GURNEY BREWER

Gurney Brewer, age 71, of Tucson, AZ and formerly of Burnsville, died January 22, 2016. He passed at home with his wife and soul mate of 51 years, Norma Silvers Brewer, by his side. He fought a long battle with the lung disease Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Better known to many as “Dad,” “Gurn,” “Pappy,” “Pap,” and “one of The Hillbillies,” he was very blessed to experience his dream of retiring, following the sun, sleeping late, traveling, fishing, and making many friends along the way! He was known for putting others first, possessing a great work ethic, being a wholehearted gentleman, boasting a quick wit and wonderful sense of humor, particularly when recalling stories about his wife, or fishing.

Gurney would also pepper stories and conversations with terms from what we called the “Book of Gurn”, an ongoing collection of words, expressions, and metaphors crafted by him. We created this document years ago as an attempt to capture his brilliant humor and talent as hysterical wordsmith. Of course we mercifully teased him about this!

Gurney had so many friends; many in Gunnison, Colorado where he and Norma spent their summers fishing, and in Tucson, Arizona, where they resided in a wonderful community, the Western Way RV Resort.  It is there that so many of us have become like family, and a sincere ‘thank you’ goes to everyone who has loved and supported us during Gurney’s sickness.  In particular, a special ‘thank you’ to “Our Angel Friend,” Katie Peterson, who stayed by our sides through Dad’s final days; joy, peace, comfort, love, prayers, tears, and hugs abounded during this very special time of togetherness.

Gurney’s remaining family, in addition to his wife, includes: Son Tim Brewer and  wife Tracy, of Newland, and grandson Brandon, of Carbondale, IL, Son Jeff Brewer and wife Beth,  grandsons Bryan and Trevor, and granddaughter Brooke, all of Bakersville;  two sisters: Jane Allen and her husband Ken, of Burnsville and Eloise Harding and husband JC, of Green Mountain; and brother Henry Brewer and wife Leslie, of Spruce Pine.  Gurney was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Pauline Geouge Brewer, and four brothers: Frank, Julian, Bill, and Ben.

Lastly, we would like to extend sincere gratitude to Casa de la Luz Hospice in Tucson, Arizona for their exceptional care, love, and support during this difficult time.

Gurney and Norma’s home is open anytime for any and all family and friends to share in celebrating his life, with a hug, some laughter, or a few stories.

No flowers are requested; instead, please honor a loved one by doing something special for them!  A private family celebration of Dad/Pappy/Gurn’s life will be held at a later date, and his ashes will be spread at a “special fishing hole” that he and Norma loved.

Gurney truly had a wonderful trip until the very end!
