Alma J. Franklin

Alma J. Franklin, 67, of Burnsville went home to be with the Lord, Monday, April 5, 2010 at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was daughter of the late Lee and Martha Silver Carroll and the wife of Ralph Franklin who died in 2002.  She was also preceded in death by a son, Randall Timothy Franklin.

           

 Surviving are a daughter:  Rita Woody and husband, Michael, of Green Mountain; 2 sons:  Michael Franklin and wife, Sherry, of Connellys Springs and Keith Franklin and wife, Jennifer, of Marion; 8 grandchildren; 2 sisters:  Zelma Carroll and Abigail Harris and husband, Pender, of Burnsville and a brother:  Clifton Carroll and wife, Louise, of Nebo.

           

 Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Jerry Shelton will officiate.   A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in the Piney Hill Church Cemetery.

           

 The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times will be at her home.

           

JANIE HANEY JOHNSON

Janie Haney Johnson, 84, of the Bald Mountain Community went home to be with the Lord Monday, March 1, 2010 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Sarah Byrd Haney and the wife of Virgil Johnson who died in 1960.  She was also preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.

         

 Surviving are a daughter:  JoAnn Johnson McCurry and husband, Robert; a granddaughter:  Teena McCurry; 2 grandsons:  Jamie McCurry and wife, Shana and Jeremy McCurry and wife, Tiffany, all of Burnsville; 3 great-grandchildren:  Megean, Colton and Robbie McCurry; a sister:  Mollie Quinn of Inman, SC; a sister-in-law:  Kathleen Haney of Burnsville; 5 step-children and several nieces and nephews.

           

 Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Billy Mitchell will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Fender Cemetery at Bee Log.

           

 The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times, will be at the home of JoAnn and Robert McCurry.

           

 

MADGE BRYANT

Madge Bryant, 81, of Patterson Branch, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, March 31, 2010.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Nora Garland Bryant.  She was preceded in death by a son, Roger Bryant and a sister, Evelyn Woodby Mitchell.  Madge was a member of Patterson Branch Freewill Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years.  She loved her Lord, her family and her friends.

           

 Surviving are her husband of 64 years, Fletcher Bryant; two daughters:  Nina Stevens of Green Mountain and Sandra Davis of Burnsville; 2 sons:  Steven Ray Bryant of Burnsville and Donald Lee Bryant of Green Mountain; a sister:  Wanda Bryant of Burnsville; a brother:  Lamar Bryant of Burnsville; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

           

 Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in Patterson Branch Freewill Baptist Church.  Revs. Cecil Hensley and Brian Blankenship will officiate.  Burial will be in the Howell Cemetery with grandsons serving as pallbearers.

           

 The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

CHRIS MacLEOD

Chris MacLeod, 20, of Burnsville, passed away Sunday, March 21, 2010.  Born in Ft. Collins, Colorado, he was a son of Walter MacLeod and Monica Cooper.  Chris had been a resident of Yancey County for the past 7 years.  A 2008 graduate of Mtn. Heritage, he was involved in the JROTC, achieving the rank of Command Sergeant Major, and was on the wrestling team.  Chris was a student at Mayland Community College in the auto repair program.

           

Surviving are his Mother and Dad:  Monica and Scott Cooper of Burnsville; Father:  Walter MacLeod of Oaktown, IN; a sister:  Jennifer MacLeod of the home; grandparents:  David and Donna Black of New Mexico, John and Dorothy Kinch of Colorado, Esther Bertsch of Colorado, Hugh and Linda Foist of Washington, Ron and Paula Cooper of Indiana, and Jim and Virginia Fadely of Indiana; his fiancée: Tonya Huskins of Burnsville; and, numerous friends and church family.

           

A memorial service will be held at 7PM Friday in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.  The Revs. Jerry Shelton and Dick Westbrook will officiate.  Burial will be in the Mt. Pleasant Church Cemetery.

           

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

           

Memorials may be made to the family to offset medical expenses.

TED HAROLD CANIPE

Ted Harold Canipe, 71, of the Clearmont Community, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 20, 2010.  Born and raised in Yancey County, he was the son of the late Dewey and Beatrice King Canipe. 

 

Ted graduated from Clearmont High School in 1957.  He moved with his wife, Kay, to Baltimore, MD, where they raised their family in the Essex-Middle River area.  Ted was a member of the management team for General Motors, where he worked for 31 years at the Broening Highway Plant.  He volunteered his time with young people, coaching softball with the Bengies-Chase Recreation Council and Middle River Baptist in the local church league.

           

In 1990, Ted returned to Yancey County where he served as Chairman of the Yancey County Board of Elections, part-time school bus driver and substitute teacher.  He also drove for the National Forest Service, transporting crews to forest fires all over the South.  Through the Forest Service, Ted served with the Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster Recovery Team and Hurricane Katrina Disaster Team.

           

Ted loved spending time with family and friends.  He and his wife enjoyed RV travel, visiting 48 states and Canada, building friendships everywhere they went.

           

He was preceded in death by brothers:  Chester, Paul and Richard Canipe.

           

Surviving are his wife of 52 years:  Kay Letterman Canipe; two daughters:  Kimberly Bray and husband, Harry, of Bloomington, IL and Jill Malcolm and husband, John, of Parkland, FL; a son:  Jason Canipe and wife, Amber, of Jacksonville, FL; a brother:  Jim Canipe and wife, Brigette, of Tampa, FL; a sister-in-law:  Eyvonne Canipe of Green Mountain; and, 7 grandchildren:  Jim, Regina, Abigail, Peter, Victoria, Zoe, and Ava.

