A. JAY LAWS
A. Jay Laws, 73, of Morrow, GA, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2014. A native of Yancey County, he was the son of the late Joe and Maxine Deyton Laws. He was also preceded in death by a daughter: Natalie Laws. A. Jay worked for Ford Motor Company over 40 years and was a member of Guiding Light Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife: Wanda Laughrun Laws; children: Randy Laws and wife, Michele, Rhonda Pierce and husband, Billy, and Alvin Laws; grandchildren: Dejah Nesbit and husband, Brad, Kaney Cowart, Andy and Kayleigh Laws, Megan Martin and husband, David, Brooke, Lindsay and LeaAnnePierce, and Jessica Martin; great grandchildren: Kileigh Pierce, Ansleigh Martin, Alyssa and Malayke Coots, Cayden Pierce, Jaxon Wisor and Nathan Martin; and, a sister: Frances Webb and husband, David.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. A graveside service will be at 1PM Friday in Fairview Cemetery at Horton Hill. Rev. Harold Lowery will officiate.
THURMA STATON HUGHES
Thurma Staton Hughes, 89, of Micaville, went home to be with the Lord Friday, April 4, 2014. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late John and Ora Fortner Staton. She was the wife of Filmore Hughes who died in 2011. Thurma was also preceded in death by a sister: Paulette Harris; and brothers: Terrell and Ray Staton. She was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church. Thurma was a loving Mother, Nanny and Great Nanny.
Surviving are 2 daughters: Linda Russell and husband, Mike, of Asheville and Sabra Tipton and husband, Horace, of Mill Springs; 2 granddaughters: Ashley Edmonds and husband, Shannon, and Kishia Wise and husband, Bobby; great granddaughter: Madison Wise; brother: J. C. Staton of Acworth, GA; 2 special friends and caregivers: Tommy Dale and Linda Hughes; and special friends: Clinton, Denise and Randy.
Funeral services will be held at 2PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Revs. Billy Mitchell and Donnie Bryant will officiate. Burial will be in the Morning Star Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times will be at her home at Hunter Run Apartments.
JANICE HONEYCUTT WHEELER
Janice Honeycutt Wheeler, 68, of Burnsville went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at John F. Keever Solace Center in Asheville. A native of Yancey County, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Hazel Byrd Honeycutt. She was also preceded in death by a son, Anthony Branton; husband: Paul Branton, who died in 1987; and brothers: Gerald and Larry Dean Honeycutt. Janice was a retired employee of Glen Raven Mills.
Surviving are her husband, Jerry Wheeler; a daughter: Monica Pearson and husband, Christopher, of Columbia, SC; 2 sons: Marty Branton and wife, Dorene, and Danny Branton and wife, Gail; a step daughter: Angie Swartz and husband, Eric; and a step son: David Wheeler all of Burnsville; grandchildren: Cody, Dawson, Jalen, Paul, Nicaela, Hayden, Malikai, Kyleigha, Nyasia, Randi, Megan, Hagen, Jared and Dawson; 3 great grandchildren: Emily, Alyson and Mason; and a brother: Bobby Honeycutt and wife, Marie, of Taylors, SC.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Friday in Young’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church of which she was a member. Revs. Roger Thompson and Dean Honeycutt will officiate. Burial will be in the Young’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Thursday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home where the body will remain until taken to the church to lie in state one hour prior to the service.

