NORA GILBERT

Nora Gilbert, 95, of The Villages, Florida, passed away Saturday, October 3, 2015 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care in Burnsville.  A native of Laurens, SC, she was a daughter of the late James C. and Cora Cannon and the wife of the late Floyd I. Gilbert.

Surviving are her son: Kenneth Gilbert of Burnsville and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced at a later date.

ROSE MARY HALL RIDDLE

Rose Mary Hall Riddle, 68, of Forest Hills Drive, Burnsville, passed on to be with her Savior Tuesday, September 29, 2015, after an extended illness.A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Charles Victor and Mary Elizabeth Davis Hall.  She was the wife of Dallas Junior Riddle who died in 2002.  She was also preceded in death by a sister:  Martha Rathburn; brothers:  John Hugh Hall, Curtis Robinson and Homer Robinson; and, a grandson:  Dorian Alexander Foreman.  She loved her Lord and Savior.

 

Surviving are 3 children:  Gina Harris and husband, Wayne, Ricky Foreman and Opal R. Buchanan and Shane J. Riddle and wife, Rhoda, all of Burnsville; 8 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law:  Rexie Riddle and Barbara Riddle; and, brother-in-law:  Donald Riddle, of Burnsville.  Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.   Rev. Powell Young will officiate.  Burial will be in the Laurel Branch Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from Noon until 2PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

HUBERT BROOKS ELKINS

Hubert B. Elkins, 77, of Indian Creek went home to be with the Lord, Monday, September 28, 2015 at Mission Hospitals Memorial Campus. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Creed and Amanda Hudgins Elkins.  He was also preceded in death by sons:  Stanley and Timothy Elkins; grandson:  Jessie Bailey; son-in-law:  Norman Bailey and brothers:  Roscoe and Zenus Elkins. 

 

Surviving are his wife of 58 years:  Alice McPeters Elkins; a son:  Gerald Elkins and wife, Carolyn, of Burnsville; daughters:  Janet Morrow and husband, Theodore, of Unicoi, Tn, Kathy Annas and husband, Marc, of Lenoir and Becky Bailey, of Bakersville; grandchildren:  Jarrett, Joshua, Amber, Jennifer, Thomas, Laura, Andrew, Landon, Jeremiah, and Evey; 4 sisters:  Avie Pendergrass and Lila Elkins, of Valdese, Goldie Allen, of Hendersonville, and Marilyn Maney of Burnsville; a brother:  Calvin Elkins and wife, Faye, of Burnsville.

 

A graveside service will be held at 11AM Wednesday in Red Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.  A Memorial service will be held at 11:30 AM Wednesday, in Red Hill Baptist Church, of which he was a faithful member and Deacon. Rev. Randy Wise will officiate.

PATSY GRIFFITH HENSON

Patsy Griffith Henson, 66, of Forest Hills Drive, Burnsville, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, September 26, 2015, at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late George Lee Griffith and Elizabeth Patton Griffith Young, and the wife of Drennon Henson who died in 1993.  She was also preceded in death by sisters: Sally Williams and Donnelle Williamson.

Surviving are a daughter: Jackie Shade and husband Joey; a granddaughter: Jena Shade; grandsons: Darel Wilson and wife Brittney and Joseph Shade, and a great granddaughter: Brylee Wilson all of Burnsville; a sister: Rowena Griffith of Asheville and a host of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 5 PM Friday, October 2, 2015 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Richard Blanton and William Whiteside will officiate.

CHARLES 'CHUCK' ROLAND

Charles 'Chuck' Roland, 85, of Pensacola, passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2015, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Lake B. and Agnus Rocket Roland, and the husband of Vivian Whittington Roland, who died in 1993.  He was also preceded in death by a daughter: Rebecca Spray; a son: Anthony Roland;  a sister:  “Bib” Roberts; and brothers: Gail, Richard and Daniel Roland.  After his retirement, Chuck worked with the Older American Program of the U S Forest Service.

Surviving are his wife: Monita Williams Roland; three daughters: Margie Cortimilia and husband, Rich, of Chesapeake, VA, Sharaon DiPasquale of Beaufort, SC and Marcia Young of Burnsville; two sisters: Esther Edwards of Ohio and Lucille McMahan of Burnsville; two brothers: Ellis Roland and wife, Alfie, of Cleveland, OH and J. B. Roland and wife, Debbie, of Burnsville;  6 grandchildren: Marshall, Monica, Angie, Kelly, Malory & Morgan; 4 great grandchildren: Dante, Damion, Oliva and Nelia; and 8 step great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P. M. Saturday, September 26, 2015 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Ray Strickland will offficiate. Burial will follow in the Lake Roland Family Cemetery at Pensacola.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

ELSIE LAWS THOMAS

Elsie Laws Thomas, 99, of the Bowditch Community, went home to be with the Lord Monday, September 21, 2015, at her home, surrounded by her family.  A native of Swain County, she was a daughter of the late Wes and Martha Hughes Laws and the wife of Rev. Casie Thomas, who died in 1992.  She was also preceded in death by sons Ernest Thomas and Eugene Thomas, grandsons: Glen Harold Cody, Jr, Jeffrey Thomas and Patrick Thomas; three sisters and six brothers. She enjoyed her flowers and quilting.  Elsie was a dedicated pastor’s wife and mother.

