FAYE HIGGINS MORROW

Faye Higgins Morrow, age 87, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 13, 2016. She was surrounded by her loving family, who will greatly miss her.

A native of Yancey County, she was the daughter of the late Gus and Bessie Higgins and the wife of the late Breece Morrow, who passed away in 1988. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Higgins Yates.

Faye, lovingly known as “Nanny”, loved her family, flowers, and in her later years, crocheting. She enjoyed sharing her creations with family and friends.

Surviving are a brother, Stanley Higgins; a son, Danny Morrow and wife Becky; two daughters, Cathy Franklin and husband Rickey; and Robbie Renfro and husband Marvin all of Burnsville. She also took joy in her nine grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and her special little dog, Mimi.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, September 15, 2016 in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Phillip Hughes will officiate.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Private graveside services will be held in the Breece Morrow family cemetery on Banks Creek Road.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Hospice of the Blue Ridge for the excellent care given to our Nanny. We also thank Smoky Ridge Health and Rehabilitation for the care and kindness shown to her during her short stay there.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of the Blue Ridge, 236 Hospital Drive, Spruce Pine, NC 28777.

EDGAR BYRD

Edgar Byrd, 76, of Burnsville, unexpectedly went to his heavenly home to be with the Lord Monday, September 12, 2016, at Mission Hospitals Memorial Campus.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Carl and Dora Crane Byrd.  He was preceded in death by sisters:  Glessie Higgins, Gladys Tipton and Esther Hughes; and, brothers:  Rothie and Dewey Byrd.  He was a member of Merrimon Avenue Baptist Church and a member of the Paul Robinson Sunday School Class for the past 25 years.

 

Edgar was the owner and operator of North End Barber Shop in Asheville for 45 years.  He always loved his customers and friends that came by to drink coffee and share their stories with him early in the morning.  Edgar served in the U.S. Navy as a C.B.  He was a loving husband.

 

Surviving is his wife of 51 years:  Lois Styles Byrd; and, several nieces and nephews, who were always special to him.

 

A celebration of his life will be held at 3PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.   Revs. Worth Emory and Joshua Styles will officiate.

 

The family will receive friends from 2 until 3PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

NELL BEAVER BRYANT

Nell Beaver Bryant, 89, of Murphytown, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, September 7, 2016, at Smoky Ridge Health & Rehabilitation.  She was a native of Yancey County.  Nell was a daughter of the late Will and Sarah Laws Beaver, and the wife of Arthur Bryant who died in 1994.  She was also preceded in death by her son:  Leonard Bryant; and, 3 sisters and 2 brothers.  Nell attended Locust Grove Church.

 

Surviving are a daughter:  Shirley Peterson and husband, Calvin, of Green Mountain; a daughter-in-law:  Carolyn Bryant of Poplar; 4 grandsons:  David Peterson, Roger Peterson, Leonard Bryant and Jeff Bryant; a special great granddaughter:  Tyara P. Hughes; 6 other great grandchildren; a sister:  Jean Gibson of Weaverville; and a special friend:  Blanche Murphy of Murphytown.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Tommy Murphy will officiate.  A graveside service will be at 11AM Saturday in White Oak Flats Cemetery.  Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

Geraldine Silver

Geraldine Silver, 84, of Bearwallow Road, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday September 3, 2016 at the home of her daughter.   A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Bill and Gladys Waycaster McLaughlin.  She was the wife of Dee Silver who died in 1994.   She was also preceded in death by a son Terry "Tadpole" Silver, son-in-law Roy Jones, Brothers: Vernon Waycaster, Coy McLaughlin, Harold McLaughlin, Eddie McLaughlin and a baby brother, A sister Beth Knight. Geraldines life was dedicated to the Lord and her family.

Surviving are a daughter: Pat Jones of Avery County. A son: Rev. Jackie Silver and wife Linda of Burnsville. A daughter-in-law: Cathy Carroll of Burnsville. 11 Grandchildren, 9 Great-grandchildren and 4 Great-great-grandchildren. A sister: Pat Lockhart of Asheville. Two brothers: James McLaughlin of Landrum, SC and Emory McLaughlin of Arden.  Numerous neices and nephews also survive.

Funeral Services will be held at 7 PM Monday September 5, 2016 in the Crabtree Baptist Church of which she was a member.  Her son Rev. Jackie Silver and Rev. Dale Banks will officiate.   The family will recieve friends from 5:30 until 7 PM at the Church.  Burial will be at 11 am Tuesday September 6 in the Church Cemetery. 

LAVONDA MEJIA

Lavonda Mejia, 36, of Woodland Circle, passed away Sunday, August 28, 2016 at John F. Keever Solace Center in Asheville. A native of McDowell County, she was a daughter of the late Joe and Debra Gray Horne.

Surviving are her husband Oscar Vasquez; children: Junior, Flora, Jose, Antonia, Donella, David and Shala; and two brothers: B. J. Horne and Jason Horne.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Burial will be in the Marietta Atkins Cemetery.

