REV. TROY McCOURRY
Rev. Troy McCourry, 88, of Cherry Lane, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at the John F. Keever Solace Center in Asheville. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Thomas Britt and Lou Peterson McCourry. He was also preceded in death by a sister: Clela Laws, and brothers: Coy, Ford and Voyd McCourry. His grandmother, Ruetta McCourry, was a special influence on his life. Troy began his ministry at the age of 20, having served as Pastor of Davistown FWB in Old Fort, Mountain Dale and South Side FWB churches in Erwin, TN, and was presently serving as Pastor of Pensacola FWB Church. Troy had held countless revivals. Under his ministry, 25 young men have become ordained ministers. He, along with his wife and son, owned and operated Troy’s Greenhouse and Variety, one of Burnsville’s oldest family operated businesses. Troy and his wife, Hattie were blessed in many ways and shared those blessings with others less fortunate. Surviving are his wife of 51 years: Hattie Wilcox McCourry; his son: Wade McCourry of the home; 2 sisters: Anna Belle Fox and husband, Robert, of Baltimore, MD and Stella Peterson of Slater, SC; 2 brothers: Kenneth McCourry and wife, Elizabeth, of Land O’ Lakes, FL and E. H. McCourry and wife, Carrie, of Darlington, MD, and a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Saturday in West Burnsville Baptist Church. Revs. Frank Cable and Bobby Revis and Dr. Burkett Raper will officiate. Burial will be in the Holcombe Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Friday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home where the body will remain until taken to the church to lie instate 30 minutes prior to the service. GLADYS HUTCHESON
Gladys Hutcheson, 85, of Burnsville, passed away Monday, April 06, 2009, at her residence. She was a native of St. Petersburg, FL. Gladys attended Lily Branch Baptist Church for 30 years. Surviving are her husband: Ernest Hutcheson; brother: Eugene Fogle of St. Petersburg, FL; and, several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11AM Saturday, April 11, 2009, in Memorial Park Cemetery in St. Petersburg. Rev. Vern A. Grindstaff will officiate. STANLEY CANIPE
Stanley Canipe, 53, of Green Mountain, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, April 6, 2009 at his home. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of C. C. and Ora Lee Presnell Canipe. He was a 1974 graduate of Cane River High School, a former employee of OMC and NC Dept. of Transportation. Stanley was a member and Sunday School Superintendent of Peterson Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. Surviving in addition to his parents, are a brother: Danny Canipe and wife, Pamela, of Marion; two nieces: Melissa Leroy and Rebecca Wing and husband, Dale; and a great niece: Kaitlyn Wing all of Oregon; an aunt: Faye Young and husband, Hal, of Green Mountain; animal companions: Cootie, the cat, and Molly, the dog, and many special friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Donald Whitson will officiate. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery at Horton Hill. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2 PM Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home. JAMES CLIFFORD HONEYCUTT
James Clifford Honeycutt, 74, of Prices Creek, passed Monday, April 6, 2009, in the McDowell Hospital. He had been a resident of Autumn Care in Marion for the past four years, where he had been loved and cared for. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Joe and Etta Mae Wilson Honeycutt. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter: Darlene Edna Honeycutt; and, brothers: Fred Metcalf, Edd Honeycutt and Junior Honeycutt. Mr. Honeycutt was a former employee of Banco Lumber Company and retired from Buncombe Construction. Surviving are 3 children: Dianne Neal and husband, Jim, of Marion, Danny Honeycutt and wife, Rebecca, of Celo, and Bonnie Bigelow of Asheville; 4 grandchildren: Ashley Adkinson, Brandon Bigelow, Charity Honeycutt and Mark Bigelow; 2 great grandchildren: Lathan Adkinson and Grayson Robinson; 2 sisters: Wilma Cosner of Morganton and Myree Chapman of Georgia; a brother: Donald Honeycutt of Weaverville; and, a special friend: Grace Fox of Burnsville. Funeral services will be held at 5PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. The Rev. Jim Wilken will officiate. Burial will follow in Horton Hill Cemetery on Horton Creek. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

MAUDE M. RIDDLE
Maude M. Riddle, 87, of Double Island Community, passed away Friday, April 3, 2009, in Brookside Rehabilitation and Care Center. A native and life long resident of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late James and Serena Hughes Riddle. She was preceded in death by two sisters: Viola R. Johnson and Martha R. Shipley; and, two brothers: Robert Lee Riddle and Ben Riddle. Maude was a member of Double Island Baptist Church. Surviving is a brother: Bulo Riddle of Holly, Michigan. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held at 7 P.M. Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. The Rev. Bart Deyton will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday in the Riddle-Hughes Cemetery on Upper Doe Bag. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
