PAULINE PETERSON JOHNSON

Pauline Peterson Johnson, 91, of Micaville, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, September 11, 2010, at her home.   A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the Late Loss and Carrie Buchanan Peterson, and the wife of Buren Johnson who died in 1970.   She was a retired employee of Modern Globe in Bakersville.  Pauline enjoyed gardening, her Sunday school class and her family.

 

Surviving are 4 daughters:  Jeri Ray and husband, Max, of Green Mountain, Karen Shepherd and husband, Larry, of Burnsville, Linda Laws and husband, Charles Ray, and Brenda Pate and husband, Phillip, all of Green Mountain; 7 grandchildren:   Jo McMahan, Donna Huskins, Alan Ray, Kyle Johnson, Dawn Laws, Bradley Laws and Sherry Tipton; 9 great grandchildren; a sister:  Nadine Peterson of Johnson City; a brother:  T.J. Peterson and wife, Faye, of Green Mountain; very special nephews:  John Howell and wife, Elana, Eddie Johnson and wife, Wilma; and, special care giver:  Amanda Howell.

 

Funeral Services will be held at 2PM Tuesday in the Pleasant Gap Baptist Church, of which she was a member.  The Revs.  Steve Grindstaff, Tommy Murphy and Randy Clark will officiate.  Burial will be in the Woody Cemetery on Ridge Road.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Monday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.

DEBORAH DIANE COOK

Deborah Diane Cook, 55, of Valdese, strolled over to Heaven Friday, September 10, 2010, at the home of her sister.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of Margarette Wilson Cook of Valdese and the late Ralph Cook.  She was preceded in death by a brother:  Luther Cook; and, a sister:  Wilma Cook.  Deborah attended Cornerstone Independent Baptist Church in Connelly Springs.

 

Surviving, in addition to her mother, are 4 brothers:  James Cook and wife, Ruby, and Thurman Cook and wife, Anna, of Connelly Springs, Lloyd Cook of Marion and Roscoe Cook and wife, Iris, of Burnsville; 2 sisters:  Grace Hughes and husband, Charles, of Morganton and Joyce Wheeling of Valdese; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 4PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Gene McPeters and Leonard Lindsey will officiate.  Burial will be in the Robinson Cemetery on Halls Chapel Road.

 

The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 4PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

RUBY CUTWAY

Ruby Cutway, 62, of Prices Creek Community, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, September 8, 2010, at Brookside Rehabilitation & Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Leonard and Madge Elkins Biggs.

 

Surviving are 4 sons:  Tracy Music and wife, Tara, of Burnsville, James Music of Weaverville, Leroy Cutway and wife, Tammy, of Mississippi, and Michael Cutway of Mississippi; a sister:  Marlene Riddle of Green Mountain; 4 brothers:  Bobby Biggs and J. D. Biggs of Burnsville, Gary Biggs of Greeneville, TN and Richard Biggs of Dahlonega, GA; and, 8 grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Seth Metcalf will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 2PM Sunday in the Robinson Cemetery on Bakers Creek.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

MERLE PARKER

Merle Parker, 86, of the South Toe community, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at Mountain Ridge Wellness Center.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Eula Gibbs Carroll and the wife of Avery Parker who passed away in 2000.  She was also preceded in death by a son, James Parker, 3 brothers and 2 sisters.  Merle was a member of Browns Creek Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and President of WMU.  She was a former employee of Burnsville Hospital and Spruce Pine Hospital.

 

Surviving are 4 daughters:  Mildred Hollifield and husband, Tommy, of Tallahassee, FL, Gabra Burris and husband, Gary, of Marion, Donna Gibson and husband, Carson, of Spruce Pine and Shelia Baldwin of Boca Raton, FL; 4 sons:  Zeke Parker and wife, Doris, of Marion, Howard Parker and wife, Lillian, Jackie Parker and Harlon Parker and wife, Cherrie, all of Burnsville; 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 3 sisters:  Alma Lister of Marion, Edith Laws of Burnsville and Glenda Atkins of Spruce Pine; 1 brother:  Wade Carroll of Burnsville and several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Charlie Carroway and Tony Laws will officiate.  Burial will be in the Carroway Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 PM Friday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.

WILLIAM JACK ALLEN

William Jack Allen, 83, of Burnsville passed away Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at Spruce Pine Brian Center.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late W. L. and Addie Smith Allen.  He was also preceded in death by a brother, Burdette Allen and sisters:  Wilma Ketchum and Thelma Redman.  Jack was a World War II Army Veteran and a retired electrician.

 

Surviving are a son:  Rickey Allen of Chester, VA, a granddaughter:  Bridgette Allen of Virginia; a sister:  Barbara Ray and husband, Wilson; special caregivers, nephew, Donnie Allen and wife, Loretta; and a sister-in-law:  Una Mae Allen all of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Pastor Jerry Shelton will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday in West Burnsville Baptist Church Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.       

VERNON ALVIN JUSTICE, JR.

Vernon Alvin Justice, Jr., 83, of Little Switzerland, went to be with the Lord Friday, September 3, 2010.  A native of Oklahoma, he was a son of the late Vernon A. and Nyle Looper Justice.  He was also preceded in death by a son, Kevin Justice.  He was a World War II Navy Veteran and a registered architect in Missouri and Florida.  After practicing in St. Petersburg, FL, he was an architect at Robins Air Force Base, GA.  Vernon was active in reestablishing the Church of Christ in Burnsville, serving as the first minister, and continuing his ministry through his 18-year radio program “Have You Got a Minute?” on WKYK.

