JERRY DEWAYNE BOONE

Jerry DeWayne Boone, 60, of Burnsville, passed away Monday, October 26, 2009, at Mission Hospitals Memorial Campus.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Coy and Mamie Laws Boone.  He was also preceded in death by a grandson:  Tanner DeWayne Boone.  Jerry was an employee of Unimin with 41 years of service.  He was a beloved husband, father and papaw.

 

Surviving are his wife of 40 years:  Frances Briggs Boone; 3 sons:  Steven Boone and wife, Amy, Tim Boone and Alan Boone; 4 grandchildren:  Dalton, Carrington, Jordan and Jada Boone; 4 brothers:  Kenneth Boone and wife, Pat, Johnny Boone and wife, Elaine, Bill Boone and wife, Marcilla, and James Boone and wife, Amy, all of Burnsville; 2 sisters:  Kathy Ray and husband, Rick, of Burnsville and Cheryl Washburn and husband, Charles, of Marion.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Friday in Bowditch Union Church, of which he was a member.  The Rev. Ronnie Whitson will officiate.  Burial will follow in Bowditch Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Thursday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, where the body will remain until taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.  At other times the family will be at his home.

MARGARETT BLACK DEYTON

Margarett Black Deyton, 81, of Burnsville, passed away Monday, October 26, 2009, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of Ephraim and Bertha Styles Black, and the wife of Dudley Deyton who died in 1977.  She was preceded in death by brothers:  John, Luther and Ralph Black; and, a sister:  Anne Penland.  Margarett enjoyed tending a garden, working in her flowers, reading, cooking, and keeping up with the news.  She loved spending time with her family.  Margarett had a wonderful sense of humor and loved making people smile.  She was a faithful friend who always helped anyone in need.

 

Surviving are a daughter:  Linda Deyton DeSpain and husband, Carl, of Columbia, SC; grandson:  Dr. Gene A. Garris, Jr. and wife, Angela; great granddaughters:  Laurel and Pippa; a great grandson:  Maximos Garris of Columbia; sisters:  Dorothy Deyton and Louise Silcox of Burnsville, Grace Rogers of Leicester and Virginia Joines of Newark, DE; and, a brother:  Charles Black of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 P.M. Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Rev. Philip Garland will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday in West Burnsville Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

WARD DIXON WOODY

Ward D. Woody, 91, of Newton, passed away Sunday, October 25, 2009, in Conover Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late John C. and Lillie Woody.  A World War II Army Veteran, he was a retired miner and construction worker.  He was preceded in death by 2 brothers:  Gem and Van Woody; and, a sister:  Madge Keaton.  Mr. Woody was a life long resident of the Pleasant Grove Community until moving to Newton 14 years ago.

 

Surviving are his wife of 69 years:  Florence Presnell Woody; 2 daughters:  Joleene Foxx and husband, Robert, of Hickory, and Carolyn Crowder and husband, Gay, of Newton; a son:  George Woody and wife, Marie, of Burnsville; 8 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 3 sisters:  Jewel Thomas of Bakersville, Annie Underwood of Maiden and Barbara McDaniel of Hickory; and, 2 brothers:  J. C. Woody of Burnsville and Ivan Woody of Morganton.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Odis Hudgins and Roger Whitson will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Thursday in the Pleasant Grove Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times will be at the home of George Woody on Upper Browns Creek Road.

ELIZABETH BASSFORD

Elizabeth A. Bassford, 96, of Mars Hill Retirement Community went home to be with the Lord Thursday, October 22, 2009.A native of Madison County, she was a daughter of the late John Robert Anderson, Sr. and Nettie Robertson Anderson.  She was also preceded in death by sisters Margaret Smith and Louise Holcombe and brothers John R. Anderson, Jr., Herbert J. Anderson and Dr. David D. Anderson.  She was a retired Cardiac Intensive Care Nurse at City Hospital in Baltimore, MD and returned to Mars Hill and retired from Asheville V A Medical Center.

 

Surviving are a sister; Marian Bradley and husband Pierce Bradley, Jr. of Asheville, an aunt; Ruth Anderson of Mars Hill and several nieces and nephews.

 

A memorial service will be held at 2 P. M.  Friday October 30, 2009 in Mars Hill Baptist Church, of which she was a member.  Dr. Tommy Justus and Rev. Sue Fitzgerald will officiate.

 

The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 P. M. Friday prior to the service at the church.

G. BURL MANEY

G. Burl Maney, 92, of the Prices Creek Community, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, October 18, 2009, at his home on the 68th wedding anniversary with the late Una Cook Maney, who died in 2006.  A native of Yancey County, he was the son of the late Walter and Ida Wilson Maney.  He was also preceded in death by sisters:  Ossie Sims and Vonnie Maney; a brother:  Alden Maney; and, step-mother:  Ann Styles Maney.   Mr. Maney retired from the NC Public School System after 33 years service, and was a Charter Member of West Yancey Volunteer Fire Department.

 

Surviving are two daughters:  Ida Jane Crowder and husband, Charles S., and Marie Nicholson and husband, Mike; a grandson:  Chuck Crowder, all of Burnsville; two step granddaughters; three step great grandchildren, all of Orlando, FL., and, the daughter and granddaughter of his heart:  Dianne and Andrea Edwards of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 6PM Tuesday in the Cane River Baptist Church, of which he had been a member since 1929, serving as Deacon, Treasurer and Sunday School Teacher. The Rev. Shane Cassada and Dr. Robert Melvin will officiate.