GRACE FOX RIDDLE
Grace Fox Riddle, 83, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, April 2, 2009 at her home. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Arcemeus and Lillie Banks Fox. She was also preceded in death by a grandson: Johnathan Ball; a sister: Annie Hensley and brothers: Coy, Charles, Roy and Roscoe Fox. Grace was a member of Pleasant Gap Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, William O. Riddle; 3 sons: Sam Ball and wife, Donna, of Cherokee; Danny Ball and wife, Myra, and Rev. Royce Ball and wife, Pat, all of Burnsville; a sister: Mildred McIntosh of Burnsville; a brother: Earl Fox of Baltimore, MD; 7 grandchildren; 16 grandchildren; a step daughter: Phyllis Silver of Burnsville; 4 step sons: Morris Riddle of Gastonia, Phillip and Johnny Riddle of Burnsville and Willie Riddle of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Funeral services will be held at 3 PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Revs. Steve Grindstaff and Royce Ball will officiate. MILDRED HUNTER WOODY
Mildred Hunter Woody, 89, of Byrd Branch, passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at her home. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Ed Hunter, Sr. and Beuna Bailey Hunter and the wife of Craig Woody who died in 1978. She was preceded in death by a sister: Evelyn H. Pate and a brother: Ed Hunter, Jr. Mildred was a member of Jacks Creek Presbyterian Church. After retirement, she was an active volunteer in her church and community, having logged more than 4,000 hours at the VA Medical Center.
Surviving are a son: Theron Woody and wife, Linda; a daughter: Shelda McIntosh and husband, Ronnie; 3 grandchildren: Terry Woody, Jon David England and Gretchen Whitson; 6 great grandchildren: Dalton, Kamron, Hunter, Hensley, Christian and Jordan all of Burnsville; a sister: Geneva Hedrick of Knoxville; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 8 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Dr. Bob Melvin and Rev. Charlie Carroway will officiate. Graveside services will be held Saturday in the Jacks Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Friday prior to the service at the funeral home. ROBERT W. WYATT
Robert W. Wyatt, 67, of Vale, formerly of Newdale, passed away Saturday, March 28, 2009 in Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of Flora Mae Grindstaff Wyatt of Newdale and the late Roy Wyatt. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Azalene Wyatt Hoover.. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are a son: Bobby Wyatt and wife, Kim, of Vale; 2 daughters: Valerie Wyatt of Lincolnton, and Debbie Adkins of Johnson City, TN; former wife and children’s mother: Alice Wyatt of Burnsville; 8 grandchildren; and, 2 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Brent Reynolds will officiate. Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Burial will be in the Morning Star Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
LlNDA LONG GABRIEL
Linda Long Gabriel, 53, of Burnsville, passed away Friday, March 27, 2009 at her home after a short illness. A native of Burke County, she had been a resident of Yancey County most of her life. She was a daughter of the late William and Pauline Huskins Long. Linda was also preceded in death by a sister, Diane Long and grandparents, William and Thelma Biggerstaff Long and Milton Harvey and Dora “Big Mama” Williams Huskins. Linda was a loving and caring wife and mother and will be missed.
Surviving are her husband: Chris Dakota Gabriel; her son: Rodney John Simmons, Jr. of Burnsville; two brothers: Sam Long and wife, Cheryl, of Lincolnton and William Dennis Long and wife, Virginia, of Burnsville; a very special niece: Lee Ann Long of Burnsville; and a special son: Kevin Warren of Burnsville.
Memorial services will be held at Noon on Wednesday in the Fairview Cemetery at Seven Mile Ridge.

MAE McKINNEY
Mae McKinney went home to be with her family and loved ones Monday, March 23, 2009. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Mills and Elsie Hall Edge, and wife of Paul D. McKinney who died in 1990. Mae was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and faithful friend to many, with a strong Christian faith, which was inspiring.
Surviving are a son: Dr. Jerry D. McKinney and wife, Norma, of Oklahoma City, OK; granddaughter: Alicia Laustsen and husband, Billy, and great granddaughters: Dora Faye and Allyson Jane, all of Charlotte; a grandson: Jerry Douglas McKinney, II and wife, Paula, and great grandsons: Jerry Douglas, III, Liam Riley and Cullen Finn, all of Oklahoma City; two sisters: Madge Davenport of Burnsville and Nell Hunter of Mebane, NC; a special nephew: Al Ray and wife, Lucy, of Burnsville; and, special caregiver: Reba Willis of Spruce Pine.
Funeral services will be held at 7PM Friday in Newdale Presbyterian Church. The Revs. Mike Brazelle and Steve Williams will officiate.
The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