MYRTLE DOCHIE HENSLEY DULANEY
Myrtle Dochie Hensley Dulaney, 87, of the Shoal Creek community went home to be with the Lord, Monday, March 24, 2014 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Furman and Alice Willis Hensley and the wife of Lloyd Dulaney who passed away in 2003. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Stanley Laws; a great granddaughter, Natasha Bolick; sons-in-law: Tony Laws and Larry Robinson; sister, Lola Hughes; sister-in-law, Irene Hensley and a brother-in-law, John Patrick.
Myrtle was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother. She loved spending time with her family, gardening, attending to her flowers and reading her Bible. She was the oldest member of Pilgrims Chapel Free Will Baptist Church
Surviving are her daughters: Betty Jean Laws, Margie Dulaney and Madge Robinson; grandchildren: Michelle Hill Brewer and husband, Richard, Michael Laws and wife, Ashley, Delores Garland, and husband, Bart, and Anthony Laws and wife, Amanda; great grandchildren: Brianna and Blake Laws, Maddison and Emmaline Garland, Travis Wilson and Brandy and Nick Bolick and Emily; great-great grandson: Ayden Wilson all of Burnsville; sisters: Martha Profitt and husband, Carnel, of Sylva, and Grace Patrick of Zephyrhills, FL and a brother: Glen Hensley of Hickory.
Funeral services will be held at 8 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Revs. Clyde Thomason and Russell Hughes will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 1 PM Thursday in the Dulaney Cemetery on Shoal Creek.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times, will be at her home on Shoal Creek.

MARY LOUISE BLALOCK
Mary Louise Blalock, 84, of the South Toe community, died Friday, March 21, 2014, at her home. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Sam and Grace Riddle Blalock. She was also preceded in death by brothers: Kenneth, John, Frank and George Blalock; and, a sister: Edith Weatherman.
Surviving are her brother: Clyde Blalock and wife, Kate; and, numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at Noon Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Pete Peterson will officiate. Burial will be in the Carroway Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
WILLIE 'GENE' EVANS
Willie “Gene” Evans, 63, of Jacks Creek, passed away unexpectedly Friday, March 21, 2014, at his home. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of Bill Evans of Burnsville and the late Hattie Silvers. Gene was a US Army veteran. He was a retired employee of Bombardier, an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, and a friend to all.
Surviving, in addition to his father, are his long time loving companion of 14 years: Carla Manis of the home; 2 daughters: Andrea McKinney and husband, Chris, of Spruce Pine and Misty Evans of Burnsville; 5 grandsons: Seth and Justin Hughes, Daulton, Branden and Blaid Buchanan; a great grandson: Kaysen Buchanan; and, 2 sisters: Linda Wykle of Greeneville, TN and Pam Rathburn of Morganton.
Funeral services will be held at 3PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Revs. G E Freeman and Pete Peterson will officiate. Burial will be in the Evans Family Cemetery with military honors by Sgt. E.L. Randolph Chapter 57 DAV.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

ALYSSA ANNE YELTON HENSON
Alyssa Anne Yelton Henson, 24, of Look Homeward Drive, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2014. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of William and Marilyn Yelton of Burnsville. She was a 2007 graduate of Mountain Heritage High School, where she was a cheerleader and played softball. Alyssa loved sports and being with her friends. She had attended Mayland Community College. She had been employed at Brookside and Mountain Manor, where she enjoyed giving care to the residents. Alyssa resided in Maryland with her husband while he was on active duty with the Marines before returning to Burnsville in 2011.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her husband: Will Henson; a daughter: Kamilyn Henson of the home; 2 brothers: Jason Yelton of Utah and Ryan Yelton of Burnsville; maternal grandfather: Ronald Gross of Florida; and, aunts and uncles: Billy Gross, Mary Fido, Nancy Carollo, Kim Kolacz and Alecia Powers of California and Allen and Paula Yelton of Spruce Pine.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30PM Tuesday in Bethel Missionary Baptist Church of which she was a member. Rev. Darrin Waldroup will officiate. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2 until 3:30PM Tuesday prior to the service at the church.