 

Surviving are his wife of 59 years:  Sue Marrs Justice; sons:  Bryan Justice and wife, Diane, of Maryville, TN, Lance Justice and wife, Debbie, of Georgetown, SC, and Craig Justice and wife, Linda, of Warner Robins, GA; and, 9 grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Tuesday in the Chapel at WNC State Veteran’s Cemetery in Black Mountain.  Jerry Senn will officiate.  Burial will follow in the Veternas Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7PM Monday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, Burnsville, NC.

CASIE EUGENE THOMAS, JR.

Casie Eugene Thomas, Jr., 68, of the South Toe Community, went home to be with the Lord Friday, September 3, 2010, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of Elsie Laws Thomas of Micaville and the late Rev. Casie Thomas.  He was also preceded in death by a son:  Patrick Thomas; and, a brother:  Ernest Thomas.  Eugene was a member of Bowditch Union Church, where he served as Deacon and Choir Leader.  He was owner of Thomas Construction Company and had been a carpenter for 35 years.  Eugene enjoyed deer hunting.

 

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 46 years:  Patricia Autrey Thomas; a son:  Bryan Thomas and wife, Amy of South Toe; 4 sisters:  Leslie Cooke of Sevierville, TN, Bernice Metcalf of Mars Hill, Louise Dockery of Marion, and Christine Morgan of Asheville; 4 brothers:  Marshall Thomas of Erwin, TN, Jimmy Thomas of Covington, VA, Billy Thomas of Burnsville and Larry Thomas of Micaville; and, special friends:  Bob and Barbara Culberth of Abbeville, SC.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 P.M. Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Ronnie Whitson and Jim Shoupe will officiate.  Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery at Seven Mile Ridge.

 

The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3:30 P.M. prior to the service at the funeral home.

ARTHUR ARLEN "OTT" HUGHES

Arthur Arlen "Ott" Hughes, 89, of the Double Island Community, went home to be with his Lord and Savior surrounded by his loving family and friends Thursday, September 2, 2010, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Fonze and Susie Fox Hughes.  He was also preceded in death by his wife:  Vera Presnell Hughes; a granddaughter:  Donna Lynn Laws; brothers:  Richard and Homer Hughes; and, a sister:  Francis Hughes Whitson.  Arthur was a member of Double Island Baptist Church and a charter member of the Double Island Volunteer Fire Department.  He was a World War II US Army Veteran.

 

He is survived by 4 daughters:  Jean Robinson and husband, Homer, of W. Jefferson, Helen Hughes, Hazel Wilson and husband, Roger, and Elizabeth (Lib) Cassida and husband, Donald, all of the Double Island Community; special friend:  Marcella Hughes; special sisters in Christ:  Mae Silvers and Marietta Forbes; 9 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 1 great, great grandchild; and, brothers:  Farrell and Howard Hughes of Burnsville, and Lloyd Hughes of Hickory.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Rick Woody, John Ellege and Joe Bennett will officiate.  A private graveside service will be held Saturday in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

FRANK JUNIOR SILVER

 

Frank Junior Silver, 77, of Pensacola, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Champ and Bonnie Storie Silver.  He was also preceded in death by a daughter:  Diane Beaver; a son:  Steve Ledford; and, his mother-in-law:  Irene Hyatt.  Junior served 16 years in the U.S. Navy and was a Korean War Veteran.

 

Surviving are his wife: Doris Hyatt Silver; a daughter:  Judy Ledford of Spruce Pine; sons:  Charles Ledford and wife, Carol, of Monticello, GA, David Ledford and wife, Tammy, of Erwin, TN, Dean Ledford and wife, Paula, and Gary Ledford and wife, Teresa; daughter-in-law:  Kathy Ledford; son-in-law:  Gerald Beaver; a sister:  Jean Allen; brothers:  Jerry Silver and wife, Tish, all of Burnsville, and Dennis Silver of Marion; 17 grandchildren; and, 17 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 1PM Friday in the Pensacola Free Will Baptist Church, of which he was a member.  Rev. Norman Lovelace and David Ledford will officiate.  Burial will follow in the Circle of Faith Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Thursday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, where the body will remain until taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.

NOLA BRADFORD

Nola Pate Bradford, 91, of Burnsville, passed away Monday, August 30, 2010 at her home where she was able to remain with the loving care provided by Brittany Austin Buchanan.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late John D. and Hattie Wilson Pate of which she was the last survivor of 11 children.  She was the wife of Hubert Bradford who died in 1992 and was also preceded in death by children:  Nina Hammonds, JoAnn Hicks, Roger Bradford, Steve Bradford and Danny Bradford.  At age 55, Nola reared a second family:  Donna Smith, Eddie and Steve Hammonds and Kimberly Ball.  Nola remained active and enjoyed quilting, gardening and fishing well into her later years.  Nola’s influence was felt far beyond the realms of her family.

 

Surviving are children:  Eddie Bradford and wife, Jean, of Burnsville, Dale Coletta and husband, David, of Palm Harbor, FL, Broma Stiles and husband, Ed, of Burnsville; son-in-law:  William R. Hicks of Blountville, TN; 16 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren. 

 

Funeral services will be held at 7 PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Stacy Elkins will officiate.  Graveside services will be held at 11 AM Wednesday in the Milburn Bradford Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be grandsons and great grandsons. 

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
