JERLEAN SILVERS

Jerlean Silvers, 71, of Swannanoa, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at Park Ridge Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Theodore and Ruth Robinson Freeman and the wife of Stanley Silvers who died in 2013.  She was also preceded in death by a sister, Betty Jean Freeman.  Jerlean retired from the Buncombe County School system in 2000.   She was a member of Swannanoa Valley Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are a daughter, Debbie Taylor and husband, Tim, of Swannanoa; a grandson, Ryan Taylor and wife, Emily, of Brevard; a granddaughter, Jessica Duffy and husband, Ryan, of Charlotte; sisters:  Genavee Layell and Willa Mae Whitson of Burnsville; and a brother, Doyle Freeman and wife, Teresa, of Mills River.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. David Dimsdale will officiate.  Burial will be in the Red Hill Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2 PM Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home.

GEORGIA WILSON SHUFORD

Georgia Wilson Shuford, 92, formerly of the White Oak Creek Community, of Yancey County,  went home to be with the Lord Thursday, January 1, 2015 at Autumn Care of Marion.  A native of Yancey County, she was the daughter of the late Ed and Julie Murphy Wilson and the wife of Robert Shuford who died in 1991.  She was also preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Ray Shuford;  a daughter, Katherine Denise Shuford; 2 sisters:  Margie Berryhill and Joyce Wilson; and 4 brothers:  Robert, Walter, Ransom and Edward Wilson.

 

Surviving are a brother, Emmett Wilson and wife, Wanda, of Forest City; sisters-in-law:  Dollie Wilson of Busick and Lillie Wilson of Marion.  Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Andrew Walker will officiate.  Burial will be in the Autrey Cemetery at South Estatoe Baptist Church.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

JAY HUGH STYLES

Jay Hugh Styles, 89, of the Pensacola Community of Yancey County, passed away Thursday, December 25, 2014, at Yancey House.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Elbert Hugh and Julia Honeycutt Styles, and the husband of 64 years to Ruby Mae Wilson Styles who died in May 2014.  He was also preceded in death by 4 brothers:  Elzie, Bert, Mack and Lee Styles; and, 5 sisters:  Kate Styles, Carrie Wilson, Ruth Bowers, Grovia Wright and Dorothy Horton.  Jay was a World War II U. S. Navy Veteran, having served in the Aleutian Islands on the USS Trenton.  He spent most of his life as a salesman, business manager and Christmas tree farmer, but was happiest when he was outdoors hunting, beekeeping, gardening and spending time with his beloved family and friends.  Jay was a member of the Cane River Bear Club.

 

Surviving are 2 daughters:  Debby Graham and husband, Bill, of Weaverville, and Mary Beth Thurman and husband, David, of Charlotte; 4 grandchildren:  Will Graham and wife, Shelley, of Weaverville, Thomas Thurman of Charlotte, Deborah Thurman of Richmond Heights, MO, and Mary Thurman of Charlotte; a sister:  Clara Culberson of Asheville; a brother:  Walter Styles and wife, Myrtis, of Black Mountain; and a brother-in-law:  Jerry Wilson and wife, Betty, of Pensacola.  Numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Pastor A. J. Moore will officiate.  A private burial will be in the Big Tom Wilson Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family wishes to extend their thanks to the loving staff at the Yancey House for the wonderful care he received during his last years, and to the kind staff of Hospice of Yancey County.

THOMAS WILLIAM SMITH, Sr.

Thomas William Smith, Sr, 78 of Burnsville, passed away Sunday, December 21, 2014 at his home, following a lengthy illness.  A native of Hamilton County, FL, he was born Feb. 25, 1936 to the late Charles Edward and Nellie Keene Smith.  Thomas was a longtime resident of Jasper, FL before moving to Burnsville.  He worked in sales most of his life.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Audrey Johns Smith; three daughters: Debra Hamm and husband Joey of Live Oak, FL, Kim Atkinson and husband Roger of Anderson, SC and Leslie McKinney and husband Robert of Green Mountain; two sons: Tom Smith and wife Janice of Jennings, FL and Blake Smith and wife Kay of Burnsville: a sister: Beatrice Selph of Jasper; 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 P. M. Tuesday, December 23, 2014 in New Hope Baptist Church near Jennings.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Harry T. Reid Funeral Home, 901 NW 4th Street, Jasper, FL is serving the family in Florida.

Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home is assisting the Smith family with local arrangements.

VIRGINIA STYLES

Virginia Styles, 83, of Burnsville, passed away Friday, December 19, 2014, at her home. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Elzie and Savannah Smith Silver.  She was also preceded in death by a sister:  Faye Seran; and, brothers:  Roy, Herman and Earl Silver.

 

Surviving are her husband:  Murry Styles, Jr.; brother:  Claude Silver and wife, Grace; and sister-in-law:  Jean Silver, all of Burnsville; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Junior Honeycutt and Hospice Chaplain Joe Bennett will officiate.  Burial will be in the Pete Young Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

DANNY RADFORD

Danny Radford, 63, of Prices Creek passed away Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Fred and Mary Edwards Radford.  He was also preceded in death by brothers:  Ray, Billy, Reece and William Weldon Radford.  He retired from French Broad Electric Membership Corporation.

