CHRIS WHITSON

Chris Whitson, 41, of Burnsville, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, May 29, 2012.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of Jean Cooper Campbell of Burnsville and Don Whitson of Virginia.  He was a US Air Force Veteran, having served in Desert Storm.

 

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife:  Gretchen England Whitson; a daughter:  Bailey Whitson; sons:  Christian and Jordan Whitson; step-father:  Roger Campbell; and brother:  Jeff Whitson and wife, Lisa, all of Burnsville; a sister:  Courtney Cook, and a brother:  Ryan Whitson, both of Virginia; maternal grandmother:  Martha Cooper; and, a great aunt:  Dorothy Wheeler, both of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Saturday in the Cane River Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Friday prior to the service at the funeral home.

SAVANAH BRIGGS

Savanah Briggs, 83, of Green Mountain went home to be with the Lord Friday, May 25, 2012 at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Preston Beaver and Esther Briggs Ayers and the wife of David Less Briggs who died in 2002.  She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Anthony Ayers and a brother:  John Reece Beaver.  Savanah was a member of Bible Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are 2 daughters:  Helen Ayers of Green Mountain and Evelyn Wallace and husband, Pat, of Burnsville; 4 sons:  Charles Lee Briggs of the home, Keith Briggs and wife, Theresa, of Green Mountain, Wade Briggs and wife, Cyrena, of Burnsville and J. C. Briggs and wife, Trixie, of Green Mountain; a brother:  Rev. James Beaver of Burnsville; 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers funeral Home.  Revs. Nathaniel Ayers and Blaine Whitson will officiate.  Burial will be in the Briggs Family Cemetery on Saw Mill Hollow Road.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

HAROLD W. JAMERSON

Harold W. Jamerson, 82, of Bakers Creek went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at Johnson City Medical Center.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Roy and Minnie Belle Silvers Jamerson.  He was the husband of Julie Miller Jamerson who died in 1978.  He was also preceded in death by brothers:  Ralph and Charles Jamerson; sister:  Irene Hensley; and, a granddaughter:  Christina Jamerson who died in 1998.  Harold was a retired farmer, and a member and former deacon of Upper Pigeon Roost Free Will Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are a son:  Terry Jamerson and wife, Sarah, of Bakersville; and, several nieces also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Sherrill Whitson and Dale Buchanan will officiate.  A  graveside service will be held at 1 PM Saturday in the Bennett Cemetery at Upper Pigeon Roost.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Friday prior to the service at the funeral home.

JAMES BUCKNER

James “Red” Buckner, 84, of Bald Creek, passed away Monday, May 21, 2012, at Charles A. George VA Medical Center in Asheville.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Clyde and Pansy Hamlin Buckner.  He was also preceded in death by sisters:  Rose Drake, Lena King, Edna Ingle and Ruth Pate; and, brothers:  Horace and Ernest Buckner.  James was a retired US Army Veteran.

 

Surviving are 2 sons:  Michael Buckner and wife, Wyndy, of Chattanooga, TN and Paul Buckner of Grand Rapids, MI; a sister:  Lucille Chandler of Burnsville; 9 grandchildren; and, 8 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Denver Styles and Jerry Shelton will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 10AM Saturday in Cane River Baptist Church Cemetery, with military graverites conducted by Sgt. E. L. Randolph Chapter 57, DAV.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Friday prior to the service at the funeral home.

TERRY VANBURAN KIRKLAND

Terry Vanburan Kirkland, 55, of the South Toe Community, passed away Sunday, May 20, 2012 at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital.  A native of Clearwater, Florida, he was a son of Othelia Tew Kirkland and the late John Kirkland.  He was also preceded in death by a brother, John Kirkland.

 

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his loving wife, June Colson Kirkland; a daughter:  Joy Baker of the home; 3 sons:  Jeremy Kirkland and wife, Cindy, of Seminole, FL, Raymond Kirkland and wife, Robin, of Marion, NC, Michael Kirkland and wife, Lori, of Land O’Lakes, FL; 8 grandchildren:  Terry, Maegan, Julia, Carolyn, Grace, Trinity, Dakota and Madelyn; 3 sisters:  Peggy Logue and husband, Brad, Jean Pellerin and Wanda Baker and several nieces and nephews.

RUBY GRACE HOUCHARD

Ruby Grace Houchard, infant daughter of Khristian and Holly Ball Houchard went to be with the Lord Saturday, May 12, 2012.

