MAX McCURRY

Max McCurry, 77, of Cane Branch, passed away Wednesday, December 4, 2013.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Thad “Tater Bug” and Maude Young McCurry.  Max was a US Navy Veteran and a retired employee of the N. C. Department of Corrections.  He enjoyed farming, his cattle, attending church, politics and his breakfast crowd.

           

Surviving are his children:  Pam Bainbridge of Charlotte, Steve McCurry and wife, Holly, of Asheville and Kim Young and husband, Sam, of Burnsville; 5 grandchildren:  Nicole and Matthew Bainbridge, Kyndall and Jackson McCurry and Joshua Young; a sister:  Louise Shaw and husband, Jack, of Cheraw, SC; his companion:  Margie Patton of Morganton; and a nephew:  Rodney Shaw.

           

Funeral services will be held at 4 PM Friday in Victory Baptist Church of which he was a member.  Rev. Scot Garland will officiate.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

           

The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 4 PM prior to the service at the church.

AMERICA BOGGS

America Boggs, 58, of Burnsville, passed away Monday, December 2, 2013, at Brookside Rehabilitation & Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Norman and Carrie Jones Boggs.

 

Surviving are a sister:  Karen Boggs; and, an aunt:  Mildred Deal, both of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Scot Garland will officiate.  Burial will be in the Verlin Jones Cemetery on Plum Branch.

           

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

PAUL LAWS

Paul Laws, 79, of Green Mountain went home to be with the Lord Saturday, November 30, 2013 at St. Joseph Hospital surrounded by his family.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Ola Laws.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Jeanette Cooper Laws who died February 8, 2013.  He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Parker who died December 18, 2012 and a sister, Betty Deyton.  He was a retired railroad employee with 33 years of service.  Paul’s greatest passion in life was his family, horses, logging and farming.

 

Surviving are a daughter, Linda Biddix and husband, Steve; a son, Mark Laws and wife, Angie, all of Green Mountain; 4 grandchildren:  Brandie, Britney, Sydney and Kylie; 4 great grandchildren:  Kolbey, Jacob, Lucas and Gracie; and a brother, Tom Laws of Hickory.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8 PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Bernie Jones and Roger Thompson will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Wednesday in the Laws Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Tuesday prior to the service at the funeral home.

J. B. FENDER

J. B. Fender, 82, of Bald Creek, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, November 28, 2013, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Clyde and Myrtle Barnes Fender.  He was preceded in death by his sister:   Betty Ann Fender Duncan.  J. B. was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and was a U.S. Army Veteran. 

 

According to his wishes, he was blessed to spend his last days with his wife of 59 years:  Betty Jean Buckner Fender; son:  Bill Fender and wife, Sherry; and a grandson:  Casey Fender, all of Burnsville, and many other friends and family members, including aunts:  Ruth Barnes English and Hazel Barnes Shelton of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Junior Hollifield and Jerry Shelton will officiate.  Burial will be in the Bald Creek Methodist Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

BENNY FENDER

Benny Fender, 78, of the Bald Creek Community, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at his home, surrounded by his family.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Vernon and Mary Wilson Fender.  He was also preceded in death by a sister, Margie Peterson and brothers, Leonard and Dewey Fender.  Benny owned and operated Central Barber Shop in Burnsville and Benny’s Barber Shop at his home.  He was a member of Bald Creek United Methodist Church.

  

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Helen Westall Fender; two daughters: Martha  Huskins and husband, Roger, of Newdale and Mary Beth Fender of Bald Creek; a son: Christopher Fender and wife, Sherri, of Pensacola; five grandchildren: Cody, Jessica, Tara, Ashlynn and Jessie and a great granddaughter: Lyla.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 P. M. Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. A. J. Moore and Joe Bennett will officiate.  Burial will be in the Proffitt Cemetery at Bald Creek.  The family will receive friends from noon until 2 P. M. Saturday, prior to the service, at the funeral home.

INEZ PATTON BANKS

Inez Patton Banks, 66, of Burnsville went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, November 24, 2013 at her home, surrounded by her family.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Gene and Elizabeth Robinson Patton.  She was also preceded in death by a brother, Larry Patton and her second parents Boyd and Pearl Brown Banks.  Inez was a retired employee of Yancey County School System, working in the Cafeteria at Mountain Heritage High School for many years. 

 

Surviving are her husband of 47 years, Charles W. ‘Chip’ Banks; two daughters:  Becky Christopher and husband, Paul, of Vass, NC and Jennifer Young and husband, Chad; and a son:  Jonathan Banks and wife, Tammy, all of Burnsville; a sister:  Anna Lee Ledford and husband, Lawrence, of Asheville; and six granddaughters:  Christy, Megan, Nicole, Ashley, Amber and Alex, two step grandsons: Luke and Gabriel Christopher; a special niece: Laura Huneycutt of Stanfield, NC and special nephew:  Bobby Holcombe of Burnsville.  

