EDGAR WHEELER

Edgar Wheeler, 83, of Pine Swamp Road, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family.  A native of Yancey County he was a son of the late John Moss and Rose Ella Berry Wheeler.  Edgar was also preceded in death by 4 children:  an infant, Michael, Curtis and Floyd Edward Wheeler; 2 sisters:  Mozelle Webb and Veo Byrd; 2 brothers:  Lloyd and Boyd Wheeler.  Edgar loved singing gospel music, serving the Lord in church and nursing home services regularly throughout the area.  He was self-taught in music, which inspired many with his talents having taught guitar and harmony.  He was a loving Daddy and Grand-Pa.

 

Surviving are 9 children:  Earmel Wheeler (Deborah), Brenda Wheeler, Delane Wheeler (Sherry) all of Burnsville, Donna Agner (Barry) of Raleigh, Kathy Ayers (Royce), Jimmy Wheeler, Priscilla Wheeler, Loretta Allen (Donny) all of Burnsville and Angela Wheeler of Mitchell County; 24 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; sister:  Alene Silvers  (Reece); a brother, Floyd Wheeler (Letha) of Burnsville; and special friends:  Estalene Bennett and Rev. James Beaver and The Shining Light Quartet.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Saturday in Higgins Free Will Baptist Church of which he was a member.  Revs. James Beaver, Junior Peterson and Denny Wilson will officiate.  Burial will be in the Higgins Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Friday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home where the body will remain until taken to the church to lie in state one hour prior to the service.

ARTHUR WHITSON

Arthur Whitson, 84, of the Brush Creek Community, went to be with the Lord Sunday, May 4, 2014 at Mission Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Fred and Isby Gortney Whitson and the husband of Kathryn Presnell Whitson who died in 2005.  He was also preceded in death by a sister, Kate Bailey and brothers:  Jay Lee and Claude Whitson.  He was a US Army Korean War Veteran.  Arthur was a former employee of Mohasco Industries and retired from Henredon Furniture Company.

 

Surviving are a daughter, Miranda Evans and husband, Mack, of Green Mountain; a grandson, Shane Whitson; great grandchildren:  Dalton and Cierra Whitson; a brother, Carl Whitson and wife, Earlene, of Green Mountain.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Tuesday, May 6, 2014 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Tony Norris and Haskie Honeycutt, Jr. will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery with military grave rites by Sgt. E. L. Randolph Chapter 57, DAV.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 PM Tuesday prior to the service at the funeral home.

HOWARD E. WYATT

Howard E. Wyatt, 88, of Marion, passed away Friday, May 2, 2014, at his home.  A native and former resident of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Landon and Mary Hughes Wyatt.  He was the husband of 62 years to Elma Peek Wyatt who died in 2011.  Howard was also preceded in death by 4 brothers and a sister.

Left to cherish his memory are his son:  Charles Wyatt and wife, Janice; 2 daughters:  Glenda Wyatt and Hilda Boyd and husband, Fred, all of Marion; 4 grandchildren:  Christopher Canipe and Miranda of Marion, Natalie Smith of Raleigh, Jacqueline Wyatt of Marion and Madeline Wyatt of Raleigh; and, 3 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Bill Mitchell will officiate.  Burial will be in the Morning Star Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the memorial service at the funeral home.

GLORIA JEAN HALL

Gloria Jean Hall, age 71, died at her home, surrounded by family, in Burnsville, NC on May 2, 2014.  After heroically surviving breast cancer two years ago, she recently learned of its return.

 

Gloria was born in Northfield, VT on August 21, 1942, the oldest daughter of Kenneth Cook, Sr., and Alberta Paye Cook.  At the age of 14, she moved with her parents and siblings from Gove Hill in Thetford Center, VT to Portland, CT.

 

Gloria met the love of her life, Charles Hall, 53 years ago in Middletown, CT.  They married in 1963 and their love for one another has shined for 51 years of marriage.

 

In 1965, their family became three with the birth of their daughter, Rhonda Marie Hall.  Beyond Gloria and Rhonda’s mother-daughter bond, they enriched each other’s live as best friends.  In 1988, they were blessed with a granddaughter, Stephanie Jean Nye, who Gloria adored and cherished beyond words.  In 1998, she once again opened her heart, becoming a surrogate grandmother to Stephanie’s half-sister, Krysten Nye.

