MARVIN JETER ROBINSON

Marvin Jeter Robinson, 66, of Burnsville passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013 at the John F. Keever Solace Center.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late R. C. and Doris Stamey Robinson.  He was also preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Alton Robinson.  He was a member of Blue Rock Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are 2 daughters:  Stacey Cooper and husband, Johnny, of Marion and April Brown and husband, Roger, of Swannanoa; 5 grandchildren:  Dustin McMahan, Morgan, Johnny and Landree Cooper and Wyntr Brown; a great grandson:  Briar Cox; 2 sisters:  Jane Presnell and husband, Larry, and Kathy Laws and husband, J.D., of Newdale; and former wife and best friend, Carolyn Robinson of Bostic.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Adam Brewer and Woody Dillingham will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Saturday in the Blue Rock Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Friday prior to the service at the funeral home.  At other times, the family will be at the home of Jane Presnell on Blue Rock Road.

RUTH JONES SIMMONS

Ruth Jones Simmons, 75, of Celo, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at her home,  surrounded by her family.  A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Carl and Maude Hughes Jones.  She was preceded in death by brothers:  Ray Hughes and Newton and Creed Jones; and, a sister:  Title Hughes.  Ruth was a retired employee of Baxters.  She was a member of Celo United Methodist Church.  Music played a very important part in Ruth’s life.  She enjoyed singing gospel music, having appeared on the Arthur Smith Show and Carolina Barn Dance.

 

Surviving are her husband of 53 years:  Phillip Simmons; children:  Patty Fisher and husband, Kenneth, of Linville Falls, Phillip Simmons and wife, Tammy, of Spruce Pine, Susan Simmons, John Simmons and wife, Susan, and Becky Hughes and husband, Robbie, all of Celo; 9 grandchildren; a great grandchild; and, a brother:  Roy Jones and wife, Pat, of Avery County.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Luther Carver and Tommy Robertson will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Friday in Carroway Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

GORDON D. HENSLEY

Gordon D. “Runt” Hensley, 65, of McKinney Branch, passed away Friday, May 17, 2013, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Frank and Vivian McIntosh Hensley.  He was also preceded in death by his stepmother:  Ollie Lovin Hensley; and, brothers:  Dean, Bill and Randy Hensley.  Gordon was a Vietnam U. S. Army Veteran.

 

Surviving are 4 brothers:  Robert Hensley of Tucson, AZ, Roy Lee Hensley of Mars Hill, Edwin Hensley of Weaverville and Pete Hensley of Burnsville; a sister:  Diane Franklin of Burnsville; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Bud Edwards will officiate.  Military graverites will be conducted by Sgt. E. L. Randolph Chapter 57, DAV at 11AM Tuesday in the Marietta Atkins Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

CONRAD R. CHANEY

Conrad R. Chaney, 67, of Rock Hill, SC, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, May 15, 2013 in CMC Pineville Hospital.  A native of Lexington, KY, he was a son of the late Gifford and Velma Rice Chaney.  He was also preceded in death by a brother, Gordon Chaney.  He was an Air Force Veteran.

 

Surviving are his wife, Wanda Johnson Chaney; 2 sons:  Jeff Chaney and wife, Katie, of Lexington, KY and Jon Chaney and wife, Carisa, of Georgetown, KY; 3 step daughters:  Machelle Brinkley of Davidson, NC, De De Wilson of Weaverville and Stephanie Talbott and husband, Shawn, of Farmville, NC; 3 grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren; 1 step great-granddaughter and 1 special niece also survives.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Dale Banks will officiate.  Burial will be in the Crabtree Baptist Church Cemetery with military grave rites conducted by Sgt. E. L. Randolph, Chapter 57 DAV.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

MARY POWELL

Mary Powell, 87, of Burnsville, passed away Thursday, May 9, 2013 at the home of her son.  A native of Orlando, Florida, she was the wife of the late Marvin Powell.

 

Surviving are her sons:  Ron Powell and wife, Minnie, of Burnsville and John Powell of Orlando; a daughter:  Evelyn Liebow and husband, Paul, of Orlando; 3 granddaughters:  Courtney and Katey Powell and Sarah Matloff.

 

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 PM Wednesday, May 15, 2013 in College Park Baptist Church in Orlando.  Burial will be in the Woodlawn Memorial Park in Gotha, Florida. 

 

The family will receive friends from 10:30 AM until 12:00 PM prior to the service at the church. 

