RALPH GRIFFITH

Ralph Griffith, 93, of Burnsville passed away Thursday, January 17, 2013 at Asheville VA Medical Center.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Dolph and Nora Harris Griffith and the husband of Vera Hughes Griffith who died in 2008.  He was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kimberly Hallman; a sister, Reba Bean; and a brother, Edgar Griffith.  He was a World War II Army Veteran.  Ralph was a member of West Burnsville Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are a daughter:  Louetta Stamey and husband, Keith, of Asheville; 2 sons:  Jerry Griffith and wife, Dianne, of Asheville and David Griffith and wife, Linda, of Burnsville; a sister:  Grace Silver of Burnsville; a brother:  Jack Griffith of Granite Falls; 10 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and a special friend: Frances McCurry.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Pastor Charlie Carroway will officiate.  Burial will be in the Hughes Cemetery at Pleasant Gap.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times, will be at the home of his son, David Griffith, 3695 Bolens Creek Road.

DOROTHY FOX

Dorothy Fox, 85, of the Fox Creek Community went to be with the Lord Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at Madison Health and Rehab after a short illness.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Pierson and Jaylina McKinney Chandler and the wife of George Louis Fox who died in 2003.  She was also preceded in death by 7 brothers and sisters and two great grandchildren.

 

Surviving are two daughters:  Mary Griffin and husband, Richard, of Parrottsville, TN and Elaine Cooper and husband, Robert, of Green Mountain; 3 sons:  Eddie Bert Foxx and wife, Pat, of Asheville, Roger Fox and wife, Margaret, of Burnsville, Jeff Fox and wife, Rhonda, of Burnsville; 16 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren; a sister:  Carolyn Shepherd and husband, Bobby, of Burnsville and a brother, Donald Chandler and wife, Marietta, of Weaverville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Rotha Wilson will officiate.  Burial will be in the Fox Creek Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Saturday at the funeral home. 

WILLAREE ROBINSON

Willaree Metcalf Robinson, 81, of Mars Hill, passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at the residence of her son, Roger Robinson.  A native of Madison County, she was the daughter of the late Waylon and Maude Metcalf and the wife of J. F. Robinson who died in 2000.  She was also preceded in death by a brother, Theron Metcalf.  Willaree was a long time member and pianist at Cane River Baptist Church and later a member at Mars Hill Baptist Church.  For many years, she and her husband ran several successful businesses in Cane River and Mars Hill.  She was widely recognized as the proprietor of the Robinson’s Four Seasons Shop in Mars Hill.  

Surviving are a son, Roger Waylon Robinson and wife, Rhonda, of Mars Hill; a daughter, Linda Kay Robinson of Blowing Rock; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Roger Robinson and Casey Ryan Robinson, both of Mars Hill; six great grandchildren, Tate, Laney, Carly, Cash, Tucker and Cutter; and a sister, Georgina Metcalf Wheeler of Mars Hill.
      

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm Thursday, January 17 in the Paint Gap Baptist Church Cemetery on Crooked Creek Road.  Rev. Ronnie Robinson will officiate.  A reception will follow the service in the fellowship hall of Paint Gap Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to CarePartners Hospice, 68 Sweeten Creek Road, Asheville, NC. 28803, who was so helpful to the Robinson family.

TEXIE GURLEY GEOUGE

Texie Gurley Geouge, 65, of the South Toe Community went to be with her Lord and Savior on January 13, 2013.  A native of Yancey County, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Breida Parker Gurley.  She was also preceded in death by a son: Charles Wayne Geouge, Jr., and brothers: Wade, Jim and Morris Gurley.  She was a lifetime member of Browns Creek Baptist Church.  She taught the primary Bible School Class for 44 years.  She loved working in her flowers and cooking for those in her community and church.  Texie was a loving wife, mother and mammaw and a friend to all who knew her.  She always had a smile on her face and a kind word to say.

 

Surviving are her husband of 48 years:  Charles Geouge; a daughter and son-in-law:  Charlene and Jackie Briggs of Burnsville; two lovely grandchildren:  SR Dillon Briggs, US Navy, stationed in Great lake, Illinois and Caitlin Briggs of Burnsville; a special young boy, Colton Brinkley; daughter-in-law:  Patricia Thompson; sister:  Millie Silvers; brother:  Dan Gurley all of Burnsville and many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews and church family and friends.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8 PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Donald Davis and Charlie Carroway will officiate.  Graveside services will be held at 11 AM Wednesday in the Gurley Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Tuesday prior to the service at the funeral home.

MAUDE HUGHES DULANEY

On January 13, 2013, Maude Hughes Dulaney left the bonds of earth for the splendor of Heaven.  There she met her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and was reunited with her husband, Lee, and other family and friends.  Maude’s chief occupation was to see that her family was well fed and taken care of. “MAMA, YOU DID A GREAT JOB, THANK YOU.”

 

Left to cherish her memory, are a daughter:   Willa Dean Robinson and husband, Euranious; sons:  Roy Dulaney and wife, Beverly, Ted Dulaney, and Charles Dulaney; granddaughter:  Renee Higgins and husband, Michael; great grandson:  Justin Higgins; sisters:  Ellen Bradley and Betty Hylemon all of Burnsville. 

 

Born April 1, 1921, Maude was the daughter of the late Percy and Nettie Briggs Hughes.  She was also preceded in death by a sister:  Nan Gardner and brothers:   Jason, Verlin and Robert Hughes.

