VIDA ATKINS CARROLL

Vida Atkins Carroll, 79, of Sleepy Hollow Road in Burnsville, passed away Friday, July 9, 2010 at her home.  A native of Mitchell County, she was a daughter of the late Welzie and Lucy Gardner Atkins and the wife of Earl Carroll who died in 1965.  She was also preceded in death by brothers: Vernon, Von and Bernard Atkins.

 

Surviving are daughters:  Debbie Boone and husband, Rev. Dwight Boone, Jr., and Wanda Boone and husband, Gary, grandchildren: D. W. Boone and Shannon Anders and husband, Bobby; great granddaughters: Tara and Tegan Anders all of Burnsville; a sister:  Gladys Rathbone; brothers: Paul and Clarence Atkins all of Mitchell County and a host of nieces and nephews.

 

A private graveside service will be held in the Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.  Rev. Dwight Boone, Jr. will officiate. 

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 P. M. Sunday at Faith Baptist Church, Highway 197 North in Burnsville after the graveside service.

SHELBY GENE HIGGINS

Shelby Gene Higgins, 63, of Bill Allen Branch Road, passed away Thursday, July 8, 2010 in Blue Ridge Regional Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of Shelby and Edgel Bailey Higgins of Greeneville, TN.  He was preceded in death by a son, Justin Higgins.  Gene was a former employee of Glen Raven Mills of Burnsville.

 

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife of 30 years, Lila Blevins Higgins, a daughter:  Sherry Banks and husband, Marvin, of Burnsville; 2 granddaughters:  Alesha Norton and husband, Tucker, and Amanda Banks all of Burnsville; a brother:  Steven Higgins of Greeneville, TN; a sister:  Joyce Brannis of New Port News, VA.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.   A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday in the Academy Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 PM Friday prior to the service at the funeral home.

JAMES PARKER

James Parker, 58, of Burnsville went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of Merle Carroll Parker of Burnsville and the late Avery Parker.  He attended Browns Creek Missionary Baptist Church.  James was loved by all who knew him.

 

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are 4 sisters:  Mildred Hollifield and husband, Tommy, of Tallahassee, FL, Gabra Burris and husband, Gary, of Marion, Donna Gibson and husband, Carson, of Spruce Pine, Shelia Baldwin of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; 4 brothers:  Zeke Parker and wife, Doris, of Marion, Howard Parker and wife, Lillian, Jacky Parker, and Harlon Parker and wife, Cherie, all of Burnsville.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Charlie Carroway and Tony Laws will officiate.  Burial will be in the Carroway Cemetery.                          

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 PM Friday at the funeral home.  At other times, the family will be at the home of Harlon Parker in the South Toe Community.

WINNIE PEARL WILSON McKINNEY

Winnie Pearl Wilson McKinney, 78, of 70 Partner Lane in the Newdale Community went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, July 4, 2010 at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie “Bud” and Pearl Presnell Wilson and the beloved wife of S. D. McKinney, Jr. who passed away in 1999.  She was also preceded in death by a brother, Orin John Wilson.

 

Surviving are a daughter:  Marcia McKinney of the home; a son:  Tracy McKinney and wife, Vickie, of Abingdon, VA; 2 grandchildren:  Amber McKinney of Abingdon and Chad McKinney and wife, Cherry, of Newdale; a great grandchild:  Cheyenne McKinney; 2 step great grandchildren:  Payton and Ayden Middleton; a special niece:  Brenda Ledford and her family; a special nephew:  Kristian Huskins; sisters:  True Elliott and Faye Boone; brothers: Charles Wilson and wife, Juanita, and Frank Wilson; brother-in-law:  William Bill McKinney and wife, Helen, all of Burnsville, and a host of special nieces and nephews who are appreciated.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 PM Tuesday at Faith Fellowship Church.   Private funeral services will be held Wednesday.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The Revs. David Gillespie and Frank Wyatt will officiate.  Memorials may be made to James Project or Hospice of Yancey County.

MAE FISHER

Mae Blalock Fisher, 84, of Marion, VA, passed away Saturday, July 3, 2010 at Cannon Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Arthur A. and Florence Westall Patton.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, David L. Fisher; 2 sisters:  Essie Robinson and Erma Ball; a brother: Arthur Patton, Jr., and a granddaughter:  Amanda Fisher.

 

Surviving are her children:  Karen Hastings and husband, Jim, of Boone, Larry Blalock and wife, Joanne, of Charlotte, Dana Blalock and wife, Joy, of Troutman, and Denise Fisher of St. Clairsville, Ohio; 6 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home in Burnsville.  Burial will be in the Patton Cemetery.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

PAUL ALLEN

Paul Allen, 92, of Bakers Creek, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at Brookside Rehabilitation & Care.  A native of Madison County, he was a son of the late Clausel and Roxie Edney Allen, and the husband of Irene Anglin Allen who died in 2000.  They had been married for 60 years.  He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter: Mabel Irene; brothers:  Jeter, Clarence, Fred and Zenus Allen; and, sisters:  Vaughtie Wheeler, Blanche Metcalf, Vergie Hampton, Vivian Gardner, Lillie Dodd and Annie Foster.  Paul attended Bakers Creek Baptist Church, where he was a former Sunday School teacher and singing leader.  Paul had a family quartet “The Allen Family”, who sang together over 50 years.  He loved his Lord, family, church and had a host of friends.

