TOM L. WILSON

Tom L. Wilson, 90, of Pensacola, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, January 20, 2010, at John F. Keever Solace Center.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Ewart and Essie Ray Wilson, and the husband of Ruth Gunter Wilson who died in 1976.  He was a World War II Army Veteran.

 

Surviving are a sister:  Virginia Boone; a brother:  Ned Wilson and wife, Marjorie, all of Burnsville; and, several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 6PM Friday in Pensacola United Methodist Church, of which he was a member.  The Revs. A. J. Moore and Bradley Boone will officiate.  Entombment will be in Spruce Pine Mausoleum.  Pallbearers will be Terry Wilson, Wayne Atkins, Ronald Fox, Nolan Harris, Jerome Blankenship and Jerry Wilson.  Honorary pallbearers will be David Boone and Mike Wilson.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pensacola United Methodist Church, Laurel Branch Baptist Church or Pensacola Free Will Baptist Church.

OTTIS HYLEMON

Ottis Hylemon, 71, of Sang Branch, passed away Thursday, January 21, 2010 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of Lige and Gladys Higgins Hylemon of Burnsville.  He was preceded in death by a son, Roger Hylemon and a brother, Kenneth Hylemon.  He was a retired carpenter.

 

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are 3 daughters: Anita Brown, Sandra Morgan and Denise Burleson; 2 sons: Johnny and Noel Hylemon; 6 sisters:  Rosa Lee Peters of Nebo, Alma Radford, Barbara Robinson, Betty Robinson, Robin Hylemon and Carolyn Smith all of Glen Alpine; 2 brothers: Evert Hylemon of Burnsville and Creed Hylemon of Lincolnton, and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be at 2 P.M. Sunday in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.   Pastor Jerry Shelton will officiate.  Burial will be in the Proffitt Cemetery on Elk Shoal Creek.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

LAWRENCE GRINDSTAFF

Lawrence Grindstaff, 89, of Big Brush Creek, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, January 15, 2010, at Asheville VA Medical Center.  A native of Mitchell County, he was a son of the late Will and Martha Roberts Grindstaff.  He was also preceded in death by 5 sisters, 3 brothers and 2 sons-in-law.

 

Surviving are his wife of 70 years:  Lockie Miller Grindstaff; children:  Arlene Ray and husband, Charles, J. R. Grindstaff, Gary Grindstaff and wife, Sherry, and Earl Grindstaff and wife, Karen, all of Burnsville, Natalie Harris and husband, Dennis, of Lenoir and Sue Willmott of Asheville; grandchildren:  Denise Doucette and husband, William, Pam Moore and husband, Fred, Pat Bramlett and husband, Kevin, Angie Fineberg and husband Kevin, Heather Turner and husband, William, Collin Willmott and wife, Sarah, Eric Grindstaff and wife, Crystal, Benjamin Grindstaff and wife, Ashley, and Caleb Grindstaff; great grandchildren:  Harris and Carlton Bassett, Jarod and Emily Wood, Jeremy Bramlett, Lawrence Grindstaff and Maggie Willmott; 2 sisters:  Christine Gortney and Betty Goodwin, and a brother:  Arvel Grindstaff, all of Bakersville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 4PM Sunday in Red Hill Baptist Church, of which he was a member.  The Rev. Randy Wise will officiate.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 2 until 4PM prior to the service at the church.

ALMA LAWS PRESNELL

Alma Laws Presnell, 81, of Burnsville, passed away Thursday, January 7, 2010.  A native of Yancey County, she was the daughter of the late Emory and Mary Robinson Laws.  She was also preceded in death by a brother:  Billy Laws.  Alma was a member of Newdale Presbyterian Church.

 

Surviving are her husband of 55 years:  Harold Presnell; son:  Alan Presnell and wife, Debbie, of Black Mountain; daughter:  Sharon Morgan and husband, Michael, of Weaverville; brother:  Jack Laws of Burnsville; 5 grandchildren:  Meredith, Kaitlin, Alexis, Julianne and Will; and, a great grandchild:  Lanie.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Rev. Mike Brazelle will officiate.  Burial will be in the Newdale Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 1 until 2:30 P.M. prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

The family would like to thank the staff of Brookside Rehabilitation & Care for their tender care of our Mother.  Also, a special thanks to Jean Phillips, a dear friend and family member.

ROBERT J. PROFFITT

Robert J. Proffitt, 69, of Micaville, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, January 2, 2010 at the Brian Center of Weaverville.  A native of Madison County, he was a son of the late Coby and Dicie Shelton Proffitt.  He was also preceded in death by brothers Kermit, Wayne and Benny Proffitt.  Robert was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, a retired employee of Ball-Incon and Henredon Furniture.   “Pop” was an avid fisherman.

 

Surviving are his wife of 18 years:  Doris Freeman Proffitt; children:  Michelle Proffitt of Alexander, Jerome Proffitt of Durham and Stephanie Cox and husband Curtis of Fayetteville; step children:  Gail Edmonds and husband Tony of Weaverville, David Higgins and wife Pam and Donna Hoover and husband Tony, all of Burnsville; 2 brothers:  Ernest Proffitt of Greeneville, TN. and S.B. Proffitt of SC., 6 grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren and 6 step great grandchildren.

