TERRILL R. RAY

Terrill Randall Ray, 80 of the Pleasant Gap Community passed away Tuesday, October 28, 2014 after an on-going battle with Alzheimer’s.  Leaving behind to honor his memory are daughters:  Teresa Bryant Brown and husband, Steve, of Burnsville and April Woody and husband, Tim, of Green Mountain.  God blessed Terrill richly with four grandchildren whom he adored:  Bridget Bryant and Barron Bryant and wife, Morgan, (their father, Greg Bryant), Sabrena Woody and Devan Woody.  His best friend and life-long companion was his sister, Berlean Lawhern of Burnsville.

Terrill was preceded in death by the love of his life whom he was married to for 50 years, Anita Sparks Ray.  He was also preceded in death by his father, John Biss Ray and mother, Myra Ray Silver.

Terrill loved the Lord his God above any and all things.  His life was proudly dedicated to serving God at Pleasant Gap Church where he was Deacon Chairman for 36 years and Men’s Sunday School Teacher for 29 years.  His grandson described him best when he said, “PaPa died two years ago when he lost his ability to go to church.”  Terrill was a life-long teacher and learner, guiding and instructing his church family, his daughters and his grandchildren.  Having recently told his oldest grandson, “I’ve laid the groundwork, enough said.”

Terrill served the residents of Yancey County as an auto mechanics teacher for 20 years.  Folks brought their vehicles from near and far for Terrill to work on and if he couldn’t fix it, well, it couldn’t be fixed.  Nothing pleased him more than running up with a past student or fellow teacher.  He thought Fords and Dodges were the greatest inventions and Chevrolets were ranked out there with all the other foreign makes.  He loved fast cars and racing.  Neither his daughters nor his grandchildren can ever remember riding with him that he didn’t lay black marks pulling out.  He was destined to be a lover of cars and his grandkids were fascinated when he would talk about the time when he was a teenager and built a car inside his mom and dad’s house with parts he bartered for and the others ordered from a Sears and Roebuck catalog.  (They had to knock the side of the house out to get the car out.  It was worth more!)

Terrill proudly served his country as a mechanic in the United States Army.  He continued his service for his country and his county by serving as a Land Commissioner for the Yancey County Clerk of Court.  He had an abundance of knowledge about land in Yancey County which he gained from his years of ginseng hunting.  Friends who went with him would laugh and say, “He complained about his back and legs until you got to the woods.  Then you couldn’t keep up with him!”  Terrill also loved to fish and no man ever caught one bigger than his.  He recently shared his fishing philosophy with his grandson before his wedding day, “Don’t let fishing get in the way of marriage; but, don’t let marriage get in the way of fishing.”

Terrill, Dad, PaPa, will be greatly missed.  A void and pain unlike any other has been left behind.  However, he would never have wanted that.  Terrill treasured life and believed life was a gift from God that should be celebrated.  Pain and sorrow are now gone and he is healed, living with the Greatest Healer and Teacher of all, The Lord Jesus Christ.  We Praise You, Lord for the Heavenly Father You are to us and for the earthly father, grandfather, and friend you gave us.

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Friday in Pleasant Gap Baptist Church.  Rev. Matthew Vern Grindstaff will officiate.  Burial will be in the Fred Young Cemetery with military grave rites conducted by Sgt. E. L. Randolph, DAV, Chapter 57.
