, he was a son of the late Clyde and Mary Flannigan Crissone.  He was preceded in death by 2 sisters.  “Possum” was an avid Carolina Tarheel fan and enjoyed NASCAR racing.

 

Surviving are his wife of 29 years:  Carol Sue Wilson Crissone; 4 brothers:  Dave Crissone and wife, Linda, Bill Crissone and wife, Cricket, and Bud Crissone, all of Columbus, and Johnny Crissone of Hazel Green, AL; and, 5 sisters:  Bobbie Nodine and husband, Tim, and Jane Crissone of Columbus, Peggy Robinson and husband, Bill, of Asheville, Joyce Arrowood and husband, Sonny, of Black Mountain and Wanda Crissone of CA.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

BRUCE BAILEY

Bruce Baccus Bailey, 94, of Jacks Creek, died Saturday, September 25, 2010 at his home.  He was born November 21, 1915 in Yancey County to the late Mack and Zella Bailey.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters:  Nelle Bailey and Pauline Hensley; and brother: Earl Bailey.  He was a member of Jacks Creek Baptist Church where he served as deacon and in other capacities.

 

He is survived by his wife of 74 years: Gwen Valley Bailey; a daughter:  Genene Muse and husband Jim of Macon, GA; 2 grandchildren: Melany Grant and husband, Dean, of Milledgeville, GA and Ed Muse and wife, Molly, of Macon, GA; 4 great grandchildren: Harrison and Bailey Grant and Beck and Matt Muse; a sister:  Madlyn Bailey of Burnsville; a niece: Carol Jones; and nephew:  Rodney Hensley.

 

Funeral Services will be held at 2 PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Rev. Pete Peterson will officiate.  Burial will be in the Jacks Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. 

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

BILL HALL

Bill Hall, 80, of Spruce Pine, passed away Monday September 20, 2010 at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital.  A native of Columbia SC, he was a US Army veteran and served in the Merchant Marines for 20 years.  Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Anglin Hall who died in 2009.

 

Surviving are two daughters, Helen Sue Hall of Spruce Pine and Angela Hall Dydasco of Huntington, IN and two grandsons, Charleston and Drayton Dydasco.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

WILLY NEAL

Willy Neal, 56, of Burnsville passed away unexpectedly, Saturday, September 18, 2010 at his home.  A native of West Virginia, he was a son of Stanley and Juanita Roberts Neal of West Virginia.  He was an employee of Parker Lumber Company.

 

Surviving in addition to his parents, are his wife, Brenda Deal Neal; 2 daughters:  Melissa Laws and Samantha Neal; and a grandson:  Jacob Laws all of Burnsville; and 11 brothers and sisters.

 

A private service was held at Parker Lumber Company.

CECIL WADE McCURRY

Cecil Wade McCurry, 69, of Green Mountain, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, September 15, 2010, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of Daisy Lockner McCurry of Green Mountain and the late Voyd McCurry.  He was preceded in death by a sister:  Anna Lou McCurry.  Cecil was a US Army Veteran.  He was a carpenter and farmer, and a loving husband, father and grandfather.

 

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 42 years:  Nora Peterson McCurry; a daughter:  Karen Morris and husband, Phillip, of Marion; a son:  Benny McCurry and wife, Tiffany, of Green Mountain; 5 grandchildren:  Joshua, Matthew and Benjamin Morris, and Sarah and Jacob McCurry; 3 brothers:  Craig McCurry of Asheville, and James McCurry and Kenneth McCurry of Green Mountain; and, 2 sisters:  Judy Barnett and Linda Hopson, both of Green Mountain.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Friday in North Bend Free Will Baptist Church, of which he was a member and treasurer.  Revs. Roger Laws, Dean Murphy and Junior Peterson will officiate.  Burial will be in Peterson Hill Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers are:  Clint Higgins, Martin Renfro, Kenneth Autrey, Danny Ayers, Gerald Peterson and Lynn Barnett.  Honorary pallbearers:  James McCurry, Kenneth McCurry and Owen Barnett; and grandsons:  Jacob McCurry and Joshua, Matthew and Benjamin Morris.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8PM Thursday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, where the body will remain until taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.
