WILLIAM WELDON "BILL" RADFORD

William Weldon “Bill” Radford, 61, of Weaverville passed away Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Fred and Mary Edwards Radford.  He was a U.S. Army Veteran.  He was a retired employee of Karpen Steel.  He was also preceded in death by 2 brothers:  Ray Radford and Billy Reece Radford.  William was a loving husband and father.

 

Surviving are his wife of 41 years:  Annie Silvers Radford; a son:  Bruce Radford of Leicester; a daughter:  Michelle Radford of the home; a sister:  Helen Radford of Marion and a brother:  Danny Radford of Burnsville.

 

Military graverites will be conducted by Sgt. E. L. Randolph Chapter 57 DAV at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Piney Hill Cemetery. 

 

The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.   

HELEN G. WHITSON

Helen G. Whitson, 84, of Green Mountain, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Maryland, she was a daughter of the late Harry Gavigan and Margaret Gavigan Perkins and the wife of Rassie Whitson who died in 2005.  Helen and Rassie were owner-operators of Li’l Smoky Drive-In for 22 years.  She was of the Baptist faith.

 

Surviving are a daughter:  Kathy Roman and husband, Buzz, of York, PA; 2 sons:  Bob Whitson and wife, Judy, of Blountville, TN and Grant Whitson of Green Mountain; 5 sisters:  Bertha, Blanche, Janet, Margaret and Brenda; 2 brothers:  Gilmore and Irvin; 6 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren and a special caregiver:  Rita W. Honeycutt.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8:00 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Blaine Whitson and Rodney Deyton will officiate.  Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday in the Peterson Hill Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home.

TROY COLE

Troy Lee Cole, 75, of Burnsville, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Friday, November 5, 2010 at his home.  He was the son of the late James Albert and Effie Kent Cole of Weaverville.  Other family members waiting for him in heaven are: an infant son:  Troy Daniel Cole; 3 brothers:  Johnny, Edd and George Cole; one granddaughter: Amber Brooke Cole.  He retired from Western Waterproofing where he was a foreman for 37 years.  He attended Landmark Baptist Church and rededicated his life to Jesus in September, 2010 in Arizona.  For 5 years, he owned and operated Mars Hill Bulk Food.  Troy was a loving husband, father and grandfather that will be greatly missed.

 

Surviving are his wife of 41 years:  Norma Edwards Cole; 4 sons:  Johnny and wife, Gail, Timmy and wife, Faye, Scotty and wife, Shelly, and Daniel; 3 daughters:  Brenda Young and husband, Doug, Donna Anderson, Merinda Edwards and husband, Victor, all of Burnsville; 2 brothers:  Wayne and wife, Joyce, Gaye and wife, Linda; 2 sisters:  Joe Cox, Faye Hensley and husband, Olen; 17 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday in the Landmark Baptist Church.  The Revs. Denver Styles, Scotty Cole and David Bryant will officiate.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 1 until 3:00 PM at the church.  

WILLIAM C. "BILL" THOMAS

William C. “Bill” Thomas, 72, of Burnsville, passed away on Wednesday, November 3, 2010, at Brookside Rehabilitation & Care after a short illness.  He was born in Chestertown, Maryland to the late Elmer and Loretta Durney Thomas.  Bill served his country in the US Marine Corps.  He had a long career in radio and television.  Bill retired as a real estate broker.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother:  Elmer Thomas, Jr.; and, sisters:  Mariam Gildersleve and Peggy Thomas.

 

He is survived by his wife:  Erma; a daughter:  Lori Winkles; two sons:  William Clayton, Jr. and David Thomas and wife, Julie, all of Spartanburg, SC; two step daughters:  Teresa Brumbaugh and husband, Jay, of Orlando, FL, and Denise Peterson of Burnsville; four grandsons:  Blake, Skylar, Jordan and Cullen; one granddaughter:  Fallen; two step granddaughters:  Melissa McCormack and husband, Robert, and Laura Brumbaugh, both of Orlando, FL; and, four step great grandchildren:  Hope, Ashley, Kate and Ben.

