DENNIS RAY ROBINSON

Dennis Ray Robinson, 58, of Soddy Daisy, TN, deceased Monday, December 21, 2009.  A native of Burnsville, NC, he was a son of Helen Honeycutt Robinson of Burnsville and the late Rex Robinson.  He owned and operated Upholstery by Dennis in Chattanooga, TN.  Dennis was an avid deer hunter, outdoorsman and very much family oriented.

 

Surviving are his wife of 39 years:  Michele “Shelly” Robinson; 3 children:  Dennis Robinson, Jr. of Soddy Daisy, Misty Moon and husband, Shay, of Hixson, TN and Daniel Robinson and wife, Rachel, of Chattanooga; 3 grandchildren:  Brendan Robinson, Kenadie Robinson and Price Robinson; 2 brothers:  Charles Robinson and Lynn Robinson; and, 2 sisters:  Lorraine Allison and Debbie Kiraga.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Wednesday, December 30, 2009, in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Rev. Bill Ponder will officiate.  Burial will be in the Honeycutt Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Tuesday at the funeral home and from 12 until 2PM Wednesday prior to the service.

BERTHA RIDDLE ELKINS

Bertha Riddle Elkins, 85, of the Prices Creek Community went home to be with her Heavenly Father, Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at Madison Manor.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Will and Lizzie Jones Riddle.  She was the wife of Tom Elkins who died in 2000.  She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Kay Austin, 3 sisters and a brother.  Bertha was a member of Prices Creek Union Baptist Church.  She loved working in her flowers and cooking for her family.

 

Surviving are a son, Ben Elkins and wife, Marvelene; a daughter; Rita Edwards and husband, Daniel, all of Burnsville; 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Ricky Bennett and Philip Garland will officiate.  Burial will be in the Elkins Family Cemetery on Prices Creek.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

CHARLOTTE A. COE

Charlotte Alvina Coe, formerly of Burnsville, passed away Monday, December 21, 2009, in Mt. Pleasant, SC.  She was born February 10, 1922 in Chicago, IL.  Charlotte was a daughter of the late Adolf and Alvina Hackertt Schumann. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Herman Luther Coe, who passed away in 1991.

 

Surviving are a son:  Randall W. Coe of St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands; three daughters:  Jeanette Underwood of La Follette, TN, Carol Blackstock of Littleton, CO and Diana Roberts of Mt. Pleasant, SC; 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and, one great great grandchild.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, December 28, 2009, at the First Baptist Church in Burnsville, where she was a member and sang in the choir.  Rev. Richard Muri will officiate.  Burial will follow in Academy Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

NINA HONEYCUTT WHEELER

Nina Honeycutt Wheeler, 62, of Burnsville went peacefully to spend Christmas with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, December 21, 2009.  Nina was the daughter of the late Mack and Grace Robinson Honeycutt.

 

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Jerry Wheeler; daughter:  Angie Swartz and husband, Eric, of Burnsville; son:  David Wheeler and wife Sonya, of Spruce Pine; five grandchildren:  Randi Miller and fiancée, Daniel Edwards of Green Mountain, Megan Steinel and husband, Jason, of Canton, Hagen, Jared and Dawson Wheeler of Spruce Pine;  a great grandchild:  Emily Edwards of Green Mountain; sister:  Maxine Cooper and husband, Alan, of Roseland, Florida; brothers:  Stanley Honeycutt and wife, Debbie, of Spruce Pine, Bennie Honeycutt and wife, Alice, of Burnsville; several nieces and nephews and a very special mother-in-law:  Katherine Wheeler of Spruce Pine.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Roger Thompson, Joe Bennett and Darrin Waldroup will officiate.  Burial will be in Young’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from Noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

NANCY BROWN HOLCOMBE

Nancy Brown Holcombe, 69, of Burnsville, went home to be with her Heavenly Father, Saturday, December 19, 2009 at her home.  A native and lifelong resident of Burnsville, she was a daughter of the late Charles Lee and Laura Banks Brown.  She was preceded in death by a sister, Pearl Banks and brother-in-law, Boyd Banks.  Nancy loved her family, friends and caring for and serving others.  Her kindness, smile and love for humor will be missed by all who knew her.  Nancy’s life was her church, her family and friends. 

 

Surviving are her husband of 51 years, Jerry Holcombe; son: Bobby and wife, Sandra, of Burnsville; daughter: Laura Huneycutt and husband, Gordon, of Stanfield; 5 grandchildren:  Jason Holcombe, Cortney Taylor and husband, Philip, Josh Huneycutt, Roxanne Huneycutt and Alexis Holcombe; 2 great-granddaughters:  Kylie and Keely Taylor; a sister: Freida Bryson and husband, Hale, of Shelby; 2 brothers:  Bob Brown and wife, Nora Belle, and Andy Brown and wife, Wanda; and 3 special nephews who were more like brothers:  Chip, Mike and David Banks all of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday in West Burnsville Baptist Church of which she was an active member.  Pastors Ricky Ray and Harold Bennett, Jr. will officiate.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home where the body will remain until taken to the church to lie in state thirty minutes prior to the service.

