CARL YOUNG
Carl Young, 87, died Sunday, November 27, 2011 at his home on Shoal Creek. He was born on April 8, 1924 on a farm at Shoal Creek in the mountains of Yancey County, North Carolina, where his father, Will Young, was a farmer and his mother, Laura Belle Hyatt Young, was a homemaker. The youngest of twelve Young children, Carl spent his childhood playing on the family farm. At age 20, he enlisted in the Army where he fought during World War II with the 12th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Infantry Division in the European Theatre. Carl was a recipient of a Purple Heart after being wounded in Rothenburg, Germany. Upon his return to Yancey County, he married Lillian Buchanan Young and they had two daughters, Laura Gwen and Sharon Lee. Carl was a mica miner, store owner, long-distance truck driver, heavy equipment operator, tire recapper, Pet Milk truck driver, and a builder of many roads throughout the area. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, NASCAR racing, playing poker and watching sports. His life was filled with family and friends, who laughed often with him.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents Will and Laura Belle Hyatt Young; sisters: Elizabeth Huskins, Sarah Allen, Mabel Letterman, Grace Wright, Belle Griffith and Mamie Young; brothers: Terrill, Jim, Grady, Jess and Horace Young; and former wife: Lillian Buchanan Young. He is survived by his partner and best friend, Kaye Greene; two children: Laura Gwen Young Stetzler and husband, Ray, of Beavercreek, Ohio and Sharon Lee Young Scott of South Boston, Virginia; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A graveside service will be held in the Pete Young Cemetery at 10 AM Wednesday with military graverites conducted by Sgt. E. L. Randolph Chapter 57, DAV.
A memorial service will be held at 12 Noon Wednesday, November 30, 2011 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends from 11 AM until Noon at the funeral home prior to the service.

IVAN McCURRY
Ivan McCurry, 86, of the Mine Fork Community, passed away Saturday, November 26, 2011 at his home. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Mal and Belle Edwards McCurry and the husband of Florence Laws McCurry who died in 1995. He was also preceded in death by an infant son: Lyda McCurry; a sister: Fern Tipton and brothers: Carl, Glenn, Grant, Paul, Sam and Geroge McCurry. Ivan was a World War II Army veteran.
Surviving are his daughter: Violet McCurry of Burnsville and several nieces and nephews.
Burial was in the Mal McCurry Family Cemetery.
In honoring his request, no services are planned.
GLADYS M. BUCKNER
Gladys M. Buckner, 83, of Pleasant Valley Road, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 22, 2011, at her home. She was the daughter of the late Horace and Pearl Waldrop Buckner, and the wife of William Riley Buckner who passed away in September 2009. Gladys was also preceded in death by her son: Steven Buckner; grandson: Billy Buckner; sisters: Betty Buckner and Louise Radcliff; and, brother: Gene Buckner.
Surviving are her son: William S. Buckner and wife, Delane; daughters: Joan Souther and husband, Steven, Janet Deitz and husband, Doug, and Vickie Thomas, all of Burnsville; brothers: David Buckner of Leicester, James A. Buckner of Nesbitt, MS and Benny Buckner of Oteen; 10 grandchildren: Alicia, Melissa, Angela, Devan, Jackie, Jessie, Heather, Justin, Jewel and Dakota; and, 8 great grandchildren: Jordan, Julia, Hallie, Jasmine, Nic, Anna Grace, Payton and Trysten.
Funeral services will be held at 2PM Saturday in Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, of which she was a member. Brothers Davy Shelton and Bradley Boone will officiate. Burial will be in the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Madison County.
The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
RACHEL LYNNETTE McKINNEY
Rachel Lynnette McKinney, 42, of the Bowditch Community, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, November 21, 2011 at her home. A native of Yancey County, she was the daughter of Linda Burleson McKinney of Burnsville. She was preceded in death by her grandparents: Edd and Addie ‘Bill’ Hall Burleson and an uncle, Tommy Burleson. Lynnette was a former employee of Taylor Togs and a member of Bowditch Union Church.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her aunts: Mary Lou Wilson of Burnsville, Meritta Good of Mars Hill and Libby Burleson of Marion; and cousins: Edwin Burleson, Tony Good, Kristyl Mace, and Nicholas and Krisha Burleson.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. The Revs. Ronnie Whitson and Jim Shoupe will officiate. Burial will be in the Casie Thomas Family Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
PHILMORE HUGHES
Philmore Hughes, 88, of Micaville, met his Lord Sunday, November 20, 2011, at Brookside Rehabilitation & Care. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Roscoe and Lillie Buchanan Hughes. He was preceded in death by 4 sisters: Maude Fox, Myrtle Gouge, Gertha Wyatt and Ruth Robinson. Philmore was a retired truck driver.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years: Thurma Hughes; 2 daughters: Linda H. Russell and husband, Mike, of Asheville and Sabra H. Tipton and husband, Horace, of Mill Springs; 2 granddaughters: Ashley Russell and husband, Shannon, and Kishia Wise and husband, Bobby; a great granddaughter: Madison Wise; and, a special friend and caregiver: Tommy Dale.