 

Funeral services will be held at 6:30 PM Tuesday in West Burnsville Baptist Church of which she was an active member.  Pastor Charlie Carroway and Revs. Ricky Ray and Harold Bennett, Jr. will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Wednesday in the Church Cemetery. Deacons of West Burnsville Baptist Church will serve as pallbearers.

 

The family will receive friends from 5 until 6:30 PM Tuesday at West Burnsville Baptist Church, prior to the service.

VIRGINIA HENSLEY GRIGGS

Virginia Hensley Griggs, 85, of Burnsville, passed away Saturday, November 16, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family.  A native of Burnsville, she was a daughter of the late Carl and Stella Wright Hensley.  She was also preceded in death by her sister, Lucille Harris, and son-in-law, Frank Carroll.  Virginia retired from the Yancey County School System after 44 years of service as Cook and Manager at Burnsville Elementary School. She was a member of West Burnsville Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are her husband of 69 years:  D.T. Griggs; 2 daughters:  Gloria Wilson and husband, Larry, of Burnsville and Diane Carroll of Micaville; 3 sons:  Tommy Griggs and wife, Daphne, Darryl Griggs and wife, Cathy, and Randy Griggs and wife, Kristy, all of Burnsville; 9 grandchildren:  Angie Parker and husband, Jermaine, Candi Fox and husband, Mike, Cindy, Casey, Derrick, A.J., Kaleigh, Tiffany and Frank; 5 great grandchildren:  Brandon, Maci-Drew, Jazmyne, Kenyon and Griffen; 2 sisters:  Irene Souther and Hazel Souther of Burnsville; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7 PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Charlie Carroway will officiate.  Graveside Services will be held at 11 AM Tuesday in the McCracken Cemetery. 

 

The family will receive friends Monday from 5:30 until 7 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

JUDY RUTH CLARK

Judy Ruth Clark, 66, of Bill Allen Branch Road and Tacoma, Washington died on Friday, November 15, 2013 in Burnsville at the home of her mother and surrounded by loving family.  She was born September 15, 1947 in Durant, Oklahoma, the youngest daughter of John Albert Clark and Christine Hudson Clark.  She was preceded in death by her father, John Albert “Pa” Clark and a nephew, Thomas David Barton.

 

Judy is survived by her mother, Christine “Granny” Hudson Clark;  two sisters, Jeannette Frances Clark Maddox of Burnsville and Carole Ann Clark Vrooman of Lewisville, Texas;  three daughters, Christine Denise Hanson and husband Kelly Overing and her two sons, Joshua Thomas Hanson and Wesley Hanson of Anchorage, Alaska; Renee Simmons and husband Robert Allen Simmons and their two children Sarah Renee Simmons and Noah Allen Simmons of Maple Valley, Washington; and Roxan Hartwig of Tacoma, Washington;  niece Angela Dawn Barton Duhe and husband John Kyle Duhe and their children, Paige Christine Duhe, John Richard Jack Duhe and Gibson Kyle Duhe;  niece Karen Marie Maddox Richardson and husband Timothy Arthur Richardson and their children, Darius Kade Richardson and Duncan Tyr Richardson;  nephew John Brandon Barton and wife Vielza and their son, Evan Brandon Barton.

 

Judy was an avid gardener and loved the outdoors.  She lived in Anchorage, Alaska for twenty-five years and enjoyed hiking on the glaciers and watching the moose and grizzly bears.  She was a home care provider in Tacoma, Washington and was also employed by a landscaping company.  Judy was a warm, gentle person who deeply loved her family and friends and in turn was deeply loved by them.  She will be missed by all those who knew and cared for her.

 

Services will be held on a glacier in Alaska at a later date.

DEWEY 'JOBY' SILVERS

Dewey ‘Joby’ Silvers, 80 years young, of Hickory Lane, passed away Tuesday, November 12, 2013.  He was a son of the late Thor and Florence Hensley Silvers of Flag Pond, TN.  Dewey worked for Contel and GTE Telephone companies for 32 years, and was a member of Burnsville Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years.

 

Dewey is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley Shelton Silvers of Burnsville; a son, Faron Silvers of Burnsville; a daughter, Debbie Burke of Simpsonville, SC; 2 granddaughters; 2 grandsons; 3 great-granddaughters; 2 great-grandsons; a sister, Dell Ledford of Erwin, TN; four brothers, Harold, Jack and Worley Silvers of Flag Pond and Luther Silvers of Longmont, CO.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Ricky Ray will officiate.  Burial will be in the Pate Cemetery on Bee Log Hill Road.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

HATTIE ATKINS

Hattie Atkins, 85, formerly of Yancey County, passed away Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.  She was a daughter of the late Arthur and Grace McAllister Silvers.

 

Surviving are two daughters:  Linda Wykle of Greeneville, TN and Pam Rathburn of Hickory; a son:  Gene Evans of Burnsville; a sister:  Helen Evans of Burnsville; 2 brothers:  Charles Silvers and James Silvers of Burnsville; 6 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and a great-great grandson.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Burial will be in the Burton Cemetery on Lickskillet Road.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