           

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at 6PM at Peterson Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.  The family asks friends to come and share their memories.  A private burial was held in the Fairview Cemetery at Horton Hill on March 20, 2010.

BLANCHE HUNTER CHANDLER

Blanche Hunter Chandler, 86, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, March 20,2010, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Burgess and Mary Sorrels Peterson, and the wife of Burnie Hunter who died in 1979 and Jay Chandler who died in 2005. She was also preceded in death by a brother:  John H. Peterson; and, a sister:  June Miller.

           

Surviving are her daughter:  Gwen Woody and husband, Alan; a granddaughter:  Monica Wright and husband, Alan; a great grandson:  Seth d a great granddaughter:  Abigail, all of Burnsville; 2 sisters:  Ruth Higgins of Burnsville and Atlas Hensley of Summerville, SC; a brother:  Boyd Peterson of Butler,TN; 3 step daughters:  Julia Sluder and Latisha Durner of Marietta, GA and Lisa Davis of Pittsboro, NC; 2 step sons:  Dallas and Spencer Chandler of Burnsville; 10 step grandchildren; 2 special step granddaughters:  Cara Mae Mitchell and Rhiannon Chandler; and, 9 step great grandchildren.

           

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. The Rev. Philip Garland will officiate. Burial will be in the Jacks Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

           

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

VIVIAN YOUNG BOLDING

Vivian Young Bolding, 62, of Marion, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 17, 2010, at McDowell Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of Hubert Young of Burnsville and the late Roberta Griffith Young.  She was an employee of Baxter Health Care.  Vivian was a member of the Church of Christ in Greenville, SC.

           

 Surviving, in addition to her father, are her husband:  Jimmy Bolding; stepmother:  Polly Jackson Young of Burnsville; 2 sisters:  Donna Young of Greensboro and Wanda Young Peppers of Burnsville; and, a host of nieces, nephews and cousins .

           

 Funeral service will be held at 1PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Burial will follow in Horton Cemetery.

           

 The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

HUBERT RALPH EDWARDS

Hubert Ralph Edwards, 72, of Burnsville, passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2010, at John F. Keever Solace Center in Asheville.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Ken and Laurie Jones Edwards.  Hubert was a retired employee of Glen Raven Mills.

           

Surviving are his wife:  Mary Edwards; a son:  Randal Edwards, and wife, Jean, of Micaville; 2 daughters:  Linda McCurry of the home and Geneva English of Burnsville; 3 grandchildren:  B. J. McCurry of Bald Mountain and Asia Presnell and husband, Marcus, and Andrew Sparks, all of Burnsville; 5 sisters:  Mary Whitson, Viola Whitson and Sidney Ayers of Green Mountain, Thelma Ayers of Bakersville, and Zett Gortney of Johnson City, TN; and, a brother:  Kenneth Edwards of Morganton.

           

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Rev. Donald Whitson will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Saturday in the Bailey Hill Cemetery.

DELOVIA FOX

Delovia Fox, 88, of Gray, TN, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, March 14, 2010, in Gray.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late John and Zilla Arrowood Fox.  She was a retired employee of Vanderbilt Shirt Factory with 35 years of service and a life long member of Prices Creek Baptist Church.  Delovia had made her home in Gray for the past 4 years with her daughter.  She was preceded in death by a sister:  Nola Gibson; and, a brother:  Bobby Gene Fox.  Delovia was a very loving, giving and caring mother, grandmother and sister.

 

Surviving are her daughter:  Dianne Towe and husband, Wade, of Gray; 2 grandchildren:  Pam Towe of Ft. Lauderdale and Daniel Towe of Gray; 2 great grandchildren:  Emily and Dalton Towe; a sister:  Opal Blankenship of Burnsville; and, 3 brothers:  Farris Fox of Burnsville, J. G. Fox of Leicester, and Doyle Fox of Woodfin.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Rev. Ricky Bennett will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Thursday in Blankenship Cemetery on Blankenship Creek.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.  At other times the family will be at the home of Lillian Towe in Burnsville.

Dr. Jerry D. McKinney

Dr. Jerry D. McKinney went home to meet his maker on Saturday, March 13, 2010, after a courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Paul and Mae Edge McKinney.  Dr. McKinney was pastor of Putnam City Baptist Church for the past 13 years.  He attended school in Yancey County and NCSU.  After working in electrical engineering for 5 years he felt God’s call into the ministry.  He went to Bethany Theological Seminary for his Masters of Divinity and attained his Doctorate from Pocomoke Bible Institute.  In 1989, he satisfied all residence requirements for Doctor of Philosophy from Oxford Graduate School in Religion and Society.  Next to God, Jerry loved his family.  Jerry was committed to growing in Christ-likeness, contributing to the building up of the Body of Christ, and functioning as God’s servant in the world.

 

Surviving are his wife of 45 years:  Norma; daughter:  Alicia and husband, William, and their 2 daughters:  Dora and Allyson of Charlotte, NC; son:  Jerry Douglas II and wife, Paula, and their 3 sons:  Douglas, Riley and Finn, of Oklahoma City.

 

After a memorial service at his church in Oklahoma, his body will be flown to NC, where the funeral will be held on Sunday, March 21, at 3 PM at Pine Branch Baptist Church in Spruce Pine.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