 

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday in the Shoal Creek Baptist Church of which she was the oldest original member.  Revs. Dick Westbrook and Dallas Renfro will officiate.  Burial will be in the Dulaney Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.  At other times, the family will be at the home of Willa Dean Robinson, 141 River Look Drive.

BELLE WHEELER

Clara Belle Silvers Wheeler, 84, of Burnsville, passed away Friday, January 4, 2013, at Madison Health & Rehabilitation.  A native of Yancey County, she was the wife of Loyd Wheeler who passed away July 30, 1993, and the daughter of the late Bradley and Annie Silvers.  She was also preceded in death by an infant son (Loyd Edward) and four brothers.

 

Surviving are two sons:  Ken and Norma of Burnsville and Gene and Audrey of Mars Hill; a daughter:  Margie and Jerry Arrowood of Weaverville; three grandchildren:  Curtis, Terry and Melissa; five great grandchildren; six sisters; and, two brothers.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Dr. Jim McCoy will officiate.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.  A graveside service will be at 2:30PM Sunday in Higgins Community Cemetery with Rev. Curtis Wheeler (grandson) officiating.

The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to Madison Health & Rehabilitation staff.  They were truly awesome, amazing and wonderful.  God really blessed our family through this great staff.  Everyone was especially wonderful in taking care of our needs, showing love, compassion, and professionalism during this time.

GRACE BAILEY WOODY

Grace Bailey Woody, 93, of the Jacks Creek Community, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, January 3, 2013 in Mountain Manor Assisted Living Center.  A native of Yancey County, she was the daughter of the late Lester and Margrett Griffith Bailey, and the wife of Nelson Woody who died in 1993.  She was also preceded in death by a brother:  Rothie Bailey and two sisters:  Ruby Briggs and Irene Riddle.  She attended West Burnsville Baptist Church.  Grace enjoyed cooking, gardening and helping her husband on their dairy farm.

 

Surviving are her son:  Donald Woody and wife, Anna; two granddaughters:  Christy Woody Wilson and husband, Stewart, and Cindy Woody Wilson and husband, Denny, and a special great grandson:  Luke Wilson all of Burnsville.

 

A graveside service will be held at 2 PM Sunday in the Jacks Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.  Revs. Denny Wilson and Charlie Carroway will officiate.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7 PM Saturday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.

PEGGY BRYANT

Peggy Bryant, 70, of Little Creek went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, January 1, 2013.  A native of Yancey County, she was the daughter of the late Elizabeth Freeman and wife of Bill Allen who died in 1985.  She was also preceded in death by a brother:  R.V. Freeman and a sister:  Wilma Mathis.  Peggy was a retired employee of Hickory Springs.  She was a member of Piney Hill Free Will Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are her husband:  Lyda Bryant; a daughter:  Caroline Silver and husband, Randy, and a son:  Duane Allen and wife, Cindy; granddaughters;  Natasha Allen and Nateara Allen all of Burnsville; a sister:  Charlene Wilson of Burnsville; brother:  Bob Freeman of Bakersville; a half-brother:  Hal Young of Green Mountain and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. J. B. Cope will officiate.  Burial will be in the Clendell Allen Cemetery at Pensacola.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

JEWELL PRESNELL HYATT

Jewell Presnell Hyatt, 93, of Newdale, passed away Sunday, December 30, 2012.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late John Nelson and Agnes Young Presnell, and the wife of the late Bill Young and Ralph Hyatt.  She was also preceded in death by a son:  Larry Dean Young; and, brothers and sisters:  Lena Pearl Wilson, Ruby Thomas, Jennie McCurry, and Thad, Leonard and Clarence Presnell.

 

Surviving are a step daughter:  Natalie Hyatt Juame and husband, Danny, of Florida; and, 2 granddaughters:  Alyssa and Kristen.  Several nieces and nephews also survive, including special nephew:  Chuck Randolph.  Surviving are her extended church family and friends at Young’s Mountain Music, whom she dearly loved and lived life to the fullest.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Thursday in Newdale Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member.  Brian and Judy Weger will officiate.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

RAY CARROLL BUCHANAN

Ray Carroll “Gabby” Buchanan, 71, of Eller Cove in Weaverville went to be with the Lord, Friday December 28, 2012 at his home.  A native of Yancey County he was a son of the late Wates Ray and Pantha Ogle Buchanan.  He was also preceded in death by step father:  Alvie Ledford; brother: Jack Ledford; and a grandson: Jason Andrew Shetley.  Ray was a retired employee of the N.C. Department of Transportation.

 

Surviving are his wife of 48 years Edith Hensley Buchanan; a son: Ray Buchanan and wife Sandra; a daughter: Angela McKinney; brothers:  Bruce Ledford, and John Ledford; sisters:  Pauline Chandler, Nellie Chandler, and Elizabeth Elaine Laws; grandsons: Carroll Dean Buchanan, Steven McKinney, Brandon Shetley, Dillon Roberts, John Shepherd, and Kevin Shepherd; granddaughter: Alicia Nicole Buchanan; a great granddaughter: Haley Elizabeth Buchanan; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Revs. Cotton Banks, Anson Johnson and Truman Burrell will officiate.  Graveside services will be held at 11AM Tuesday in the Harold Chandler Family Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 PM Monday prior to the service at the Funeral Home.

 

Memorials may be made to the family to assist with funeral expenses.