 

The family will receive friends at a gathering in the home at 104 Mountain Crest Drive, Burnsville, NC, from 3:00 until 6:00 P.M. on Saturday, November 6, 2010.

PHILLIP ROBINSON

Phillip Robinson, 57, of Celo, passed away Thursday, October 28, 2010 at the Brian Center in Spruce Pine.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Ransom and Lucille Burgin Robinson.  Phillip retired from Glen Raven Mills after 31 years.  He had a love for guns and was an avid collector.

 

Surviving are his sister:  Dale Autrey of Celo and his uncle and aunt:  Earl and Maxie Burgin of Celo.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Randy Autrey and Charles Carroll will officiate.  Burial will be in the Ballew Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. 

ELEANORA T. WOODY YOUNG

Eleanora T. Woody Young, born July 1st, 1928, passed away Wednesday, October 27, 2010, at 2:30 P.M. at Roan Highlands Nursing Home in Roan Mountain, TN, where she had lived for the last 3 years.  She was the daughter of Jim and Belle McKinney Woody, a graduate of Harris High School, and retired from Feldspar Corporation after 34 years.  Other family members to meet her in Heaven are Floyd and Lela Woody, Nora Woody, Paul and Nell Woody, Frank and Ruth Woody, Walter and Sylvia Woody, Zelma and Mack McKinney, Jan and Mike McKinney, Joe and Evelyn Young.

 

Survivors include her husband of 61 years:  Clyde Young, Jr.; daughter and son-in-law:  Cheryl and Buck Buchanan; grandbabies:  BoBo and Precious; a brother:  Arvil Woody; sisters-in-law:  Kathleen McCollum of Estatoe and Shirley Young of Florida; brother-in-law and sister-in-law:  Rev. Thomas Young and his wife, Zeta; Cheryl’s brother:  Chuck Cabe and wife, Pam; niece:  Jessica; and, stepdaughter:  Susan Hollifield.  Several nieces and nephews also survive:  Jimmy, Gene, Art and Jo Woody, Rhonda Bledsoe, Peggy Walker, Joyce Johnson, Sheila Siffrii, Keith Woody, David and Johnathan Young and Mariam Gillespie, Jeff, Greg and Nicki Panasuk and Joe Moore.  Also surviving are several great nieces, nephew and cousins.

 

The funeral service will be at 2:00 P.M. Saturday at the Newdale Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member.  The Revs. Mike Brazelle and Thomas Young will officiate.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

 

In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate small plants to be given.  These will be taken to the nursing home for her friends and caregivers in memory of her.

 

The family wishes to extend special thanks to the CNA friends of Eleanora at Roan Highlands:  Sue Heaton, Doodie, Angie, Rosella, Blanch, Mary and Sue.

GLADYS BRADLEY GRINDSTAFF

Gladys Bradley Grindstaff, 90, of the Brush Creek community, went home to be with the Lord Monday, October 25, 2010, at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Pierce and Dora Allen Bradley, and the wife of R. K. Grindstaff who died in 2001.  She was also preceded in death by a grandson:  Randall Grindstaff; and, a sister:  Louise Honeycutt.  Gladys loved her church, her family and her friends.

 

Surviving are two daughters:  Ginger Phillips and husband, Jap, of Burnsville, and Brenda Silver and husband, William, of Bakersville; a son:  Ronnie Grindstaff and wife, Norma, of Burnsville; a brother:  Pierce Bradley and wife, Marian, of Asheville; grandchildren:  Bradley Grindstaff, Lisa Owens, Sherri Silvers, Greg Phillips, Mark and John Silver and Jennifer Foxx; great grandchildren:  Ashley and Forrest Garner, Reggie, Rachel, Jamie and Matt Owens, Nick, Xander and Blandon Silvers, Makayla, Annali and Riley Silver, Jackson Foxx and Daniel and Kasey Grindstaff; 3 great, great grandchildren:  Aiden, A. J. and Adam Silvers.