 

Surviving are his son:  Preston Allen and wife, Phyllis; daughter:  Nina Hughes and husband, Johnny all of Burnsville; grandchildren:  Jeffrey, Anthony, Pam and Tami; great grandchildren:  Whitley, Chelsea, Nick, Andrea, Juliana and Finley; two step great grandchildren:  Jason and Sam; and three great, great step grandchildren:  Kilee, Cloey, and Cane.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Friday in Bakers Creek Baptist Church.  The Rev. Royce Ball will officiate.  Burial will follow in the Charlie Anglin Family Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Thursday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, where the body will remain until taken to the church to lie in state one hour prior to the service.

IRENE ROBINSON MARSH

Irene Robinson Marsh, 98, of Micaville, went Home Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at Mountain Manor.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Doshia Silvers Robinson.  She was the wife of the late James Marsh.  A daughter, Shirley Marsh, and a great grandson, Mark McMahan, preceded her in death.  Irene was a member of Micaville Presbyterian Church.  She retired from the Yancey County School system as Manager of Micaville Elementary Lunchroom.

 

Surviving are 4 children:  Bobby Marsh, Janice Grove, Jim Marsh and wife, Sue, all of Micaville, and Charlene Ray and husband, Tommy, of Old Fort; 7 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and, a great, great granddaughter.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Pete Peterson will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Saturday in Holcombe Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7PM Friday prior to the service at the funeral home.

BONNIE MAY ROGERS THOMAS

Bonnie May Rogers Thomas, 85, of Burnsville passed away Sunday, June 27, 2010 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late George and Julia Jones Hall and wife of Edward Rogers who died in 1967 and Walker Thomas who died in 1989.  She was also preceded in death by her son, Jerry Rogers.  She was a retired employee of Belks Department Store in Spruce Pine.  Bonnie was a member of Pleasant Gap Baptist Church.

 

She is survived by aunts: Edna Jones of Burnsville, Thula Sparks of Micaville and Viola Robinson of Green Mountain; several cousins and Sabrina Burleson who called her Grandma.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Steve Grindstaff and B. G. McMahan will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday in the Fred Young Cemetery at Pleasant Gap.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

ROBERT WHITSON, JR.

Robert Whitson, Jr., 81, of Green Mountain, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, June 24, 2010, after an extended illness.  He was born in Unicoi County, Tennessee.  Robert was a son of the late Robert and Violet Gillis Whitson.  He was the husband of Wanda Blease King Whitson who died in 2003.  He was also preceded in death by a daughter:  Nancy Whitson; and, a brother:  Rassie Whitson.  Robert was a U.S. Air Force Veteran and member of North Bend Free Will Baptist Church, where he served as Treasurer until his health declined.

 

Surviving are 2 sons:  Steve Whitson and wife, Billie Jean, of Burnsville and David Whitson and wife, Saundra, of Hudson, NC; 2 daughters:  Debra Deyton and husband, Rodney, and Lisa Barker and husband, Danny, all of Bristol, TN; 12 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 4 sisters:  Ruby Letterman and Rita Honeycutt of Burnsville, Ruth Mosley of Perry Hall, MD and Rosetta Walsh of Elizabethton, TN; and, 3 brothers:  Ralph Whitson of Ft. Meyers, FL, and Bill and Ray Whitson of Taylorsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Blaine Whitson and Derek Whitson will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Saturday in Peterson Hill Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Friday at the funeral home.

VICKIE DIANE TOWE

Vickie Diane Towe, 54, of the Bolens Creek Community, passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at St. Joseph Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Roy and Chloe Deyton Bennett.  She was preceded in death by her daughter, Kelly Diana Towe.  Vickie was a former Veterinarian Technician with Morris Animal Clinic and Burnsville Veterinarian Clinic.

 

Surviving are her devoted son, Jody Dwight Towe; a sister:  Sandy Hilemon and husband, Maurice; a sister-by-heart:  Kay McLaughlin; an aunt and uncle:  Yvonne and Willie Bennett; and aunt:  Velma Harding all of Burnsville; loyal cousins:  Jeff and Darla Harding of Spruce Pine; her constant companion, Eddy; and the father of her children:  Dwight Towe and wife, Janie, of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Vernon Buchanan and Jameson Harding will officiate.  Burial will be in the Miller Cemetery on Bolens Creek.  Serving as pallbearers:  Jeff Harding, Jeffrey Harding, Maurice Hilemon, Darrell Deyton, Carly Laws, Buster Deyton, John Bennett and Mike Deyton.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.  At other times, the family will be at the home of Willie and Yvonne Bennett on Sunset Drive.
