CHRISTINE THOMAS

Christine Thomas, 58, of Cane Branch went to be with the Lord, Sunday, March 4, 2012 at Mission Hospitals St. Joseph Campus.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Juanita Winfield Brockey.  She was a loving wife and mother.

 

Surviving is her husband of 40 years:  Gary Dennis Thomas; a daughter:  Jennifer Thomas of Houston, Texas and a son:  Craig Thomas of the home; 2 brothers:  Jeffrey Brockey and Gerald Brockey of Cumberland, MD.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Dale Banks will officiate.  Burial will be in the Crabtree Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 12 Noon until 2 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

ELAINE McINTOSH

Elaine McIntosh, 71, of Pensacola went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, March 1, 2012 at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of Clara Atkins Penland of Pensacola and the late Bill Penland.  Elaine was a faithful member of Laurel Branch Baptist Church, serving in the children’s ministry, seeking God’s will for herself and the children she served.

 

Surviving in addition to her mother is her husband of 36 years:  Claude McIntosh; a daughter:  Teena Fox and husband, Jeff, of Nebo, a son:  Ronnie McIntosh and wife, Lisa, of Burnsville; 5 grandchildren:  Brandi Gilliland and husband, Kyle, of Asheville, Cody Fox and wife, Darsey, of Waynesville, Ashley Geouge and husband, Mark, of Burnsville, Jayme Maier and husband, Cole, of Burnsville, Kyle McIntosh and wife, Katrina, of Burnsville; 2 great grandchildren:  Hunter Geouge and Collin Gilliland, a sister: Barbara Peek and husband, Grady, a brother:  Dean Penland and wife, Mozelle, all of Burnsville, several nieces and nephews and her loving dog:  Abby Gail.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Saturday in the Laurel Branch Baptist Church.  Pastor Ray Strickland will officiate.  Burial will be in the Allen Cemetery on Cattail Creek.

 

The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2 PM prior to the service at the church.

LORAIN GORTNEY

Lorain Gortney, 78, of Phipps Creek Road went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at St. Joseph Campus of Mission Hospitals.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Cling and Estelle Letterman Hughes and the wife of Calvin Gortney who died in 2001.  She was also preceded in death by a son: Rickey Gortney, who died in 2005, and a brother:  Fate Hughes.

 

Surviving are her son:  Maurice C. Gortney and wife, Karen, of Asheville; step grandchildren:  Nichole Wells of Weaverville and Josh Wells of Atlanta, GA; 3 sisters:  Louise Webb of Hickory, Mary Evelyn Thomas and husband, Billy, and Emily Wilson and husband, Ronnie, all of Concord.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Billy Thomas, Phillip Parker and David Ingram will officiate.  Burial will be in the Academy Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

JESSIE SHEPHERD

Jessie Shepherd, 97, of Burnsville went home to be with the Lord, Monday, February, 27, 2012 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late J. C. and Amanda Chandler Ingle and the wife of Venus Shepherd who died in 1992.  She was also preceded in death by brothers:  Robert and Rufus Ingle.  Jessie lived in Sandston, Virginia for 52 years before returning to Yancey County in 2002.

 

Surviving are her sisters:  Estelle Edwards and Lydia Hensley of Burnsville and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8:00 PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Jerry Shelton and Steven Glover will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday in the Chandler Cemetery at Ivy Gap.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 PM Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home.

LILLIAN ROBERTSON MOORE

Lillian Robertson Moore, 82, of the Hardscrabble Community, passed away Saturday, February 25, 2012 at Mission Hospitals Memorial Campus.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Earl A. and Maude Young Robertson.   She was also preceded in death by a sister; Dorthea Trotta, and brothers: R. V. and Wade Robertson.  Lillian was a former employee of Glen Raven Mills.

 

 Surviving are her husband:  Coy D. Moore; a brother:  David Robertson of Florida and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Royce Ball will officiate.  Burial will be in the Proffitt Cemetery on Proffitt Branch.

 

 The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. 