 

Funeral Services will be held at 2 PM Monday in the Liberty Hill Baptist Church, of which he was a member.  Pastors David Philbeck and GE Freeman will officiate.  Burial will be in the Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

S C HUGHES

S. C. Hughes, 86, of Burnsville went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday December 29, 2009 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Noah and Rebecca Renfro Hughes.  He was also preceded in death by his wife Jessie Cooper Hughes who died in 1960, six sisters and two brothers:  Ernest Hughes and S. C.'s twin brother,  O. B. Hughes.  

 

Surviving are his wife: Thula Jones Hughes; step son: Gordon Higgins and wife Donna, of Burnsville; children:  Martha and Doug Taylor of Hickory, Sandra and Dan Oswald of Harrisburg, NC, Donnie and Brenda Hughes of Roan Mountain, TN, Curtis and Dawn Hughes of Spruce Pine, Louie Hughes of Greensboro and Christie and Bryan Rocha of Burnsville; a sister:  Nora Buchanan and husband Howard of Green Mountain;  7 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. 

 

Funeral Services will be held at 2 PM Friday in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs.  Roger Thompson, Keith Miller and Noah Hughes will officiate.  Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery at Horton Hill.

FRANCIS B. ANGLIN

Francis B. Anglin, 84, of the Cane River Community, died Saturday, December 26, 2009, at the home of his daughter, Laura Lynn Anglin Hensley.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Willie and Eura McPeters Anglin, and the husband of Mary Emma Riddle Anglin who died in 1987.  He was also preceded in death by 2 brothers:  Arnold and Elzie Anglin.  Francis was a World War II US Navy Veteran and a retired dairyman.

 

Surviving are his daughter:  Laura Lynn Anglin Hensley and husband, Eric; a granddaughter:  Kristin Mary Hensley; a sister:  Mary Emilie Wilson and husband, Frank, of Burnsville; two brothers:  Bob Anglin and wife, June, of Burnsville, Jim Anglin and wife, Carlene, of Weaverville; a sister-in-law:  Hope Anglin of Burnsville; and, Shelby Hensley of Adams Run, SC.  He also leaves two very special people:  Kathleen Young and Johnny Banks, whom he loved very much.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11AM Tuesday in Cane River Baptist Church, of which he was a member.  The Rev. Shane Cassida will officiate.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8PM Monday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, and at other times the family will be at the home of his daughter.

LARRY NELSON RIDDLE, JR.

Larry Nelson Riddle, 42, of Etowah, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Wednesday, December 23, 2009, at his home.  A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Larry Nelson Riddle, Sr. and Edna Jean Concato.  He was preceded in death by his wife:  Triscia Crum Riddle; and, mother-in-law:  Hope Holden.  Larry was the owner and operator of Riddle Enterprises.  He was a member of Anchor Baptist Church.  Larry was a loving and devoted father and fiancé, uncle and friend.

 

Surviving are two sons:  Hunter and Benjamin; his fiancée:  Linda Davis of the home; his brother:  Darrell Riddle of Edneyville; stepfather:  Richard “Dick” Concato of Arden; father-in-law:  Tommy Holden of Balsam; an aunt:  Susie Riddle of Shelby; and, numerous other family members and friends.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11AM Thursday, December 31, 2009, in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Rev. DeWayne Whittimore will officiate.  Burial will be in Higgins Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Wednesday at the funeral home.

RICHARD PETERSON

Richard Peterson, 90, of Burnsville, passed away Wednesday, December 23, 2009.  A native of Yancey County he was a son of the late Guss and Ida Adkins Peterson, and husband of Agnes Howell Peterson who died in 2005.  He graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College in 1939 and taught school at White Oak Flats in 1940.  Following this he served in the U.S. Army until 1945.  Richard married Agnes Howell in 1945, taught school in Burnsville before entering the U.S. Postal Service in 1949, and retired in 1974.  He was a member of First Baptist Church of Burnsville.

 

Surviving are 3 daughters:  Gay Borland of Port Orange, FL, Iris Anne Leong of Virginia Beach, VA, and Joan Clark of Reidsville, NC; 2 grandsons:  Stephen Leong of Ft. Hood, TX and Scott Clark of Lakeland, FL; a sister:  Nelda Wilson and husband, Bob, of Burnsville; and, 2 brothers:  Ronald Peterson and wife, Carol, of Gretna, VA and Reid Peterson and wife, Gini, of Stone Mountain, GA.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Rev. Richard Muri will officiate.  Burial will be in Academy Hill Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

CLARENCE MORROW

Clarence Morrow, 84, of Silvers Gap Road, passed away Wednesday, December 23, 2009, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Tom and Dollie Jane Silvers Morrow.  Clarence was a WWII Navy Veteran.  He worked for 11 years in the Newport News, VA shipbuilding and dry dock, and retired from Siding, Inc. after 20 years.  Clarence was preceded in death by brothers:  Clay, John, Joe, Laskie, Hansle, Breece and Kenneth Morrow; and, sisters:  Kathryn Hylemon and Ophia Deackins; and, a grandson:  Isaac Guinn.

 

Surviving are his wife of 61 years:  Delia Silvers Morrow; children:  Joe Clarence Morrow and Sarah Morrow of the home, Deanna Robinson and husband, Dean, Shirley Mae Guinn and husband, Martin, Donna Ruth Adkins and husband, Doyle, all of Burnsville, and Theodore Morrow and wife, Janet, of Unicoi, TN; 8 grandchildren; 6 great grandsons; and, a sister:  Mable Fox of Shelby.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Rev. Allison Robinson will officiate.  Burial will be in the Clarence Morrow Cemetery on Silvers Gap Road.
