NANCY ANN RICHARDSON

Nancy Ann Richardson, of Phillips Knob Road, went home to the Lord, Friday October 25, 2013, at her home.  She was born in Cleveland, Ohio on December 29, 1934, the daughter of Glenn and Katherine Bohrer. She was the owner of “Nancy’s Nearly New” clothing store, serving the Burnsville community from 1992 until she retired.  Nancy was a member of Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church, and a joyful volunteer with the youth program “Train Up”/“Living Inside Out”, and “Good Eats”.  She was a “Walk to Emmaus” graduate, and delighted in spending time with her family. 

 

She is survived by her sons, Don Richardson of Greensboro granddaughters, Jessie of Greensboro, and Lori, stationed in San Diego, CA. and David and daughter-in-law, Cindy Richardson, of Burnsville;  granddaughter, Serena and husband, Alan Lapp, and great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Kaley all of Orange City, Florida, and step-granddaughters, Carmen and Tomika of Asheville.  She is also survived by her sister, Cindy Murphy of Hudson, Ohio, sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Tom Kubit of Catawba Island, Ohio, a brother, Thomas Bohrer of Parma, Ohio, and numerous nieces, and nephews.

 

A “Celebration of Life” service will be held at 11 am, Saturday, November 2, 2013 in the Family Life Center at Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church kitchen fund or the "Good Eats” program

CLIFFORD ALVA HOPE

Clifford Alva Hope, 65, of Pompano Beach, Florida and Mt. Mitchell Lands passed away Saturday, October 19, 2013 in Pompano Beach.  A native of Charlotte, he was a son of the late William Torrence and June Robinson Hope.  A US Army Veteran, he was the CFO at Power Financial Credit Union and a Certified Police Officer with Plantation, FL for 34 years.  He was a graduate of UNC Charlotte and Wisconsin School of Banking.

 

Surviving are his wife, Patricia Van Dyke Hope; a son, Christopher William Hope and wife, Kelli, of Crystal River, FL; a daughter, Angela Hope Eskew and husband, Chad, of Warrenton, VA; 3 grandchildren, Andrew, Mitchell and Alyssa Hope; and 2 sisters, Elaine Gladden and Brenda Harkey and husband, Alan, all of Charlotte.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Saturday, October 26, 2013, in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Forrest Westall will officiate.  Burial will be in the Academy Cemetery.

LOVIE ARROWOOD LAWS

Lovie Arrowood Laws, 89, of Green Mountain, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, October 19, 2013, at her home, surrounded by her loving family, her Pastor and his wife.  She was the wife of Roy  David Laws who passed away June 2, 1985.  A native of Yancey County, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Abby Berry Arrowood.  She was also preceded in death by sisters:  Lellis Mitchell, Joy Robinson and Kate Hensley; a brother:  Bud Arrowood; and an infant great granddaughter.

 

Surviving are her daughters:  Norma Lee Fox and husband, Dan, Jena Vee Blevins and husband, Earl, and Stella June Cooper all of Green Mountain, Vernis Jean Norris and husband, Bill, of Thomasville, GA; sister:  Ida Ruth Phillips; grandchildren:  Carol Fox Robinson and husband, Stacy, Marie Fox Miller, Dona Fox and fiancé, Bronson Gross, David C. Blevins and wife, Dawn, Doyle S. Blevins and wife, Rebecca, Johnny Duane, Gary Joe, Billy Jack and Roy Jason Cooper and wife, Cristy, Melissa and Tim Turbyfill and Sherry Lynn Rock; great grandchildren:  Kristen, Bethany, Lauren, and Samantha Robinson, Tyler Blevins and wife, Mary, Kay Lee Blevins, Sean and Ryan Meadows, Caleb Brown, Kelsy and Tyler Cooper, Shelby and Jacob Cooper, Dante, Gracie and  LylaTurbyfill; great-great grandchild:  Dorian Meadows; step grandchildren:  Teri Rosa and husband, Tom, and Joey Norris; step great grandchildren: Allyson and husband, Cory, Cortney and Brent; step great-great grandson:  Brody; several nieces and nephews and lots of friends and family also survive.

 

Funeral Services will be held at 7 PM Thursday in the Zion Baptist Church of which she was a member.  Revs. Junior Honeycutt, Rick Honeycutt and Ricky Hensley will officiate.  Graveside services will be held at 11 AM Friday in the Laws Family cemetery on Upper Pig Pen.

 

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 PM Thursday prior to the service at the Church.  

JENNIE PENLAND

Jennie Penland, 89, of Horton Creek joined Jesus and her heavenly family Monday, September 30, 2013 at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Cheet and Texie Robinson Holcombe and the wife of Brooks Penland who passed away in 2007.  She was also preceded in death by brothers:  Lester, Liston and Charles Holcombe.

 

Surviving are a son, Donald Penland and wife, Brenda; and a grandson, Darren Penland and wife, Rica, all of Burnsville; and 4 sisters:  Eloise Austin of Burnsville, Grace Deweese of Kannapolis, Mildred Haas and Georgia Sherlin and husband, Jim, of Arden.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Grandson, Darren Penland will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 10:30 AM Friday in the Academy Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 PM Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home.

