SHIRLEY COOPER

Shirley Cooper, 65, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, November 13, 2008, at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Dave and Lillie Edwards Robinson.  She was also preceded in death by a sister:  Blanche Robinson; and, a brother:  Dee Robinson.  Shirley was a member of Piney Hill Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband:  Paul Cooper; 4 sons:  Bobby Cooper of Concord, Ricky Cooper of Spruce Pine, Randy Cooper of Burnsville and Donnie Cooper of Belmont; 2 sisters:  Pearl Bryant of Etowah and Avie Tipton of Burnsville; 5 brothers:  Dallas, Albert and Ray Robinson of Florida, Allison Robinson of Marion and Dean Robinson of Burnsville; and, 10 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Denver Styles and David Bryant will officiate.  Burial will be in Cooper Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

EDGAR F. HUNTER, JR.

Edgar F. Hunter, Jr., 84, of Burnsville died Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at Mission Hospitals Memorial Campus.  A native of Yancey County, he was the son of the late Edgar F. Hunter, Sr. and Buena Bailey Hunter.  He was also preceded in death by a sister:  Evelyn H. Pate.  A World War II Navy Veteran, he returned to Yancey County where he dedicated his professional life to education as a teacher, principal and Superintendent of Schools.  In retirement, he gave much of his time volunteering in many charitable organizations and civic activities.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Doris Penland Hunter; 3 daughters:  Janice Demcio and husband, Bob, and Marie Niland and husband, Ron, all of  Mt. Airy and Anne Hunter-Eidson and husband, Jonathan, of Charlotte; grandchildren:  Amy Cox, Jennie Kerley, Katie Demcio, Ryan Niland, Josh Eidson, Allie Eidson; and a great grandson:  Brady Cox; and 2 sisters:  Mildred Woody of Burnsville and Geneva Hedrick of Knoxville, TN.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday at First Baptist Church of Burnsville of which he was an active and dedicated member serving in many leadership roles.  Rev. Richard Muri will officiate.  Burial will be in the Robertson Cemetery at West Burnsville.

The family will receive friends from Noon until 2:00 P.M. prior to the service at the church.

CHARLES JOHNNY TIPTON

Charles Johnny Tipton, 71, of Statesville, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, November 9, 2008.  He was a son of the late Bannister and Opel Crowder Tipton.  He was also preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Pauline Billie Tipton.

Surviving are his son:  George Tipton of Gray Court, SC and 10 stepchildren; 6 sisters:  Mary Hensley of Arden, Emiline Jackson of Weaverville, Mildred Pate of Mars Hill, Virgie Teague of Lenior, Audrey Arwood of Canton and Nell Swann of Asheville; 4 brothers:  Fred Tipton of Mars Hill, Floyd Tipton of Weaverville, Estel Tipton of Asheville and Lloyd Tipton of Mills River; a granddaughter:  Trisha Tipton and a great granddaughter:  Raiven DeWitt.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Steve Reinhart and Furman Wilson will officiate.  Burial will be in the Tipton-Hensley Cemetery at Bald Mountain.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

ANNA ZABIK

Anna Zabik, 97, of Lickskillet Road, passed away Saturday, November 8, 2008, in Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Massachusetts, she had been a resident of Yancey County for the past 40 years.  She was the wife of Walter Zabik who died in 1992.  She was also preceded in death by 2 sisters and 3 brothers.  Anna was of the Catholic faith.

Surviving are 2 daughters:  Dorothy Hylemon of Burnsville and Mildred Kolek of Chicopee, MA; 3 sons:  Robert Zabik of Fenton, Michigan, William Zabik of Belchertown, MA and Frank Zabik of Agawam, MA; a sister:  Jenny Herchel of Chicopee, MA; 16 grandchildren; and, 21 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.  Memorials may be made to Hospice of Yancey County, 856 Georges Fork Road, Burnsville, NC 28714.

