EDNA W. CANNON

Edna W. Cannon, 83, of Newdale, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 29, 2012, at Mission Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late George and Hattie Adkins Woody.  She was the wife of Fred Cannon who passed away in 1976.  Edna was also preceded in death by a grandson:  Keith Briggs.  She was a member of Big Creek Free Will Baptist Church and attended Bowditch Union Church.

 

Surviving are 2 daughters:  Judy Fox and husband, Garry, of Big Creek, and Janice Briggs and husband, Kenneth, of ewdale; 3 grandchildren:  Gina Grindstaff and husband, Donald, Mike Fox and special friend, Katrina Ledford, and Stephen Briggs and wife, Whitney; 4 great grandchildren:  Whitney, Alex, Gabe, and Chloe.  Several nieces and nephews also survive, and her lifelong friend:  Atlas Bryant.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Ronnie Whitson and Marvin Hensley will officiate.  A graveside service will be held in the Hughes Cemetery at Big Creek at 11AM on Monday.

 

The family will receive friends 2 hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

RUTH THOMAS

Ruth W. Thomas, 82, of the Double Island Community went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at Mission Hospital in Asheville.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Ed and Grace Sparks Woody and the wife of Frank A. Thomas who died in 1985.  She was also preceded in death by a son, Johnny Thomas; an infant daughter:  Christina; sisters:  Jenny Thomas and Annie McFalls and brothers:  Virgil and Tude Woody.  Ruth was a beloved mother, grandmother, school bus driver and cafeteria employee at Micaville Elementary School for over 30 years.

 

Surviving are two sons:  Mark E. Thomas and wife, Rhonda, and Keith Thomas and wife, Melissa, all of Green Mountain; 2 granddaughters:  Ryan Thomas Broeker and husband, Levi, of Reidsville, NC and Rylie Thomas Scott and husband, Cody, of Unicoi, TN; a great grandson:  Boone Thomas Broeker; 3 sisters:  Ellen Cleland of Sylvania, GA, Mary Sue Cooke of Westmoreland, TN and Carolyn Shelby Baker of Orlando, FL; a brother:  Doc Woody of Spruce Pine and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8 PM Friday in Double Island Baptist Church of which she was a member.  Pastor Ricky Woody will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Saturday in the Double Island Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Friday prior to the service at the church.

KENNETH ALDEN PRICE

Kenneth Alden Price, 86, of Burnsville, passed away Sunday, September 23, 2012, in Mission Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Shelby and Ola Wright Price.  He was preceded in death by his brothers:  Paul and Ward Price; a sister-in-law:  Lela Price; and, a nephew:  Ricky Price.  Kenneth was a US Army Korean Conflict Veteran.  He was a Ford mechanic with Banks & Young and retired from Matthews Ford in Asheville after 30 years of service.  Kenneth attended Windom United Methodist Church.

 

Surviving are his wife of 60 years:  Hettie Higgins Price; and a daughter:  Tamara Marie Price Wagner of Marion.  Several cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 4PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Tommy Robertson and Don Sneller will officiate.  Burial will be in the Honeycutt-Price Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 2 until 4PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

GLADYS M. KNIGHT

Gladys M. Knight, 86, of Burnsville and Apopka, Florida went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, September 23, 2012.  A native of Washington County, Tennessee, she was a daughter of the late, Gertrude Holland Wells.  She was a retired employee of Lockheed Martin.

 

Surviving are her husband of 60 years:  Coot “Kenny” Knight; a daughter:  Elzora Williams Bye and husband, David, of Burnsville; a son:  Jerry Williams and wife, Anna, of Summerville, FL; 5 grandchildren:  Donna Barker, Jeff DuBose, Mark Williams, Lisa Williams and Steve Williams; 5 great grandchildren:  David Barker, Brianna Williams, Maegan Williams, Madison Williams and Kiley Phillips; and 2 aunts:  Ruby Cogdill and Azalea Shelton.

 

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday in West Burnsville Baptist Church.  Revs. Charlie Carroway and Harvey Sharpe will officiate.  Her body will be returned to Orlando, FL for burial in Chapel Hill Memorial Park.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

CHARLES NEILL ELLIS

Charles Neill Ellis, 66, of Burnsville passed away unexpectedly, Wednesday, September 19, 2012.  A native of Catawba County, he was a son of the late C. O. and Laura Walker Ellis.  He attended Randolph Macon Military Academy, was a graduate of Carolina Military Academy and Clemson University and was a U. S. Army Veteran.  Neill was owner/operator of Burnsville Hosiery Mill and a Director of First Citizens Bank.

