ED EDWARDS

Ed Edwards, 88, of Mine Fork, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Wes and Rebecca Renfro Edwards and the husband of the late Margie Honeycutt Edwards, who passed January 1, 2011.  He was also preceded in death by a  son:  Eddie Edwards; brothers:  Garth and wife, Alice, Clarence and wife, Annie, and Boyd Edwards; sisters:  Cansanda and husband, F. R. Deaton, Ethel and husband, Bis Laws, Maphra and husband, Paul Aldridge and Lola and husband, June Banner. 

 

Surviving are his daughters:  Anita Bryant and husband, Doug, and Regina Melton and husband, Dwayne, of Burnsville; 2 grandsons:  Brandon Bryant and wife, Amanda, of Asheville, and Douglas Melton and wife, Felisha, of Weaverville; a great granddaughter:  Cheyenne Melton; a sister-in-law: Louise Edwards; and special nieces, nephews and neighbors.

 

A joint funeral service will be held at 2 PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Donald Whitson and Denny Wilson will officiate.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

Burial will be in the Honeycutt-Price Cemetery on Georges Fork.

 

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Yancey County, 856 Georges Fork Road, Burnsville, NC   28714. 

MARGIE EDWARDS

Margie Honeycutt Edwards, 81, of Mine Fork, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, January 1, 2011, at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Cecil and Ada Carroll Honeycutt. She was also preceded in death by a son:   Eddie Edwards; and a sister:   Ella Blalock.  She attended Petersons Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are her husband of 63 years:  Ed Edwards; 2 daughters:  Anita Bryant and husband, Doug, and Regina Melton and husband, Dwayne, of Burnsville; 2 grandsons:  Brandon Bryant and wife, Amanda, of Asheville, and Douglas Melton and wife, Felisha, of Weaverville; a great granddaughter:  Cheyenne Melton; a sister:  Clara Cassida and a brother-in- law:  Clyde Blalock and wife, Kate, all of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Donald Whitson and Denny Wilson will officiate.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

 

Burial will be in the Honeycutt-Price Cemetery on Georges Fork.

JACK WHITSON

Jack Whitson, 90, of Jacks Creek, passed away Saturday, January 1, 2011, at The Blue Ridge Regional Hospital.   A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late John and Leona Adkins Whitson.  He was the husband of Esther Whitson who died in 1997.   He was also preceded in death by a sister:  Trula Banks; and, brothers:  Floyd and Shurl Whitson.  Jack was a World War II US Army Veteran and a member of Big Creek Free Will Baptist Church

 

Surviving are two sons:  Darryl Wayne Whitson and wife, Lorraine, of Burnsville and Don Whitson of Virginia; seven grandchildren:  Julie Robinson, Malinda Silver, Daniel Whitson, Jeff Whitson, Chris Whitson, Courtney Cook and Ryan Whitson; 16 great grandchildren; two sisters:  Ruth Whitson of Erwin, TN and Una Randolph of Burnsville; a brother: Brooks Whitson of Erwin, TN; and, special caretaker and sister-in-law:  Fern Whitson of Burnsville.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7 P.M. Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Rev. Marvin Hensley will officiate.

 

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 P.M. Monday at the funeral home.

 

Graveside services will be at 11 A. M. Tuesday in the Hughes Cemetery at Big Creek.

HAROLD LLOYD HENSLEY

Lloyd Hensley, 72, of Harrisonburg, VA passed away Tuesday, December 28, 2010, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Vance and Agnes Hill Hensley.  Lloyd was a US Marine Corps veteran and a retired realtor.

 

Surviving are a sister:  Alice Cole and husband, Doug, of Plantation, FL; 3 brothers:  Parson Hensley and wife, Doris, of Arden, David Hensley of Morgan, UT and Charlie Hensley and wife, Myra, of Burnsville; and, several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Dr. Chris Morgan will officiate.  Burial will be in the Academy Hill Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

NORMA RATHBONE

Norma Rathbone, 79, of the Low Gap Community, passed away Tuesday, December 28, 2010, at Yancey House Assisted Living.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Milburn and Eliza Guinn Harris.

 

Surviving are her husband:  Jake H. Rathbone; 2 sons:  Dennis Keith Rathbone of Asheville and James Alen Rathbone of Swannanoa; 3 grandsons:  Austin, Tyler and Luke Rathbone; a granddaughter:  Sandra Renee Rathbone; 2 sisters:  Betty Crowder of Swannanoa and Lana Wright of Spruce Pine; and, 2 brothers:  Pender Harris and Hershel Harris of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Rev. Blain Whitson will officiate.  Burial will be in the Eddie McMahan Cemetery at Low Gap.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

RICHARD ANTHONY RAICHLE

Richard (Rich) Anthony Raichle, 60, of Skyline Drive, journeyed home to be with his Lord on December 25, 2010.  He was born October 30, 1950 in Philadelphia, PA, to the late Kurt Robert and Marguerite Mary Cannon Raichle, of Pawcatuck, Conn. He was a loving husband, brother and very special uncle.  Rich received his bachelors degree from New England Institute of Technology at the age of 41, where he ranked second in his class.  Rich worked at Harris Graphics where he met his bride, Carolyn Jean Main, and married February 14, 1987.  He and Carolyn moved to Orlando, Florida where Rich worked as a machinist, then later as supervisor of transportation at Orlando Airport.  After vacationing in Burnsville for 11 years, the love of the mountains called them to make Burnsville their new home in 2006.  Rich and Carolyn became the new owners of Ye Olde Country Store, formerly the Amish Store on Cane River School Road.  