JAY JAMES McCRACKEN

Jay James McCracken, 92, of Plum Branch, passed away Saturday, November 8, 2008, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Henry and Pansy Boone McCracken.  He was also preceded in death by two sisters:  Gladys Robinson and Della Dale; and, a brother: William McCracken.

Surviving are a brother:  Elzie McCracken and two sisters: Ethel McCracken and Jewell Hughes all of Burnsville.  13 nieces and nephews and a very special caregiver, Linda Ayers, also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 7 P.M. Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Perry Robinson and Dwight Boone, Jr. will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 A. M. Monday in the Plum Branch Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7 P. M. prior to the service at the funeral home and at other times will be at the home of his sister, Jewell Hughes, 415 Stillhouse Lane.

MARIA CARRILLO RAMOS

Maria Guadalupe Carrillo Ramos, 83, of Burnsville, died Saturday, November 8, 2008 from injuries received from an automobile accident.   She was a native of Cheran, Michoacan, Mexico.

Survivors include her son, Manuel Sanchez Carrillo of Burnsville, grandchildren and other family members.

Funeral Mass will be held at Noon Saturday, November 15, 2008 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.   Father Frank Reece will officiate.

The family will receive friends following Mass.

Her body is being returned to her hometown of Cheran, Michoacan, Mexico for burial in the San Francisco Cemetery.

LOREN DENISON BAKER

Loren Denison Baker, 91, of Indian Trail, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, November 06, 2008 at Brookside Rehabilitation & Care.

Surviving are his wife:  Evelyn Gorman Baker of Burnsville; a daughter:  Arlene Motte of Burnsville; sons:  Dennis Ralph Baker of Richmond, Virginia and Robert E. Baker of Burnsville.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Yancey County, 856 Georges Fork Road, Burnsville, NC 28714.

KELLEY LEE PENLAND

Kelley Lee Penland, 76, of Possum Trot, passed away Wednesday, November 5, 2008 in Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Herman and Ada Doan Penland.  He was preceded in death by a son, Herman Penland and a brother, Junior Penland.  A U.S. Army Veteran, Kelley was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years:  Sarah Honeycutt Penland; a daughter:  Susie Whitson of Burnsville; a granddaughter:  Jessica Whitson of Wilkesboro; a great granddaughter:  Hailey Watkins of Wilkesboro and a sister:  Myrtle Honeycutt of Burnsville.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Blaine Whitson will officiate.  Burial will be in the Penland Cemetery on Possum Trot Road with military graverites conducted by Sgt. E. Randolph Chapter 57 DAV.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

MILAM LEWIS

Milam Lewis, 90, formerly of Little Creek passed away Monday, November 3, 2008 in Mountain Ridge Wellness Center in Black Mountain.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Goldman and Sue Emma Bradford Lewis.  She was also preceded in death by a brother, Arvil Lewis.

Surviving are a daughter:  Barbara Trotter and husband, Jerry; 4 grandchildren:  Brenda Greene and husband, James, Kathy Whittington and husband, Bobby, Rebecca Bridges and husband, Perry, and Jerry Wayne Trotter and wife, Darla, all of Slayden, TN; a special niece:  Kathy Rhymer of Marion and several other nieces and nephews; 11 great grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Bill Mitchell will officiate.  Burial will be in the Arvil Lewis Cemetery on Little Creek.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.

CLARA McPETERS

Clara McPeters, 90, of the Low Gap Community passed away Friday, October 31, 2008 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Talmadge and Allie Hensley McMahan and the wife of Carmel McPeters who died in 1992. She was also preceded in death by sisters Agnes Patton, Zula McPeters, Johnsie Rathburn, Pearl Harris and Kathleen Boone and brothers Wade and Earl McMahan.

Surviving are her daughter:  Barbara Biggs of Nebo, a sister: Ruby Honeycutt of Burnsville, four grandsons and six great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 3:30 P.M. Sunday in the Eddie McMahan Cemetery at Low Gap. The Rev. Jerry Shelton will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 P.M. Sunday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.