 

Funeral services will be held at 1PM Wednesday in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, of which she was the oldest member.  Rev. Marty Parrott will officiate.  Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Tuesday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, where the body will remain until the funeral hour.  At other times the family will be at her home.

BERTHA LOIS MACE

Bertha Lois Mace, 81, of Burnsville, went to be with the Lord, Friday, October 22, 2010 in Yancey House.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Claude and Pearl Hall Mace.  She was also preceded in death by 2 sisters: Gloria Hensley and Lola Mace.  Lois was a retired employee of Glen Raven Mills.

 

Surviving are a daughter:  Brenda Hall and husband, Larry, of South Toe; 2 granddaughters:  Michelle Woody and husband, Gerald, of Green Mountain and Rhonda Ledford and husband, Marty, of Newdale; 4 great grandchildren:  Megan and Logan Woody and Whitney and Kendall Ledford; a sister:  Jean Grindstaff of Celo; brother-in-law:  Jerry Hensley of Ocala, FL and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Charlie Carroway and Jeff Reecer will officiate.  Burial will be in the Double Island Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times, will be at the home of Rhonda and Marty Ledford.

RUTH FENDER EDWARDS

 Beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-grandmother, Ruth Fender Edwards, 87, of Mt. Ulla, NC, formerly of the Elk Shoal Community, passed away Friday, October 22, 2010, at Rowan Memorial Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Phil and Annie Phillips Fender.  She was preceded in death by her husband:  Noah Edwards; 2 sons: Dewey and Mac Edwards; 2 brothers:  Howard Fender and Ralph Lewis; and, a son-in-law:  Lynn Arrwood.

 

Surviving are her 2 sons:  Phil Edwards and wife, Juanita, of Burnsville, Pete Edwards and wife, Sherry, of Mt. Ulla, NC; 5 daughters:  Velvie Arrwood of Greenville, TN, Doris Bradford and husband, Larry, of Mt. Ulla, Lexie Davis and husband, Tommy, of Mt. Ulla, Chris Laws and husband, Lawrence, of Burnsville, and Maxine Edwards of Mt. Ulla; daughter-in-law:  Shirlee Edwards of Leicester, NC; 22 grandchildren; 46 great grandchildren; 3 great, great grandchildren; 2 special sisters-in-law and best friends:  Pearl Fender and Edna Lewis; and, an aunt and uncle:  Virginia and Frank Phillips. 

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs.  Jerry Shelton and Burl Ledford will officiate.  Graveside services will be held at 11AM Tuesday in the Watts Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 PM Monday at the funeral home.

RILEY 'FRANK' HOLLIFIELD

Riley “Frank” Hollifield, 66, of the Wyatt Town Community, passed away, Thursday, October 14, 2010 at his home.   A native of Yancey County, he was the son of the late Jack and Magnolia Calloway Hollifield.  He was also preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence Hollifield.  He was a chicken fighter and fisherman who was loved by many.

 

Surviving are his wife, Jessie Robinson Hollifield of the home; 4 sons:  Joey Hollifield, Riley Hollifield and wife Kathy, Bobby Hollifield and wife, Christina, and Billy Hollifield and wife, Christi; 3 daughters:  Pamela Solarek and husband, Don, Vicki Cooper and husband, Micheal, and Judy Willis and husband, John; grandchildren:  Riley Frank, III, Kaitlyn, Bradley, Abigail, Bradley, Anthony, Kacey, Michelle and Felicia; one brother:  Thad Hollifield and wife, Doris, two sisters:  Elna Rathburn and husband, Charles and Marie Elkins and husband, Zenus.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8:00 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Tommy Thomas will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday in Gouges Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home. 

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home to assist with funeral expenses.
