RUTH FRANKLIN COOPER

Mary Ruth ‘Ruthie’  Cooper, 61, of Laurinburg, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, March 6, 2016 at her home, surrounded by her family and friends.  A former resident of Burnsville, she was a daughter of Kate Woody Franklin of Laurinburg and the late Rev. Elbert Franklin.  She was also preceded in death by a sister; Lois Dyre.

Surviving in addition to her mother is her loving husband of 37 years, Rev. Ellis Cooper; Sisters: Kaye Phillips Holcombe of Burnsville, Nancy Higgins and Deborah Cooper of Wagram and Kimberly Griffith of Lula, GA; brothers; Joe Franklin of Baldwin, GA and Rev.  Lou Franklin of Cornelia, GA and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 P.M. Thursday in Little Mission Holiness Church. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 5 until 9 P.M. Wednesday at the Cooper home.

CARROLL WESLEY ANGEL

Carroll Wesley Angel, 90, formerly of Burnsville, passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at Brookdale Assisted Living in Asheboro.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Gaston M. and Malissa Beaver Angel and the husband of 60 years of Elora Griffith Angel, who died in 2008. He was also preceded in death by a sister: Beatrice and brothers: Alvin, Derrick, Edgar and Pershing.  Carroll was a member of the Greater Generation, having served his country in WWII as a Quarter Master Third Class aboard the USS Bates.  He served on the Bates from the day it was commissioned until the day it was sunk by Japanese suicide planes.  The Bates escorted merchant ships with war supplies and personnel to Europe.  After participating in the invasion of France, the Bates was sent to the Pacific to assist with the invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.  The ship sank near the island of Ishema in May 1945.

After the war, Carroll returned to Burnsville and graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College, now Appalachian State University.  He taught in Yancey County schools, sold insurance and then worked for Mohasco Corporation, retiring after 31 years.

Carroll is survived by his daughters: Dianne Vickery and husband Michael of Hampstead and Sheila Nelson and husband Chip of Asheboro; a granddaughter; Courtney Thomas and husband Michael of Charlotte and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 P. M. Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Pastor Wes Sharpe will officiate.  Burial will be in the Holcombe Cemetery, with military graverites by Sgt. E. L. Randolph, Chapter 57 DAV.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7 P.M. Thursday at Ridge Funeral Home in Asheboro and from 2 until 3 P. M. Friday, prior to the service at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.

LENA PENLAND METCALF

Lena Penland Metcalf, 88, of the Horton Creek Community, went home to be with the Lord on February 24, 2016.  She was a daughter of the late Fred and Estie Robinson Penland and the wife of Coy Metcalf who passed away in 2007. She was also preceded in death by brothers:  Arnold, Arvil, and Carol; sisters:  Ethel and Frances; sons: Paul, J. R., and Clinton; grandsons:  Chris and J. R. Junior Metcalf.

Lena enjoyed Grand Ole Opry music, gardening and being with friends and fmaily.  She never met a stranger.  Everyone was always welcomed in her home with open arms and a smile.  She was a true friend to all who knew her.  Lena was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.  Lena will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Surviving are her son:  Clifford Metcalf and wife, Deborah; daughters-in-law:  Gail Davis Metcalf, of Spruce Pine, Iva Glenn Gentry Metcalf of Shelton Laurel; sisters:  Camalee Robinson of Burnsville, Evelyn Hensley of Mars Hill; 9 grandchildren:  Jeremy, Jason, Darlene, Tim, Terry, Candy, Sandra, Alishia  and Niki; and 22 great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 7 PM Friday, February 26 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Jerry Shelton will officiate.  Graveside services will be held at 11 AM Saturday in the Metcalf Cemetery on Horton Creek Road.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

CLAUDE WOODBY

Claude Woodby, 86, of Byrd Branch, Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 20, 2016, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late James Marion and Alice King Woodby.  He was also preceded in death by his brothers:  Bruce, Jim, George, Charlie and Bill; a sister:  Lydia Higgins; half-brothers:  Harrison, Dan, Troy, Leacer and Luther; half-sisters:  Margaret, Maphra, Maggie, Birdie and Wanda; and a very special part of the family:  Bobby Gunter.  Claude was a lifelong farmer and retired from Glen Raven Mills.  He will best be remembered for being proud of where he came from, and the love of his family and friends.

