Betty Lou McCurry, 86, of the Possum Trot Community, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, June 24, 2018, at Smoky Ridge Health & Rehabilitation. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Back and Ida Angel Mathis. She was also preceded in death by 2 sisters: Maphrey Shepherd and Eunice Mathis; and, 4 brothers: Coy, Clayton, Charles and Troy Mathis. After her retirement she enjoyed being at home, working in her garden and her flowers. She loved having her friends and neighbors coming by to see her.
Surviving are a son: Richard McCurry; a daughter: Brenda Penland and husband, Donald; a grandson: Darren Penland and wife, Rica; a great granddaughter: Sierra Danille; a sister: Alice Crain; and several nieces and nephews, all of Burnsville.
Funeral services will be held at 7PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Jimbo Seaton will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 10:30AM Thursday in Pleasant Valley Church Cemetery on Possum Trot Road.
The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