 

A graveside service will be held at 2PM Wednesday in the Gilbert Wilson Cemetery on Maney Branch Road.

 

The family will receive friends from 4 until 6PM Tuesday prior to the service at the church and at other times will be at the home of Marie Nicholson.

MARTHA RAY

Martha Marie Williams Ray, 68, of Micaville, went home to be with the Lord Friday, October 16, 2009 at her home. She was a daughter of the late Sammie and Lonnie Williams and the wife of Dan Wayne Ray who passed away in 1996. She was also preceded in death by a brother James C. Williams and a granddaughter Brittany Nicole Honeycutt. Martha was a retired employee of Baxters Laboratories .

 

Surviving are two daughters; Carol Adkins and husband Rick and Stacey Honeycutt and husband Curtis; two sons Russell Ray and Curtis Ray all of Micaville; three sisters Berniece Foxx of Micaville; Cindy Roberts of Mt. City, Tenn. and Wilma Fisher of Marion; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. The Revs.  Jim Shoupe and Ronnie Whitson will officiate. Burial will be in the Carroway Cemetery.

 The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Sunday at the funeral home.

WILKIE KING

Wilkie King, 94, of Langford Branch Road, went home to be with the Lord Friday, October 16, 2009, at Mountain Manor Assisted Living.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Alec and Lora McIntosh King.  He was also preceded in death by a sister:  Lena King; and, a brother:  Hoyt King.   Wilkie was a World War II Army Veteran, serving in the 84th Infantry Division in Europe and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.  He was the last surviving member of “The Rail Splitters”.  Wilkie was the oldest member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, where he had been a member since 1968.

 

Surviving are 2 daughters:  Nancy Buckner and husband, Nick, and Ann Edwards and husband, Billy; 2 sons:  Rev. Gene King and wife, Judy, of Fairview and Eddie King and wife, Cathy, of Burnsville; 6 grandchildren:  Clint King, Heather Reed, Kim Wilson, Ruth Simms, Chad King and Brody King; 7 great grandchildren:  Kelsey, Dillan, Kennedy, Caitlyn, Mackenzie, Blake and Casey, all of whom he loved and was very proud; and, a sister:  Lola King of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 8PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Harlon Ramsey, Ricky Ray and Gene King will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Wednesday in the McIntosh Cemetery on Langford Branch.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Tuesday at the funeral home and at other times will be at the home of Eddie King.

LORA PETERSON

Lora Peterson, 83, of Mtn. Village Apartments, went home to be with the Lord Friday, October 16, 2009, at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Noah and Rebecca Renfro Hughes, and the wife of Carmon Peterson who died in 1992.  She was a member of North Bend Free Will Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are 2 sons:  Gary Peterson and wife, Pat, and Gerald Peterson and wife, Cindy; grandchildren:  Kim Robinson, Shannon Peterson and Payton Peterson, 4 great grandchildren:  Morgan and Paige Peterson, Lainey and Kamryn Robinson, all of Burnsville; a twin sister:  Nora Buchanan of Green Mountain; and, a brother:  S. C. Hughes of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Dean Murphy and Blaine Whitson will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 2PM Sunday in the Fairview Cemetery at Horton Hill.

 

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7PM Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home.

ROBERT HIGGINS, JR.

Robert Higgins, Jr., 78 of Wallburg went home to be with his Lord Monday, October 12, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Robert W. Higgins, Sr. and Martha Jane Adkins Higgins.  He was a US Navy Korean Conflict Veteran and had been a resident of Wallburg for 50 years. He was employed by Carolina Steel until his retirement.

 

Surviving are his wife of 53 years:  Catherine Briggs Higgins; a daughter: Deborah Higgins Moser and husband, Dale, of Wallburg; 3 sisters: Allie Renfro of Winston-Salem, Hettie Price and Betty Fox of Burnsville; 3 special grandchildren that fondly referred to him as Papa:  Catlyn, Casey, and Caleb Moser.

 

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Wallburg Baptist Church of which he was a member.  Rev. Roy Cantrell and Dr. Brooks Hunt will officiate.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at J. C. Green & Sons Funeral Home, 10301 N. NC Hwy. 109, Winston Salem where the body will remain until taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

ELLA "POLLY' BUMGARNER

Ella Pauline “Polly” Woodie Bumgarner, 75, of Burnsville went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, October 11, 2009 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Jonas Ridge, Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Sam and Mae McCroskey Woodie.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Truitt Bumgarner; a son:  Stephen Bumgarner; 2 sisters:  Ora Woodie and Estalena Franklin; 3 brothers:  Wilie, Odis (Odie) and Earnest Woodie.


Surviving are two daughters:  Marsha Randolph and Traci Gibbs both of Micaville; 5 grandchildren:  Michelle Geouge, Stephen Riddle, Brock Riddle, Lindsey and D.J. Gibbs; 8 great-grandchildren:  Brittany and Makayla Marlowe, Douglas Geouge, Emmalee, Nicholas and Allison Riddle, and Jordan and Owen Riddle; 1 great-great-grandson:  Karsen Ray and 1 brother:  Ray Woodie of Jonas Ridge.


Funeral services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Shane Cassada will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in Concord Methodist Church Cemetery at North Cove.