 

Surviving are his wife:  Orpha Bryant Woodby; sons:  David and Dennis Woodby (Robin) of Burnsville and Darrell Woodby (Marina) of Estatoe; daughters:  Rose Woodby, Mary Alice Woodby and Melanie Woodby Murphy (Max), all of Burnsville, and Daphny Woodby (Steve) of Spruce Pine; 5 grandchildren:  Christy Hill (Drew), Amanda and Amiee Woodby, Cody Woodby and Kenneth Woodby; 2 step grandchildren:  Samantha and Shane Murphy and one great grandchild due in May.  Also surviving are his sisters:  his twin, Maude Bradford of Burnsville and Mary Kampf of Arden; and sisters-in-law:  Honnie and Gladys Woodby.  A host of nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Tuesday in Borings Chapel Freewill Baptist Church, of which he was a member.  Revs. Dale Laws, Frank Cable and Marvin Silvers will officiate.  Burial will be in the Woodby Family Cemetery. Grandsons and nephews will be pallbearers.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Monday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.    

 

The family wishes to extend appreciation to the staff of Blue Ridge Hospice & Palliative Care, Yancey Hospice, and Brookside Rehabilitation & Care. 

RB MILLER

RB Miller, 62, of Connelly Springs, passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2016, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, surrounded by his loved ones.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Arnold and Mary Magdaline Fox Miller.

 

Surviving are 2 daughters:  April Bolin and husband, Scott, and Brandite Conley, all of Hickory; a son:  John Brooks Miller of Hickory; 10 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 6 sisters:  Susie Jones of Hildebran, Carolyn Miller of Morganton, Gail Price and Shirley Reed of Connelly Springs, Jenny Miller of Tennessee and Judy Moss of Brooksville, FL; and, a brother:  Jack Miller of Brooksville, FL.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Aaron Causby and Terry Hensley will officiate.  Burial will follow in the Grover Hunter Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

CASSIE CONSTANCE STYLES

Cassie Constance 'Connie' Styles, 91, of Burnsville, passed away Monday, February 15, 2016, at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Virgil Lusk and Minnie Belle Letterman Edwards and the wife of Robert Maurice Styles, who died in 2004.  She was also preceded in death by a son; Rodney M. Styles,  sisters; Catherine Edwards and Jeanette Waldrop and brothers; Guy, Ellis and James Edwards.

Surviving are a daughter: Teresa Styles of Charlotte; sons: Virgil Styles and wife Debbie of Richlands, NC and Keith Styles and wife Sue of Sylva; 5 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 P. M. Friday, February 19th in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Randy Randolph will officiate.  Burial will be in the Styles Family Cemetery on Green Mountain Drive.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

DONALD G. WESTALL

Donald G. Westall, 88, of Burnsville, passed away Friday, February 12, 2016, at his home.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Edgar and Nola Edge Westall.  He was also preceded in death by a sister:  Jewell Westall McIntosh.  Donald proudly served his country in the US Army.  After returning home he was in management at Lowes, and in 1963 he purchased Western Auto in Burnsville, which he operated for 23 years.  After retirement, Donald served on the Burnsville town council, performed charity work for Crossnore School, and was Commander of American Legion Post  122.  In addition to being civic minded, he greatly enjoyed travel and adventure with his family, taking several trips to Europe, the Caribbean, and throughout the United States.

 

Surviving are his wife of 61 years:  Elizabeth Hall Westall; daughter:  Anne Westall Benore; and, brothers:  Phillip and Glenn Westall.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Sunday in Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church.  Rev. Wes Sharpe will officiate.  A recepition wil follow the service in the Family Life Center of the church. Burial will be in the Newdale Presbyterian Church Cemetery. 