Funeral services will be held at 2PM Wednesday in Morning Star Baptist Church, of which he was a charter member, former deacon and member of the Morning Star Quartet and Choir. Revs. Billy Mitchell and Burl Grindstaff will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church. At other times, the family will be at Hunter Run Apartments, 15 Kyle lane, Apartment A-3.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff and caregivers at Brookside for the loving care given to Philmore during his stay.
LYDA WOODBY HIGGINS
Lyda Woodby Higgins, 89, of Burnsville, went home to be with her Heavenly Father Saturday, November 19, 2011, at Mission Hospitals Memorial Campus. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late James and Alice King Woodby, and the wife of the late Horace Higgins who died in 2000.
Surviving are 2 sons: Horace Higgins, Jr. and wife, Eleanor, of Burnsville and Kenneth Higgins and wife, Yvonne, of Midland, NC; 4 grandchildren: Denise Dunn, Kevin and Kenny Higgins and Diane Reaves; 5 great grandchildren: Alexis and Jordan Dunn, Carson Higgins, Toni Hildebrand and Kelly Venters; sisters: Maude Woodby Bradford and Mary Kampf; brothers: Jim, Bill, Claude and George Woodby; and, several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 2PM Tuesday in West Burnsville Baptist Church, of which she was a member. Pastor Charlie Carroway will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 12 until 2PM prior to the service at the church.

ROSA WILSON McPETERS
Rosa Wilson McPeters, 90, of Horton Creek, passed away Saturday, November 19, 2011, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Nelson and Lula Chrisawn Wilson, and wife of Arthur McPeters who died in 1986. Rosa was also preceded in death by an infant son: Clifford Arthur McPeters; and, 10 brothers and sisters. She attended Paint Gap Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are her children: Doris Honeycutt and husband, Richard, James Earl McPeters and wife, Naomi, and Louise Ramsey all of Burnsville; 6 grandchildren: Pat Fox and husband, Zeb, Jeff Hilemon and fiancee, Kim, Kenny Ramsey and wife, Anna, Richard Ramsey, Cathy Laws and husband, Randy, and Jacquie Hollifield and husband, Randy; 11 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; and, a brother: James W. Wilson of the home.
Funeral services will be held at 8 P. M. Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. The Revs. Haskie Honeycutt, Jr, Seth Metcalf and Scot Garland will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 11 A. M. Wednesday in the Westall Cemetery at Hamrick.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 P. M. Tuesday prior to the service at the funeral home and at other times will be at her home.
DOLLY COLE PAYNE
Dolly Cole Payne, 79, of Puncheon Fork, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, November 19, 2011, in Blue Ridge Regional Hospital. A native of Madison County, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Earl and Lona Fender Cole.
Surviving are her husband: Eddie Payne; 3 daughters: Zetta Rosemary Dobson and Betty Loretta Reavis of Burnsville and Scarlet Marie Clark of Alexander; 2 grandchildren: Maria Reavis and Michael Clark; 2 great grandchildren: Spencer and Elise Buckner; and, a brother: Alvin Cole of Asheville.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Tim Denton will officiate. Burial will be at 2PM Tuesday in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hendersonville.
The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
MELVIN RICHARD FOX JR
Melvin Richard Fox Jr., 52, of Micaville, passed away Thursday, November 17, 2011, at his home. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of Bernice Williams Fox and the late Melvin Fox. He was preceded also preceded in death by 2 brothers: Jimmy Dean Fox and Gary Lee Fox.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are sisters: Vicky Moore and husband, Michael, of Micaville, Linda Hensley and husband, “Cat”, of Burnsville; a brother: Jerry Fox of Micaville; and, several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. David Garland will officiate. Burial will be in the Sol Fox Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
GENEVIVE ALLEN
Genevive Allen, 91, of Winterstar Loop, passed away Friday, November 18, 2011, in Brookside Rehabilitation and Care. A native of France, she was the wife of Lt. Col. Jack Allen who died in 1987. She had been a resident of Mount Mitchell Lands since 1975. She was an active member of the Mt. Mitchell Ladies Golf Association, having won the Golf Championship in the years 1984, 1985, 1986. Genevive was a supporter of the Humane Society and an advocate of Animal Rights and enjoyed Gardening.
She is survived by many friends, including caregivers: Harlon Parker and Betty Jones of Burnsville; and, her dog: Mitch.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