 

Gloria’s passion was showering unconditional love on Charlie, Rhonda, Stephanie, Krysten and those who were dear to her.

 

Throughout her life, especially during her life in the country, she loved nature, the birds, the flowers and the breathtaking view of “her mountains.”  She was drawn to animals and adored her little dog, Buttercup, and the neighbor’s dog, Eddie, who she claimed ownership of.

 

She is survived by Charles of Burnsville, Rhonda and husband, Jim Barone of Middletown, CT, Stephanie of Boston, MA and Krysten of East Hampton, CT.  Also, siblings Roderick Cook of Bradford, VT and Goldie Jamieson of Silver Springs, FL.  Gloria is also survived by Donna Lee Cook, a special niece with whom she shared a special bond, and several nieces and nephews.

 

She was predeceased by her parents and brothers, Kenneth, Jr. and Richard.

 

The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 AM Monday, May 5, 2014 at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  A Mass will be held at 11:30 AM, Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 20 Summit Street in Burnsville.  Burial will be in the Academy Hill Cemetery.  There will be a reception following at Bowditch Union Church Fellowship Hall, 420 Rice Road in Burnsville.

GUY PHILLIPS

Guy Phillips, 82, of  Hortons Creek, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at Brookside Rehab and Care.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Elmer and Kate McIntosh Phillips.  He was also preceded in death by brothers:  Ray, Foch, Locke and Buck Phillips and a sister,  Elizabeth Edwards.  He was a US Army Korean War Veteran and former owner of Phillips Grocery.  Guy was a member of Cane River Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Genevie Hensley Phillips; a daughter, Sandra Newberry; a son, Marty Guy Phillips and wife, Amanda; 3 grandchildren:  Matthew Guy Phillips and Kayla and Rachel Newberry all of Burnsville; a sister:  Geraldine Banks and husband, Jim, of Asheville; a brother, Jap Phillips and wife, Ginger, of Burnsville and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. James Lamb will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Saturday in the Cane River Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 PM Friday, prior to the service, at the funeral home.

IRENE PENLAND

Irene Penland, 97, of Prices Creek went home to be with the Lord Sunday, April 27, 2014 at Spruce Pine Brian Center.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Paul and Willie Mae Robertson Higgins and wife of Cecil E. Penland who died in 2004.  She was also preceded in death by a sister, Paula Mae Higgins.  She was a retired Yancey County Public School teacher.  Irene was a member of Paint Gap Presbyterian Church where she served as Sunday School Teacher for many years.  She was a homemaker and loved her flowers and garden.

 

Surviving are 3 sons:  Alex Penland and wife, Carolyn, of Burnsville, Will Penland and wife, Nancy, of North Cove, and Eric Penland and wife, Rhonda, of Green Mountain; 3 grandchildren:  Ed Penland, Joe Penland and Lydia Penland; 5 great grandchildren; and a special friend and caretaker:  Eva Jo Garland.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Pastor Bobby Justus and Rev. Maggie Lauterer will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 10 AM Thursday in the Raymond Penland Family Cemetery on Maney Branch.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

TOMMY J. KING

Tommy J. King, 72, of Burnsville went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at John F. Keever, Jr., Solace Center.  He was a son of the late Troy and Chloe Angel King.  He was also preceded in death by a son, Jeff; a sister, Willowlou McIntosh; and a brother,  Dove King.  Tommy was a member and deacon of Elk Shoal Baptist Church.

 

Left to cherish memories are his wife of 52 years, Linda McCurry King; his daughters:  Tammy Anglin (Tom) of Spruce Pine, Vanessa Taylor (Randy) of Weaverville and Nancy Peterson of Burnsville; 6 grandchildren:  Ryan, Sarah, Destiny, Tyler, Blake and Alexis; 3 great grandchildren:  Brayden, Rylie and Liam; sisters:  Betty Fortner of Burnsville and Jo Mason of Asheville; and a brother:  Jerry King of Asheville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Stacey Elkins will officiate.  Burial will be in the King Cemetery on Elk Shoals Creek Road, with the deacons of Elk Shoal Baptist Church serving as pallbearers.