DIMPLE DILLINGER

Dimple Dillinger, 73, of Lower Browns Creek, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, September 29, 2013, at Carolinas Medical Center in Concord.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Willard and Alice Wilson Woody, and the wife of James Dillinger, who died in 1977.  She was also preceded in death by a sister:  Ethel Carroll; and, a brother:  Jack Woody.  Dimple was an active member of Liberty Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.  She loved her family and put the needs of others before her own.

Surviving are a son:  Tim Dillinger and wife, Amber, and a granddaughter:  Madison Dillinger of Kannapolis; a sister:  Hazel Fox of Burnsville; and, many nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 8PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Scottie Jenkins and Randy Randolph will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Thursday in the Robinson Cemetery on Halls Chapel Road.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Wednesday, prior the service at the funeral home.

JOHN EVANS

John Evans, 90, of Coxes Creek Road, went home Tuesday, September 24, 2013.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Latt W. and Fannie Duncan Evans.  He was the loving husband of Ethel Allie Evans who died in 2006.  He was also preceded in death by brothers, Ned and Roy Evans and a sister, Ruth Smith.  He was a WWII Marine Veteran, wounded at Okinawa.  John was a member of Rebels Creek Baptist Church, an avid reader, enjoyed gardening and dearly enjoyed being a “grand daddy.”

 

Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Freeman and husband, Rev. GE Freeman, of Burnsville; two grandsons, John Mark Freeman and wife, Sherry, of Spruce Pine and Matthew S. Freeman and wife, Sandy, of Burke County; a step great granddaughter,  Sabrena Burleson; and two brothers, Frank and Bill Evans, both of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. GE Freeman and Paul Silver will officiate.  Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday in the Jacks Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7:00 PM Friday prior to the service at the funeral home.

WILLIAM RODNEY HOWELL

William Rodney Howell, 71, formerly of Burnsville, passed away Friday, September 20, 2013.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late John Roy and Margie Huskins Howell and was also preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth E. Howell.  He was a US Air Force Veteran.

 

He is survived by his siblings:  James R. Howell, Dennis R. Howell, Diane Richards and John T. Howell.

 

At his request, no services are planned.

LUCILLE WILSON CATE

Lucille Wilson Cate of the Pensacola Community, passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Frank E. and Inez Sturgill Wilson.  She was also preceded in death by a sister, Louise Wilson Pruett and brother-in-law, Olden Pruett.  Lucille retired from Sealtest-Kraft Foods after twenty years service in Asheville and ten years service in Charlotte.  She attended Pensacola United Methodist Church.

 

Surviving are a sister, Ruby Styles and husband, Jay; and a brother, Jerry Wilson and wife, Betty, of Pensacola; a nephew, Dennis Pruett and wife, Carolyn, of Knoxville; nieces: Debby Graham and husband, Bill, of Weaverville, Mary Beth Thurman and husband, David, of Charlotte; great nephews:  Jason Pruett of Knoxville, Will Graham and wife, Shelley, of Weaverville and Thomas Thurman of Charlotte; and great nieces:  Deborah and Mary Thurman of Charlotte.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Pastor A. J. Moore will officiate.  Burial will be in the Big Tom Wilson Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 PM Friday prior to the service at the funeral home.

BETTY YOUNG DEYTON

Betty Young Deyton, 73, of Burnsville, NC passed away at her home Sunday morning September 1, 2013 after a long battle with ovarian cancer.

 

She was born to the late Friel and Maphra Young of Burnsville on November 30, 1939. She graduated from Clearmont High School in 1957 and received her degree in Elementary Education from Miligan College in 1964. For 34 years, she taught many wonderful young people at Clearmont School before retiring in 1994.

 

Betty was a member of Green Mountain Presbyterian Church. She loved flowers, her grandchildren, and her little dog, Molly.

 

She is survived by her devoted husband, U.B. Deyton of Burnsville; loving children, Chris Biggerstaff of Burnsville, Shelly and husband, Sandy Bailey, of Burnsville, Rodney and wife, Beth Deyton, of Burnsville; four grandchildren, Alex and Tessa Biggerstaff, Drew Hoilman, and Reed Deyton; and a twin brother, Bill Young and wife, Betty Lou, of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8:00 pm Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Bill Whiteside and Joe Bennett will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am Thursday in the Peterson-McCourry Cemetery on Pound Mill Branch Road.

 

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 pm prior to service at the funeral home.

VELMA HARDING

Velma Harding, 76, of Burnsville, entered eternity Saturday, August 31, 2013, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Wesley and Carra Robinson Deyton, and the wife of Ted Harding, who died in 1982.  She was also preceded in death by sisters:  Etta Johnson and Chloe Bennett; and, brothers:  Cecil, Roy, Clifford, Clarence, Herman, Craig and Jimmy Deyton.  Velma was a former employee of Mohasco, a retired employee of Glen Raven Mills and after retirement was an employee of Pine Valley Motel in Spruce Pine.

 

Those left to cherish her memory are her son:  Jeff Harding and wife, Darla; grandsons:  Jeffery Harding of Spruce Pine and Jameson Harding of Las Vegas, Nevada; a sister:  Kate Laws of Green Mountain; a dear niece:  Sandy Hilemon and husband, Maurice; and, several other nieces, nephews and close friends.

 

A celebration of life will be held at 3:30 PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Burial will be in the Fred Young Cemetery at Pleasant Gap.

 

The family will receive friends from 2 until 3:30 PM Tuesday prior to the service at the funeral home.