HEATHER BOWERS ROBINSON
Heather Bowers Robinson, 42, of Asheville, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at her home. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of Joan McCurry and Ted and Nora Bowers of Burnsville. She was preceded in death by her grandparents: LeRoy and Julie McCurry and Stanley and Joyce Boone.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her son, Marcus Presnell of the home; sisters: Holly Silvers and husband, Robbie, and Whitney Riddle and husband, Brandon; a brother: Teddy Bowers and a special nephew, Lee Silvers all of Burnsville.
A memorial service will be held at 5 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Brian Blankenship will officiate.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

EDWARD (ED) CHERESHKOFF, SR.
Edward (Ed) Chereshkoff, Sr. was born January 5, 1925, at home in Cranford, NJ. He was the youngest of eight children. Growing up Ed worked to help the family. One of his jobs was delivering milk and he would occasionally swipe the frozen cream from the top of the milk jar – Ed always had a sweet tooth. His mother would give him a dime each week that he would spend at the movie theater, watching Flash Gordon all day. During WWII Ed lied about his age and joined the Navy, where he served in the Pacific. He was a boxer. He was a Gunners Mate First Class, and earned two bronze stars, one of which was holding an enemy airman at bay who had tried to climb the ships anchor chain. Ed was honorably discharged at the end of the war, and returned to New Jersey and married his life-long partner, Beatrice. Ed and Bea started a family and in the 1950’s moved to South Florida where they lived for the next 35 years. Ed was a very talented mechanic and started his career in Florida at Tropical Chevrolet. He soon proved to be an equally talented and respected manager, and spent the next 40 years as a service manager for Pontiac and Cadillac. When Ed retired he and Bea moved to Deer Park Lake, NC, where for many years Ed drove a school bus for Mitchell County and the shuttle at the Grove Park Inn.
Ed always enjoyed having family and friends around. All were welcome, plenty of food and drink, and he always toasted with the salutation “Nostrovia”. A central part of life was fishing and boating, and he took great joy in taking folks out fishing. One of his favorite stories was when he took his oldest brother, Steve, deep sea fishing and Steve caught a Wahoo; it always made him smile talking about how much fun Steve had bringing in that fish. Ed was forever puttering around the house, car, boat, his children’s homes – he just couldn’t sit still. He was typically whistling a tune, or a whistle that could be heard blocks away to call us in to dinner. Ed loved Christmas and especially Santa (Sani) Clause, in many ways he was just a big kid. One year, the Lake Deer Park froze and we made a sledding path next to the house from the top of the hill onto the lake. Ed took as many turns on the sled as he could and gleefully yelling each run down “Look our Charlie” and hitting the lake ice spinning around – doing donuts.
Ed was a good man with a big heart. He died Monday, March 10, 2014, at the age of 89. Ed is survived by his wife of 66 years: Beatrice; 3 children: Ed, Jr., Bruce and Kim; 6 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren. We loved Ed very much and he will be dearly missed.
A memorial service will be held at 2PM Saturday, March 15, 2014, in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Joe Bennett will officiate.
The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
BILL STANLEY
Bill Stanley, 79, of Bear Wallow Road went to be with the Lord Sunday, March 9, 2014 at St. Josephs Campus of Mission Hospitals. A native of Wilmington, he was a son of the late William and Lucy Carroll Stanley. He was a US Army Drill Sergeant. He was a former manager of Publix, Lowe’s Foods and Western Sizzlin Steak House in Spruce Pine and a former employee of Ingles and Bi-Lo’s in Burnsville. He was an avid golfer and member of Grassy Creek Country Club. Bill was a member and Sunday School Teacher at West Burnsville Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Shelba Boone Stanley; a daughter: Ginger Ebert and husband, Jeff, of Wilmington; 2 sons: Earl Stanley of Wilmington and Mike Boone and wife, Jennifer, of Burnsville; grandchildren: Morganne Boone, Kyle, Klinton and Ryan Henry, Earl Stanley, Jr. and Brittany Stanley; 2 great grandchildren; a sister: Jo Ann Clark of Wilmington and a brother: Joe Stanley of Sarasota, Fl.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Pastor Charlie Carroway will officiate. Burial will be in the Warner Boone Family Cemetery on Bear Wallow Road.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