RAY CARSON McCOURRY

Ray Carson McCourry, 85, of Johns Island, SC passed into the hands of his Lord on Friday, December 11, 2009.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Euphrates and Rosa McCourry.  He was also preceded in death by his brother, James McCourry and a sister, Ruth Hills.  He graduated from Clearmont High School in 1940 and enlisted in the Army Air Corps.  He was assigned to Pearl Harbor at the time of the bombings that led to WWII.  During his military career, he was assigned to Greenland, Newfoundland, England and Germany and several bases in the United States as well.  He retired as a Chief Master Sergeant and then had a 12 year career in the Civil Service.  Ray was a life member of the Air Force Sergeant’s Association, the Pearl Harbor Survivor Association, the VFW and the DAV.  He held offices in both AFSA and PHSA and was very active in both groups.  One of Ray’s many interests was watching things grow.  He was the caretaker of many flowers, shrubs, and trees.  He loved to nurture tiny seedlings to mature plants.  He was always willing to help family and friends regardless of the project.  Ray was respected and loved by all who met him, and will be missed by more people that we can list.

 

Surviving are his wife of 59 happy years, Virginia Winger McCourry, daughters:  Susan Traher (Tom), Peggy Van De Leest (Dean), and Judy Kinard (Dean); grandchildren:  Amanda, Matthew and Ryan Van De Leest, Sarah Kastner (Reed), Abby Remington (Ty), Nathan Kinard,; and a great grandchild:  Caroline Grace Kastner; brother:  Fletcher McCourry and a sister:  Eileen Peterson.  There are many more nieces and nephews that cannot be named that are much cherished.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Philip Garland will officiate.  Burial will be in the Peterson-McCourry Family Cemetery on Pound Mill Road with military graverites by Sgt. E. L. Randolph, Chapter 57 DAV.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.

PETER BURFORD

Peter Burford, 70, of the Bald Mountain Community passed away Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at his home.  Peter loved his grandchildren, loved to go fishing, drive race cars and had a kind heart.  He was a U.S. Army Veteran.

 

Surviving are his loving wife of 45 years, Judy Burford; a son: Paul Burford and wife, Angela; and two grandchildren:  Alex and Katherine all of Barnardsville; a sister:  Yvonne Michael and husband, Roy Bell, of Concord and 2 brothers:  Terry Burford and family of Burnsville and Raymond Burford and wife, Ros, and family of Florida.

 

A funeral service will be held at 5:00 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Jerry Shelton will officiate.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

DORIS ELKINS TABOR

Doris Elkins Tabor of Burnsville passed away Sunday, December 6, 2009.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Theodore and Francis Austin Elkins.  She was preceded in death by her daughter, Pam Eggers and brothers:  Carnel and Eddie Arnold Elkins.  Doris was a retired nurse.

 

Surviving are her husband, V. T. Tabor; a son, Tim Tabor and wife, Donna, 6 grandchildren:  Caleb, Hillary, J.P., Allie, Braeden and Carter Tabor all of Burnsville; brothers:  Pritchard Elkins, Ward Elkins, Vearl Elkins, and Farrell Elkins of Burnsville, Leon Elkins of Statesville and Carroll Elkins of Seneca, SC; 2 sisters:  Dornetta Elkins of Asheville and Connie Elkins of Spruce Pine and a special friend:  Earline Robinson of Burnsville.

 

A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday in Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church.  Rev. Stacey Elkins will officiate.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

CAROLYN ANN SPENCE BRIGGS

Carolyn Ann Spence Briggs, 66, of Micaville, formerly of Chester, SC, passed away Sunday December 6, 2009.  A native of Chester she was a daughter of the late Hugh and Pinkie Jourdan Spence.  She was also preceded in death by sisters:  Helen Gibson and Margaret Mishau.  Carolyn was retired from Springs Industries, where she worked in the Industrial Engineering Department at the Catherine plant in Chester.

 

Surviving are her loving husband of 49 years:  James Wess Briggs; a son:  Spencer Anderson Briggs and wife, Anne Carnes Briggs; and, 3 grandsons:  Wess, Jesse and Trace Briggs, all of Lancaster, SC; and, a sister: Mary Spence Smith of Chester.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday in the Bowditch Baptist Church, of which she was a member.  The Rev. Ronnie Whitson will officiate.  Burial will be in the Pete Young Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Tuesday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, where the body will remain until taken to the church to lie in state thirty minutes prior to the service. 

G. D. ROBINSON

G. D. Robinson, 82, of the Mine Fork Community, passed away Wednesday, December 2, 2009.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Melvin and Zelda Elkins Robinson.  He was a retired employee of the N. C. Department of Transportation and a member of Green Mountain Free Will Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are his wife of 59 years:  Maphra Fox Robinson; children:  Benna Davenport and husband, Richard, Cathy Beaver and husband, Herman, and Darrell Robinson, all of Burnsville, Anna Winters and husband, Arnold, of Spruce Pine, and Harold Robinson and wife, Gail, of Boone; a brother:  George Robinson, and 3 sisters:  Maude Bradley, June Rhodes and Stella Fox, all of Weaverville.  G. D. had 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren who were very special to him.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 P.M. Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Rev. Steve Penland will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday in the McCracken Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 P.M. prior to the service at the funeral home.