 

The family will receive friends from Noon until 2 PM Sunday prior to the service at the funeral home.

LLOYD PHILLIP DEYTON

Lloyd Phillip Deyton, 78, of Green Mountain, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Cecil and Leora Tipton Deyton.  He was also preceded in death by brothers:  Boyd, Ben and Clyde Deyton.  Lloyd was a retired public school teacher and coach.  He had a deep love for his family.  Lloyd also had a love for farming, and spent time with his friends playing rook, fox hunting and was a fixture in the Democratic Party.  He was a member and trustee of Covy Rock Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son:  Phillip Deyton and wife, Jeannette, of Green Mountain; 2 daughters:  Lisa McCourry and husband, Ricky, of Green Mountain, and Angie Vance and husband, Linc, of Burnsville; sisters:  Hope Hensley and Helen Hughes of Burnsville, and Doris Willis of Old Fort; brothers:  Clarence, Claude and Johnny Deyton of Burnsville and Donnie Deyton of Sevierville, TN; 6 grandchildren:  Anthony McCourry and wife, Olivia, Brandon McCourry and wife, Lori, Bryan Deyton, Catlin Deyton, and Lexi and Aidan Vance; and, 2 great grandchildren:  Kallie Mae McCourry and Zoe Grace McCourry.

Funeral services will be held at 7PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Russell Hughes, Bart Deyton and Randy Laws will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Monday in the Cecil Deyton Family Cemetery on Charlie Deyton Road.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

HARM EUGENE (GENE) ROBINSON

Harm Eugene (Gene) Robinson, 80, of Burnsville passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 22, 2014 surrounded by his family.  A native of Mars Hill, he moved to Burnsville in 1955 after being honorably discharged from the military.  Gene was a post Korean War US Army Veteran stationed in Germany.  During his time in Germany, he participated in the post war reconstruction of Europe.  He received the National Defense Service Medal & Army Occupation Medal (Germany).  Post military, Gene had a long career in manufacturing and also maintained a small farm on Charlie Brown Road in Burnsville, which he enjoyed.

 

Gene is survived by his wife of 62 years, Camilee Penland Robinson; two daughters:  Barbara J. Robinson and husband, Larry, of Asheville and Lisa D. Hall and husband, Johnny, of Burnsville; two sons:  Randall L. Robinson of Asheville and Terry E. Robinson and wife, Holly, of Durham, NC; one granddaughter:  Amanda Nicole Hall of Johnson City, TN; three grandsons:  Jonathan M. Robinson and wife, Kelly, of Jacksonville, FL, Mark Robinson and Benjiman Robinson; two great-grandsons:  Jamason Cole Robinson and Jordan Brandon Robinson all of Burnsville.  Gene is also survived by three sisters-in-law:  Evelyn Hensley and Hazel Robinson of Mars Hill and Lena Metcalf of Burnsville; as well as, numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, April 26, 2014 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Davy Shelton will officiate.  Interment will be in the John Metcalf Cemetery on Horton Creek, with Military grave rites by Sgt E. L. Randolph, Chapter 57, DAV.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times, may be reached at the family home on Charlie Brown Road.

ROBERT B. MILLER

Robert B. Miller, 83, of Audubon, PA, formerly of Yancey County, passed away Friday, April 18, 2014, at Brookside Rehabilitation & Care.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Carter and Flossie Bradford Miller.  He was a US Army Veteran and a former employee of Firestone Tire and Rubber Company of Pottstown, PA.

Surviving are his companion:  Lill Kateusz; 2 sons:  Steve Miller and wife, JoAnne, of Pottstown, PA and Wayne Miller of Burnsville; grandchildren:  Steven and Jennifer and Anthony Miller and Tammy; and, a sister:  Lillian Burgner of Greenville.

Funeral services will be held at 11AM Wednesday, April 23, 2014, in Bee Log Baptist Church.  Rev. Kelly Bryant will officiate. Burial will follow in Bee Log Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