 

Surviving are his son, Danny Lawrence Radford of Burnsville; a sister, Helen Radford Hilemon of Marion; 3 sisters-in-law; several nieces and nephews; and the mother of his son, Lola Silvers Radford of Burnsville.

 

The family will receive friends from Noon until 1:00 PM Friday, December 19, 2014 at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home prior to the graveside service. 

 

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 PM Friday in the Piney Hill Cemetery.

NANCY BURNETTE SILVER

Nancy Burnette Silver, 64, of the Low Gap Community, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, December 14, 2014 at St. Josephs Campus of Mission Hospitals.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Cecil and Louise Adams Burnette.  She was also preceded in death by a son, Tracy Silver who died in 2000; 2 sisters:  Wilma Wilson and Bernice McMahan; and a brother, Earl Burnette.

 

Surviving are her husband of 47 years, Welzie Silver, Jr.; a daughter, Jill Silver Wilson and husband, Randy; a son, Brook Silver; grandchildren:  Layla Wilson and Katelyn Silver; 3 sisters:  Patsy Riddle and husband, Bobby, Peggy Harris and husband, Bill, and Brenda Robinson and husband, Frank, all of Burnsville; 5 brothers;  Charles Burnette and wife, Carol, of Akron, Ohio, Donald Burnette and wife, Peggy, of Springfield, OR, Ray Burnette and wife, Norma, Leon Burnette and wife, Peggy, and Lawrence “Pudgy” Burnette and wife, Ponda, all of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday in Low Gap Free Will Baptist Church, of which she was a member.  Rev. Blaine Whitson will officiate.  Burial will be in the Ray Cemetery on Bee Branch.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

MARY JUNE SHEARER

Mary June Shearer, 98, of Hunter Street in Burnsville, passed away Saturday, December 13, 2014, at Mars Hill Retirement Center.  A resident of Fort Lauderdale and part time resident of Burnsville and Mars Hill, she was the wife of Wells Shearer who died in 1998 at age 100. [He celebrated his last birthday with a round of golf at Mount Mitchell Gold Course].  Mary June graduated from Columbia University and was an airlines stewardess during World War II.

 

Surviving are a son:  Dack Dalrymple and wife, Marcia, of Washington, D.C.; 2 sisters:  Dorothy Hansen of Asheville and Joan Bunts of Batesville, Indiana; 2 grandchildren:  Daylan Dalrymple of San Diego, California and Lauren Wade and husband, Ryan, of Manasquan, New Jersey.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Burial will be at a later date in Roselawn-Mounds Cemetery in Charleston, Illinois.

CLELIA GEOUGE COOPER

Clelia Geouge Cooper, 76, of Cooper Lane, passed away Thursday, December 11, 2014 in Blue Ridge Regional Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Ben and Geanette Griffith Geouge.  She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Melody Margaret Cooper.  Clelia enjoyed nature’s beauty, making many handmade craft items.  She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

 

Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Ray Cooper; a son, Tim Cooper and wife, Michelle, of Sneedville, TN; a daughter, Katy Camp and husband, Jon, of Parrotsville, TN; a grandson, Luke Cooper of Sneedville, TN; 2 brothers:  Benny Geouge and wife, Sharon, of Micaville and Jim Geouge and wife, Cindy, of Canton; 2 sisters:  Sonya Brown and husband, Bob, of Lexington and Tina Geouge of Asheville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Saturday, December 20, 2014 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Burial will be in the West Burnsville Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from Noon until 2 PM Saturday, December 20, 2014 prior to the service at the funeral home.

CHRISY McCLURE RAY

Chrisy Nichole McClure Ray, 32, of Bill Allen Branch, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, December 11, 2014 unexpectedly at her home.  She was the daughter of Steve and Donna Bodford McClure of Burnsville.  Miss Chrisy, as she was known by the students at Burnsville Elementary School, was a teacher’s assistant who loved her job, the children and her co-workers.  Chrisy was a member of West Burnsville Church of God.  Her family was her world.  She was a loving mother, wife, daughter, granddaughter, sister and friend to all.

 

Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her husband, Justin Ray; the pride of her life, Steven and Treven Ray of the home; her brother, Bryan McClure and Samantha Briggs; grandparents:  Donald and Juanita Black Bodford and Doyce and Louise McClure all of Burnsville.  Justin’s family:  Beth, John, Meghan and Grace McIntosh and Golda Peterson all of Burnsville; special aunts and uncles:  Sharon and Roger Honeycutt and Billy Bodford and Stephanie Laws; cousins:  Jake and Jordan Honeycutt; special family members:  Debi Letterman, Phyllis Crosby and Liz Robinson; and her extended family of staff and students at Burnsville Elementary School.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Brother Tim Campbell will officiate.  Burial will be in the Pete Young Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from Noon until 3:00 PM Sunday prior to the service at the funeral home.