Surviving are her children: Marshall Thomas and wife Marlene of Kingsport, TN; Lessie Cook and husband Harry of Maryville, TN; Jim Thomas and wife Brenda of Cape Coral, FL, Bernice Metcalf and fiancé Bob of Mars Hill; Louise Dockery and husband Doyle of Marion; Bill Thomas and wife Joan of Fort Meyers, FL; Christine Morgan and husband Mike of Enka/Candler and Larry Thomas and wife Cindy of Burnsville; daughters-in-law: Nellie Thomas of Hickory and Pat Thomas of Burnsville; 27 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren, 44 great-great grandchildren, 4 great-great-great grandchildren; two granddaughters she and Casie raised: Diane Silvers and husband William of Micaville and A. J. Midura and husband Allen of Winston Salem; and special friends: Queen Faulkner, Linda Burleson and Jeannie Parmelee..

Funeral services will be held at 2 P. M. Friday in Bowditch Union Church, of which she was a member.  Revs. Blaine Whitson, Ronnie Whitson and grandson Ray Thomas will officiate.  Burial will be in the Casie Thomas Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 P.M. Thursday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, where the body will remain until taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.

MICHAEL RICHARD HERMAN

Michael Richard Herman, 61, of Mountain View Apartments, went to be with the Lord on September 6, 2015.  He was a faithful attendee of West Burnsville Baptist Church and a dedicated man to the Lord.  He had been part of the congregation for 7 years.  Through his journey in life, he touched many people  for  the Lord.  He loved his cat Kumba-Too, his family, friends and church family. 

 

Surviving are his brother:  Joel V. Herman, and his family, of Vero Beach, Florida; a sister-in-law:  Florence Oakowsky, of Murphy; a cousin: Greg Kemp of Massillion, Ohio, and his former wife:  Christine Herman, of Stuart, Florida.

 

A memorial service will be held at 2PM Friday September 25th at West Burnsville Baptist Church.  Pastor Charlie Carroway will officiate.

ALMA RIDDLE

Alma McPeters Riddle, 86, of Burnsville went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care in Burnsville.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Samie and Lena Ray McPeters and wife of Joseph Buster Riddle, who died in 1960.  She was also preceded in death by an infant brother Robert.  Alma was a former member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years.

 

Surviving are a daughter:  Wanda Harding and husband, Wade;  a granddaughter:  Shannon Raines and husband, Deven; great grandchildren:  Skylar, Shaylea and Slayden Raines, all of Burnsville;  two brothers:  Bacchus McPeters and wife, Evelyn,  of Mars Hill and Wayne McPeters and wife, Glenda, of  Barnardsville; brothers-in-law:  Glenn Riddle and wife, Jean, of Marion; Ben Riddle and wife, Jeannette of Morganton; sisters-in-law:  Virginia Riddle of Valdese, Barbara Riddle and Nancy Riddle of Morganton and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Saturday, at West Burnsville Baptist Church, of which she was a member.  Pastor Charlie Carroway and Rev. Ricky Ray will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 3:30PM Saturday at Shepherd Memorial Park in Hendersonville.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

EUGENE BAKER

Eugene Baker, 82, of Asheville, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, September 12, 2015, at his home. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Hugh and Pauline Wilson Baker.  He was also preceded in death by a son:  Jerry Edward Baker; and a brother:  Mickey Baker.  Eugene was a US Army Korean War Veteran, and a retired employee of Bowman Transportation with 28 years service.  He attended Grassy Branch Baptist Church.  Eugene enjoyed camping, his golf cart “Therapy” and gardening.

 

Surviving are his wife:  Lillian Murphy Baker; a daughter:  Jeanna Page and husband, Jimmy of Asheville; grandchildren:  Michael Page and wife, Lara, of Fairview, and Matthew Baker of Asheville; 2 great grandchildren:  Chloe and Christopher Page; a sister:  Milidene Wilson and husband, Paul, of Burnsville; a brother: Roger Baker and wife, Jolene, of Charlotte and neighbors who are special angels: Dan and Donna Carter of Asheville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Jimmy Page and Ken Sausedo will officiate.  A graveside service will held at 11AM Tuesday in the Baker Family Cemetery on Bakers Creek.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

ELEANOR BARHAM HIGGINS

Eleanor Barham Higgins, 87, of Burnsville, died on September 10, 2015.  She passed away peacefully and is now in the arms of her Lord.  She was born in Johnston County, NC on March 16, 1928 to the late W. T. and Mae C. Barham.  She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother:  W. Thomas Barham; and a sister:  Helen Barham Vinson.  Eleanor graduated from Archer Lodge High School in 1943 and attended Atlantic Christian College in Wilson.  She was an excellent seamstress and tailored clothes for her family and many others.  Eleanor taught elementary education for many years.  She then worked with the State of North Carolina at the Employment Security Commission.  Later she worked at N. C. State University before retiring.  In addition to being a wonderful wife and mother, she was an adored grandmother and great grandmother.

 

Surviving are her husband:  Horace Higgins, Jr. of the home; daughter:  Diane Reaves and husband, Brad, of Raleigh; and her granddaughters:  Toni Hildebrand and husband, Harold Herman, of Knightdale and Kelly Vetter and husband, Brian, of Garner.  Her adored great grandchildren are:  Blake Hildebrand and Kyle and Ashley Vetter; a sister:  Annettie Steed and husband, Levi, of Raleigh; sister-in-law:  Dorothy Barham of Lillington; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3 PM Tuesday, September 15, 2015,  in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Ervin Barham, her nephew, will officiate.  Burial will be in the West Burnsville Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