 

Surviving are his wife of 34 years:  Sue Ogle Ellis; sisters:  Barbara Paterson and husband, Henry, of Hickory and Norma Astin and husband, Bill; a stepdaughter:  Sherry Banner and a stepbrother:  Steve Bailey all of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Tommy Robertson and Keith Blankenship will officiate.  Burial will be in the Eddie McMahan Cemetery at Low Gap.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

JANINE PEELER

Janine Peeler, 43, of Burnsville passed away Sunday, September 16, 2012 at St. Joseph Campus of Mission Hospitals.  A native of Miami, Florida, she was an employee of Mako Marine International for 17 years as a Material Manager and moved to North Carolina in 2003.  Janine was the most loving and caring person  you would ever meet and will be greatly missed and never forgotten.

 

Surviving are her fiancé:  Erik Gorman of Burnsville, parents:  Robert and Sharon Peeler of Burnsville; sister:  Dawn Zulick and husband, Steve of Cranford, NJ; brother:  Lance Peeler and wife, Laura, of Clarksville, TN; paternal grandmother:  Elisabeth Benson of Miami/Burnsville and extended family and friends.

 

No services are planned at this time.

ALBERT LAWS

Albert Laws, 89, formerly of Burnsville passed away Friday, September 14, 2012, at the home of his daughter in Spruce Pine.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Watt and Ella Jay Ray Laws, and the husband of Marie Laws who died in 2005.  Albert was also preceded in death by 2 sisters and 4 brothers.

 

Surviving are 4 daughters:  Verda Smith of Jonesborough, TN, Carrie Bennett and Ruby Laws of Spruce Pine and Mary Cook of Burnsville; 2 sons:  Benny Laws of Elizabethton, TN and David Laws of Jonesborough; 5 grandchildren; 2 great grandsons; a great granddaughter; 2 sisters:  Mary Ledford and Geneva Honeycutt of Burnsville and 2 brothers:  Zeph Laws of Burnsville and Raymond Laws of Johnson City, TN.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3 PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Ken Jenkins will officiate. Burial will be in the Beaver Cemetery on Saw Mill Hollow Road.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to Hospice of Mitchell County, Spruce Pine Hospital Staff and Dr. Cassanego.

MARK STEVEN ROBINSON

Mark Steven Robinson, 44, of Burnsville, passed away Thursday, September 13, 2012, at Johnson City Medical Center.  He was the son of Rabon and Julia Presnell Robinson.  Mark, along with his brother, were the owners and operators of Pine Hill Auto Parts.

 

Surviving are his father:  Rabon Robinson of Burnsville; his mother:  Julia Blevins and husband, Jim, of Burnsville; brother:  Anthony Robinson and wife, Lisa, of Burnsville; 3 nieces:  Melissa, Molly and Melanie; and, his special friend:  Donna Roche.

 

A memorial service will be held at 6PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Charlie Carroway will officiate.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

Memorial donations may be made to one’s favorite charity.

EDITH WOODBY

Edith Woodby, 79, of Byrd Branch passed away Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Emma Bryant.  She was also preceded in death by a sister, Nider Mitchell and a brother, Willie Bryant.  She was a member of WM Borings Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are her husband:  George Woodby; 2 daughters:  Wanda Woodby of Green Mountain and Elizabeth Caudill and husband, Allen, of Burnsville; 2 sons:  Fred Woodby and wife, Donna, and Ted Woodby and wife, Kathy, all of Burnsville; 8 grandchildren:  Jennifer Kerley, Denise Baker, Deirdre Caudill, Phillip Caudill, Jeffrey Adam Caudill, Abbie Davis, Amber Woodby and Andrew George Woodby; 4 great grandchildren:  Alex, Emily, Jordan and Gabriel.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Dale Laws will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Saturday in the Woodby Family Cemetery on Byrd Branch. 

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 PM Friday prior to the service at the funeral home.

ASHLEY AMANDA RIDDLE

Ashley Amanda Riddle, 24, of Burnsville passed away Thursday, September 6, 2012. She was a daughter of Rick Riddle and Linda Lumpkin of Burnsville.  Amanda was an employee of Burnsville Pizza Hut.

 

Surviving in addition to her parents are her son Silas Floyd; a sister; Angela Thomas; a brother; Andy Riddle and paternal grandparents James and Mae Riddle all of Burnsville; maternal grandparents; Everett and Judy Randall of Marion; two nephews and several aunts and uncles.

 

A memorial service will be held at 7 P. M. Friday, September 14, 2012 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Shane Cassida will officiate.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