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

ENA KATE RIDDLE

Ena Kate Riddle, 82, of Bolens Creek, went to be with her Lord on Friday, February 12, 2016, at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Bernice Allen Smith.  Ena was the salutatorian at Burnsville High School, graduating in 1952.  She was also preceded in death by a sister:  Agnes Taylor.  Ena eloped and married Vernon Riddle on Christmas Eve in 1952.

 

Surviving are her husband of 63 years:  Vernon Riddle; daughter:  Rebecca West and husband, Myles; son:  Dale Riddle and wife, Sandy, all of Southern, MD; sisters:  Clara Mae Ogle, Ann Wilson and husband, Willard, and Dorothy Riddle and husband, Ben; 2 grandchildren:  Jennifer West and Dale V. Riddle II; and, a great grandson:  Donovan West.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Dr. Chris Morgan will officiate.  Burial will be in the McCracken Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

CHARLES WILSON

Charlie Wilson, age 29, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on February 11, 2016 at St. Joseph Hospital after a battle of critical pneumonia.   He was the son of Lucy Wilson, of Burnsville and Dan Wilson, (Stacie) of Leicester.  In addition to his parents he is survived by one sister, Sally Hilliard (John) and two favorite nephews, Dakota and David Murphy, (who brought great joy to their Uncle Charlie) and an Uncle Eddie Young (Vada) and special friend Gene McGee.

Charlie loved life and being with family and friends.  His thoughtful, kind and caring spirit extended to those family and friends.  Charlie especially enjoyed being with his “buddies,” the campers of Funshine Camp.  This camp is for special people and their families that do not often have the opportunity to enjoy a camping experience.  Charlie was a multitalented, creative person who enjoyed giving to others.  His talents of arranging flowers, creating bird houses, culinary arts and expressing his love for others by giving hand crafted gifts from his heart.  These gifts were greatly appreciated by all who received them.  He had a natural talent in preparing unique dishes in food preparation; he had worked at several restaurants and catered many private parties.  His creativity also extended to photography, drama, design and all things nature.  One of his favorite activities was volunteering at the Funshine Camp since its beginning.  As a young boy Charlie also enjoyed dance and performed in the Nutcracker performances.  He was a member of Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church.  Most recently Charlie attended the West Burnsville Church of God. 

The service to celebrate this special man’s life will be held at 3 PM Saturday, February 13, 2016 in the Chapel of the Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeal home.  Charlie will be buried in the Edd Young family cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Funshine Camp Maxim Heath Care Services, 592 US Highway 19 E Bypass, Burnsville, N.C. 28714.

The Wilson and Young family would like to thank the medical staff at Coli Critical Care Unit at Saint Joseph Hospital for their excellent care and the staff at the Spruce Pine Hospital.  Charlie was indeed a very dear gift from a gracious Heavenly Father who was blessed to the Wilson family through Children’s Home Society of NC.  Deep appreciation goes to all Charlie’s special friends and family who have loved and prayed for him. 

JUNE BUCHANAN LAWS

June Buchanan Laws, 87, of Possum Trot, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, February 9, 2016, at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Sam and Bertie Robinson Buchanan.  She was also preceded in death by brothers:  Claude, Edison, Emory and Lealon Buchanan; a sister:  Elsie Cassida, and, a son-in-law: Gary Riddle.

 

Surviving are her children, daughter:  Joyce Ray and husband, Robert, of Possum Trot, son:  Danny Laws and wife, Pam, of Double Island, and daughter:  Janice Riddle of Newdale; grandchildren:  Blandon Silvers (Kim), Amber Robinson (Scottie), Cristina Ray, Brian Cooper, and Russell Ray (April); 12 great grandchildren; sisters:  Annie Dover of Burnsville and Glenna Dellinger of Rome, GA; and, brothers:  Jack Buchanan of Maryland, Ray Buchanan of Pleasant Gap, Marvin Buchanan of Icard and Vernon Buchanan of Spruce Pine.  Several nieces and nephews also survive. 

 

Funeral services will be held at 8PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Revs. Jim Bo Seaton and Ricky Woody will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Saturday in Double Island Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Friday, prior to the service at the funeral home.