ANNICE MANEY

Annice Maney, 105, of the Horton Creek Community passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late John Wesley and Estelle Horton Maney.  She was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Alice Maney and brothers:  Jack and Lee Maney.  She graduated from Lees McRae School in Banner Elk and attended Columbia Bible College. She worked several years for the Social Security Administration in Baltimore, MD.  Annice was proud of her ancestry and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.  She was a member of Paint Gap Presbyterian Church.

 

Surviving are 3 sisters:  Grace Spires of Asheville, Mafra Robinson of Burnsville and Margaret Clarke of Rialto, California, and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Don Blankenship and Joe Bennett will officiate.  Burial will be in the Horton Cemetery on Horton Creek.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

MACK CARROLL

 Mack Carroll, beloved husband of nearly 49 years to wife, Shirley Jean Black Carroll, ceased from his labors and entered into the joys of his Lord, Saturday, February 18, 2012, at the campus of Mission Hospital. He was 67 years old and a resident of Marion since 1965. Mack was a native of Yancey County, the son of the late Crawford and Hettie H. Carroll. He was also preceded in death by three brothers:Junior, Roy and Wayne; a sister: Maude; a granddaughter: Ashley and two special brother-in laws: Landon Boone and Jay Black.

 

He worked in the private sector from the age of 16 until his retirement in 2005. He faithfully attended Faith Mission Baptist Church, Marion, NC.

 

Mack is also survived by his three children: Johnny Mack and wife, Sherry, of Boiling Springs, SC; Tina Carroll Cable and Gregory Keith, both of Marion; four beloved grandchildren: Victoria, Kayla, Daniel and Morgan; and 11 siblings: Evelyn Boone, Charles, J.C., Ray, Faye Hudarow, James, Hoyle, Lois Belcher, Mildred Letterman, Jane Bollinger and Phillip.

 

A funeral service will be held Monday, February 20, 2012, at 3:00 pm in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeal home.  Pastor  Jim Ledford , Pastor Pete McComb and Gregory K. Carroll will officiate. Burial will be in the Pete Young Cemetery

DAVID SELTZER

David Anderson Seltzer, 62, of Burnsville, passed away  Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at the Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine. A native of Hartford, CT, he was a son of the late David and Dorothy Johnson Seltzer. He was also preceded in death by his sister Shelby.  David was an entrepreneur and was noted for his humor and his advice.

 

He is survived by his wife Ila Seltzer; a daughter: Heather Judge of Asheville; a Step-daughter: Molly Kamper of Austin, Tx; sisters: Cynthia Gorry and family of Lexington,Ma; Solveig Gruber and family of Romney, WV;  Dika Seltzer and family of Baltimore, Md, and a brother: Clifford Seltzer and family of Charlottesville, Va.

A memorial service will be held at 2 PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  A celebration of life will follow at the Burnsville Town Center. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.  Memorial donations may be made to the Seltzer memorial Trust, c/o Heather Judge.

DONALD LEE (DON B.) BUCHANAN

Donald Lee (Don B.) Buchanan, 72, of Jacks Creek passed away Monday, February 13, 2012, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late T. A. and Margaret Young Buchanan.  He was a US Army Veteran.  Don was a motorcycle mechanic formerly with Gene Lummus' Harley-Davidson in Swannanoa.

 

Surviving are a brother:  Tommy Buchanan and wife, Peggy; and a nephew:  Tim Buchanan all of Burnsville and several cousins.

 

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Rev. Ricky Bennett will officiate.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

JACK HUGHES

Jack Hughes, 82, of Miramar Drive, Asheville, passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at his home.  A native of Mitchell County, he was a son of the late Goodson and Tessie Thomas Hughes and the husband of Esther Byrd Hughes, who died in 2003.  Jack was a US Marine Veteran serving in the Korean and Vietnam wars.

 

Surviving are a daughter:  Tammy Wyatt of the home; 4 sons:  Danny Hughes of Clyde, Dean Hughes of Johnson City, TN, Randy Hughes of Fairview and Kriss Hughes of Cary, NC; 2 sisters:  Bonnie Johnson and Marie Presnell of Green Mountain; 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brother.  Rev. Philip Garland will officiate.  Military graverites will be conducted in the McCurry Cemetery on Barn Road.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