 

Surviving, in addition to her parents, are sisters:  Reagan and Sammy Houchard of the home; maternal grandparents, Sam and Kay Ball; and paternal grandparents, Nick and Marcia Houchard all of Burnsville; aunts, Amanda Ball Reagan and husband, Todd, and Kedren Cooper and husband, Shannon; uncles, Nathan Ball, and Morgen Houchard and wife, Tamara; special extended family, Rebecca Fox, Shane Cassida and Chris Sutherland; and, seven cousins who loved her very much.

YVONNE PARKER HUNTER

Yvonne Parker Hunter, 49, of Burnsville went home to be with the Lord, Friday, May 11, 2012 at John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center in Asheville.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Dolphus and Mary Young Parker.  She was also preceded in death by a sister Juanita Parker Young.  Yvonne attended Appalachian State  and graduated from Mayland Community College with a degree in Medical Office Technology and was an employee of Mayland Community College.

 

Surviving are her husband, Alan Hunter; a son; Adrian Hunter serving with the USMC stationed in California; a niece Machelle Parker of Black Mountain; sisters: Nelly Inabinett of Black Mountain, Pam Parker of Asheville and Carol Charles of Durham; brothers: Randy Parker; Ossie Parker and wife Gail of Burnsville; Jeff Parker and wife Cindy of Old Fort, Tim Parker; Dan Parker and wife Paula of Marion and Van Parker and wife Susan of Burke County, father-in-law and mother-in-law Clarence and Emma Jean Hunter of Hampton, VA.; extended Hunter family, and, a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 P. M. Tuesday in Griffith Chapel Church. of which she was a member and member of the Choir.  The Revs. James Staley and Richard Blanton will officiate.  Burial will be in the Hunter Cemetery on Coxes Creek.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 P. M. Monday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.

DIANTHA WEBSTER STEVENSON

Diantha Webster Stevenson passed away Thursday, May 10, 2012 at her home in Green Mountain. She was born September 8, 1940 in Norwalk, Connecticut.

 

Diantha graduated from The Stockbridge School, Stockbridge Massachusetts in 1957 and received a BA from Bard College in 1963.

 

After growing up in Connecticut, she lived for many years in Washington, DC, where her employers included the Social Science Research Council, the National Science Foundation and Resources for the Future. Family responsibilities took her next to Lee, Massachusetts.  Music was always important to her. She sang in the Cathedral Choir in Washington, DC, the Berkshire Lyric Chorus in Massachusetts and in several church choirs. After moving to Green Mountain in 1991, she became active with the Literacy Council and with St. Thomas Episcopal Church.  

 

She is survived by her sister, Mary Stevenson Thieme of Panama City, Florida and her nephew Donald M. Thieme of Valdosta, Georgia.

 

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 P. M. Friday, May 18th in St. Thomas Episcopal Church.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Habitat for Humanity or a charity of your choice.

BERTHA SILVERS HARWOOD

Bertha Silvers Harwood, 64, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Avery and Liddia King Silvers.  She was preceded in death by a brother:  Nealy Silvers; and, a sister:  Ruth Herron.  Bertha was a former employee of Ohio Electric and Shenna’s Restaurant in Barnardsville, and was retired from OTS, Inc. in Weaverville.

 

Surviving are 2 sons:  Mark McMahan of Burnsville and Jason Harwood and wife, Malena, of Barnardsville; 4 grandsons:  Avery, Cameron, John and Jason; 2 brothers:  Lloyd Silvers of Burnsville and Junior King of Leicester; 5 sisters:  Lola Radford and Helen Robinson of Burnsville, June Laws of Asheville, Shirley Dockery of Fletcher and Ruby Harbor of Eden; and, several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. David Garland and Tommy Murphy will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 2PM Sunday in the King Cemetery at Elk Shoal.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

LOUISE McINTOSH ENGLAND

Louise McIntosh England, 90, of Indian Creek Road, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, April 30, 2012 at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Willard and Fannie Anderson McIntosh.  She was also preceded in death by brothers:  Cliff Horton and Jack A. McIntosh and a sister, Hortense King.

 

Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Armin O. England; a daughter, Diana England; and a son,  Mark England all of Burnsville and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Philip Garland will officiate.  Burial will be in the Willard McIntosh Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