 

Rich loved golf, hiking, camping and boating.  Rich’s nieces and nephews wish to remember their uncle for his love, support and special friendship they shared.

 

Survivors include his wife: Carolyn Jean Raichle; a brother: Robert Raichle and wife, Judy; two nieces and a nephew of Norwood MA; a sister:  Marguerite Mary Walsh and husband, William; and two nieces and a nephew of Atlanta, GA; grandnieces and nephews; a brother-in-law:  Allen Main of Ashaway, RI; and, sisters-in-law: Susan Kettley and Terry Main of Ashaway and Shirley McLaren of Asheville.

 

Private memorial services are planned for a later date.

BETTY TOWE

Betty Towe, 81, of the Prices Creek Community went to be with Jesus for Christmas on Friday, December 24, 2010 at the John F. Keever, Jr.  Solace Center in Asheville after a long, courageous battle with cancer.  Born in Buncombe County on April 23, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Carlie and Della McIntosh McCandless and the wife of Quinton Towe who passed away April 4, 1998.  She was also preceded in death by brothers Freddie and Junior McCandless and a granddaughter Kelly Towe who died March 8, 2006.  Betty was a member of Prices Creek Union Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are a daughter: Janie Fender and husband Darrell, a son: Dwight Towe and wife Janie, a granddaughter: Tiffany Redden, three grandsons: Jody Towe, Darren Fender and Nicholas Fender and two very special great grandchildren, who always made her smile: Bryson and Bianca Redden all of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7 P. M. Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Burl Ledford and Brian Tipton will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 11 A. M. Wednesday in the Scott Cemetery on Prices Creek.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

DIXIE BENNETT

Dixie Bennett, 87, of Burnsville, went to be with the Lord, Friday, December 24, 2010.  A native of Barnardsville, she was a daughter of the late Rev. L. A. and Lena Ray Atkins and the wife of Harold Bennett, Sr., who died in 2006.

 

Surviving are two sons:  Pastor Harold Bennett, Jr., and wife, Gail, of Boone and Robert (Bobby) Bennett and wife, Mary, of Eden; two brothers:  Jack Atkins of Burnsville and Don Atkins of Florida; 4 grandchildren:  Todd Bennett of Greenville, SC, Angie Farthing of Boone, Amanda Gard of Mann’s Harbor, NC and Emily Sullivan, PA, of Greensboro and 8 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Monday in Bolens Creek Baptist Church of which she was a member.  Pastor Chris Morgan and Todd Bennett, grandson, will officiate.  Burial will be in the McCracken Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

CLYDE TIPTON

Clyde Tipton, 91, of Weaverville, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, December 21, 2010, at the Brian Center of Weaverville.  A native of Yancey County,  he was a son of the late Frank and Rhett Lewis Tipton.  He was a World War II Army Veteran, serving in the European Theatre.

 

Surviving are his wife of 64 years:  Mary Magdalene Hensley Tipton; a daughter:  Hanne Wainscott; 2 grandsons:  Steffan and Andrew Wainscott, all of Shelbyville, KY; a foster daughter:  Wanda Pate Ledford and husband, Reece, of Hot Springs, VA; 3 foster grandchildren:  Wayland Ledford of Hot Springs, Merle Ledford of Richmond, VA, and Melanie Ledford of Harrisonburg, VA; 2 great grandsons:  Samuel J. Snead, IV and Sidney Maxwell Snead of Harrisonburg; a great granddaughter:  Amelia Magdalene Ledford of Richmond; and, a sister:  Mary Ester Johnson of Asheville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11AM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home in Burnsville.  The Rev. Cline Hensley, Jr. will officiate.  Burial will be in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory in North Asheville.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

Military graverites will be done by Sgt. E. L. Randolph Chapter 57 DAV.

DONNIE EDWARDS

Donnie Edwards, 62, of Champ Ray Road, passed away Monday, December 13, 2010, in Stoney Point.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Clyde and Estelle Phillips Edwards.  Donnie was a US Marine Vietnam Veteran, and an employee of Underwood & Weld Trucking.

 

Surviving are his wife of 32 years:  Jean Edwards; a daughter:  Janie Murphy and husband, Jeff, of Burnsville; 2 stepsons:  Tony Briggs and wife, Jamonica, of Burnsville, and Martin Briggs and wife, Amy, of Taylorsville; 2 sisters:  Faye Tipton and Jean Autrey, both of Burnsville; 5 grandchildren:  Jason Edwards, Nathan, Natalya and Dylan Murphy and Rylan Briggs; special aunt and uncle:  Ruth and Gudger Hensley; very special cousin:  Erelena Hughes; and, very special friends:  Leroy and Shelia King.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Rev. Jerry Shelton will officiate.  Burial will be in the Will Young Cemetery off NC Highway 80 North.

 

The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 2PM Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home. 

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home to assist with funeral expenses.