KATHLEEN HENSLEY PONDER

Kathleen Hensley Ponder, 87, of the Fox Creek Community, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, August 27, 2016.  A native of Buncombe County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Mamie Penix Hensley.  Kathleen was the wife of the late Willie Jay Ponder who died in 2008. She was also preceded in death by her son-in-law:  Junior Cooper; 5 brothers:  Junior Hensley, Richard Hensley, Pritchard Hensley, Ed Hensley and Cecil Hensley; and a sister:  Georgia Gaddy.  She loved her family very much.

 

Surviving are a daughter:  Debra Cooper of Mars Hill; 2 grandsons:  Shannon Cooper and wife, Kedren, of Mars Hill and Brandon Cooper and wife, Christy, of Green Mountain; a very special great grandson:  Easton Cooper; sisters:  Lula Roland, Mary Gosnell and Peggy Franklin; several nieces and nephews; and, a special friend and caregiver:  Sue Ponder.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Tommy Murphy and Rothie Wilson will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Wednesday in Fox Creek Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Monday at the funeral home.

E L MILLER, Sr.

E. L. Miller, Sr., 91, of Weaverville, formerly of Yancey County, died Friday, August 26, 2016 at John F. Keever Solace Center, surrounded by his family. He was born February 21, 1925 in Yancey County, and had been a resident of Buncombe County for the last 23 years. He was a son of the late Rexter and Ettie Adkins Miller and was also preceded in death by a sister and four brothers.

Mr. Miller was a devoted Christian and loved his family. He was employed as a mechanic for NCDOT and retired after 39 years service.  He was a member of Millers Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Marie Honeycutt Miller: daughters; Judy Levi and husband Herbert; Janet Worley and husband Everett and Betty Tipton and husband Kenneth; sons: E. L. Miller, Jr and wife Lisa and Casper Miller and wife Rebecca; sisters: Fern Whitson and Nell Whitson; ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Monday, August 29, 2016 in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Avenue, in Weaverville.  Rev. Roy Whitson will officiate.  Burial will be in West Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 3 until 5 PM Sunday, August 28, 2016 at the funeral home.

JOHN P. YOUNG

John P. Young, 81, of Weaverville, went to meet his wife, Kathy, in their Heavenly home on Monday, August 22, 2016.

A native of Yancey County, John lived in Weaverville since 1969.  He retired from law enforcement after 20 years of service with the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles-License and Theft Division, and the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Department.  He worked independently and for various car dealerships as a salesman.  He was the owner of John Young Apartments on Main Street in Weaverville.  He was a member of Northpoint Baptist Church.

John loved his dogs and enjoyed buying and selling cars.  He was an avid NASCAR fan.  John also enjoyed hosting political rallies and had an interest in politics.

John was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Kathy; his mother, Minnie Young; and his father, Ed Young.

Surviving are his daughter: Jennifer Mashburn (David) of Burnsville; grandchildren: Shaley Holmes (Cameron) of Statesville, Savannah Haney of Swannanoa, and Jacob Mashburn of Burnsville; and a great-grandson, Ty Holmes, of Statesville.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Sunday, August 28, 2016 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home in Burnsville.  Rev. Clark Henderson will officiate.  Burial will be in the McCracken Cemetery in Burnsville.  The family will receive friends from 5 until 7:30 PM Saturday, August 27, 2016 at the First Baptist Church of Weaverville, 63 North Main Street.

CAROLYN BLINDA HONEYCUTT

Carolyn Williams Honeycutt, 76, of Fairview, went to be with the Lord, Monday,  August 22, 2016, at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was raised by Leslie Shepherd.  She was preceded in death by her brother:  Isaac Uriah Williams, Jr.; a grandson:  Byron Joseph Honeycutt; and, a sister-in-law:  Thanna H. Arrowood.  Carolyn was a member of New Grace Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of 54 years:  Rev. Bobby Honeycutt, Sr.; children:  Blinda Teague and husband, Kenny, of Fairview, Sandra Arrowood and husband, Bryan, of Black Mountain, Bobby Honeycutt, Jr. and wife, Heather, of Fairview,  and Steven Honeycutt and wife, Valerie, of Asheville; 14 grandchildren;  8 great grandchildren and 2 expectant great grandchildren; and, special friends:  Bobby and Lucille Martin of Virginia.

Funeral services will be held at 3PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. John Honeycutt will officiate.  Burial will be in the Robinson Cemetery on Bakers Creek.

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home and at other times the family will be at her home.               

DEBRA RAMSEY

Debra Ramsey, 61, of Fletcher, passed away unexpectedly Monday, August 15, 2016, at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Bruce and Earlene Phillips Ramsey.  She was also preceded in death by a sister:  Marcia Allison; and, a brother:  Bruce “Buzzy” Ramsey.  Debra was a member of Arden Missionary Baptist Church, and had been attending Liberty Baptist Church.  She was a former employee of Cranston Print Works and World of Clothing.

 

Surviving are sisters:  Sharon Kast and husband, Thomas, Cathy Creasman and Shelly Connor and husband, Greg; and brothers:  David Ramsey and wife, Lorna, and Mike Ramsey.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 1PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Pastor Robert Garren will officiate.   Burial will be in the Watts Cemetery on Lotties Creek.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