 

Funeral services and burial will be under the direction of Carey Hand Cox-Parker Funeral Home in Winter Park, Florida.

CHRISTINE KNIGHT

Clara Christine Neill Knight, affectionately known as “Bow” to family and friends, passed away May 6, 2013 in Concord, NC after battling Alzheimer’s disease for almost 6 years.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Ralph and Elizabeth Gibbs Neill.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas W. Knight, Jr.; 2 brothers:  Charles Neill and Ralph Neill, Jr.; and 2 sisters:  Mary Helen Prince and Elizabeth Bullock.  Christine graduated from Bald Creek High School and Appalachian State Teachers College.  She taught in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system.

 

Surviving are her son:  Thomas W. Knight III and his wife, Cynthia; a grandson:  Thomas W. Knight IV; a granddaughter:  Cornelia E. Knight of Harrisburg, NC; a brother: James Neill and a sister:  Linda Neill of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Friday, May 10, 2013 in Bald Creek United Methodist Church. 

Rev. A. J. Moore will officiate.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends following the service.

MARY ELLEN EDWARDS

Mary Ellen Austin Edwards, 70, of Pensacola Road, Burnsville passed away Thursday, May 2, 2013 at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Doug and Ora Wilson Austin.  She was the wife of Hubert Edwards who died in 2010.  She was a retired employee of Glen Raven Mills.  Mary was a loving and caring person.  She loved her dogs.

 

Surviving are a son;  Randall Edwards and wife, Jean, a daughter:  Linda McCurry; 2 grandchildren:  B. J. McCurry and Asia Edwards; a great grandson:  Braxtan Ceyth McCurry all of Burnsville; 2 sisters:  Bergie Higgins of Burnsville and Estelle Buckner of Black Mountain.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3 PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Donald Whitson will officiate.  Burial will be in the Bailey Hill Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

MYRAH FAYE BURTON HOWELL

Myrah Faye Howell, 96, of the Bald Creek Community passed peacefully Monday, April 29, 2013 at The Oaks in Brevard.  Born on May 9, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Robert Cecil and Ida Proffitt Burton and resided in Bald Creek most of her life.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Rassie H. Howell, former principal of Bald Creek School; a brother:  Harold P. Burton and sisters: Mary Cecil Severs, Ruby Bailes and Ruth Wallen.

 

Surviving are her sons:  Jack Howell and wife, Mary, of Columbus, OH and Jimmie Howell and wife, Sandy, of Brevard; two grandchildren:  Natalie Hickman of Columbus, Ohio and Jamie Howell and wife, Sherry, of Knoxville; great grandchildren:  Jack Hickman and Madison and Andrew Howell.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev A. J. Moore will officiate.  Burial will be in the Burton Family Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

BULO RIDDLE

Bulo Riddle, 85, of Holly, Michigan, passed away Saturday, April 27, 2013 in Michigan.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late James and Serena Hughes Riddle.  He was also preceded in death by brothers:  Lee Riddle and Ben Riddle and sisters:  Viola Johnson, Maude Riddle and Martha Shipley.  Mr. Riddle was a WWII Army Veteran having served in Germany with Special Forces.  He has been in Michigan since 1952; first, with Pontiac Division of General Motors, and later, in highway construction until his retirement.

 

Surviving is a son:  Alfred Mallet of Hillman, MI.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Military grave rites will be held at 2 PM Saturday in the Riddle-Hughes Cemetery on Upper Doe Bag conducted by Sgt. E. L. Randolph, Chapter 57 DAV.

PAULINE CHANDLER LOCUST

Pauline Murphy Chandler Locust, 82, of Morganton, went to be with her Heavenly Father, Friday, April 26, 2013 at Autumn Care in Drexel.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence and Dora Self Murphy.

 

Surviving are 3 daughters: E Jeannie Swann and Peggy Thomas of Morganton and Teresa Teseniar of Marion;  2 sons: Eddie and Douglas Chandler of Burnsville; 4 sisters: Rena Mace, Shirley Loftis and Dorothy Young of Burnsville and Cartha Biddix of Statesville; 4 grandchildren:  Yvonne Swann, Tiffany Rochester and Dennis Teseniar of Morganton and Lisa Teseniar of Marion, and 4 great grandchildren.

 

A graveside service will be held at 2 PM Sunday, April 28, 2013 in the Goode Cemetery with the Rev. Kent Murphy officiating.

Memorials may be made to Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home to assist with funeral expenses.
